I had never even touched a guitar before I bought rocksmith.

I still wouldnt call myself good, but because of rocksmith I have learned enough that I really can play songs to the point of you being able to recognize what I'm playing. It was also pretty fun even early on, which makes it a lot easier to practice-- you're just dicking around right? meanwhile you slowly gain those skills and knowledge needed to play. The 'guitarcade' games are especially good for this, theyre little minigames you play the guitar to control, and they really help you learn about what fret is where.

Also I strongly suggest the PC. I've spent far more time in rocksmith playing custom dlc than I've spent playing the normal songs. I think you can get custom dlc on the 360 but its harder and might need a modded console, and ps3 cant do it at all.

Also amazon has it for $10 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009GKT2W2?t=slicinc-20&tag=slicinc-20&ascsubtag=c7CLutXqEeK-qDa3AM31nA0_y8Hb3_AiN_0_0

you will need to go pick up the cable on your own though, unless you feel like jumping through hoops to use a non-official cable, but I don't recommend that.

http://www.amazon.com/Ubisoft-Rocksmith-Not-Machine-Specific-630570063043006306200/dp/B005OSFUZI/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1371321404&sr=1-1&keywords=rocksmith+cable is the cable itself for $30, you might find a better deal locally but I don't know.

You can use that same cable in other pc programs, which is cool too. (thats true of any platform though, its the same cable)

My first guitar was an Epi Les Paul II and it was okay. BUT when I bought a used $225 used Ibanez guitar that was a $350 retail guitar it was so much better and easier to play. If you play golf imagine playing with the cheapest set of blade irons from Wal-Mart versus a decent set of cavity backed irons. It is night and day easier to use the better clubs. So if you have the budget consider used because for $250 to $300 you can score a nice good guitar you can play for years. Cheap guitars can be harder to play which makes it harder for beginners. BUT do not let that stop you... I played for 6 months on a Les Paul II and learned a lot and had fun too. I eventually found a used Gibson SG for $429 with a bunch of cosmetic issues like scratches but it plays great. Agree on getting the guitar set up. Also agree on getting a stand and this strap with locks is a good deal. Someone on here recommended this strap and it is great. Planet Waves 50CTPL00 Lock Cotton Electric Guitar Strap. The cotton adds friction so the guitar does not slip and the locks make sure the strap stays on. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008JCUWTU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hey I do this, and you might have read one of my posts, since I've been posting about it quite a bit in the past week.

Your observation about note detection are spot on. Rocksmith is intentionally lenient so as to give the user the benefit of the doubt. Hearing your sound from a real amp will absolutely clean up your playing. Some of the default Rocksmith tones are somewhat quiet, so it's often times easy for your guitar playing to get drowned out in the mix and miss out on some of the dynamics like natural feedback and sustain.

I use this thing to eliminate the ground loop. http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-HD400-BEHRINGER-MICROHD/dp/B000KUD2G4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422679298&sr=8-1&keywords=behringer+hum

You can do a test to see if it's ground loop noise by putting Rocksmith on a laptop and unplugging it from the mains. The idea is being that you only have one ground pin plugged into an outlet. There's a couple of other ways for testing and resolving a ground loops. The behringer unit isn't the cheapest way, but it's the safest for this type of temporarily created loop. It's a very reasonable price for a durable and functional unit.

I think playing with a real amp is a great idea and will improve your playing. If you have any pedals it'll also mean you have to tinker a bit to match the tones in the song. This can be handy for identifying and matching effects in songs. I love doing stuff like this because it pushes me to listen to everything carefully and figure out not only the notes I hear, but also the techniques and effects used to create the final sound.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/rocksmith

Among other things yes. Scales, arpeggios, chords and chord changes, mechanical exercises with focus on particular techniques.

The "shredders bible" has a lot of this stuff http://www.amazon.com/Speed-Mechanics-Lead-Guitar-Stetina/dp/0793509629/ref=la_B000APNO26_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1412216463&sr=1-2
(you can read a few pages in the preview and get an idea of what it's like)

Again though, this stuff requires a lot of discipline. You need to play with a metronome always. You need to record your playing and listen with a critical ear from time to time. You have to consider every motion and how efficient it is. This only really matters if you want to "shred" though. You can still play music for people without any of this, and rocksmith is a way more fun way to learn and requires less motivation. I own the shredders bible but I really don't use it much lately as I'm more interested in enjoying playing than I am on becoming the next steve vai. But I can say that I made more progress with it faster than I ever will with rocksmith.

