I personally would recommend those filters. It's a greater micron size, but it's already much less than that of you 72-25μm filter for a dry sift press. Speaking of which, there's a few tips I will give based off the best results I've seen so far

-If you are able to, use a 150μm, full-spectrum dry sift thats pressed through a 25μm and run more pressure at a lower temperature, with more time and cool them on something cold. This allows for the taste of full spectrum without the need to reintroduce strain profile terpenes.
-Learn to make rosin jam. This is more of a syrup consistent and will allow for easier separation of lipids through the filter and will be closer to a distillate consistency requiring fewer terps.
-Only use enough to emulsify when heated in a magnetic stirrer hot plate.
-Use a magnetic stirrer hot plate
-Use a simple green crystal clear concentrate diluted in distilled or boiled water on warm temperatures immediately after done with use in an ultrasonic cleaner. This will clean, degrease, and be medically sterile when it comes out.
-When using the filter, you want the liquid to be slightly luke warm, this not only speeds up the process, but it also basically sperates more materials like lipids that will separate if not mixed together correctly.
-Get the German made Truth brand, 10ml Borosilicate syringe with a lier lock. That's what the syringe filters lock into. You also get finer graduations with 10ml as opposed to 20ml. You can even hook a PID up to a email coil and fit it around the syringe body and set the temp to 150 just to keep it warm enough to stay liquid but still cool enough to get better filtration.

Actually the whole process is complete in 3-4 hours. As I mentioned, squish rosin via hot and fast method. Get it into he jar ASAP and seal it. If the rosin is very buttery, this process doesn't really work, so emphasis on the 210f squish.. but not too long under the plates.

Now that's its in a sealed jar, you need a candle wax warmer. I have this one. You want to get one that has a deep enough basin, and which has holes in the center like mine which I will explain. Basically you put water in the wax warmer basin, enough to cover the jar without touching the lid. Have the wax warmer already on during the squish. Once jarred, put the jar in the wax warmer so its basically in a warm water bath. Now you want to get a temp on the jar of about 106f-110f. You can check by taking the jar out of the warm and pointing thermometer gun at the bottom corner of the jar. My wax warmer seems to put my jar at 130f, so in order to cool it down to 106f, I point a small fan at it.. I angle it until I get the temp on the jar I want. The holes on the wax warmer allow the cooling from the fan to come in, hence why I suggest a warmer with holes.

Now that its in the warmer at the right temp, just got to wait. Take it out at 2 hours to check the bottom of it, you are looking for bubbles to form. The rosin tends to form many many tiny bubbles, but you are looking for the bigger bubbles.. once there are plenty of big bubbles on the bottom, then the jam is ready. For me this happens around 3.5 - 4 hours. Let it cool for 10 - 15 min, give it a stir and its ready to dab!

One thing to note is the jar might seal air tight, I use ones with metal lids. Also the jar should also be 1/4 - 1/2 full or it won't work. So if you have 1-2 grams of rosin, I put that in a 5ml jar similar to what rosin companies sell 1 gram in. For an ounce run of flower, use a 1 oz uline jar with metal lid.

This is my set up. Really, really easy. I dont have a garage full of tools and i still thought it was easy.

Disassemble this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01M14RI79/ref=zg_bs_11058261_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=F6E9C1ERF8C0HBFJSA98 (having some of those really small screwdrivers like you'd use to work on eye glasses makes this part cake)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ZS6JU02/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1510258631&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=aluminum++1%2F2+inch&dpPl=1&dpID=31FkfqMeaYL&ref=plSrch use a dremel to cut this into plates to sit on both sides of each of your hair straightener heat plates. Having the aluminum against the back of the hair straightener plate will keep you from smashing those wire leads and allow you to put more pressure.

I tried a few diff arbor presses and vises, for my small nug presses (i press a nug at a time, its just for me and rosin lasts me a really long time in my wax pen) .... the 5 inch model of this one gives me plenty of pressure and doesnt break the bank. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003JSY8S0/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1510258796&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=yost%2B5%2Binch%2Bvise&dpPl=1&dpID=41QF1yC8WyL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1

And thats it. At first i used jb weld to hold my plates to each other but found that metal wire (with slots cut into everything to make the wire stay in place and the plates to meet flush) was far easier. Only tool i really used was a dremel and of course my laser thermometer to constantly check accuracy of the temps. I get great results with this setup and it was super cheap. I can post pics of mine if you want. Got it zip tied to the inside of a milk crate to make it portable and stand upright on its own. It looks pretty rough but works great.

