What you need to get started playing Melee:

1. A Nintendo Wii (in case you ever become interested in Project M) available for about $40+ various places on the internet. Try to get the white one as some of the black models does not have slots for Gamecube controllers. Make sure the Wii has the sensor bar, power cables, AV cables, at least 1 wiimote. You also need a Gamecube Memory card so you can save the game. Alternatively if Wii isn't your thing you could purchase a Gamecube bundle like this.
   
   
2. A Wired Official Nintendo Gamecube Controller (negates wireless interference at large tournaments) available from anywhere from about $10+ Used on eBay to about $40 new on Amazon. Let me stress again OFFICIAL Nintendo controller, third parties are generally shoddy and not worth the investment regardless of their price.
   
   
3. A copy of Super Smash Bros Melee, price normally fluctuates from $30-$60 depending on site and demand.
   
   
4. A CRT television. The big ol' chunky ones. These are the only kinds of TV that do not have input delay for Melee. You can find them for free on craigslist or can buy one at a garage sale or thrift store for $5-10 dollars. Make sure it has AV hookups and a remote or a built in button to switch the inputs. Remember to lift with your legs or get a friend to help cause they can be heavy (my main one is 42" and 300lbs).
   
   
5. A Smashboards Account. Everything Smash related can be found there. Character discussions, tourny info, ect...
   
   Extra suggestions:
   
   

• Find human opponents in your area ASAP. You'll probably lose and lose badly but you learn infinitely more than playing against CPUs. Finding good players who are willing to show you the ropes is key.

• Once you get a feel for all the characters choose the one you like best and stick to them as this will help you improve faster. This is the most current Melee tier list, which is basically a power ranking of characters. That said, do not take it too seriously, anyone in S or A tier is generally viable and even those below it are feasible if you put in the time and effort (just look to this subreddit's hero aMSa who consistently puts up amazing results with Yoshi)
  
  
• If you're not having fun you're probably not playing right.
  
  
• I strongly recommend watching The Smash Bros documentary it was created and funded by the community and gives a really in depth look into the history of competitive Melee.
  
  
• If you want to play Project M (the second most popular Smash game currently) you need a copy of SSB Brawl, a 2gb SD Card, and the hackless edition PM files.

Yeah no shit. And 2ms is nothing dude. You gain widescreen with progressive output. And it does matter if you could use a working 144hz display because you have to take in account frame transmission.

For every 60hz display, you'll have 16.67ms frame transmission to display that frame. If you have a 144hz display, you will have only 7ms of frame transmission. So even if you add the lag of 2ms from input processing, it's still less than 10ms overall to display each full frame. By the way, CRTs do have input lag and it's not 0ms. The input lag from a CRT is like 670 nanoseconds or 0.00067ms (which is super negligible, but it's worth mentioning for sake of discussion).

How do you think other games are played dude? You think everyone uses a CRT? No, because 2ms is negligible - especially considering the GameCube's native send rate is 6ms. Obviously, for 60hz displays, CRT is the best for input lag, but 2ms is not going to matter. Human reaction time averages around 200ms. And there is not usually scenarios that come up that rely on a direct reaction. Even with a powershield, you're visually watching the projectile coming at you and can time when you're going to press the button.

The future will probably be on Dolphin with 144hz displays with adapters that have 1ms refresh rate/polling rates. It's possible there to have full RGB 4:4:4 widescreen progressive output with the ability to scale to HD resolutions with anti-aliasing. If the way the Raphnet adapter syncs it's polling rate to it's refresh/send rate holds true, then it's possible to have 1ms of adapter lag only instead of 6ms if you overclock your USB ports polling rate to 1000hz. That already beats a GameCube + CRT (22.67ms vs 9.95ms). Now if you take into account the graphics cards getting better and better, the GPU time will diminish as well. Also Dolphin efficiency will keep improving as well.