FWIW, most of the minigames in rocksmith are useless because they're too gamified. Scale racer doesn't have a steady tempo and changes direction randomly, you're far better off practicing on a constant tempo with a metronome. Dux redux however is decent and string skip saloon can be good for developing good skipping skill. Castle chordead is also a fun way to learn chords and common chord changes in a specific key.

I got one, new, on amazona bout a couple of years back or so when the rocksmith 2014 remaster was still pretty new but I did have to buy the license transfer on steam was all and got the disc itself (used the code inside on steam) for around 12 or 13 bucks iirc. It may be much harder to find by now, though. but steam winter sales are coming up and I think it usually goes on sale as well as most of the songs. I also got my 2014 remastered from amazon the same, so I could get the cable with it.

Edit: Good lord it's pretty expensive now, probably from being discontinued on this version along with renewed interest in the 2014 since the remaster and larger amount of music available now. I would only trust anew copy, as you have to use the key inside it on steam and a used copy, would have been used probably. And steam keys can't be transferred. Steam winter sale is probably your best option.

My wife has the Squier by Fender Vintage SS Modified Special Jaguar Bass, and she likes it. It's a Short Scale (30 inch scale rather than 34 inch). Works well with Rocksmith. I raised the pickups a little bit, back when there were bass detection problems*, and that helped. No problems since.

You can read the reviews at that link as well, but it seems to be pretty well-received. Edit: Actually, you have to be careful. The site lumps together the reviews for all the styles shown. The top comment mentions active pickups, but the Special Short Scale version only has passive pickups. He has the full scale Special. Edit 2: I just realized the reviews say which style they are reviewing. Look for "Special Short Scale".

*There was a patch a couple years ago that addressed that as well.

u/Josh1billion · 2 pointsr/rocksmith

Received mine today. Pretty sweet looper, but unfortunately I'm still getting some hum. It's definitely not anywhere near as bad as the Y-splitter, so that's a relief, but it's still bad enough that Rocksmith is picking up a "B" note whenever my guitar should be silent.. hmm. This seems like it's messing with note detection a bit, and (as with my Y-splitter) I end up having to unplug a cable during tuning to remove the hum, because otherwise I can't tune some of the high strings. Tried recalibrating, but no luck. I know it's not my guitar, because the hum still exists even when my guitar is unplugged, as long as the Rocksmith cable is plugged into the looper.

I did some googling for "Rocksmith hum" and found some recommendations for this $25 hum remover, so I'm considering that. After reading the other posts, I was thinking there'd be no hum at all even without the hum remover.. oh well.

Other than that, though, it's a great pedal. Lots of nice features, and the ability to transfer your recordings from your pedal to your PC over USB is great. Definitely a worthwhile purchase even in light of the hum issue when used with Rocksmith.

u/BetterOffLeftBehind · 5 pointsr/rocksmith

Here is what I use - The action was super high (still is a bit) but a couple of 1/4 turns on the truss rod solved that problem. Works fine. I also bought a Yamaha for the kid because this is heavy, it has better electronics but it also has jumbo frets which results in a lot of clanking noises if you're not gentle with it. It also didn't come with an amp or anything.

I also use this to split to the amp When playing bass I turn the in-game instrument down and listen to the amp. The game will give you credit for a lot of "clunkers" and sloppy play. Guitar seems to come out of the stereo speakers my PS4 is hooked up to fine, but it really helps to split to the amp with the bass. It also helps to preserve the real-tone game cable as I never really touch it, it stays plugged into the pedal.

Guitar Aerobics by Troy Nelson is a book I picked up to supplement my playing with Rocksmith. I do a daily technical exercise from it (it has 365 of them that cover a variety of techniques, starting at an easy level and working up to an advanced one.)

I'm noticing it help me with my overall playing ability and would recommend it to anyone interested in boosting their chops, regardless of level :)

Guitar Aerobics: A 52-Week, One-lick-per-day Workout Program for Developing, Improving and Maintaining Guitar Technique https://www.amazon.com/dp/1423414357/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_vhcgvb0BKS7SR

I've already gone through like 15/20 lesson but for the love of me I can't do tremolos (I really want to learn this technique since I'd like to play miserlou), I saw on other forums and even here that some people suggested buying these picks https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003B0CCW0/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=AKC12S00R4ZWN&psc=1 , do you guys think these picks can give a significant improvement ?

u/ItsAllSoClear · 2 pointsr/rocksmith

It's on sale for PC ($20 off) on Amazon.

