TLDR: Have decided to build a photo/video editing PC in a Cougar QBX case - i think I've got half the parts decided, but they need a sanity check and some recommendations to fill gaps. Aiming for max £1200 / $1500.

Following my last starting post, it became clear that my idea of mounting a somewhat high performance machine behind my monitor wasn't really going to work. Similarly the smallest cases that could practicably work e.g.: Node 202, were going to be a pretty tight fit and need some pretty active temperature management and construction handiwork which is a it beyond me. I think the QBX probably just about qualifies as SFF though, so would be really grateful for any further advice :)

Having spend most of the last day reading about all number of cases, I think the QBX Cougar case is my best bet. Attracted by the NCase M2, but the price was a bit steep for me and I can't afford to wait for order fulfillment.

I considered AMD vs Intel. I think I'll be mainly doing things that don't benefit from multi-cores, so have decided to go for intel.

I have the following parts picked out already, grateful for any suggestions for those, there are also some gaps. Really grateful for build suggestions on the following:

Motherboard: The one selected is one that was put forward in another thread. I'm not really clear what makes that particular motherboard a good or bad choice. It is described as 'gaming' but gaming won't be a primary feature of the machine - but if it means decent sound and graphics card support great.

Case: Couldn't find the QBX case on PC Part Picker - but I'm going for this: https://www.amazon.com/Cougar-gaming-QBX-Case/dp/B00ZV5YKY6

CPU cooler: Not sure what will fit given the case being small-ish, have noted down Pallas 140mm Low Profile CPU Cooler and Noctua NH-D15 in my research but what would you recommend?

RAM: I want 16GB, but how much does the brand (or speed?) matter?

GPU: I think I want a Geforce 1060 with 6GB memory, but which variant. This seems quite important for the machine, some of the other threads on Reddit talk about having a 'blower' model in the QBX case - likewise heard they can be noisy. Thoughts appreciated, but if the case can include any alternative cooling I might consider it. Don't care about asthetics, do care about noise/heat.
Storage: Will the SSD selected happily work with the motherboard slot?

Power supply: Again, going off another recommendation in a QBX thread in that the SFX PSU with adaptor fits well and gives more space inside. Happy for other suggestions though.

Monitor: Lots of photographers have recommended the Dell monitor listed. Again, will consider others but would like something that is a well supported recommendation for my price point.

Keyboard/Mouse: Want wireless variants, but don't need anything super special.

I always recommend the inwin chopin or its uglier/cheaper sister the BQ656T. Yours looks different from mine lol but I'm confident they all share the same internal shape and stuff. The Chopin is mostly OOS thats why prices are driven up. But when its in stock you can find it for ~100USD

I have a 2400g, asrock fatality itx mobo, and m.2 ssd. The 150w psu is plenty as your OC will be thermally limited. As for cooler options, in this case the stock cooler will fit but if you do want to OC, upgrade to the noctua l9a or c7 cu. I have also seen people remove the fan from the stock cooler and gerry rig an 120mm fan on the original heat sink with good results. I personally have the l9a and i strapped a 120mm thin fan to it for better results.

At this size you will not beable to fit any 3.5" drives. As for the build, its o k. You should break down the case so you can re reroute the psu cables thru the front and behind the mobo, and with some patience you can get it looking nice.

I personally love my chopin and its really smol. Some people have said the tiny psu fan gets loud, but personally I've never had a problem. I'm also really impressed with the 2400g and its performance. Pretty easy to OC/undervolt. AMA

Hey almost my part set!!

I'm also going for the mini ITX SG13 with a 3700X on an ASUS X570, and same power supply and memory...

I've just bought the CPU at USD 305 on NewEgg page at eBay. It could works for you and you will save 25 bucks!

Why you decided for Cooler Master Cooler? I'm thinking on Corsair H60, it's $60 on Amazon today. I had the H110iv2 for 2 years and never got any issue, CPU was always fresh.

For GPU I'm still on the fence for a 2060/2060 Super or 2070 it all depends on Black Friday deals, let's hope we see good prices!

I still don't get the parts, but accordingly to what I've read, everyone seems to also recommend "SilverStone short power cable set" as it seems that will facilitate what's already a tight place.

Don't know if it will work OK, I hope it will but I'm interested on knowing about the progress of your build anyway!

Good luck with your build, I hope my two cents could be useful!