But that's all theoretical. Right now, the best way to play IMO (if you make considerations for progressive and widescreen output), is to get a Wii with GameCube inputs, a Sewell Wii to HDMI Converter, and a BenQ Gaming Monitor with Nintendont and the 20XX pack. If you only care about Input Lag, yeah "technically" a CRT + GameCube/Wii is better by 2ms because 144hz displays aren't working correctly with consoles. So like I said, for 60hz displays, CRTs win by a very negligible amount but you give up having progressive widescreen output. And yes I know they have made a few progressive 16:9 CRTs but they are extremely rare and it's not full RGB 4:4:4 (HDMI > VGA or Component).

Overall, my point is that Melee HD with a Gaming Monitor is completely competitively viable and you claimed above "display lag is a downside" - as if it is not a viable option. The problem isn't the 2ms of display lag - the problem was the adapters/converters. Before the Wii, to convert 480p progressive component analog, it took too much time. Like over a frame in a lot of cases. It just so happened that with the Wii, people were able to create an HDMI output. Nearly all communities stopped using CRTs a long time ago. (Although Speedrunners use CRTs for the same issue. Because it's more cost effective and consoles don't support 144hz output). But again, how do you think other gamers (who aren't limited from old-analog-only-consoles) are playing?

I actually have gone through three.

first I got the dreamgear and holding that one worked really well but i didn't like the material so much and it kept slipping off parts of the 3ds. plus it's also geared towards protection which I'm not too worried about so I returned that one

then I tried the cyber one which honestly felt the best overall to hold. I have pretty big hands and it just fit perfectly like an actual controller. But, for me at least the shoulder buttons were really hard to get to. The way my hands fit onto it, my fingers didn't rest on the shoulder buttons naturally, and trying to move them in the heat of the moment wasn't really working out.

so I returned that one, and picked up this one. I actually just got it today so I haven't gotten to try it out yet, but I've heard good things about it, and it seems like the best of both so here's hoping

Both the pro controller have their strength as weaknesses, so it really depends on what you value more

  Like I said, both controllers feel amazing to use and are comfortable in your hands, so it all comes down to your own preference.
  
  A lot of the GameCube controller's problems (like needing a wired connection and the lack of buttons) can be solved by buying third party controllers. I know PowerA has a wireless GameCube controller with all the extra buttons and features coming out soon. It is important to note that third party GameCube controllers have a history of bring poorly made and breaking after a few weeks. Hori also has a portable stand for the Switch with a bunch of usb docks that you could use (I don't know how to put links into text because I don't really use Reddit that much so I'll link it below). I would be careful if you're going to use it because third party docks can brick your Switch.

ON PC

Note: You will need a fairly good computer to run SSBM or SSBB on your computer unless you play on a tiny window size with no audio.

Things needed:

This is the emulator you will use to run SSBB and SSBM. Just download the latest version and install it

Controller: Official GC controller and the GC to compter USB adapter

The controller is a bit expensive, but going for a non-official controller is just awful. You can also use an xbox controller, but since you're playing SSB it won't be optimal.

ISOs: I am pretty sure I'm not allowed to link them, but in order to actually play the game you need to search for the "Super Smash Brothers Melee ISO" or "Super Smash Brothers Brawl ISO" and download the ISO for the one(s) you want.


After you have all these components, you can almost start playing:

• Plug in your GC controller to your computer via your Mayflash adapter
  
  
• Open the Dolphin emulator
  
  
• Click the "GCPad" button on the top grey bar you see. It has a GC controller icon
  
  
• Click the dropdown arrow under "Device" and select your GC controller. If it's not detected, hit the "Refresh" button beside the arrow or start over from step 1 mentioned above. If it still can't be detected, ask on Google. For me, the GC controller is called "SDL/0/USB GamePad" but it might be different for you (I don't actually know if it will be different. Never asked anyone else).
  
  
• After configuring your controller, click the "Browse" button on the same grey bar. It is the 3rd icon and looks like a series of black bars. Search for the folder(s) your ISO(s) and select the folder(s). Now the game(s) should come up on the main menu of the Dolphin Emulator. If they don't, hit refresh or try selecting the correct folder again.
  
  
• Finally, double click the game you want to play and enjoy!
  

Umm to be honest your probably fine with the one you have. The reason I recommended the one there is because I have the 100MBPS UGREEN one and it works great and have had no issues. Even things as far as having the Ethernet cable stay securely into the adapter on these is nice which I have had one other where that was an issue. But yeah I imagine the Nintendo ones are great so you should be good with that!