Edit. ... personal opinion here ..... but beware of builds using arbor presses, yeah they work, but for my money its easier to twist that 5 inch vise tight really hard then wait and watch the timer...... vs having to stand there with all my weight leaning on an arbor press handle for 60 seconds at a time to keep pressure on. That yost 5 inch vise gives me better returns than i got from an arbor press and it's less work.

Hope i dont get laughed too hard but here is my Frankenstein https://m.imgur.com/a/bOZ1P (note the notches made with the dremel to keep the wire from sliding around the vise when you tighten it.) Works like a champ and cheaply replaced parts.

''eco crunchy, super kind fair trade dank recycled'' means... a pile of old newspapers and paper bags, bleached out.
They don't have to tell you that paper is recycled on packages if they don't want to. I suspect all brown stuff.
T Sac tea filters are pure hemp, and are at Peet's coffee shops. They are flimsy as fuck, but can be used as an inner wrap; and a courser, stronger wrap can be applied around that. Like gift wrapping something twice. Magically, once the pressed puck is cooled down, the inner wrap will pop free from the outer wrap quite easily, so you can reuse the outer wrap. No other inner wrap pops free as easily as the hemp T Sac filters.
I posted these instructions 2years ago, for all my detractors saying I don't share things. I shared many things with the early crowd, and encourage everyone new to peruse the first year of posts, where ideas flowed more freely, from many trying to figure it all out together.
Maybe a newcomer can use these early posts to come up with something better, or see ''secret'' things that people keep close to their hips at this point.

33 bucks for 1000. Not bad. Much more expensive at Peet's.

How many watts are those coils? I don’t think they are going to be very effective.

Cartridge heaters are great because it’s east to drill a hole and they are designed to fit snugly.

I’m not sure about the best way to attach a coil to a plate.

You are going to run into issues machining a slot/recess for the coil and then also have issues getting a good thermal transfer from the coil to the plate.

StonerMetals 3x6” plates on amazon, these are reasonable sized metal plates for a pretty good price. They are just pieces of metal and will need modification.

You will need to drill that out and add cartridge heaters, temp probe and then get a pid controller. Pair that up with a 6 or 12ton harbor freight press and you should have a press for around $300-400.

green genes diy rosin press tutorial on youtube is a great guide to set up a press.

the tutorial also has more detailed links for putting the whole setup together.

These are the jars I use. 1.5 oz but it is $17 for 24. I have had them in the oven at higher temps, submerged in hot water, and the likes with no issues. I also kinda dig the hexagon shape. Makes it easy to get out every last dab toward the end. Heat and lean jar on side and it all flows to one of the 6 sides. I would say these are ideal for 3g+ if you are going to jar tek. Good luck and please post results! We aren't hearing enough about people's jar teks

Maybe someone can weigh in with some more scientific and/or exact knowledge, but I can at least give you my impressions lately, it's more a hobby for me but I really should write all this down anyways...

Temps... 165~190 = butter range, takes a bit longer, and the lower the more thicker whiter butter consistency. At 200 it is getting into the more sappy / golden yellow instead of the opaque white color with lower temps. Sometimes if you press at 190 or so it will change from somewhat sappy into butter if left overnight (strain dependent?). Yield is relative to temp from what I see, so if you press at 165 you get some white cake frosting looking material, but somewhat lower yields than if you press at 180 and still get some pretty nice butter.

Pressing method... I use a simple system that works for me. I do have a pressure gauge on my press, so if you don't, you may have to figure out the steps, but for my press, each pump of the hydraulic hand pump takes it up about 1 ton.

use a timer, ~1 min per ton...

  1. Press to almost 1 ton, slightly less maybe 900psi on the gauge. wait 1 min...
  2. Pump handle once to move to 2 ton pressure on gauge. wait 1 min...
  3. Pump handle once to move to 3 ton pressure on gauge. wait 1 min...
  4. Pump handle once to move to 4 ton pressure on gauge. wait 1 min...
  5. ... sometimes I stop here, sometimes I do 5 tons, never usually past 5 tons. 1 min per ton still... you get it?

I may vary slightly from this pressing method, always adding more time if anything, but usually just stick to it. Also, I would love to run a bunch of tests to see what is really best. Because sometimes strange things happen I forget I was pressing and leave it at 2 tons for 15 mins and look and there is a nice amount of rosin batter there! So maybe I should increase these lower times, I am still learning too ;)

    Other notes...