Thanks so much! I was really happy with how the color came out as well! it's hard to tell in the album but there is actually a sparkle on the finished powdercoat.... under the right light it just POPS I love it! Also the MSI Ventus card and custom cables match so nicely.... I really am impressed with the bag as well. My first time fitting it into the case was yesterday for the photo album I posted... I will leave a link to it for you here:

I'm really happy to be part of the Sliger club and many thanks!

Both of those cases have pretty specific PSU specs. They want a flexATX PSU, which are usually noisy. I think you get the best mileage out of an HDPlex 400 watt DC-DC psu and a Dell 330 Watt AC-DC adapter

They aren't cheap, but then sffPCs tend to cost a bit more. I've used both in some of my Ultra sff builds and love them.

Of the 1u flex atx PSUs they recommend, I think I'd trust the Seasonic the most. Seasonic makes great PSUs, and It costs less than either of the two components I listed.

You can way undervolt a dGPU to way bellow stock values if you are concerned about power. FYI my flashed reference vega 56 to 64, consumes 220W under firestrike extreme (1030mv/1632 target frequency, +50% power limit). Can possibly do something like 900mV/1500/+0 PL and it will be about <150W under full load and stay cool.

Edit: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASRock-Radeon-Vega-Phantom-Gaming/dp/B07HWV23MP?SubscriptionId=AKIAJKVC5TM5C4Y6TOSQ&tag=haggle-web-en-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B07HWV23MP is a good deal. Blower cards are great in ITX cases as they exhaust all the hot air, decreasing internal case temperature and allowing better CPU temps (Noticed -5 degrees using blower vs open air gpu in my case). If you set the GPU at 700 rpm which is the slowest it will go, it is inaudible even when I get near the case, case fans produce more noise

Edit 2:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-11276-graphics-Radeon-Express/dp/B078NPPX3H?SubscriptionId=AKIAJKVC5TM5C4Y6TOSQ&tag=haggle-web-en-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B078NPPX3H might be a better option for 20GBP more, it's not from amazon directly but as checked it's from a well established seller with high ratings fulfilled by amazon. Sapphire cards are the best when it comes to AMD (followed by Powercolor's).

Everything looks good imo, although you'll definitely want to pick up another Noctua A9 PWM fan for the cpu cooler as it only comes with 1 fan. Also I would look for some low profile ram as they will prolly interfere with the cpu cooler, like this: https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-2x16GB-3200MHz-Memory-CMK32GX4M2B3200C16/dp/B016ORTNI2/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=corsair+lpx+2x16gb&qid=1555870384&s=electronics&sr=1-6

Also have to agree the 750 psu is prolly a bit overkill, but up to you lol.

Some thermal paste as well if you don't have any: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZJS8Q6S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Also, instead of watercooling later, why not slap on an Accelero III on the gpu instead? https://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-Accelero-Xtreme-III-CrossFire/dp/B007YLUCKQ/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=accelero+III&qid=1555870038&s=electronics&sr=1-1-catcorr

I debated going watercooling for a while too, and unless you plan to do some serious overclocking, I personally don't see the need for it. I have an Accelero III on my 2080 with a custom fan profile, and I can barely hear the fans when running demanding games. I hover between 60-64 degrees Celsius with an overclock and my fans don't spin up past 1500 rpm.

If you do plan on going with the Accelero, I'd recommend getting these fans on the bottom of the case as exhaust: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C5VG64V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You'd basically get rid of the fan shroud on the stock Accelero and have the bottom fans set to exhaust. I have another A12 fan on the side bracket as intake as well, but that's up to you. I'm considering putting a 3.5mm hdd on there instead.

i also live in Canada, so i know your pain, lol! my current build is in a Lian Li PC-Q21 that i bought a couple years ago when it was available on newegg. nowadays, i noticed it can still be bought off eBay from Japan, but double the price!

here are two cases that i've always had an eye on:

This Noctua NH-L9i low profile is only 37mm high in total height including fan. It is compatible with AM4 socket so it would be enough to cool your Ryzen 2700. You could even overclock that CPU with this cooler because Noctua coolers are very powerful and I had the intel version on my i5 4690k (not overclocked) and it was fine. Question though if you are having a case that can accommodate a power supply why only have one where the GPU only draws power from the motherboard? You can get a Corsair SFX 600 watt PSU that is very small. Or you could go with the HDplex 400 watt PSU which is an AC-ATX power supply. It comes with all the necessary cables and relies on an external power brick like a Dell 330 watt laptop charger. However, Hdplex have released a 400 watt DC-DC power supply that you can connect to their low profile PSU. Or you could get a flex power supply which is internal but slightly more expensive then SFX.

