A camera and a tripod. Doesn't need to be anything fancy.

This little guy will set you back $6. It'll fit into a jacket or cargo pocket easily.

I've got this or its twin, about $15. Collapsed it's a sturdy bracer, extended, you can set it up on a wall, car, table, rock, etc. I've got some amazing shots at Aquatic Park just after sunset bracing against a light pole.

I've got the granddaddy of the Olympus Stylus waterproof camera. It's got its limitations (I'd really prefer a more configurable and replaceable lens DSLR), but along with the tripod, it slips into a pocket or shoulder bag. Nothing beats being there with a camera for grabbing shots. It's got some manual control as well as a bunch of pre-set modes, including some long-exposure settings (4 seconds).

Shoot lots and lots of pictures. Most of the secret of getting the perfect shot is taking a lot of bad ones. You'll learn framing, exposure, composure, lighting, shutter speeds, film speed (or sensor speed) as you go. And yes, you can do a lot post-processing too, Photoshop or Gimp (free software).

Most smartphones are actually surprisingly good cameras, again a tripod (and some sort of mount for the phone) help for any long exposure.

And for night photography: it's amazing what leaving the shutter open for a few seconds will do. There's a lot more light than you realize, color and saturation will fill in, anything in motion will blur. The sky often has some color even well after sunset that long exposures will fill in.

I live on the ground floor in the back unit with a sliding door. i do wake up and see condensation so i open them up.

i leave the doors open but i do have damp rids in there. two of the FG90, its a bit bigger then the ones at the dollar store but i do put those in there sometimes.

i will check at Daiso, thanks for the suggestion. we live next door to the dollar tree so its an easy walk. daiso is not so far away though. i'll make sure to buy a few

shit. i just bidded on another aera max 100 on ebay and i didnt realize it wasnt a dehumidifier. i'll look into one though.

i use fakespot, camelcamelcamel, and appreciate you recommending that. love those services. i often look on letgo too.

i have a pretty nice camera bag, Dakine Reload Camera Backpack, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006N0OS68/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1, that i keep everything in along with a damprid, and charcoal bag. i also leave it flat. wasnt sure if i should buy a dehumidifier camera box eventually.

You just need any domestic filter that has a hepa filter. Something like this. https://www.amazon.com/GermGuardian-UPGRADED-Sanitizer-Allergens-Guardian/dp/B07HYFXFDM/ref=zg_bs_510192_3/130-5258854-8228955?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=QY2MVZZ0G8XESGRFSQ1N

You want to make sure it is a "true" hepa filter as well. There are different levels and true is the highest. $80 is a bit pricey but your health is priceless.

"It's important to distinguish between HEPA and True HEPA air purifiers to ensure that your needs are met. Essentially, True HEPA air purifiers captures up to 99.97 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns, which include a range of allergens and odors. On the other hand, a purifier with a HEPA Type filter is capable of capturing 99 percent of particles that are 2 microns or larger, such as pet dander and dust. While these particles are too tiny for the human eye to see, they are large enough to penetrate your lungs and cause problematic reactions."

ITT: people getting hung up about the gun(s).

You all wouldnt be saying shit if he put in a machete for self defense.

Moving on:

The powerbank should probably be one with a solar cell. It isnt going to be very much but if power is out, at least the sun will help a little.

Also I'm not sure how long this kit is supposed to last. According to FEMA, at least 72 hours if not longer. I've also seen some rumblings of a food supply to last two weeks.

Rations vs Supply

One's literally ready to go out of the wrapper the other needs prep.

An adjustable wrench as well to turn off water or more importantly natural gas flows

While I agree with you that SF is certainly "known", there's a reason brands (and, you could definitely treat/consider a city as a brand) continue to advertise. Colgate's been known for a LONG time, but if you talk to their CMO I doubt he/she would ever be content that people are "familiar enough" with Colgate for the time being, so they'll drop their ad spend for the next decade or so until they need to re-up brand awareness.

Good book that explores the subject (with a scientific slant) -
http://www.amazon.com/How-Brands-Grow-What-Marketers/dp/0195573560

To be clear, I don't know why a city that already has more demand than supply for all that is "SF" and yet clearly doesn't want to let itself get on with the times and grow needs to advertise, I DO feel that were it trying to capitalize on its growing popularity, hosting the Superbowl would re-inforce and further that agenda.

