They aren't dumb questions. Yes, with two car kits and a home kit it would be extremely easy to switch between car, truck and dorm. I'm not sure if this is still the same, but the dorm could be a bigger issue. Back in the older days, the home kits needed the antenna to have a good line of sight with the satellite and with my XM radios, I sometimes had to have the antenna outside. The dorm probably wouldn't allow that.
But one thing to consider is what I do now. I do everything through my phone and either the car's bluetooth. I have an older car and use one of these bluetooth FM transmitters. It sounds good. And if you already have an account the online is pretty cheap.
The data costs could be cheaper than a radio, two car kits and a home kit.
There are so many options! A simple visit to bestbuy or similar store will reveal all the different radios available.
I find though, for home use anyways, sometimes a dedicated xm radio isn't even the way to go. For 1, the subs are somewhat expensive.
With the online streaming sxm accounts, this opens up a whole new world of sxm. Most, if not almost all, networked radios (or internet radios) now have support for xm streaming where you just enter your credentials. Something such as the old logitech squeezebox.
Here is an example:

These online radios support more than just xm, so if there are local sports, or spotify, or other stuff he wants to listen to without actually having an xm sub he can do that as well.
Just an idea!
Hard to know. Are you using a standalone tuner or one built into your car's stereo (if it's the latter, is it a factory radio or one you bought aftermarket?)
If it's an aftermarket radio or a standalone tuner, you could possibly try repositioning the existing antenna to see if you get a better signal. Also, my experience has been the Sirius flat disc antennas work better on the roof of a car and the XM bump antennas work better on the trunk.
Could also be your radio. Sirius didn't work well for me in California — the signal would often drop out — but XM was pretty consistent with the Sirius antenna.
Here is a link to the exact cable I bought

Just substitute the power bank you see for an appropriate speaker and use double sided tape to secure it.
