So we actually got one of the blower/dryers on amazon that isn’t too bad for the price. We just used it a few days ago on both pups and my girl did surprisingly well with it considering it was our first time. That being said, we did stop when she started getting stressed but she seemed to like it on her chest, which became super fluffy. The only negative was the heat took forever to warm up but I guess that’s fine as she probably wouldn’t enjoy hot air on her. Should also mention she’s not as fluffy as yours but she is long haired. As for getting the rest of her dried, we just let the fans blow on her from a distance as well as pat down with a towel anywhere that was still wet. Hoping she’ll be more comfortable with the dryer soon.

As for baths, it’s usually a two person job for both of ours. We did start using peanut butter or kong fillers as a reward for them and a distraction. This has worked better with our guy who’s 8 months while our girl seems to prefer to get it done quickly and being told she’s a good girl with some kisses.

Brushing is definitely easier when they are dry or almost dry. With my girl, it’s like brushing her fur wet is like brushing a barbies hair wet: tedious and annoying and she doesn’t like it. We use both the undercoat rake and just a regular ol’ brush for her.

Dryer
That is the dryer we’ve bought and it’s worked for us so far. Oh we’ve also had to plug it to a surge protector and not directly to the wall outlet because otherwise it made a almost squealing noise when the nozzle was near the dryer. Other than that, it works fine.

Sora is the only husky I've owned so far (although I have to keep myself from not having a dozen or two) so his situation may or may not be the norm, but twice a year he will shed his undercoat (happens to all Huskies but I'm not sure on the frequency) which typically lasts 6-8 weeks in his case. During this time you can pluck patches of wooly hair from his coat since they get dislodged from the skin; with regular brushing you can keep the runaway hair in check - a light brushing every day and a couple passes of something like the Furminator once a week should help.

I've found that the best thing to help remove the dislodged hair is to actually use a flea comb - it gets the hair right out, but not all sections of the undercoat decide to go at the same time.

Outside of this period he sheds mildly, so I use a Furminator and one of these and I think they work well. Depends on the length of your dog's hair, but since mine has medium hair both of these work.

These guys just never stop shedding though, and they have a LOT of hair. It's just something you learn to live with, but some folks can't stand the mess they naturally make. Having a Husky and being a neat freak don't go well together :)

Edit: Like said below, you never want to shave these guys when the concern is for their heat tolerance. Their coat protects them from extreme cold but also from extreme heat, and their skins are very sensitive to the sunlight. I does them more harm than good to shave them.

Lol yes, I have one of those Houdini Huskies! I recommend the ruffwear web master harness. We've been using it for almost two months now and my husky hasn't been able to slip out of it. It's a bit expensive but it's an investment I definitely don't regret. Now I feel 100% confident that my dog is safe and I can maintain control in situations where he gets too excited and would normally escape other harnesses we've tried.

If your dog can also slip out of collars, then I recommend using a martingale (limited slip collar) when you're not using a harness.

I've been biking with my husky for 2 summers now. A few weeks ago we biked 8 miles together with a friend. We had to work on heel a lot for normal walking, so as long as yours knows heel, you're good.

I didn't waste money on an expensive attachment, or a harness. For some reason he doesn't like harnesses. For $6 you can get this:

http://www.amazon.com/Buddy-connector-biking-jogging-walking/dp/B006CVAW7C/

I just attach that below the seat, and loop a normal leash around the post a few times, hook it up to the carabiner. Done. He rides along side of me, with a ton of encouragement. If I need to stop him, I can just grab the leash and hold him back, but normally he stays in pace with me and the bike.

If you've got any questions let me know! I'd love to help. Best $6 we've ever spent on this dog.

Hi, CaptainAre! Quality grooming tools make all the difference. I personally took other peoples' advice and use a FURminator during shedding season. It works great and gets the job done relatively quickly, is very efficient, and leaves my Husky with a soft top coat. Other people also swear by the Oster Rake, but I have yet to try it. I've owned a shedding blade in the past and used to use it on my other dogs, however I've noticed that while it might work on other breeds with thinner coats, it's not necessarily the best tool to use on a Husky. Will it work? Yes, but it's the equivalent to hammering a nail in with a wrench. Quality grooming tools are worth their weight in gold, especially with a Husky's thick undercoat.

Also, from my understanding, all brushes/blades/rakes were designed to be used along the grain of the fur and not against it. The best comparison I could think of would be shaving a beard. Sure, you could get a closer shave if you go against the hairs but it comes at the price of mild discomfort. Same thing goes for a dog's coat.

Another invaluable tool for daily maintenance and upkeep of her coat would be a decent Slicker Brush. Hope this helps!