I recently picked it up myself. I've played guitar for a long time and it's still a blast. I just like being able to play along to songs I enjoy and actually hearing my success. It's fantastic- especially since I rarely have anyone to jam with anymore.

Well worth it.

u/MeatFarmer · 2 pointsr/rocksmith

Right. Okay so this is one of the books that I used...Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar and it talks about learning 'phrases.' So like...break the song down into different pieces/parts...whether that be verse/chorus or whatever...and then practice those different phrases. Rocksmith 2014 does this with 'riff repeater.' I've used that quite a bit to perfect different pieces in a slow, controlled way. Good luck and please let me know if you have any other questions!!!

u/agentwiggles · 3 pointsr/rocksmith

As sudobyte says, the unfortunate answer is that, yes, you do need to buy Rocksmith 1.

Luckily, RS1 is on sale on Amazon right now for $7.50, which is a steal. I had been waiting for a good deal like this for a while, and I snapped it up as soon as I heard about it a day or two ago. I've been having a lot of fun with the songs from RS1. There's a lot of good beginner level songs in there too, if you're just starting out.

You may also want to get the RS2014 Disc Import tool, which will take almost every song from RS1 and make them available in RS2014. This was on sale last night for $7.50 but it looks like its back at the regular price of $9.99.

If you're bummed to have to spend money on another game just to be able to buy certain DLC (I know it kind of pissed me off initially), try to think of it this way - for $17.50, you're adding 50 new songs to your RS2014 game, and opening up a lot of awesome DLC for your use. Since DLC songs are $3 a pop, getting 50 songs for less than $20 is a great deal no matter how you slice it!

u/Kennertron · 3 pointsr/rocksmith

You would probably want something like this RCA to headphone adapter then you can use any headphones you like.

I have a crappy pair of Behringer headphones I got with a practice amp kit I had bought early on in my guitar learnings, but here's some Sennheisers that look pretty nice.

Works with anything that has RCA audio out.

u/CashWiley · 2 pointsr/rocksmith

I learned CAGED from an older, jankier book; but I recommend Barrett's book on the topic to folks interested in expanding their fretboard freedom: https://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Fretboard-Workbook-Barrett-Tagliarino/dp/0634049011/

He doesn't strictly call it CAGED, likely due to the confusion some have with separating the 'chord' from the 'shape'. Still, chock full of info and it's an actual workbook, with exercises.

u/dso25 · 3 pointsr/rocksmith

Cheapest place is probably Amazon. Not sure where you are from but, for instance, it's 22 pounds on UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/UBI-Soft-Rocksmith-Real-Cable/dp/B007KGISK6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411241211&sr=8-1&keywords=realtone+cable.

You can get officially through Ubisoft but that's probably a bit more expensive: http://rocksmith.ubi.com/rocksmith/es-es/products/

And don't worry about your finger technique, we all start from the same place! It's all about practice :) You'll have lots of fun with Rocksmith and your guitar.

u/TheShandyMan · 1 pointr/rocksmith

Others will probably chime in with ideas about fixing your intonation which is probably (partially) your problem but what helped me was changing out the factory strings and putting on a decent set of new ones.

Also; don't trust the in-game tuner; it's far too generous and forgiving even though the game itself isn't. Either get a headstock tuner (any of them, even the super-cheap ones seem to work better than the in-game one); or an in-line tuner.

u/Rage2097 · 1 pointr/rocksmith

This is what I use. http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-TU300-Chromatic-Tuner/dp/B000SJJCX4/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1422352154&sr=1-1&keywords=behringer+tu300

You will also need 2 guitar cables, 1 to connect the out to the amp (I use a short one), one to connect the guitar to the in (I use a long one).

Rocksmith cable goes in the bypass.

It works really well, is cheap, and you have a tuner for if you want to play straight through the amp without RS. JUst an ideal solution for me.

If you are a gear snob or plan to become a professional or whatever you can get a more expensive Korg tuner if you like, but this setup is perfect for me.
You do lose the effects the game puts in, but I haven't found a song yet that I prefer the RS amp/effects modelling on to just the clean sound through the amp.

u/emosoresex · 3 pointsr/rocksmith

Truthfully the in game sound is perfectly fine IMO and up to par with any DAW I've used, the difference is likely in what you're using to output the sound (the two 12" are going to sound a ton better than shitty macbook speakers or not amazing quality headphones).

That being said I'm splitting to the same exact amp for my setup with a behringer headphone amplifier and dehummer.

I've heard other people use tuning pedals or AB/Y pedals which may (probably) are a cheaper and better solution, but I can't personally speak to that.

The downside of this setup is that you're going to still need to keep your volume at 10 and your tone at 10 on your guitar for the best RS note detection.

u/elephant_chew · 1 pointr/rocksmith

I'm not familiar with Bill Withers, sorry.

I think it's important to learn about 3 songs at a time. Switch it up. Use the other tools too. Guitarcade: castle chordead, string skip saloon, scale racer... Session mode....

Mainly it just takes diligence. Just be happy with where you are and push yourself just enough to challenge yourself but stop pushing if you start getting frustrated. Finding that key spot where you flow is what really made me enjoy learning the guitar, and I'm not super great or anything, but I think I finally started "getting it" after a good while.

Maybe try other resources too.. a few lessons from a local teacher, the free videos from Justinguitar.... I also subscribed to a site called Jamplay for 2 years, and read a few books on how to learn, my favorite was called the guitar fretboard workbook

Don't stop wanting it

u/softkittens · 1 pointr/rocksmith

I wasn't able to get RS 2014 working with an external audio interface on Windows (neither input nor output, though I hear it's possible with some config/system tweaking), but it works perfectly on my Macbook through both my Focusrite Saffire and RME interfaces. Playing without the cable is not officially supported, so your mileage may vary.

Side note: Amazon currently has both Rocksmith games at 75% off - 2014 / Original

u/servingjuryduty · 4 pointsr/rocksmith

Here's something that'll be a great stocking stuffer that most people don't know about: Guitar strings that are the same colors as those in the game. They work great: https://www.amazon.com/DR-Strings-NMCE-10-Electric-Multi-Color/dp/B00DND2SN8

u/joffa101 · 2 pointsr/rocksmith

Not theory, but "Guitar Aerobics: A 52-Week, One-lick-per-day Workout Program for Developing, Improving and Maintaining Guitar Technique" is a good supplement to RS.
https://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Aerobics-One-lick-day-Maintaining/dp/1423414357

u/cosmicgeoffry · 3 pointsr/rocksmith

The way I'm set up to use pedals with my amp and also send direct to Rocksmith; Guitar input to chromatic tuner, tuner output to pedals, pedal output to amp. Then, tuner bypass to real tone cable, RTC to USB. This way, I can have all my effects sent to the amp, and the bypass from the tuner is going straight to Rocksmith so the note detection is still working properly, but I have full control over my tone. Also, this allows me to mute the amp and only hear what's coming through Rocksmith by simply hitting my tuner pedal (I like the realism of hitting my own effects and such, so listening to the Rocksmith tone I can try to kind of match it). Very convenient and efficient for me personally.

Boss chromatic tuner that I use that ultimately makes this setup work. You could also use a signal splitter without a tuner, but I like the added utility.

http://www.amazon.com/Epiphone-Special-Electric-Guitar-Ebony/dp/B0002CZUUG/ref=sr_1_1

Not the best you'll ever hold - but damned good value for the money. Solid tail piece, this is handy for within Rocksmith as you change tunings quite often, those guitars hold their tuning quite well.

u/Mephiska · 1 pointr/rocksmith

You don't mention a budget, but really for a starter guitar I have absolutely no complaints about the Les Paul Special II. It's a fantastic starter guitar and you won't realize it's "really crappy" after. It's from a reputable company with a warranty, and the quality out of the box is way above the awful, cheap no-name brand I tried at first (and immediately returned).

Honestly if you're just starting I wouldn't drop a ton of money on an expensive guitar, especially brand new. The LP Special II is cheap enough that you don't feel like you wasted a ton of money if you want to move on to something better later on, and you may even want to keep it around.

I was so happy with the LP Special II that I picked up the Epiphany DR-100 Acoustic Dreadnought, and was again impressed with the quality for the price ($99).

u/Cool_Hwip_Luke · 5 pointsr/rocksmith

You could try this audio digital-to-analog converter.

Use the optical Toslink out from the console and plug headphones into converter.

That's basically how I play except I have my x41 transmitter as the converter. The only issue might be volume. The x41 transmitter is powered but features a volume knob for the headphones out. I don't see that for the d/a converter.

I don't experience any audio lag through my setup.

E/ You might also need an in-line volume control or headphones with one built in. All together, you should be able to get setup for around $30. Good luck.

u/sidious911 · 1 pointr/rocksmith

What about something like this.