EDIT: Nevermind someone mentioned before that there is a specific chipset for Ethernet adapters that is best for the Switch so if you don't have it might be best to upgrade. Purists will hate this suggestion (and the controller is far from perfect) but the PowerA Wireless GameCube Controller is the best third party controller I have used. Better than the Hori Battlepad and WAY better than the PDP Fight Pad Pro.

NB: You’re never going to get the same quality or feel of a first party controller going this route and you will definitely be more prone to dropped inputs, etc. But especially if you’re looking for a casual option that delivers a decent wireless experience with the GameCube form factor (plus home and share buttons) IMO, this is the best option.

Honestly, I was in the same boat. Great memories with Smash and my college roommates. Got online to hang out with them when we have time. As long as you don't take every hit seriously and enjoy it for the game, its alright. I use to get mad at the input lag and buttons not working, but I changed to basically play with my friends online (also get a Lan Adapter and tell your friends to as well) and you will have a lot of fun. You might even find another game you guys like to play as well, for us it's Mario Kart, don't drink and drive.

I've absolutely found melee to be a much more rewarding experience than any of the other games in the series. The 3rd party online through smashladder is ironically much better than online for any of the other games. As others have said, it's cheaper and more useful to get Faster Melee and a Mayflash adapter rather than getting a gamecube. This will allow you to play online. Check out SSBM Tutorials to learn more of the basics and figure out what character to play. Good luck, I hope you end up picking up the game. This is an amazing starter grip. The rubber coating is amazing and the texture is awesome, it's also very secure. My only complaint was the first time I held this, I held it like a controller, so both my index fingers were on the shoulder rests thinking I was pressing L or R buttons. To prevent from confusing myself, I put my middle finger onto the rest and my index finger onto the actual L button (i did not do this for my right hand) and thats how I would hold it. If you require a Gamecube controller soon, and do not already have an adapter, I highly recommend the HORI HORI Battle Pad Turbo. It includes a turbo function, ZL and ZR buttons, as well has a Home button and -/+ buttons. The triggers are different from the regular one, but they are still great. It feels the exact same to hold as a regular GCC. They instead hook up to a Wiimote, and are wireless through that. I almost never tell people to buy third party controllers, but for this scenario, I think they are very amazing for only $25.

They are not hard to find at retailers, but for online they appear to be the second best thing, so get them quick, they are running out fast.

Awesome! Like everyone else said, to play on console, you need:

• CRT TV (cheap, pretty easy to find; HD tv's have some display lag)
  
• Official GameCube controller (the new white or black ones are great; don't buy 3rd party, they feel cheap and won't last long)
  
• First-generation Wii w/ sensor bar and wiimote (only early ones have GameCube ports/compatibility)
  
• Melee disc, and Brawl disc for PM
  
• 2GB SD card for PM. A larger one will work if you're willing to mod your Wii.
  
  You can also emulate both games on Dolphin and play online with other people at Smash Ladder, as long as you have ISOs for the games and a GC controller->USB adapter. Adapters aren't very expensive (~$15) and netplay is a very good way of practicing with people if you don't have anyone around you.

Since the adapter thing's been gone over, I'll talk about the controllers.

You basically have 3 choices with Gamecube controllers. You can either get a used one online via Craigslist or eBay or whatever (somewhat less reliable due to unknown wear on the controller, etc.), get a unofficial Gamecube controller (these will come in at around 8ish dollars on the lower side, and around 15ish dollars on the higher side, but they're all the same quality - crappy and really only good for super casual play, aka having friends that just fool around and come over once in a while).

The best option is obviously to get new official Nintendo Gamecube controllers, but they're quite a bit pricier. Nintendo Japan still makes white ones (and they have a longer cable than the older controllers we have too!) but they come pricey, at about 40 - 50 dollars since they have to come from Japan. Here is a link of the Amazon product, although I've definitely seen the price drop before. Either that or I was really tired, but yeah.

Other than those options I haven't really found any better ones, so good luck in your searching!

