Youngling, the force cannot be lost but it can be found.
Kits are the easiest way to go by far but there is not a sub $400 kit that I know of that can reach the North pennies. So if you go with a kit it is not going to be turn-key (you are going to have to modify its reach).
A lot of teams (including some of the ones I work with) really like the OWI-535 as it is cheap and easy to modify. Most of the other team I see at State every year are using VEX creations. And then there is that one robot from that one team, a fully custom 1:1 matching action robotic arm pair.
If you have the time, money, and skill; building one will give you way more options and flexibility when it comes to the competition. If you are building your own based on an arduino control; look into high torque servos, and these (I found them linked off of a video I cannot find at the moment).
And finally I will leave you with this Youtube link to something that was posted over in the student forums.
Our team uses a variety of different types: Gorilla Glue, Titebond, and more. Gorilla Glue is really good, but just be sure that you wipe off the excess or it will expand. Titebond is really reliable but it takes a very long time to dry. Zapagap is pretty pricey but it dries insanely fast and it is really strong.
Here's a link to all of the glues: 1. Gorilla Glue can be found at Home Depot 2. Titebond We put the Titebond in to smaller containers which can be found here 3. Zap a Gap
EDIT: We also use something called InstaSet Accelerator. It should be used only in emergencies along with zapagap.
I got one of those things in the goodie bags too! (The poster and safety goggles were really cool btw). Anyways heres a similar product from amazon

My team got 1st in Virginia for hovercraft (division C), and what we did was much safer than cutting the wires of the battery off. Also when you cut the wires off and clip the alligator clips in, there is not really a way to recharge the battery anymore. What I do is I get male and female bullet connectors, and connect the wires that way. Here's a link of some good bullet connectors. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E5T81TI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2kE-ybNTCRTCX