Convert your Optical to RCA or 3.5mm. RCA to speakers if you have any around that support it, or you could use the Headphone jack with an auxiliary cable as well.

u/Subbota · 2 pointsr/rocksmith

I use this headphone amp. One output goes to the realtone cable, one to my amp, and after seeing this post I plugged a third into my laptop so I can record the bass track alone and play around with effects in audacity.

Individual level controls make it easy to get a good signal to each destination.

Check out the book Guitar Aerobics on Amazon. It is a great beginner excersize book. If you are tight on cash, look at the free preview. The lesson for Saturday is what I used to build up strength for hammer ons and oull offs. You also learn one of the most basic pentatonic scale patterns at the same time. Once you get the hammer ons down, do the same excersize but start with the high note on each string and do pull offs.

I noticed you lift your fingers quite a bit from the fretboard, especially your pinky. If you're looking to improve your mechanics a bit, check out Troy Stetina's Book. It helped me quite a bit.

Do you have an amp? You can set up your guitar to go through both the amp and the game using a headphone amplifider or a a female Y cable

I personally use the headphone amplifier setup and turn down the volume on my guitar in the game to 80, the music to 90 and crank up my amp on clean to actually hear what I'm playing ;)

u/ZorMonkey · 1 pointr/rocksmith

Looks like it does. It's for a physical copy, and all physical copies come with the cable.

There's always these.

I intended to purchase these for my first string change but after three weeks I don't hesitate on what color = what string. as /u/Aircommando12 said, it might be easier for me since i'm a wet-behind-the-ears newbie.

u/MyLittleEye · 2 pointsr/rocksmith

I also invested in slightly heavier gauge, (medium) DR NEON Hi-Def MULTI-COLOR Medium · Electric Guitar Strings. They've really helped starting out, particularly since, after much umming and aahhing I decided to invert the strings in Rocksmith to better match with the tab I'm also teaching myself with. I also believe the medium gauge strings deliver a stronger signal to the pickups and hold their pitch better as I grapple and squeeze too hard at unfamiliar chords. Sure they might be slightly harder to bend but they're still featherweight compared to even the light strings I'm using to teaching myself elsewhere on my Gretsch Jim Dandy Acoustic. The Neon strings are a bit gaudy, must be said and I think, once I get around to changing them again they'll have served their purpose and I'll get some Elixirs perhaps.

Did you see that RS1 is on sale?

-----

Steam has imposed a restriction that they are slowly removing. You can either wait for them to remove it or you can buy Rocksmith 1 and gain access to all the RS1 DLC.

The upside of buying RS1 is you can import the songs:

>
You need the disc import to transfer the songs off Rocksmith 1 -> Rocksmith 2014 (52/57 songs)
>
Rocksmith 2014 will automatically import your purchased RS1 DLC without purchase of the import tool.

I have had two sets of DR Neon 10-46 on my beloved PRS SE245 and they match the colours on the game strings. As a musically challenged nerd, I love that!

I've had 2 sets of them, because I think they look awesome! I still suck, however, but that's down to me, not the strings ;)

u/airblizzard · 1 pointr/rocksmith

This is what I do too. I did however get some ground effect hum from both the amp and Rocksmith when using a Y splitter though so I had to use a hum eliminator like this one. Which of course added two more cables to the setup for a total of three instrument cables not including the RealTone cable. Worth it though.

u/That_Guy_Moy · 1 pointr/rocksmith

You have a ground loop. I have a laptop and mixer setup (both on AC) that did this. They were connected through 1/4" audio plugs and had unbelievable noise for a bit. I used a noise/hum eliminator to separate the grounds between the equipment. This one from Behringer did the trick! http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-HD400-BEHRINGER-MICROHD/dp/B000KUD2G4 Put it in between the splitter and your amp and set the rocksmith mixer to zero.

For rocksmith something without a tremolo bar might be better so it's easier to change tunings. It's not that hard but why have the inconvenience when Rocksmith doesn't make use of it.

The highest bitrate is actually 48khz. Check out the cable's description from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ubisoft-10016010-Rocksmith-Real-Cable/dp/B007KGISK6

If you have a guitar you don't mind having colorful strings on, these DR strings (http://www.amazon.com/DR-Strings-NMCE-10-Electric-Multi-Color/dp/B00DND2SN8) have the same color scheme as rocksmith.

Ya? So not mentioning those details kinda indicates some issues they're not sharing? I'm open to not buying it. Before finding it, I was set on buying this Epiphone Les Paul and getting a quality setup.

The top one by "Insane Web Deals" is the same dealer I've gotten my copy from. It's as described (though the box will be beaten around slightly; it comes with ordering online). No issues with Steam.