If you're playing Smash only, I would recommend buying the new Nintendo controller. They're literally just GameCube controllers. Solid, reliable, and made first party by Nintendo brand new. They work with the original GameCube and the new controller adapter for WiiU. I have a set of 4 of these myself and they've worked great. It also doesn't matter which color you get or if you get the US or Japanese versions. It all works the same. The only difference is the language on the box and on the back sticker.

I'm not sure how much longer they'll be manufacturing them considering DLC support for Smash 4 just ended, so I'd get a few of them now while they're cheap. Good luck!

Well it is true that most 3rd party adapters suck, but specifically the Mayflash 4 Port is really good. It was pretty much the standard like 4 years ago when official adapters were out of stock for months. I mean just look at the amazon reviews. It has almost 2 thousand reviews, at 4.5 stars. Trust me, it's more than legit.

Technically yes but the best ones to get are the USB 3.0 Adapters. If you look on the inside of your Switch Dock you will notice one of the two USB Ports is Blue. The blue indicates USB 3.0. Here’s a link to the exact one I have. I’ve had it for about 6 months and it works wonderfully. There are a few other 3.0’s to choose from that I’m sure all work just as well.

It's pretty poor quality, I hear there are better 1s but it is rubbery and soft and fits in my hand so it works good for me. : )

They will come out there. It is released world wide, there are just far more people who want them then adapters. And like i said, this this should work, I just haven't personally tested it.The game will see it as a classic controller but the game supports classic controllers. This Should work too. Its not really a gamecube controller, but should feel like one.
Or you could play the game with a great Pro controller, or gamepad. The game cube controller isn't the only way to do it.

About the Best Buy Smash Fest, I really hope more info comes about this soon!! I am dying to see if this is available in my location!

Also, there is only one major expectation for this event that I will have: Gamecube Controllers. There MUST be Gamecube Controllers, and not just Wii Motes with nun chucks. I won't be expecting to see every character on the roster unlocked or anything, I simply hope that if I do get the chance to play this game in advance, I do so with the Gamecube controller (or at least a Wii Classic controller).

I would suggest getting a Wii. Not all models are backwards-compatible so make sure you get on that is. Here is a list of different Wii models, though I'm not sure if it'll help. Which game you want to play is completely up to you. Having a Wii gives you access to all of the games except 3DS/Wii U. I can't say for sure that this is the best option since I have no experience with emulating.

You probably want to use a Gamecube controller. A good controller either has "Nintendo Gamecube" written on it or has the Smash 4 logo on it. If you can find them in a local game or electronics store, great. If not I'd suggest amazon.

The adapter exists.

The Switch dock exists and has 3 USB ports. All the game needs to do is respond to input from the adapter. It works on Android, Windows, Linux, Mac and Wii U (OS?). I'm pretty sure they can add it into a new Smash or a port without any issue.

And why? Because the fans use GC controllers and they've kept supporting it for 3 generations now. They're still making and selling SSB-branded GC Controllers.

Also, how have you been waiting since Brawl came out? There is a better Smash after Brawl, with a different engine/physics. Even for an entirely new one, people would want GC support. I don't/won't feel like buying 3 more Pro Controllers, when me and my friends all have SSB brand GC controllers.

Honestly you'd be in the best position to know whether or not he wanted one. All an amiibo is is a figurine that learns and emulates play habits. Would he really be into something like that? Or just ask him passingly like "hey i keep hearing the term amiibo whats that?" and try to get info that way.

The classic safest bet would always be, and always has been, a new gamecube controller. make note that it must be an official nintendo made controller, or he most likely will not use it.

My Wii itself cost me 60$ and is probably the most expensive piece. You can buy new GC controllers for under 30$ on amazon, you could probably find much cheaper used ones. I'm not really sure about the game. The SD cards are probably about 5$ although seem to vary alot from 1-10$.

I think $60 is a pretty low estimate, about 100$ seems more realistic but most of the items prices vary alot from place to place so it may be possible. Also alot of people are recommending a Gamecube to play melee. This option would be cheaper but if you want to play melee you can buy a wii and melee so you have the option to switch between PM and melee. Also if you don't have a CRT TV i would recommend getting one but they can usually be found free.

