Definitely agree with going on a walk before leaving. If you can, quarantine him in a room so he doesn't have access to the whole house to chew on things.
When we leave the house I either put the tv on HGTV or Food network (channels that won't have noises to upset the dogs) or I turn the radio on. I find this helps to soothe them.
If it's feasible, find a dog walker to come play with him while you're gone. It has done wonders for our pup.
Also, our vet recommended Rescue Remedy when our springer was having anxiety attacks. Also works well during thunder storms. All natural, just a few drops does the trick. She is gorgeous. And yes, she will mature as she gets older, but she'll always have that fun-loving spirit. I'm surprised she doesn't like to swim, mine always did. Our springer gained a lot of maturity after she had a litter of puppies. I'm not sure if you were ever considering that, but it did change her personality a little. In the short term, probably the best thing for both of you would be to get her more exercise. I don't use anything fancy, but I do brush mine at least once every other day though. I just use a regular style pet brush and a steel comb for finishing and keeping the fur on her ears and legs from matting. Also, I highly suggest having lint rollers/pet hair rollers around for your family and friends to use on their way out of your house, that should alleviate their complaining. I use Scotch-Brite Lint Rollers but I'm sure some of the cheaper ones work well enough as well.

I used to work at a pet store and I have mixed feelings about the FURminator. People swear by it because it always removes a lot of fur, but it's designed to remove the undercoat whether or not it's already shedding. So overusing it can irritate the skin and damage the coat by removing too much undercoat.

I would recommend a basic slicker brush with a push button that makes removing the fur from the brush really easily. This can (and should) be used regularly on a springer to prevent tangles and remove loose fur.
