Hey! Thanks so much for your quick and extremely informative reply.

I'll definitely spend more time on my legs and on the exercise balls in the coming weeks.

You're right, they do have a board, boots, bindings, helmets and goggles, so the only things I need myself are... the rest of the things you mentioned.

Doing my shopping on Amazon rn (I'm kind of excited), mind if I ask for a bit more help?

Like, would a jacket like this be alright?

https://www.amazon.de/Ultrasport-Herren-Softshelljacke-Everest-Schwarz/dp/B00FXNI33A/ref=sr_1_2?s=sports&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1484340550&sr=1-2&keywords=snowboardjacke&th=1&psc=1

And some of the snowboarding trousers have straps, are they really necessary?

Again, thanks!!

i'm going to recommend buying last year's Burton Custom.

amazon - last year's 154 custom

the Custom is a board that burton's been making for about 20 year. and has been a best seller for years, and for good reason: it's a great all around board.

since it's been around so long, it's so well refined and doesn't change much year to year, so buying last year's board get's you a great discount without sacrificing quality.

edit: you can find many reviews of the custom online, including a review from the same guy who you linked

Dragon Alliance NFXS Ski Goggles, Danny Davis/Red Ion + Dark Smoke https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IAOBHUK/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_LPjVub1A8R3EA

Not as good of a deal as I got on them but they are awesome goggles. I'm sure the APX is good too, definitely check Amazon for deals. I got mine for less than half price.

Edit: The coal/red ion ones are 50% off right now

This weekend I was going thru winter sports discounted items and I have seen some boards under or about $200 there. I personally own Burton (which I am happy with) but I am curious, which other brands are good for beginner-level riding? Can you actually get anything good for this low? Here is a list of decent looking boards I have found - any specifics about these brands?

I got these, tore the headset and ear pieces apart to get only the wires and speaker, threw the speaker in my Red Mutiny helmet, routed the wire out and plugged into a volume control extension and keep that dangling out of my pocket. Works like a charm. The extension is a cheap piece of shit, so I'll have to replace it every season, but considering it's only $5, it's not bad. Sound quality is pretty good, but will never beat riding with Bose IE2 like I used to (I prefer the convenience and comfort of having speakers in my helmet as compared to having separate ear buds).

I think there's a tutorial online somewhere on how to properly deconstruct these headphones.

Bought this last year. Getting it centered took a while (gotta jump back and forth on each side and snug the clamps evenly). Drove it for a week before putting a board on it and didn't have any issues for a month, drove 10 hours with a board on and found one of the clamps were coming loose. Tightened it up and didn't have any more issues for that week or the trip back. After that no issues. I'm glad I went with a cheap one, more money to put to other snowboard related things. Oh I got a thule top bar clamp set for $40 at a second hand store. I like that Raxstars clamp, I might get that if it looks like i'll be carrying 3 boards this year. But the rack is pretty universal, fit fine on my lancer so if your car does die on you they are reusable. (Of course the obvious solution is to get a WRX with factory racks...)

My only warning is that i've heard on here that roof racks get hit a lot by rocks getting to the mountain and the recommendation is to get a full case. This also helps with space inside because now your boots and other thingies can fit as well.

I bought a “North” kit on amazon for like $85 last year. Came with the iron, scraper, nylon brush, diamond stone, edge sharpener, and a brick of wax. Pretty good deal and comes with a nice carry bag. I also went to dollar general and bought a plastic shower curtain to put down when I wax for like $2 saves on cleanup

Your link doesn't work for me, but I think these are what you're talking about?

Looks pretty awesome, and it's tempting me to finally buy a smartphone :)

u/I_cant_even_zeach · 6 pointsr/snowboarding

I like the idea. If anyone is interested, these are the best ones I've found so far. They fit perfect with my Burton Rulers.

snowboard pants can be washed but you really shouldn't have to. Get baggy, uninsulated snowboard pants with crotch venting. You are going to have to play around with what you wear under. For me uninsulated pants and a pair of regular sweatpants is perfect till it starts getting pretty cold. Once its under ~15 ill throw on thermal pants or some flannel pajama pants as well.

