Could be caused by a poor wifi signal, a poor internet connection, or a squirrelly router.

The first thing my gf and I always do when our games start derping out connectionwise is to unplug the cable modem and our separate router, let them sit for 30 seconds, and then replug them, so they both have to reboot. Usually the router is rock solid, and it's the modem, but we do both just as a routine.

If your internet connection from your ISP seems stable, then you may have range issues with your wifi. Here are some options.

I recently bought one of these to replace my aging router and found out that my router suprisingly was the bottleneck in my upload and download speeds. I got the refurbed one I linked for much cheaper, and it's awesome, so I bought a couple more just to stock up for whenever I need another one. The signal is much stronger meaning better range. May solve your range problem just by replacing your router. If they're out of that one, you can buy the AC1750 refurbed for roughly $10 more, and it'll just be a better version of the AC1600.

Btw, I don't even dick around with any non-Netgear routers any more, I've used all types and Netgear has always been reliable, and they even flatout will encourage you to dinkle around with installing third-party firmware on their routers if you feel so inclined to give the router additonal functionality, specifically through this website. I always do that, but I didn't even bother with my new AC1600, because the stock firmware is more than adequate for a home situation.

Another option is to buy a wifi range extender. I recently bought my sister and brother-in-law one of these to strengthen the signal in the second floor of their condo. I got that one, because it meets the latest 802.11ac wifi standard, so it'll won't be a bottleneck anywhere it's used, but you could comfortably use this one, which is much cheaper and still plenty fast. Installation is simple. Plug it in somewhere where the signal from your current router is still pretty good, and then follow the instructions to set up its unique network ID and link it to your current router. Then set your Wii U to link to the extender network ID instead of the main router to get a stronger signal. One nice thing about those wifi extenders is that you can actually take an ethernet cable off them to plug into whatever's nearby. The bridge between the main router and extender is wireless, but the connection to the extender can be wired. Some people seem to have better luck buying an ethernet adapter for the Wii U, rather than relying on its wifi hardware, although I've never had any major issues with the Wii U's wifi capabilities.

Easiest thing?

  • Invest in a newer, more powerful router.

    Second easiest?

  • See if any alternate firmwares (Tomato, OpenWRT, DD-WRT, etc) are able to be installed to your router. It may not be as good as buying a new $300 router, but it'll be a lot better than how your router came out of the box.

    Toughest?

  • If you have any old computers lying around (Assuming they're from the past 10 years), make sure it has 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports, and get it set up as a physical firewall (with PFSense or the likes).

DDoS is a compound problem. First, the packets being sent to you can saturate your internet connection. The bigger issue with most consumer routers is the fact that they generally try to protect against this thing by default, but are underpowered for the task.

Consumer routers try to do as much as they can, and they have quite the workload.

I'm going to use an analogy here with physical snail mail since no one is too interested in jargon.

You are you, and you're looking forward to sending and receiving letters to/from your friends. Your router is a small team of people you've hired to make sure you get only the letters that matter to you.

    The Team

  • Firewall
  • Router
  • Switch
  • Access Point

First there's Firewall, his job is to stand at the mail box and take the letters that are coming in, read them and determine if they are letters that you actually want. He also looks out for you by throwing out letters you may be trying to send to a Nigerian Prince, or anyone else who doesn't have your best interest in mind..

There's Router, he takes mail from Firewall and make sure it get's to Switch, and that mail Switch gives him is given to Firewall.

Switch is this ridiculous little guy, he knows where you are at any given time if you're home. He takes the mail from Router and hands it off to you, and takes mail you want to send and gives it to Router (who gives it to Firewall), he also takes mail from one room of your house to another. Switch does this all simultaneously.

If Switch knows you aren't within a room in the blueprints he has memorized, but are still able to get your mail somehow he gives it to Acess Point (AP for short).

AP folds your letters into paper airplanes and throws them to you, and gives the paper airplane letters you throw back to switch. He can only throw or catch one plane at a time though, if he sees two in the air at any given point he ignores both of them and tells the people who threw them to wait different amounts of time before trying to throw the paper airplane again (which of course is done so by paper airplane). ^(This is why gaming on WiFi is so much worse than on a wired connection. Having any other devices on WiFi dramatically increases the likelihood that packets will be dropped and resent, especially if those other devices are doing frequent transfers. e.g. Streaming, web browsing, etc. The number one thing to kill a consistent online gaming experience is a separate VoIP service running on WiFi at the same time.)