I had a HUGE problem with the shape of the 3DS, too. While this doesn't make it QUITE as awesome as using a controller, a good grip will effectively do away with the hand cramps. This is the one I got, in case you're interested.

I'd imagine it'll be the same as the ones they're currently selling on Amazon(here). I got one of these and it does feel a little bit different, at least in the joystick(Feels a bit more rigid and solid) but overall it still feels great. It also has a longer cable. Would recommend. I'm actually glad we're getting the black controllers since I already have a white one.

as far as hardware goes, if you have a desktop with a free PCI-e slot and youre comfortable with putting parts into it get a Aver Media Live Gamer HD. If that's not the case go with an El Gato Game Capture HD. Be warned that the El Gato has a small delay on the stream's end (it won't affect you playing), so you'll have to compensate with the streaming software.

We already have a lagless way to play melee on monitors. The problem is melee players are pretty particular about lag and decent monitors are expensive. It saves a ton of space but 1k+ is a lot of money if you want to have like 10 setups.

One of the reasons melee is so uniquely successful at a local level is because setups are cheap as fuck so you have people like me who can buy 4-5 full setups for the price of 1 monitor or console and can host a tourney anywhere or make sure there's always enough setups for friendlies.

That said a melee re release would still being melee to a new audience, hopefully it just isn't laggy.

Do NOT go off brand. First party controllers are the way to go for Gamecube. Heads up, the Amazon Basics USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter has the AX88179 chipset and is confirmed to work perfectly on the Switch. It's a simply plug-and-play installation.
Just make sure you get the USB 3.0 version and not 2.0 and you're golden.

And FYI, the AX88179 chipset actually has a 2-3% failure rate in the first 6 months so no matter what brand you get, you have a small chance of it dying on you in the first year. So I recommend the Amazon Basics one simply because of their customer service. You know Amazon will gladly send you out a new one no questions asked with 2 day shipping if yours stops working. It's also the cheapest of the bunch as well so that's another plus.

I use the gamepad. I have large hands and it fits my playstyle with Yoshi. My hands just wrap around the big thing, and it feels comfortable. It's also quite easy for me to dash dash/perfect pivot dance with it too.

I reverse grab and shield on my back buttons, and change my Y to grab as well. I also have a Character arrangements, like Diddy/Swordsman/Projectile countersets.

When I'm not using the gamepad I use the Hori Battle Pad for Wii U. I like it and it is quite responsive.

You can play online on a Wii using Wiimmfi, thought not many people do that.

Sorta, yeah, but if you're just starting out it's not terribly important. Wavedashing is a fairly simple concept, so even if you can't do it right now you'll eventually get it down.

You should check out the list of regional Facebook groups.

As long as it's a Nintendo controller, and not third-party, it'll be fine. You can also get them online.

1. Melee is unplayable on the Wii U. Brawl will work fine, Wii U can play Wii games fine. I'm unsure on P:M, I think it can work but it's tricky to do so.

While you can play melee online with Dolphin, it can be a little laggy unless you are playing someone really close to you geographically. Smash is a game where 1 frame (1/60th of a second) can make all the difference in what happens. If you plan on playing the game competitively, then playing on a console with a CRT is the only way to go. (HDTVs have input lag, often greater than 1/60th of a second and can therefore cause you to get used to bad timings)

Also, you'll definitely want a 1st party gamecube controller, and amazon has brand new white ones for pretty cheap (relatively speaking) here. Unfortunately, colors other than white have been out of production for a long time, so finding one in good condition is a bit harder/more expensive.

As for online resources, ssbm tutorials has great videos detailing character specific tech (falco lasers, fox practice drills, marth chaingrab guide, etc.), universal tech (wavedashing, dashdancing, directional influence), and just general pieces of advice to newcomers.

I'd also recommend Uncle Punch training mode. This is a mod of melee's event mode designed to help practice universal tech such as L cancelling, smash di, or ledgedashing.

Editing is not really something a guide can teach in a set time. Good editing requires a mixture of both animating and timing which is mostly acquired through experience.


To get the footage, you would download them from the youtube video or twitch VoD. If you're recording your own, the best device for that is the Elgato.