This cheap kit of screws, standoffs, and washers has all the necessary screws and standoffs for most cases: https://www.amazon.com/ASIV-Standoffs-Assortment-Motherboard-Assembling/dp/B076Z7R2TC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=motherboard+screw+kit+pc+case&qid=1550615403&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1 and is under $10. Yes metal parts can touch the power supply because all good quality power supplies are grounded within themselves to the electrical wire that goes to the wall so you won't get a shock or short your system. You don't need WiFi antennas if you plan to use Ethernet from your home router. If not you can easily find a generic USB-WiFi adapter that plugs into a USB slot and most are very low profile nowadays meaning it would be completely hidden. I take you plan to use a riser cable to make the GPU flat or are you using a low profile GPU so the case is shorter?

My only advice is to make lots of airholes for your case. To save drilling the wood you can use a jig saw or electric saw to cut out a round or square hole big enough to fit a 120mm computer case fan which are relatively cheap on Amazon or elsewhere. You can then drill holes for the fan screws or even mount the fan with double sided tape on the inside of the holes depending how big you cut the holes. Then you can add dust filters if you want to protect your fingers.

Hey all! So my friends and I have a LAN party every couple of months or so, and this was one of my major incentives for downsizing and going SFF. Well, downsizing made me realize that my bag game is shite. I was using my old LL bean backpack from elementary school (I'm 31 now) to hold the Sliger SM560, some wires, and my mouse and controller, and a separate bag for my mousepad, keyboard, and anything that didn't fit in the first backpack. This needed to change.

I did a lot of digging and purchased some bags that were not a great fit, then I stumbled upon this gem. Only 25 bucks, decently padded, and can fit my entire LAN getup in one bag. This thing is GREAT! I fit my tower, keyboard, mousepad, controller, and USB cables/dongles in the main chamber (there's little pockets for the USB stuff), and then my mouse, headset, power cables display cables, and ethernet in the front pouch. This thing ROCKS.

i do not have tempered glass panel.

Yes i travel with this one: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B071VG5N9D/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It fits very well, i set a carboard in the bottom to protect against the handle frame, wrap around 2 pair of jogging pants and bingo, its my carry-on. My monitor is S2417DG, fits perfectly in my pelican barrack box. Also, the original packagin is compact and relatively small in comparison to the huge ridiculous box that Asus sends.

Regarding your LM, i didnt hear you need to reapply every 6months. For the delid procedure, i've watched a GamersNexus video and followed step by step what he does. I don't think you ever do. Dmg? no, it would dmg aluminum, but your IHS is not made of Aluminum. You will apply the LM between the die and IHS it will surely stain, thats it.

If you already have an A9x14mm well, use it, otherwise a standard size NF-A9 fits in the rear of your case if you go for the NH-U9S.

On a side note, your quiet and quality setup will good only when you are home. Because when you will be sharing a room with a roomate, he is going to have one these shitty towers or a laptop that sounds like a jet engine.... like the one roomate i have atm. ;)

I purchased a "Nxtop Aluminum Heat Sink Heatsink Module Cooler Fin for High Power Led Amplifier Transistor Semiconductor Devices with 100mm (L) x 69mm(W) x 36mm(H)" heatsink that I going to cut down to fit, width is good, just a bit too long. Figure that along with a small fan either running from the SATA power or USB header would be more than plenty to max out any headroom I will have, silicone lottery permitting.

Torn as to drill and tap the holes or use thermal adhesive, both obviously in conjunction with thermal paste & pads. I figure given the size of the heat sink, and use of a fan to push pull over the fins using the case fan as help, I should be able to at least hit 900mhz?

The goal is to try to make a linux console like box out of the HP 8300 USDT for use in playing both some newer games at 720p/900p, and roms/older games hopefully at 1080p...

My original attempts to use a HP T620 Plus (2ghz quad core thinclient w/ an non-ryzen AMD APU) failed, as for what ever reason the one I purchased simply refuses to work properly when I use the PCIE 4x slot for a better GPU and crashes/bootloops when video acceleration is called upon (doesn't matter the GPU installed, nor power supply I used).

overclockers uk has a few lian-li ones example: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lian-li-pw-in11av65ato-usb3.0-i-o-panel-ca-480-ll.html (right angle)

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lian-li-pw-in11ah65t0-i-o-panel-upgrade-ca-74x-ll.html (flat)

also if you check corsair's website im sure they sell a lot of the front IO as spares for their cases example:

https://www.corsair.com/uk/en/Categories/Products/Accessories-%7C-Parts/PC-Components/Cases/Crystal-Series%E2%84%A2-460X-RGB-I-O-Panel/p/CC-8900106 if you dont need the plastic parts around it you could easily just salvage the wire and circuitry

good luck :)

