Features:
I have one of these, I upgraded the RAM with this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006YG8X9Y - works great, even though 8GB is probably overkill. Installation was really easy, I suggest running the RAM test from the Synology Assistant to make sure all is OK.
I use 2 x 6TB WD Reds in mine, SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid), and use Amazon Glacier to back up important folders (such as Photos) as my offsite insurance plan. It's pretty cheap to backup, monthly costs are around $0.80. It get's expensive to restore so this offsite backup solution is mostly an "insurance policy" in case of house fire or something like that.
i just bought this model, a cyberpower st900u, for 75 dollars from amazon. here is a link:
https://www.amazon.com/CyberPower-ST900U-Standby-Outlets-Charging/dp/B07GZT2QW7/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=cyberpower+st900u&qid=1564108495&s=gateway&sr=8-1
sadly, i had a real power outage but the unit performed like a champ. not happy about the outage, but the UPS did its job well. My NAS remained up, and in fact alerted me that it had swtiched to battery power. Nice job there Synology! At 500 watts it could power your synology for a good while if that's all that is on it. This model does have a usb port and cable to communicate with the NAS too. Configurable in hardware/power. i'm very happy with it so far. Had it for about 2 weeks.
I would recommend this RAM.
The 1815+ can recognize the full amount and it can be useful in multiple transcoded streams.
I would get a router that supports the link agreggation capabilties of the 1815+
Don't forget an uninteruptable power supply.
For drives, I would probably go with HGSTs. This is of course based on backblaze's data, but it appears that some of the failure rates are changing, so you may want to look into that.
8 (plus one or two on hand for failures) is a huge chunk of change. I recommend watching hard drive prices on camel, camel, camel for price drops.
Welcome to the world of Synology. They are fucking awesome.
I actually went with this Arctic F9 Silent:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0119SG8X4
It's a lot cheaper, it's reviewed well at Amazon and Newegg, and most importantly of all, I bought several 120mm Noctua fans for my Antec P182 cases years ago and ended up returning all of them. I thought they were highly overrated. I had much better luck with Nexus and Scythe Slipstream (their old sleeve bearing model) fans. Between case fans at 500 RPM and CPU fan at 200 RPM and several other noise-reducing measures, my main P182 is dead silent in a very quiet house. The Noctua fans I tried did not deliver these results. And I know everybody loved them even back then. That's why I ordered them! lol
To give people an idea of what I can hear in my house 50+ feet away and around a corner, I had to take measures against my WD80EAFX's PWL clunk (every 5 seconds), which is audible in the NAS (sitting on the floor, and despite various measures to compensate for the hard rubber feet) at that distance. Thankfully, the velcro trick deadened this sound and the seeks. This PWL noise which recently began was one of the reasons I got the NAS. It was audible in my secondary P182 machine by my desk. In contrast, I have a single WD40EZRX in my main P182, also by my desk, and it's inaudible. That machine has Acoustipack which I'm sure helps some, but that green drive is just quieter than the red. Speaking of the green, it has over 42,000 power-on hours and going strong. I hope it never dies. I'd be really hesitant to try another spinning drive for this machine 3 feet away from me, considering it can't improve on silent but could easily be worse.
Anyway, the goal here was 2-fold, to get an always-available file server that I can't hear in my quiet office, and I didn't have the option of moving my 2nd PC. The DS218+ is a lot louder than even my 2nd PC, but with it sleeping most of the time, or at least having a quiet fan with the HDs hibernated, I should be able to live with it.
DS218play does not support Btrfs, only the DS218+. See the full list here.
If you don't plan to use Plex or any server-side media center that uses transcoding, like a client-side Kodi or VLC, then even a DS218j will suffice. In this line of thought, consider also using a 4-bay unit; a DS418j with 4x4TB drives is much more affordable than your proposal and offers the tranquility of SHR/RAID 5.
Whatever your decision, you have to have an external backup for periodic synchronizations - and obvious data safety. A twin Synology NAS is the recommended solution; not cheap, though. But a quick-n-easy option is a USB-based HD because of its versatility, like a 12TB WD Elements.
It’s entirely possible the disk is bad. You can return it to amazon and get a replacement; but as others suggested it would be good to attach I it to the pc to use WD tools to run diagnostics.
If you don’t have usb to Sata bridge — buy one, something like this (make sure it’s powered) https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Cable-Adapter-Converter-Support/dp/B00MYU0EAU/
It’s extremely useful to have one around the house. When your drives fail down the road (note how I sat “when”, not “if”) you would need to get diagnostic code using WD tools to request warranty replacement.
It is also possible that the ram in your nas is bad. You can run memory test via Synology Assistant.
So it's definitely a budget purchase ($60) but it works like a charm and has already saved my butt twice. It gave me about 30 minutes to shut down my NAS, and it works with the UPS management software built into DSM.
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Standby-UPS-400VA-Outlets/dp/B073Q48YGF/ref=sr_1_12?gclid=Cj0KCQjwz8bsBRC6ARIsAEyNnvrFjVhvDaQY_YEnqubouMVp2XYMW2I62J3bOtFhbBw6BXePWyEcUMEaAgCjEALw_wcB&hvadid=326732096327&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9033254&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=b&hvrand=16925324996256839084&hvtargid=kwd-294537293467&hydadcr=924_1012420393&keywords=computer%2Bups%2Bsystem&qid=1569865980&s=gateway&sr=8-12&th=1
ive yet to figure out why they don't build like ANY nas that natively supports m.2 and 10gbe. That said, the 1019+ is clearly not MEANT to be that fast.