I use Adobe After Effects CS5 for editing, but a lot of people may also prefer software like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premier. You can look up respective tutorials on how to use it (masking, keyframing, etc) and then you're on your way to start editing!

I have CYBER's 3DS LL grip. It feels good, looks good, and is really comfortable. It's easy to attach / detach and has a little compartment for two additional games. The only thing is blocks is the stylus compartment and that isn't really important anyway.

Unfortunately I can only find one that ships from Japan so you might have to wait a little longer than usual. I highly recommend it otherwise though.

The Mayflash and Raphnet Gamecube to Classic Controller adapter works, because it acts like a classic controller. THIS IS A DIFFERENT ADAPTER THAN THE OFFICIAL NINTENDO ONE AND THE MAYFLASH 4 PORT USB ONE. THIS ONE CONNECTS ONE CONTROLLER TO THE BOTTOM OF A WIIMOTE.

The LGP has a random blackout issue. You'll be playing and then all of a sudden, BAM, blackout for 1 or 2 seconds. It's very sensitive to voltage when being used with the Component input, so much so that even plugging in controllers can cause it to black out sometimes.

The Elgato Game Capture HD has been rumored to be just as fast as the LGP when it comes to conversion as well as will let you record, but Fizzi hasn't pulled any real numbers on it yet as far as I know.

With either of these options, you need the right monitor as well if you are going for a HD lagless setup. Both the BenQ RL2455HM and the Evo monitor are tried and true for our purposes, but many other gaming monitors could work depending on their quality.

3rd party ain't worth it bro. Brand new white controllers with 10ft cords are being sold on Amazon for 30.90, I would definitely recommend getting one unless you want to wait until sm4sh comes out and Nintendo starts selling new ones for 25-30 bucks anyway. Oh, and check garage sales and local retro gaming stores, some will have Nintendo brand controllers for as little as 10 bucks used. But seriously, don't waste your money on third party controllers, they have inferior hardware and break down easily.

Before sm4sh came out, the original white japanese controllers would go for about $30, and they're actually the best gamecube controllers you can buy (I have one and can attest to this), but now they go for up to $65, so get that one if you're willing to shell out some money, but want the best possible controller.

First party controllers are the only route you should be taking. For the memory card, you're probably fine. This is a great buy, and it'll last you well past the time 3 or 4 of the knock offs would last you.

I was in a similar situation to you -- beginner looking to get competitive in melee -- and I also had two ancient controllers that had seen a lot of love. For a while I was using one, getting by, but then I tried a friend's new controller. Dash dancing was so much easier and more fluid.

This is the one I got which came in last week. It's been working perfectly enough (at least for Mario Kart 8) that I probably wouldn't feel the need to buy the official one if given the chance.

Amazon typically has them for a pretty reasonable price, $28 right now, but not everyone likes the White ones because of preference issues (although a lot of fast, technical pros like Dr. PP use them).

I searched for these on AmazonUK (I assume you are not from North America) and was not able to find this controller which leads me to believe Nintendo has not officially announced the global availability of the GameCube adapter as well as the reissued controllers. As for North America, both the adapter and original model GameCube controller will be made available the day of Smash 4's release. I even have this here Bundle pre-ordered. Older model controllers circa 2001 will work with that adapter as well. Here is the listing for the stand-alone adapter.

Smash online is P2P based, so the most important reason for lag is latency between players and not central servers.

1. Avoid playing someone who is far from your location. Try going to smashboards and smashladder to find players near your location.
   
   
2. Get an ethernet adapter. Its literally ~12$ on amazon, here. I use the same one and it works great. It reduces your ping, and packet loss, and it doesn't have problems with interference which wifi signals do.
   
   A few more bucks to better your online gaming experience is totally worth it.

I was too late in pre-ordering the Smash controller bundle from Amazon and I saw this controller recently. The shoulder buttons probably don't click in the same way as the classic GC controller. But, since I have been playing sm4sh 3DS, I've gotten a bit used to grabbing with my left hand instead of my right hand. That extra Z button on the left is really appealing to me right now. $12 is hella worth the money even if you only see a slight improvement in some of your matches.

