I moved to Belgrade 2 months ago and I'm currently learning the language, too. I have some language lessons in Belgrade. The best way to really learn the language is to live in the actual country, it helps a lot just to hear people talk Serbian every day.

I can also recommend two books, which are really good and go in depth into the grammar, too.

> Milorad Pavic

More specifically, in case you love puzzle-books such as Nabokov's Pale Fire, you might like The Dictionary of the Khazars a lot (and I consider it his best novel).

In case historical (meta)fiction is something you'd prefer, Radoslav Petkovic is your man. Generally unknown in Serbia, but terrifyingly good in both technique and scope. Destiny, Annotated is the only book of his translated to English.

Generally: Andric, Selimovic, and Kis are the big three (that is, most of their famous work has been translated). Andric is a realist greatly focusing on the historical squabbles of Serbs and Turk conquerors. Selimovic is much more individualistic, with a noticeable nihilist-poetic streak, although both of his major works are set in the 19th century. Kis is a modernist dealing with questions of personal and communal heritage in the immediate shadow of the Holocaust, as well as the dangers of ideology and human propensity for violence. He is (save for "Hourglass") much easier to read than the previous two.

In Serbia it's not customary to exchange gifts for Xmas, also if she is Orthodox, the Xmas is on January 7th.

Smoki is a type of snack with peanut butter that's quite popular.

Pffft. Ne želim da znam koliko sam para slupao na kupljenje Kindle knjige. ;) Stra-o-bal-no.

I do Memrise, but you have to supplement with a grammar book in order to form your own sentences.

BCS, a Grammar by Ronelle Alexander

The red book with the same name/author has vocabulary and grammar, but it kind of sucks. "Here's how to say a word in all three languages. Here's a grammar case you should know, it's important and we'll give you one example."