The 1019+ uses Celeron J3455 which only has 6 pcie 2.0 lanes and 2 6.0 sata connectors which means they are already using PCI lanes for a sata controller. I'd guess your cpu would choke out before your network connection got even close to saturated with 10GbE even if it wasn't bottlenecked by PCIe 2. The biggest problem though is that I'm not aware of a single 10GbE NIC uses less than 4 lanes and the ONLY one using 2.0 lanes is the old single port sfp+ E10G15-F1.

Now you can find 2.5G nics that only use 1 lane, but they are usually on 3.0, on 2.0 I'd bet they still can't get that fast and you aren't really gaining much over dual 1G for all that modding. The bigger problem is as far as I'm aware they all use aquantia chips and I don't think Synology includes those drivers in their distro, its mainly intel, Mellanox, marvel and their own brand stuff.

Before you go down that road, I would at least try enabling the experimental smb multichannel functionality and lacp (need it at both ends or 10gb on your computer) and I believe windows 10 or some other client that's using the latest versions of SMB. I'd be surprised if it even hit their claimed 225MB/s as that was likely done with SSDs or faster drives under ideal circumstances.

If you want 10gbe, you gotta move up at least 1 model to like DS1618+ or DS1819+ or even just get a DS1817 which already has the dual 10GbE built in and is. rated to speeds. that warrant 10GbE.

A more realistic option you could try (though might still have driver issues) would be one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/Type-C-5GbE-Adapter-QNA-UC5G1T-QNAP/dp/B07RKLQPLP

