You can go by wirecutters recommendation NOTE: the runner up is on sale today!

>The Magellan MiVue 420 DashCam is a solid alternative to the Papago GoSafe 535. It offers the same super-sharp 1296p resolution and detailed footage in all sorts of lighting, but with a larger display (2.7 versus 2 inches). The MiVue 420 also includes an integrated GPS receiver, which records your car’s location and speed along with the video. Like the GoSafe 535, the MiVue 420 provides a number of safety alerts that can be useful, although we found some to be overly active and annoying. (Fortunately, you can turn them off easily.) However, the MiVue 420 has a narrower, 140-degree field of view and isn’t quite as easy to use as the GoSafe 535. It’s also more expensive than our top pick typically, though we’ve seen this Magellan model’s price drop to as low as about $70—you should get the MiVue 420 if it’s less expensive than our top pick, as long as you don’t mind its narrower field of view.

I linked the walmart for Papago but if you have Citi Credit Card, buy from amazon and get it price matched. You still loose a bit on taxes.

Or the universally appraised and recommended frequenty in dashcam forums A119S or A119. Rarely go on sale but often can be combined with the frequent 20% off ebay deals as long as you get it from trusted seller (OCD_Tronics one comes to mind)

Yeah that rust bubble in the second photo worries me. Might be better off getting the whole top repainted. Which sucks because those places don't always do the best job. You could find somewhere who will do it better and since it's just the roof it shouldn't be too bad. It won't be cheap but it should be less than $500.

Next time make sure to get those addressed right away. A little tube of touch up paint and a cheap dropper from amazon can get you great results.

I found the horn to be way too wimpy so I replaced the stock one with this PIAA pair.

I also didn't want to screw my plates straight through the front bumper or directly against the back bumper so I put on license plate brackets that I think make it look much nicer.

I took the advice from a bunch of folks on the subaruoutback.org forums and put in a new 19mm sway bar. It was a pretty easy install, but honestly I can't tell if the drive is better or it's just a placebo effect.

Then just a couple of simple quality of life things just because:

Honestly, it's cheaper and easier to use something like a Nexus 7 mounted in your car with the Android Auto app. Works exactly the same, non-invasive, and is easier to update.

Granted it's not as integrated, but it's what I have in my 2011 OB. I bought this CD player magnetic mount that holds my Nexus 7 (2013) fine. I do have T-Mobile so I tether at no extra charge to it from my phone, but this whole setup only cost the price of the mount for me and I love it.

I’ve got a Noz2Noz 36” soft crate that fits perfectly in the back. I’ve had it about 1.5 years and use it all the time. It’s awesome.

Hey sorry for the delay. Yup I bought the following (sorry its Canadian links, but you'll get the idea).

So I wound up buying a NEX 2440 off Crutchfield. So far it's working great. Should be about $600 (I'm in Canada so if you're in the states your prices will be lower.)

Here's the part list I went with ( again you may need to look up US equivalents)

The 12v to 6v downgraded is used to provide the correct power output for the backup camera. The idatalink maestro is for maintaining steering wheel controls.

If anyone has questions about the specifics, please let me know!

Pic of the broken part? Used is definitely the best option, but could the broken part be put back on? Little super glue? Depending if there is a lever you can put some Sugru on it as a nice grip that won't cut your finger.

Oh goodie, so that's basically the easiest possible combination. (I was asking about steering wheel controls and subwoofers because you'd need even more adapters for those. And auto climate control makes the din kit a pain in the ass, you gotta import it from Japan. But yours looks like a base model without any of that.)

So you're going to need:

I have a bottle of hand sanitizer that fits in that space perfectly! And then one of these for my phone: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G0X56YU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_NkH1AbP91DWDF

I have used the universal kayak racks for 30 bucks on Amazon and I have also just laid it across the bar. Both work fine. The OB has flat bars though and the bought racks have a round bracket but just tightening them down really made it secure. I have not used them since they got replaced (a tree ripped them off during the hurricanes) but even when they were used, they held up to some pretty rigorous kayak hauling.

Just got an outback myself so I spent the last week looking for options. I have a friend that car camps and uses a 4" foam mattress topper so I know that can work. I saw the tri-fold mattress below on sale and it looks like it can compress so I'm giving that a try. I liked it because it seemed easier to stow than a topper you'd have to roll up. If it doesn't end up meeting my needs I'll return it and go with a mattress topper.

Milliard Tri Folding Mattress, with Ultra Soft Removable Cover and Non-Slip Bottom, (Single 75" x 25") Better Than An Air Mattress https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W67PJ4M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ZgIhAb99C9B9T

Edit: just got the tri-fold delivered. Looks like it'll take up more space if that's an issue for you. The pictures looked like it could compress because it's shipped vacuum packed. You should be able to stack stuff on it no problem but I think a stuff sack is out of the question. Also a little heavy but seems so damn comfy.

I have a couple of different models in our cars. This Aukey dash cam which already saved me having to pay my deductible when someone rear ended my Outback. I have this YI dash cam in my wife's CRV and my kids cars and it does nicely. I know there are better cams but these perform well for the money.

Hey, my wife has this exact car, with that exact mileage! Congrats! Did you buy it from a private party or a dealer? What did you pay for it?

  • First things first, learn about your car.
  • Next, take it to a mechanic and make sure everything is okay. At 60K miles, that car needs a major service. It's not very expensive if you don't end up needing new tires. Dealer quoted us $880. I took ours to a local mechanic and it cost ~$500. Got the tires rotated for free at Costco.
  • Check if you have any open recalls: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls
  • Get a car wash and wax to protect the paint from the elements.

    Mods:

  • We got a class III 2" towing hitch put on the car. That gets used all the time. Got it done at U-haul I think. It's been forever.
  • We've tried many different bluetooth options for phone connectivity but they've all been shit. Thinking of switching out the media player for something like this Pioneer system.
  • I haven't done this yet, but I'm looking into replacing the lights with LEDs all over the place in both cars. Looking at Diode Dynamics for this.
  • Got a roof basket.