^((If you play Splatoon on WiFi, andhave an Amazon Prime account.) ^A__LAN_adapteris$9^(, and will dramatically improve any "lag" issues you may be experiencing) ^(even if you don't notice them now!)^)

Phew, still with me? Good, we're almost done

Ideally this would all be done by different people, but you probably don't receive enough mail to make it worth hiring one person for each job; so you hire one guy to do it all for you.

A DDoS, in this case, is the equivalent of having this show up at your doorstep. Router works as fast as he possibly can, he has to examine each and every envelope and make sure that it's something you actually want so he can get it to you. The problem is two more of those things show up before he's done and he never manages to get to the point of sending your mail.

Since your friends are no longer getting mail from you, they stop trying to keep you in the loop.

    **

Wordy, but accurate enough to hopefully help you (and everyone else who reads this) gain a functional understanding of everything your "Wireless Router" is
    actually* doing.

Thanks... you take care as well!

All right, you asked for it. But be warned, I'm a real stickler on my cocktail recipes. If you can't manage the recipe below before the weekend, just have a Vodka martini for me, VERY cold, heavy on the Dry Vermouth and 2 olives! If you can't mange that... just turn up whatever bottle you have, belch loudly, and yell, "MAN, FUCK THIS FUCKING SHIT... THAT'S JUST NOT POSSIBLE" at the next player who splats you.

Double Bourbon Old Fashioned, Martini Style, Extra Sweet

2 Shots (100mL) Cheap Bourbon

2 Tablespoons (30mL) Simple Syrup

4 Dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters (Do NOT get the Angostura Orange Bitters accidentally... it's terrible)

Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Fill to top with ice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Pour into a frozen Martini glass. Garnish with a (proper) lemon twist, a maraschino cherry, and a drizzle of cherry juice on top.

Extra notes:

Cheap Bourbon Preference: Benchmark or Evan Williams - Evan has slightly more bite which I like, but Benchmark is quite good for the price. Less than $20 for a 1.75L

Simple Syrup Recipe: 50/50 ratio - Measure equal parts sugar and water into a Pyrex measuring cup. I actually use a "Dry" measuring cup to get exact measurements of the the sugar AND water into the Pyrex for consistency. Bring to boil in microwave. Stir, cool, store and keep.

No need to bother with the expensive, fancy bitters. Can't go wrong with this old staple! Angostura Aromatic is honestly my favorite and it's also the most common.
http://www.popsugar.com/food/What-Angostura-Bitters-7829426
(Side note: I do also very much like Regans’ Orange Bitters No. 6. It's not too sickly/disgustingly sweet like the Angostura Orange variety, and it's a little bit peppery - so, yum)

Proper lemon twist: Run a channel knive all the way around the lemon once. Pull/twist gently on the resulting lemon peel to release some of that citrus oil on the skin. Wrap the peel around your finger or a spoon handle or something to create the curly-Q.
This is my lemon zester. The channel knife works VERY well at channeling off a lemon twist.

This might sound like a lot of work but at my old place I got this 100 ft ethernet cable for my Wii U and it still serves me pretty well. It was well worth it. Without a cable unless you've got amazing WiFi you'll probably run into a lot of issues that'll sap the fun right out of playing.

u/S-T-R-E-G-A · 1 pointr/splatoon

I used to have problems but changed my wifi and I can't remember the last time I disconnected.

I got an Ethernet adapter for ARMs which also eliminated my connection issues. I got this one
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MYT481C

Go with Ethernet if it's an option, even if your staring right at your access point while playing. This game has a zero tolerance policy. You only get like 2 game ticks before the room boots you. I don't blame the game for choosing to be less forgiving and more accurate. It encouraged me to make some changes and everyone I play with wins (emotionally) because of it.

u/CopperRaven · 2 pointsr/splatoon

I'm not going to say this will totally work for you because I don't know all the factors that made this work for me but here is what I did. (my switch was also too far away to run a cable to). I bought this https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Powerline-Pass-Through-TL-PA4020P-KIT/dp/B010Q29OW6/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1509712689&sr=8-8&keywords=ethernet+powerline+adapter and this https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Ethernet-Adapter-Nintendo-Chromebook/dp/B00MYT481C/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1509712641&sr=8-5&keywords=switch+ethernet+adapter&dpID=41xJwvUzySL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

The powerline adapter was easy to set up and in my house the outlets they are in are on different breakers and that seems fine. After setting them up, plugging in the switch, and setting it to run on wired not wi-fi there's one more thing I did. In a connection test I saw my nat type was B also, everyone said that wasn't great and it should be A for best performance so after lots of googling I figured out how to change that in my router settings.