511 is your friend. Interesting day trips may include visiting Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz (the Beach Boardwalk is lots of fun), Muir Woods, and/or Berkeley (there's a very interesting flea market at the Ashby BART station parking lot on weekends).
Don't forget the ferries to Angel Island, Alameda, or Sausalito.

Also check out the book Stairway Walks in San Francisco. We got this book as a gift and it's been a fascinating set of hikes through obscure neighborhoods.

Great advice thanks. Also for DIY bike mechanics this book is highly recommended. Actually I have the original version from 35 years ago, but hopefully it's only improved with age.

u/Casting_Aspersions · 6 pointsr/sanfrancisco

It's much, much more complicated than that. GM perhaps put the last nail in the coffin of the streetcar system in many cities, but their demise was attributable to a number of complex social, economic, policy, and technological forces.

If you would like to learn more, this is a very comprehensive and academic, but still readable study: http://www.amazon.com/Los-Angeles-Automobile-Making-Modern/dp/0520073959

It focuses on LA, but many of the same dynamics hold true for the Bay Area.

This is the Chinese exhibit. There's a description of it in this very expensive book from the official photographer, Isaiah Taber. As it happens, John McLaren (after whom McLaren Park is named) wasn't a terrible fan of the fair and its effect on GG Park. He had almost all the buildings dynamited or demolished.

An interesting but unrelated story from the news at the time goes, in part:

> But what the Government officers are worried about is the rumor that each of the Chinese returning will carry with him a certificate of registration as a laborer under the McCreary act, and that sooner or later all the certificates so carried away will return with a Chinese attached who will be landed. For one of the actors at the Midwinter Fair to change his silk garments for the coarse blouse of a workman, to shave his head just a half inch more across the crown, and with a little India ink to make a mole or two as distinguishing marks is an easy task. Then he comes down and registers as Ah Bang, a gardener from across the bay, and getting his certificate takes it home with him. To a countryman in China about his height and age the actor sells his laborer's certificate and the purchaser proceeds to duplicate with India ink the distinguishing marks called for by the paper. It is not a hard task for one Chinese to personate another, the race resemblance being so strong that reputable white men have time and again gone upon the stand and under oath positively identified a Chinese who later on proved to be an impostor.

This is part of the reason people don't think they can afford kids, or can't afford a second child, etc. Everyone has been convinced they need to gold plate childhood. It's really easy to get a decent stroller for free from someone whose kid is now older, or if you really must, this stroller costs less than fifty bucks, and would work just fine. Bur you're probably convinced you need this one.

I was taught to do caricature when I worked in theme parks. I learned a lot from How to Draw the Marvel Way and studying great comic artists like Moebius and classic pen and ink artists like Charles Dana Gibson

Air purifier thread:

I got the LEVOIT HEPA and carbon filter LV-PUR131S nine months ago. It quickly collects a ridiculous amount of stuff; where does it all come from?! I use each filter for three months (replacements from Amazon are $29.99 so $10 month) and gently toothbrush the HEPA side once a month. My friends compliment my air! Its rectangular shape is much easier to position in a snug room than round units.

$169.99 after the green $20 coupon.

This book is a good read

One of the core ideas is that, counterintuitively, technological connectivity has made space in cities more valuable, not less, because despite things like video chat and email, etc, the best place for a business is still in the places where people are physically nearby.

Season of the Witch

Pretty sure Bird and Scoot use this scooter from Xiaomi. I've been debating between buying this or a Boosted Board vs just Ubering it to my office from the Caltrain.

Lime I think makes their own scooter. Their scooter seriously sucks when it comes to handling bumps on the road.

u/SanFransicko · 3 pointsr/sanfrancisco

No, I was thinking about Moscone, whoopsie. He was also involved with Diane Feinstein in her activism days and then her mayoral campaign. I read Season of the Witch maybe a year ago and it was fascinating. I don't know where I got Agnew from.

u/lordnikkon · 37 pointsr/sanfrancisco

because Xiaomi just flooded the market with these new scooters and 3 different companies started buying them up and slapping their logo on them. You can buy those scooters on amazon for $500 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076KKX4BC

This scooter only came out at the beginning of the year and it is the first electric scooter to be imported to the US in mass numbers

u/NDoilworker · 26 pointsr/sanfrancisco

I'm a fan. You can buy one yourself for 500$ apparently the company was trying to keep the manufacturer a secret but here it is:
