I've got a tomtom spark cardio music watch. It's great. They are $140 or so off amazon. It has a nice HR monitor and uploads to Strava and plays music. I set all my intervals in and hit the road. It also has pacing with vibration, etc. It captures my position in seconds. So far so good.

The updated model (spark 3) has some extra navigation tools and is bundled with headphones for another hundred bucks. I didnt need that.

Speaking from experience of buying about 4 or 5 difference cheap (sub $20 pairs on Amazon w/ great reviews), it's just not worth it. The materials are sub-par and will likely hurt like hell on any run over 3 miles. Even using Body Glide, my legs still rubbed with the cheap materials.

Best recommendation - try to find an outlet store for a major brand name. Personally, I go to a Nike outlet about 1 hour drive away. Their running shorts run about $30-40 per pair, and if you're lucky, run occasional clearance for $15. I've seen this twice and picked up about 3 pairs each time.

Other option is to try compression shorts. Those you can get without the same concerns of rubbing (from my experience at least).

Links for fun.

If all you're looking for is something that will beep every minute or 45 seconds or whatever, just look for a digital watch with a countdown timer. Casio and Timex both make watches that work well for this for around $20-30. Here's an example.

The smart watches from Garmin, Tomtom, and Apple are really overkill unless you want GPS functionality.

We usually use some type of waist belt, arm band, of if you are a girl, tucked in the sports bra (no link needed). For bigger items, like if you are carrying a wallet or water/ snacks as well, larger belts work, there are running back packs.

Oh, sorry, I do wear a fanny pack that's mostly unnoticeable to me. I tuck it into my shorts to keep it from bouncing.

If you're looking for something that doesn't require a phone, allowing you to go without a fanny pack altogether, consider one of Sony's Sports Wearables.