No, it has a 4pin CPU but it does have the 8pin GPU. Right now I only have the 4pin CPU connected to the board which hasn't been an issue, but that might explain why the R5 3600 is slightly underperforming in benches. Thanks for the reminder! I'll be getting this 4pin to 8pin adapter: https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Power-Extension-Cable-Motherboard/dp/B0725VRN3B/ref=sr_1_9?crid=3A02QMGW22Z5N&keywords=4pin+to+8pin+cpu+power+cable&qid=1574876377&sprefix=4pin+to+%2Caps%2C141&sr=8-9

For the GPU I looked all over for it, and found one on Ebay that I bought for $600 USD; Gigabyte Aorus Gaming Box RTX 2070. The enclosure box I'll likely sell separately as it'll support pretty much any GPU if you only use the internals. Fetches maybe about $150-200. https://www.ebay.com/itm/GIGABYTE-AORUS-GeForce-RTX-2070-GV-N2070IXEB-8GC-8GB-256-Bit-GDDR6-Gaming-Box/333403796181?epid=11031083053&hash=item4da06a32d5:g:dAoAAOSw3F5d050W So if you tabulate that, it's about 400-500 for the card, which is not so bad. It's extremely hard to find these days even the Retail version and I found them upwards of 700-1000 because of the lower volume. I even considered the 2060 Super, but that was about $600 new.

For the Scythe Kaze Hachi 80mm fans, I have found them on AliExpress. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000025852422.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.df7d49e7R290SU&algo_pvid=677c12ac-a015-40e1-a548-c9f87cdbfb93&algo_expid=677c12ac-a015-40e1-a548-c9f87cdbfb93-0&btsid=ee7cd2fd-cd8f-4e41-acd9-1ee4e1bc70fd&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_9,searchweb201603_55

50C on idle doesn't sound right. My 2200G is about 30C with stock cooler (about 1500rpm though). I would try to reapply paste.

PSU switch look like 10 minutes. And that mostly because it's hard to remove motherboard with everything attached.

  • Buy https://www.amazon.ca/40x10mm-Bearing-Premium-Cooling-NF-A4x10/dp/B009NQLT0M
  • Remove PSU. 2 bolts: one at the back, one on the side from the side where 2.5" drives are.
  • Open PSU. There are a couple of pretty obvious screws. Box opens like a lid.
  • Unscrew and yank stock fan out. Connector had glue on it, so I had to scrape it off.
  • Install Noctua fan. Route its cable with the rest of cables that come out from PSU.
  • Plug Noctua into your motherboard. Use included low-noise adapter cable for best results.

You could always put the io at the back, put a vinyl decal to cover the bottom (now front) and add some feet with a 90° PSU cable connector.

$10 for vinyl wrap or a cut to size sheet of acrylic and some double sided tape.... Or leave it is is lol

  • if it was me, I'd do a sheet of acrylic and cover the whole front of the case down to the table so you don't see the PSU cable sticking out of the bottom of the case from the front view... Keeps it cleaner looking

$10- Tall adhesive feet (could go shorter for cheaper, but you want them tall to fit the PSU extension)

$3 low profile PSU extension (these are lower profile than what you'll find on Amazon... I spent a few days looking lol) Other super low profile connectors can be found on taobao and purchased through super buy

So an additional ~$25 to make it work... But that's up to you if you want to go that route. :)

2700x w/Strix B450-I, Dom Plat RGB 3200mhz 2x8gb, Silverstone 700w Plat SFX-L w/swapped copper fan grill. If anyone wants to buy the PSU pm me haha, the stock fan grill from Silverstone is still mint, not to be confused with the grill that was painted. Im really trying to look for an SF600 with some custom cables or something, would die to have some PSlate cables or something before end of this month since I wont have time to wait for all of the processing time it takes for them. Have 20+ trades on r/hardwareswap but barely have time to even post anything nowadays. Still looking for a better shade of copper spray paint. If I had time I would have 100%%%%% powder coated instead of rattle-canning.

\^ Thats the PSU. I could do like $140 shipped with this thrown in from CO. Lmk!

> I don't want to go for non modular one or break the bank.