We had the same problems with Zeta when she was younger, and she can still get stubborn and pull when she doesn't want to go back. The way I normally combat her impulses is to distract her with either treats, or start pointing out phantom squirrels or deer. I elevate my voice and get her excited by saying "Look over there," and point back home. (Yes, I might look crazy to passers by, but at least it motivates her to move with me.)

Going different ways is a great way to break the routine and trick them into going back home without them noticing.

If your husky pulls, then you should do sit-stays with them until they stop pulling. Also, you might want to consider a training collar for them. We use this one: http://www.amazon.com/StarMark-Training-Collar-Large-Blue/dp/B000A6BD5K and it works great. It's not meant to choke or hurt them, just a gentle pinch that gets their attention.

I hope that helps!

We got a WalkyDog and it works great:
http://www.amazon.com/WalkyDog-Bicycle-Exerciser-Leash-Hands/dp/B003OYIAW4

Keeps the center of gravity low so that they can't affect the bike travel as easily. It's just long enough to keep them away from moving bits but has enough play for some side to side.

Our huskies love them. Half the time I can just sit back and they will do most of the work :) Once they get into a run the are fairly oblivious to anything not directly in front of them. Had a rabbit jump out to the side once and I started prepping for trouble but we just ran right past.

find a couple vacuum repair shops look for an old school one like this they normally are about mid priced but last a lifetime and are easy maintenance . I have had a dyson and a the high end one walmart sells but nothing compared to this. as a bonus our rugs look amazing

u/FueledByBacon · 4 pointsr/siberianhusky

I find that a fur rake works better and is cheaper, I've used them on Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and Huskies to great success.

a Kong or an activity ball filled with treats to keep him busy so he doesn't notice you leave, just try giving it to him and then just go outside and wait, see if he starts howling, otherwise you can try pheromone sprays, it's these sprays that have the same pheromones that their mothers have and it makes puppies feel safer and more comfortable.

We have gone through a number of harnesses, collars, and leashes with our two huskies.

There are several good no-pull harnesses out there. I tend to favor a rope slip leash, in general, placed high on the neck just behind the jaw.

Having said that, lately we have had great results with the Thunderleash for our more obsessive female husky. We also have one for our larger male husky, but he is not a problem puller like our female. We have used this for over six months, and this is great for controlling her. She responded well to this leash on her first wearing, but your mileage may vary. We have since recommended this to several people with hard pullers.

u/TrackOne · 1 pointr/siberianhusky

I would recommend the Easy walk or Gentle leader harnesses for the pulling if it becomes a problem. Some huskies just don't seem to want to take to the "heel" command. Outside of that, I personally haven't found a need for any special collars for my husky.

At least in my experience, praise and treats are enough to make grooming painless.

Thank you!! :) they are from Amazon. Here’s the link to the doggles! They fit her well and she doesn’t completely hate wearing them!

I’ve heard mixed reviews about the FURminator when it came to huskies. I’ve bought this one for my husky and it works really well.

One comb for taking out knots and the other is a needle type comb with one side thicker and thinner on the other end

Grooming kit

Don’t bother with the fur gloves.. total waste of money and time lol.

In regards to your husky puppy stopping, maybe try some higher value treats to get him to come such as turkey deli meat, they definitely get tired of the same treats.

Good luck!

I got this particular toy at petsmart, it is their generic brand toy. From what I have heard about these toys, they do not last very long at all. So I am not sure if I would recommend getting one. So far I have found that "Plubber" toys hold up pretty well.

I bought this for my husky pup. Took a thin black blanket and cut it to size to fit over the sides and front door, added some Velcro straps to roll them up and keep them up. I keep her kennel beside my bed and use it as my bedside table. Cheza quit whining at night once she figured out I was right beside her. Easily one of the best purchases I've made.

u/Sogeking99 · 1 pointr/siberianhusky

Thanks I will start doing this immediately. I found this bowl on amazon.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003VPG0Y6/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=pet-supplies

I'm sure I can nip this in the bud.

u/lukmann18 · 5 pointsr/siberianhusky

Get him brushed by a professional to get his coat looking perfect and then you can do it yourself to maintain it. Just be sure to let the groomer know that he/she shouldn’t trim or shave any of his fur. You’d be surprised at how many groomers don’t know how to groom double coated dogs.

Edit: Here’s a list of all the tools I use to groom my pup.

  1. Slicker Brush

  2. Metal Comb

  3. Undercoat Rake

  4. Another Brush

  5. High Velocity Blower (for when he blows his coat)

Edit #2: Was going through my amazon purchase history to see if I could suggest any other grooming products and came across the furminator purchase I made. Never buy one of those things, regardless of how highly rated it is on amazon. It cuts through your dogs coat instead of removing the loose fur. Stick to the rake I linked above.