For best results, tell us how your gear is set up. How far is your Wii U from your router? What obstacles are between them? How many WiFi devices are being used nearby? What is your internet speed and what is the rest of your household doing on it?

Highly recommend buying on of these if you want a brand new controller. They're first party, and a good price for a new controller. The cable is longer than some of the older ones. For used, I would scout out local garage sales and of course, ebay.

Can you link to the one you're talking about? Because search results change. The one I see at the top right now has amazing reviews for Switch support and I don't see a review that says it doesn't work with it.

I personally use a mayflash adapter and it works great on the Switch for Ultimate and as a bonus you can use it on PC.

The GameCube controller adapter takes up two usb slots and can be plugged into the dock. You can't use GameCube controllers portably with the offical adapter. Personally I reccomend either getting the powerA wireless gamecube controller or the 8bitdo wireless adapter if you want to play portable and docked.

HORI USB Switch stand

This does not have the GCC-Adapter integrated, but it costs like half of the PG adapter. You can also charge your Switch through it and it has 4 USB ports. The only downside is, that you can't plug this stand directly into a tv, as it has no HDMI output. Most people have a GCC adapter anyway, so this one is a really good option and I already use one. Just play on your PC, it's super easy to use and theres virtually no input lag. Much more convenient because you can load up PM instantly rather than waiting forever on the Wii, plus you can play vs others online

I've been using this for a while. I personally find it a little annoying when you have to use the triggers, but it's much more comfortable to hold and a lot of people like it. It also blocks the stylus, but that shouldn't be a problem for Smash.

Are the newer Smash Bros. official controllers a different material than original Gamecube controllers? I ordered one from here and it feels like a matte material. The triggers and stuff feel stiff as well, but I was expecting that, as I'm used to a super broken in controller. Is it possible I bought a generic one even through that Amazon link?

Hey UK players, if you're okay with third party stuff, I'd recommend this if you don't want to wait. Doubt it's different from the US one, but I've been using this just fine on Wii U, and I don't see why it'd be any different on Switch (they even say it works on Switch so you could return it for free if it didn't work). It lets you plug the GC controller into a wiimote like a classic controller, so it will work for any game with classic controller support, like brawl.

Netplay is amazing now, and fairly easy to set up. Only thing you really need is a USB-GCC adapter which you can get for less than $20

You're probably better off salvaging the part from another controller.

Not original but it is an official gamecube controller plus it's brand new. i just got one and i love it.

I stand by using this adapter to play with my GCN controller. That's how I play MK8 and all of my virtual console games. Hoping that it works with Smash U.

Make sure you also purchase a LAN adapter. This is the one I use and it works pretty well.

I've used all manner of adapters at tournies, and I can't tell the difference. My own is a Kelux adapter, came in a generic purple box, and it's perfect. Better looking than Mayflash, at least. Cheaper too.

I've run into the same problem, I started using a Wii AV to HDMI converter to play on my LCD tv. It's supposed to have only 2 ms more lag than playing on a CRT. It makes a huge difference and and my technical game has improved a lot. It was worth every penny. This is the one I got but there's other brands also. Hope this helps.

I chose these powerA wireless controllers since I don't want to deal with cables. They have worked very well for months however if used extensively the control stick can start to drift. Also they don't contain rechargable batteries so you will have to change the batteries every two months or so.

Noticed that the amazon listing for the Smash GC Controller has changed to "currently unavailable" so would imagine things aren't looking the best in that regard

Melee is 15 years old and is currently growing faster than ever before. This isn't even a best case scenario for a video game; this is simply unprecedented.

Because of this and myriad other reasons, melee's community has become about *keeping kosher*, for lack of a better phrase. While new tech comes and goes as the meta changes, it's still been the exact same software played on the exact same hardware for 15 years. The most diversity I've ever seen at a tourney is a Gamecube disk being played on a Wii and that's about it. Even the new Smash-branded controllers that Nintendo released have been scrutinized for making shield drops easier, and this was Nintendo's best attempt at a replica of the original GC controller.

Please note that the official Nintendo Switch LAN uses the ASIX AX88179 chipset, which is basically the best one for the Switch to use and the one you should recommend. I would completely ignore the first LAN adapter you linked to, and primarily suggest the second one you linked to, or this one which is a few cents cheaper.