For me I have comcast so to get to my router settings I type 10.0.0.1 into my address bar and enter the default username and password for comcast (admin ; password) then on the left there is and advanced tab and under that DMZ. Enable that and for the host set the switch's ip witch you can see in the connection test, mine was 10.0.0.11 yours will probably be different. Save that then run a connection test again and it should be type A. Whatever router you have should have something similar so just google how to set up dmz for your specific brand.

After doing this I very rarely disconnect.

u/barnacleman9 · 2 pointsr/splatoon

Yep, it works great. I have the Mayflash adapter and all I have to do is increase the motion aim sensitivity a couple of notches higher than when I'm using JoyCon. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-Magic-NS-Wireless-Controller-Nintendo/dp/B079B5KHWQ

That adapter is also great because you can plug your controller in with a cable or connect it with Bluetooth. It also works for more than just the Switch, for example you could use a Dualshock 4 on an Xbox One if you wanted, and vice versa.

u/GooTangClam · 3 pointsr/splatoon

It's [Mumba Nintendo Switch case] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072M2G7S8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and I also have this screen protector. I don't know how comfortable grip is. I haven't used handheld mode ever since I got the pro controller. But it seems very sturdy and got 5 star reviews on amazon.

fyi try this goose neck mount if you want to play on the bed! I love this one when I'm feeling super lazy. But it's pain in the ass to adjust and put the switch on the mount. Maybe there is better one someone else can suggest.

Edit: forgot to mention, you cannot use the stand when its on the case! I wish it has a stand built in on the case. Also I dont know if it fits in the dock because I took it apart and replaced it with smaller dock.

u/MrSnifflez93 · 1 pointr/splatoon

link for the neon green / pink joycons placeholder on amazon?

EDIT: Are you talking about this ? If so, I wouldn't put too much faith into it.. Have speculations on third parties trying to scalp from JP Imports.. rather than Official Nintendo support..

u/Saxophobe · 2 pointsr/splatoon

Seems like we're all in luck! Look what I just saw popped up today on Amazon...

https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B072BZ66JL

(that one was on Amazon France, and was the cheapest I've seen so far). However, if they don't deliver to where you live, it seems that the main USA amazon has these as japanese imports with international shipping (much more expensive, but is a way to get them if all else fails)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072BZ66JL

not seen them on any of the other amazons yet, but I reckon if given long enough they eventually will. (but for now, those above two methods are already possible!)

Hope this helps!

u/woomy_thrower · 2 pointsr/splatoon

The wireless card in the wiiu is laughably bad, if you use a wired connection you'll see an immediate difference. If the modem/router being in different room is an issue pick up a cheap powerline adapter.

getting this powerline adapter

and this ethernet adapter

will cost you under $40 but give you a vastly superior online experience. I use the same ethernet adapter and it made online so much better. The way powerline works is you plug one into the wall near your router and one near your console, the connection is sent through the powerlines in your wall, it's very cool stuff.

u/urboipure · 3 pointsr/splatoon

Haha, I was going to get red and blue but before my birthday Walmart released a Splatoon bundle and my mom asked if I wanted that one and of course I said yes!
Also if you want to buy the joycons on there own they sell them on Amazon, here's a link https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Joy-Neon-Green/dp/B072BZ66JL

u/theUnLuckyCat · 1 pointr/splatoon

I use the included wrist strap for a slightly better fit. You could also use the included grip for just the one JoyCon and still use them split. But if I were to buy an accessory, it would be a battery pack for both a heftier controller and the convenience of never having to charge the things attached to the Switch itself (cheap knockoffs also available).

