There are numerous literary references in Rush songs if you're interested.
Have a look at this. It's from 1995-1996, but it's a good start.
"Clockwork Angels" has also been translated into a novel.
There are all kinds of Easter eggs in Rush's work, as well. The cover of "Clockwork Angels" is a clock face with the hands pointing at 9:12, or 21:12 in 24-hour time. I'll leave the rest for you to find. It's part of the fun.
Also, Geddy Lee changed the way I thought about music in 1996 when I discovered Rush, and made me a damn good bass player because of it. I don't want to brag, but I've never auditioned for a band and lost the part. In my current band, I beat out 41 other bass players for the part, and I'm 15-20 years younger than the other guys. Geddy inspired me to sit down and work on getting good. I've been playing bass for more than half my life (since I was 13 back in 1993), and it's probably the thing I'm best at, behind my actual (and less fun) job.
In short, some people don't get it, but Rush changed my life. Band mates are second only to family in loyalty, and I've met some amazing people along the way. I don't think I would have been afforded the experiences I've had if my girlfriend when I was 16 didn't get me "Exit... Stage Left" for my birthday.
Anyway, I'm rambling. Good luck to you on your class. I think you've got lots of material to work with in studying Rush.
It's an awesome book stuffed with rare photos and scans of old tickets and promotional posters over their career, my Grandma got it for me last Christmas and it's great gift for a Rush fan, here is a link if anyone is interested

Hemispheres is one of my favorites, I have nice memories of the time that I was listening to that album a lot!
I want to suggest that you get the Different Stages 3-CD live set. It's a well-rounded look at the bulk of their catalog. I prefer many of the tracks on this set to the studio versions; they've very dynamic and the songs have had some improvements made to their arrangements since the original recordings.
Look, it's like $7. You won't be sorry.

I have a Audio-Technica AT-LP60. It's not a bad little turntable, but it's also my first one. If you're looking for something really good, I don't think I'd recommend it. If you're just looking for something to play your records, then it's not bad. I don't have any complaints with it, especially since you don't need a pre-amp for it, but I am looking forward to the day when I can replace it with something better. You're stuck with the cartridge it comes with, but you can upgrade the stylus.
I'm sorry but we'll need you to turn in your Rush fan card for not remembering the title of a classic like "The Spirit of Radio". :)

No, but I did some research on line and found this instead. Ordered and will test it out before heading up there. Better quality than that first link.
Hopefully you'll be able to see the quality after the concert :)
Alles Gute is a good "best of" sampler. Enjoy!
While the accompanying novel wasn't the best literature I've ever read, it was interesting to help bring the story in together.

And Headlong Flight is just awesome. Not sure what's not to get there. :)
I'm not entirely sure that Rush management was behind this project. Remember, Atlantic owns the American master rights. They can sell them whenever they see fit. I think the project was driven from Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). Universal? Hear me out.
The Rush M.O. seems to be boxed set/special edition remaster on the 40th anniversary. We got one for the debut album, for FbN, 2112, and FtK.
So where the hell did this thing drop from? Well, for starters, no new remaster. So Alex wasn't involved (he usually approves the sonic treatment). Instead, it appears to be part of a whole series of colored 200-gram vinyl re-issues of the classic rock cannon (hat tip /u/RogerMooresEyebrows). Check this store selling them: https://thesoundofvinyl.us/
Each of these records is listed as issued by [orginal label]/UMe, except in cases where the original label is a wholly owned subsidiary of UMe like Capital Records. So Pet Sounds is listed as "Capital Records", while Pump is listed as "Geffen/UMe".
While the tweet came from the official Rush account, the content of the tweet certainly came from the communications team at UMe. You can tell because of the near-identical tweets from KISS last month:
https://twitter.com/KISSOnline/status/976898205907587072
https://twitter.com/KISSOnline/status/977183529376407556
That's why there's no significance to the project for Rush fans-- it's not an anniversary, it's not part of a series, there's really nothing here for fans. It's for people who are collecting a series of cannon rock albums from many bands. UMe must have put 2112 on their list, and reached out to Atlantic for the masters to do a joint limited edition issue. Rush just allowed their twitter to send the announcement as a courtesy.
Mine was a gift, but they have it here on Amazon. I get so many comment on it, it's a great conversation starter.
I asked because Vapor Trails is the only one I haven't been able to acquire, but I've honestly never looked online. It's one of my favorite albums but it's so compressed and digital, the vinyl is worthless.
EDIT: They go for a pretty penny http://www.amazon.com/Vapor-Trails-Rush/dp/B001BZBLQA
My Reddit secret Santa got me these pint glasses last year. Although I am a huge fan these are not something I would have bought on my own, but I love em.

At the risk of downvotes, I cringe when I hear 2112 done after the 70s. Geddy just couldn't physically sing it anymore. The version on AtWaS is fantastic; I love hearing Geddy switch between pained scream and his natural voice, but obviously one can't do that forever.
I recently got Rush: Classic Albums: 2112 & Moving Pictures (which I highly recommend) and there are clips of live 70s versions of 2112 next to 80s versions, and it's night and day. I honestly don't know why they showed the clips from the 80s.
I've had this album sitting on my shelf for a few years now, and I had to share it.
If you like, you can buy it on Amazon. They even have another album covering Exit... Stage Left as well!
Ghost Rider is the most acclaimed. But for my money, his latest book is a great $20 to spend, with all the pics and stories he tells. It's called Far and Wide, and again - well worth the $20. Here's the link....

The Victor CD can be bought here: https://www.amazon.com/Victor-Alex-Lifeson/dp/B000002J7S
iTunes here: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/victor/id363027581
(damn, this album's over 20 years old now???)
I love Victor so, so much.
I got a copy of Rush: The Illustrated History and found it to be pretty good. A lot of the written content is pretty similar to Beyond the Lighted Stage, but, as the title implies, there is a ton of visual content to look through.
Link to the book, "Chemistry". Great read BTW, 2010.
Yes.

Yep - received the announcement from amazon this morning.
View here.
"Rush: Classic Albums: 2112 & Moving Pictures" I'm guessing.
You read that right.

Unless you're talking about vinyl in which case I have no idea.