To wash snowboard pants, you just need to retreat them with waterproofing during the process. you really shouldnt have to wash them more than once or twice a season though. Check out nixwax, or 3m. I use this and it seems to be fine. http://www.amazon.com/Scotchgard-Durable-Water-Repellent-12-Ounce/dp/B004ZP83HI

I have the GoPro HD Hero 2 outdoors edition, this edition will come with a lot of what you need, like sticky mounts to mount to your helmet. You will need to get an SD card because GoPros do not come with them, i went on amazon and bought a 32 GB one, http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-32GB-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-032G-B35/dp/B002G12OBO/ref=pd_cp_e_2 there's the link for that. 32 GB is the biggest it will take and i recommend getting that, because with that the battery will die before you run out of space. Another accessorie i suggest getting is a pole mount from www.gopole.com this is the classic mount for snowboarding, it allows you to film yourself or turn it around and film friends to make those nice edits. If you are debating between HD Hero and Hero 2 go with Hero 2, its a little more but its worth it for the quality of the video, I got mine discounted on amazon http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-HD-HERO2-Outdoor-Edition/dp/B005WY3TI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346967661&sr=8-1&keywords=gopro+2

I had an older Contour and while it has a nice slim form factor, it was kind of annoying how you couldn't see what you were filming. Newer models have wi-fi connectivity so you can use your phone as a viewfinder, however.

What made me decide to replace the Contour with a GoPro is the fact that the video clarity and color grading is much nicer than the Contour's. Just search for youtube videos comparing the two and you'll see. Also, GoPro's have much better aftermarket support than Contours (or any other "action" cams, for that matter).

If you want something similar to a gopro but cheaper, I saw a post here recommending this chinese knockoff a few weeks ago:

http://www.amazon.com/SJ5000-Version-Digital-Recorder-Bicycle/dp/B00N7ERX1U

I have zero experience with these cameras and I don't have any idea on whether they're any good or not. But if you're trying to save some money they may be worth a shot.

This would be a good resource. David is a well respected skier and writer in the Stowe/Waterbury area. The back and side country in Stowe really picks up later in the season, but keep an eye on the depth at the stake and you might get lucky. I wouldn't sleep on spruce peak either, there is a lot of really fun and accessible glades to ride off the top of the old Big Spruce lift.

I dunno if I'm doing it wrong. but every season I wash all our clothes in the washer with just a touch of normal detergent. then i re-water proof them with [nikwax repellent](
http://www.amazon.com/Nikwax-Direct-Wash-Fabric-Repellent/dp/B0019GOKK0/ref=pd_bxgy_sg_img_y) seems to get them clean and the re-waterproofing works like a charm. never had any repellent issues.

either way do something. dont be the stinky guy :)

Powder coated aluminum hooks. Two screw holes with felt covering all the way to the end. Just looked like the best bang for buck. Super happy with them.

I think there is another option. Those are kind of expensive.

I got these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0072LAAA0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and then hooked these up https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000JD34/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and there you go! Two for $100. Seems like you get a sweet deal though so if you can swing it those radios are really nice too, but theyre the same thing.

Radios in the bc are immensely helpful. I got caught in an avalanche last year, but my partner yelled up to me to avoid an area I couldn't see. I didnt hear him. Lots of stories go like that. If you can get an extra for a friend that doesnt have one.

Also crash pants / pads.

I also just started, Friday was my first time on a snowboard. Loved it!

I got this of amazon for like $20....https://www.amazon.com/JBM-Adjustable-Protective-Multi-sports-Purpose/dp/B014UO0EGG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1483286455&sr=8-4&keywords=crash+pants

Helps protect your tailbone/butt when you fall square on it.....which you will probably do quite a few times. I highly recommend, your non-hurt tail bone will thank you!

I went from 235lb to 190lb at 6'3, and it most definitely helped me. I do upper body and core-strength workout while I watch tv at home after work, run a bit of stairs at the stadium for cardio when the opportunity permits and follow this food diet on/off for 1 month on and 2-3 months off ([Clean Diet] (http://www.amazon.com/Clean----Expanded-Edition-Revolutionary/dp/0062201662/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343238071&sr=8-1&keywords=clean+diet)). The stair running can easily be subbed with jump-rope at home etc. :)

Edit: when it comes to the diet, I don't order all their vitams and crap, I just buy the stuff I need from a farmers market and make stuff at home. Very easy and cheap :)