Just know that the "modular" flex PSUs are not what a PC Builder thinks of as a modular PSU. Typically, like the Seasonic 300SUG, there is One big plug that has all the cables coming from it (including ones you will not use molex/floppy/sata power). This is because they are designed for 1U servers and the Modularity makes replacing them in a server a lot easier. Has nothing to do with flexibility of choosing which cables to use and not use. Check the Customer photo reviews. So just be mindful at the details of the "modularity" it provides

The FSP 400w is a well regarded, all around decent option for quality. Has 4+4pin for CPU , 6+2 pin for GPU.

The one you listed seems to be a modded modular flex psu, this IS the modular type that PC builders like with having option for cables to use. Not sure on the quality. As from the photos it looks to be a Delta Flex ATX Psu that was modded (You can see the Delta Logo)

Only change I would make, component wise, is memory at or above 3000mhz and perhaps 16gbs. Ryzen likes higher Mhz and you will see small performance bump.

Here area few videos for the Node 202 that can help walk you through the build.

Also keep in mind the L9i is made for intel cpus and requires a separate AM4 bracket.

u/techphyre · 2 pointsr/sffpc

Yes, but Noctua sells a mounting kit separately to use it with AM4.

They will send you one for free if you request on the website - but the page was down after the chromax.Black launch, so i just bought it with the cooler on Amazon.

Is there any particular reason you decided to give them the NCASE M1 you purchased for yourself? If your parents really don't have any need for a powerful system and you want to build yourself something down the line I wouldn't give them the ncase.

While it is a nice case, it won't suite their needs any more than a prebuilt that costs around the same amount, and support will fall on you instead of the company that makes a pre-built.

If you really want to built it yourself you can also go with an in-win chopin which comes with a PSU and costs about as much as the SF450 you have in your build.

Also, chrome and office can have pretty decent computational requirements depending what they do within them - but I'm assuming they have a standard 'home' workload and aren't doing any crazy excel computations or anything to tax even a low-grade system.

That said, IF you give them what you've already purchased at the VERY least I'd buy a cheaper Sata SSD for them and keep the NVME for your future build - that is a pricey drive and I very highly doubt they will notice the difference between that and something that costs a quarter as much. Also, the MoBo you have listed won't fit in the NCASE, cheapest itx am4 boards I think are closer to 120, so that's going to add additional cost to your plan.

edit: for $100 more than you still have to spend you can go with a well-known brand and include an optical drive, and still have a smaller package for them with similar specs. Biggest difference is SSD capacity.

this is the fan

https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-Cooling-Blades-Bearing-NF-A4x10/dp/B009NQLT0M

the fan comes with crimps so you can cut the existing fan in the psu and crimp all 3 cables with the noctua fan.

It's a Mitac PH12SI-D. I had originally ordered a PH12SI-I, but it had a different power connector.

The PSU I use is an external 120W brick one that came with my Silverstone Thin-mini ITX case.

The board that was originally in this system was a Asus H110T/CSM, which was a nice board, but it has a Realtek NIC, which is complete garbage, as the secondary NIC. It didn't have a PCI Express slot, but it did have dual M.2 slots.

I don't know anything about Hackintosh or Apple.

u/humanoiddoc · 1 pointr/sffpc

I'm using a similar one myself. And please read carefully - you have to buy the external power supply separately.

For US folks, silverstone makes a similar case with 120W DC-DC board as well:

u/whatiseas · 1 pointr/sffpc

Oops! I didn't realize that, I only say the 25mm. That's why I asked this question lol. Should I rather get these similar metal feet or would you recommend these rubber feet? Maybe these feet instead?

u/yyjiang · 1 pointr/sffpc

Agreed.

Since you have two 2.5 SSDs, you can mount them on a pcie bracket (https://smile.amazon.com/Kingwin-Mounting-Internal-Included-Installation/dp/B00IB6I43K/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=pci+slot+drive+mount&qid=1573766878&sr=8-7), then add a HDD at the bottom (2.5) or top (3.5) for your media.

I bought these and just sorta super glued them to the bottom: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B075KZBR2Y?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd

I have a Cougar QBX Kaze, with an Aorus 1080ti, with no fans underneath and I usually don't go above 70c.

I want to say this is probably it.

At least it looks like it but with the fugly grey interior.

this is one of those cases that ive been thinking about leveraging to get into the world of sffpc's. (that and im waiting for that new ncase store to open...)

UK bag, This is the one I got

US bag, You can get this one if you're in the US, creds to u/Nugmast3r for finding it

You might consider the cheaper inwin 656, people don't like the stand it comes with, but the case is the same and you can add an ODD if that's your thing.