I prepress using just my hands to form into a 'disk shape' about 2-3 grams around 1 inch around / 3/4 inch high/thick. I prefer material that is so sticky it just forms into a nice disk and all sticks to itself. Usually this is just a matter of hydration. After squishing the puck ends up about 3x3 when flat. I have not used filter bags much yet, I did try them some, but mostly I just press with no filter bag. I may use them to process more quantity if I need to, noticed I can fit an extra gram or two using a bag without worrying about the 'puck' expanding beyond the plates.

I always start with material hydrated to 55-65% (measure with a hygrometer in a ball jar). I prefer to just start with my own home grown and never let it dip below this humidity level, but rehydration can be done.

favorite parchment, heavy duty, better release IMHO - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007G1E5NO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I used this tutorial as well for my making my plates.

I recommend buying the PID controllers from Inkbird themselves its cheaper and they added Fahrenheit.
Inkbird ITC-106VH $29.99 Amazon.com the wire diagram provided in the tutorial is still exactly the same.

I also ordered my aluminum from Midwest Steel Supply they are cheaper and you can order the size you want. I recommend using smaller 3x3 plates for a half to one ton arbor press to increase overall PSI and also help your rosin flow away from the heat.

I also ordered two of these boxes for the PID controllers from a diy enail post here
Jameco 11922-R

Edit: to anwser the question, is an arbor press the way to go? The more pressure the higher the yield possible depending on the strain your pressing. I opted to build a 6 ton press myself using this from harbor freight also use this 20% off coupon

Big thanks to Scott /u/HoneyRiver710 for helping me out. Hopefully this info will help you.

Boveda sucks up water soluble terps. It's a horrible thing to use, but it's got all the mind share.

The best technique I've found is using a salad saver, and putting just about 10 ml of distilled water in the bottom chamber. Put in a dark cool spot for 12 to 24 hours. Also seal the salad saver itself.

The idea is to find the right amount of water, so that it's all evaporated by the time you get the RH that you want.

I got in to growing just so I could press at peak freshness. Now I'm breeding the best pressing strains that I've found and making my own hybrids.

Shameless IG plug.

u/icraig91 · 1 pointr/rosin

Hrm. I use Reynolds parchment for mine and have no issues, but the rosin I have right now is either relatively stable, or very, very stable so sticking isn't an issue. The relatively stable stuff I've seen be difficult on the clear plastic-type papers like these : https://www.amazon.com/Storage-Food-Grade-Transparent-Terpene-Resistant/dp/B0799GGQDC. The Reynolds parchment has been way better.

u/Smokadabowla · 2 pointsr/rosin

It's super strain dependent. The lowest I've gotten is 10% and that's from a single strain. Average is 15%+. Humidity is a big thing too. With these and dialing the time and temps down on certain high yielding strains you can easily get 20%+. Gorilla Glue #4 and Blueberry have been my biggest yielders so far(pics are a couple weeks old but still using the same flower today). If you tell the people at the dispensaries that you're going to press it they might be able to direct you towards better yielding strains too. And instead of using an ounce or more just testing times and temps, you might want to just press small buds one at a time, checking out the color, stability, yield, flavor for like single dab presses. Then you find what works the best without having to buy an ounce of each strain just to experiment.

Osir 1.5" inch straightener plates + control temp gutted and taped onto the straightener. The plates are melted into the pads for my clamp (they're the alternate wide ones instead of the regular pads like you see on everyone elses) and the circuit for the temp control I just taped back onto the edge of the clamp. I also carefully broke off just the plastic cover for the temp circuit so that way I could use the buttons. just used a bunch of electrical tape.

I'd give a full tutorial but I dont really have the money to go buy a bunch of stuff and then wait for it to ship again and all that. Theres a couple good tutorials out there on how to build one, just search "HMK Rosin Press" on google and youll eventually find something.

heres a link to the straightener (which I'd highly recommend despite what tutorials recommend, this has very accurate temp control settings) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010BBKVYC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Also I want to add that with max pressure on the hand press, vs max pressure on the bottle jack, the bottle jack version is yielding on average of 5x more oil. Hand presses are complete junk.

When do you know its ready and the alcohol is completely gone?

Do you reintroduce terpenes?

Since all the alcohol is evaporated do you think it's harmful? I understand you're not a doctor (maybe) and will not take your advice as gospel.

Next time, consider Boveda 62 packs to rehydrate instead.

Also, rosin isn't 100% THC, so it doesn't mean it was 20% THC flower when you get 20% yield.