Worst controller some Mad Catz controller, the buttons would always get stuck in the controller, and a part of the handle fell off, but I'm not sure when or how. Also, the turbo function is basically useless unless you're using it for a game like Mario Party.

Best controller is the White Sm4sh Controller, feels incredible overall, and, if needed, the long cord can be useful sometimes, no downsides whatsoever.

Have heard only bad things about the 2 port, not sure if it actually has any issues but still probably best to avoid it. Get the 4 port instead. amazon link

Basically, there's an adapter (link to amazon here) that connects from your Wii Remote to your GameCube controller, and it essentially treats your GameCube controller like a Classic Controller.

The Smash 4 one has a longer cable, about a foot maybe more. For the cable itself you can get just about any Cat5E/Cat6 cable of the length you need and it should work fine.

This is what I have. It actually runs on two Double A batteries lol. So I guess it'd be easier to disconnect. Just open the back and take the batteries out!

$50 x 7 players = $350 dlls for 8-player smash (Didn't count the price of the gamepad, since IMO it's basically a big Pro Controller).

VS.

$30 x 8 + $20 = $260 for 8-player smash. (Assuming you buy brand new GC controllers, which is rarely the case, I think).

That's my case, at least. My friends and I hate playing with the Wiimotes, so Pro Controllers would be the way to go. As is, I have 1 faux Pro Controller, 1 gamepad, 4 Wiimotes, and a ton of GC controllers I can't use :(

Playing melee on Wii has no differences from on a real GameCube, so that should be fine. As for controllers, the best option is to get the new smash 4 branded controllers, authentic and from Nintendo.

They seem to be the most accurate reproduction of the original.

The PowerA Gamecube Controller is basically a Switch Pro Controller (minus rumble and Amiibo scanning) housed in the casing of a Gamecube controller. It's a very faithful recreation of the original, the only difference I've noticed is the addition of the extra buttons.

I know this might not be what you were hoping, but have you considered getting one of the pads in the GameCube layout?

It's like PDP's pads that are GameCube layout, but has digital buttons for the Triggers (L & R) and the Shoulder buttons (ZL & ZR) are similar to a PlayStation's R1 and L1 (Soft press and not hard click).

I ordered both the Mario and Luigi one off Amazon and I personally love them and use them for a lot of my Wii and Wii U games that support the Classic controller.

Cons from my use during the week:

• Wireless (I haven't noticed any lag, but I haven't done any actual lag input testing.)
  
• No rumble (Controller is also on the lighter side because of no rumble motor. But for me this was a niche thing since I never noticed it in Melee and beyond.)
  
• Wii-mote will consume batteries (If you don't have rechargeable ones for your Wii-motes.)
  
• Menu buttons are made from mushy rubber material (These are prone to sticking due to the material, but you shouldn't be using those buttons much while playing.)
  
  Other than that it's essentially the same as a Gamecube with a few extras.
  
  EDIT: Forgot to add Walmart has them for cheapest ATM. ($25 MSRP) Amazon's has it a bit above MSRP due to demand since Nintendo underestimated the Adaptors and Amazon warehouses are sold out.

Link to the adapter. It explains why it's better in the video. The TL;DW is the official Nintendo adapter is USB 2.0 and this is USB 3.0 so the transfer speeds are just inherently faster. Plus it's like half the price of the official one.

Used it to play Brawl once on my Wii U in Wii mode since the USB adapters only work with Sm4sh.

This is not true.

There isn't any best controller as it is pure preference, the older controllers generally have a stickbox that feels less resistant than the newer ones.
The coating on the new WiiU controllers is different aswell.

Also the official WiiU adapter has a great 3rd party equivalent from mayflash found here.

The Nintendo adapter is only meant to be compatible with the WiiU, and it is a godsend that Dolphin supports it natively. Unless you are using the Mayflash adapter which can switch to PC mode instead of WiiU mode, there is no other use for such an adapter.

If you want to connect multiple controllers, you'll need to get a usb c converter, and you'll need a 3rd party stand so the plug can stick out of the bottom. Or you can wait for that kickstarter one.