Although the button layout on the Pro is a lot better, so it's great for that (and if there's ever any couch multiplayer).

u/suburbanbird · 0 pointsr/splatoon

If you are looking for an adapter. I would suggest this one on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Network-Adapter-UtechSmart-Ethernet-Chromebook/dp/B00F41TWAO

It is cheap, and it worked perfectly for my Wii U and my Switch.

u/sevenstarfall · 10 pointsr/splatoon

That's a great idea. Someone at the Con thought they were Capri Sun packs :). They are just Mylar bags that I stuffed with poly filling, and sewed to the hats. I sewed some roping over them too to keep them in place. These are the bags I bought.

you can get a random one on amazon for like 10 bucks. I got one for my wii u and it works on my switch as well.

edit:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MYT481C/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

this is the one I got, so I can guarantee it works on switch.

u/Wretro · 3 pointsr/splatoon

The ones by the amiibo are these from Japan. Along with the silicone ones I have, they also have a clear crystal case with the splat design on it here.

For the Joy-Con connected to my Switch, do you mean the clear crystal case I have them in or the actual colors? Because those are the green/pink Joy-con that Japan/Europe received.

u/Mitsun · 11 pointsr/splatoon

Listings are up on Amazon JP, just not available to order yet.

Hard cover joycon cases: Type A // Type B

Silicon joycon cases: Type A // Type B

Front cover: Type A // Type B

Quick pouch: Type A // Type B

I'm getting type B of each for sure. (=`ω´=)

Hey, I was able to resolve my issue by buying an ethernet adapter from Amazon for $10 and setting up my Wii U with a wired connection. This is the one I bought specifically: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F41TWAO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I have no idea why the wireless connection started having issues suddenly. My router and console are in the same room and about 4-5 feet apart. I troubleshooted with both Nintendo and Comcast and none of their suggestions helped. Bought the adapter as a last resort and now everything works again. Hope this is helpful to anyone having the same issue.

u/beerSnobbery · 1 pointr/splatoon

My WiiU suddenly had issues like this a while back. I picked up a LAN adapter and all my problems went away. I'd recommend it as a possible solution if you don't mind having to run an Ethernet cable to your WiiU.

u/IkananXIII · 2 pointsr/splatoon

If I may make a suggestion, have you tried using the joycons on their own, without the grip? I found the grip uncomfortable as well, so I use the Joycons separately with these battery pack attachments to make them nice and fat and comfortable to hold. Aiming with a single joycon is so snappy and feels great. It's definitely something I think everyone should try at least once. I just use the battery packs to make the joycons more ergonomic, but you can also put one or two batteries in each one to adjust the weight to your liking. And obviously they'll charge the controller, though I've never found a need for that so I just use dead batteries to add some weight.

u/fatluger1 · 1 pointr/splatoon

I bought one of the ethernet Lan adapters for Wii U off of Amazon for around $10 along with the game (Ive pasted the link to an example product below. Be sure that the one you purchase says it will work with a Wii U because there are different types of USB Lan adapters that may not be compatible with it). It is not a bad investment if you can afford it as wired connections tend to be more stable and I would hate for your first few days of splatoon-ing to be dampened by connection issues!

u/kitten_based_economy · 0 pointsr/splatoon

Yeah I know the struggle. There would be times where I would be kicked off of like 25% of my games and days that were literally unplayable. After getting this adapter, I might get dropped maybe a few times per month. I sometimes get dropped during splatfests but I'm guessing that has more to do with Nintendo's servers than with my connection.

If you do decide to get a USB adapter, after plugging it in you have to go the system settings and disable your WiiU's wifi connection to force it to used the wired one.

This one is only $10. Depending on your router, you may not notice a big difference though. I've played both ways and do notice a little less lag when using the adapter.

u/geekrelief · 2 pointsr/splatoon

Not any ethernet adapter will do. I bought one that didn't support the Wii U, I think because it was USB 3.0. I got this working one off amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Support-AX88772-UtechSmart-Ethernet-Chromebook/dp/B00F41TWAO

u/KingdaToro · 2 pointsr/splatoon

Have you tried a wired connection? Get an adapter and connect an ethernet cable between it and your router. The Wii U's Wi-Fi hardware isn't very good.

u/tonuchi · 6 pointsr/splatoon

That's the secret. They do.

To my knowledge Nintendo aren't selling one themselves but there are a load you can buy that should work.

I am using this one, UGREEN USB Ethernet , USB Network Adapter - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MYT481C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