While the onboard port is usb-c, it includes a C to A cable so clearly that's not a blocker. I'm sure eventually Synology will release their own to compete. The cpu in the 1019+ DOES support usb 3.0 and while it might not max out 5gb or even 2.5gb, it's probably going to give you the most throughput possible with a 1019+ (if it works).
I'm using Hikvision DS-2CD2342WD-I. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DH4NFJI A turret camera like this will reduce the nuisance of spiders. This is a 4 megapixel camera that you can happily reduce to fewer megapixels if you want. I'm using two of these, as well as two older hikvision bullet cameras with surveillance station. Setup with surveillance station was a piece of cake.
Various starlight cameras such as the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE (sold by "empire tech" on Amazon) are also well regarded on ipcamtalk, though I have personally not tried a starlight camera. Really depends on what you need for night vision capability. These are on my wishlist.
I'm a huge fan of the Cyberpower CP1000PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS, it works great with my NAS, has true sine wave output, 1030J surge protection, and EMI/RFI filtering (48dB, 150 Khz-100MHz).
So, I'm not in an office environment, but I bought one of these: https://www.amazon.com/APC-Battery-Protector-Back-UPS-BE600M1/dp/B01FWAZEIU/ for my 1019+.
It connects properly via USB, and the NAS estimates my time on battery at 3688 seconds. I have gotten emails when the power grid has gone shaky, and when it's come back. The DS1019+ is rated at 38.59w access and 13.32w hibernation... so very similar specs power wise.
Hope that helps.
> I would just buy an extra 4TB drive - they're like $100
Just to add someone might find this useful,
The easily shuckable 8TB WD Elements is $125 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-WDBWLG0080HBK-NESN/dp/B07D5V2ZXD
You may have already ordered this one but I was thrown off by the question and answers in the listing that it's not "pure" sine wave output and devices with active power factor correction power supplies (like synology NAS) might shut down when the unit switches to UPS. I instead opted for this Cyberpower CP1000PFCLCD which is working well to support a 5 drive DS1019+ (you don't say which type of NAS you are looking to protect.)
Just another camera for you to consider. I currently run two of these to cover my property - https://www.amazon.com/Foscam-Outdoor-Optical-Security-Camera/dp/B01MUNOP3V/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=foscam+fi9928p&qid=1563208252&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1 the picture quality is superb and they work well with surveillance station.

The best thing with these cameras is that the image at night is in colour if you are near street lamps or another type of low-level lighting. No more grainy black and white images.
Glad to know it worked. I was reading so many reviews stating that it doesn't support that much RAM (8 + 2GB)..
Will it take the HyperX 8GB 1866MHz DDR3L CL11 ? (link) in addition to the included 2GB ?
Thank you.
I agree that the Crucial kits are identical spec wise, when I looked at them on crucial's site the only difference I saw was that that Mac version was Halogen free, so I purchased the slightly cheaper one at the time (the Mac version), and I can confirm it works without any issues in my new DS1817+
With "for Mac" branding, the one I am using:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFW
Without "for Mac" branding:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007B5S52C
If you want to go "pro" on the "cheap", get an Ubiquiti Network UniFi Switch or if you're more old school and want the CLI and more fancy L3 features, the EdgeSwitch. It's enterprise quality gear at SOHO prices.
This is what I use personally: https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-US-24-Unifi-Switch/dp/B01LZBLO0U/ref=sr_1_5
Like all Unifi series gear from Ubiquiti it requires running their management software to configure it. Makes it super easy to setup if you're not into the CLI thing. Their Wifi AP's and other gear are reasonably priced and kick ass as well.
thank you! I have a 12V 1.4A power supply from a WD and it had enough power to boot it.
Do I need a 5A power supply like the dead one? Like this?
https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Synology-DiskStation-External-Charger/dp/B075SL2JQS
Or will 1.4A be sufficient?
Synology don’t even sell directly do they but potentially one of their resellers might discount at Black Friday.
Looks like prices at Amazon are fairly stable though. CamelCamelCamel link
You're welcome. You won't notice a difference in speed tbh.
Just be sure that the Stick is running at 1866MHz like the stock 2GB.
This one should also be working and is a little cheaper:
https://www.amazon.de/Kingston-HX318LS11IB-Arbeitsspeicher-DDR3-RAM-1866MHz/dp/B00VMCUAIM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1549543184&sr=8-4&keywords=8gb+ddr3+1866+sodimm
One of these. I have one on my desk supporting my gaming pc and my two Synology. Also have one on my wife’s desk and one on the living room entertainment system.
CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS System, 1000VA/600W, 10 Outlets, AVR, Mini-Tower https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00429N192/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-ysjDbD6GJ1CK
Might want to wait till amazon prime days one might go on sale...
My strongest suggestion remains is to post a long question over at /r/homelab
I did NO looking but did see this

Replacing the original SO-DIMM by a Crucial 8GB DDR3 1600 1.35v , ref: CT102464BF160B, did the trick.

I'm looking for a basic UPS that can handle a 918+, Verizon FiOS G1100 Gateway, Orbi, and switch.

Would it support automatic shutdown?
It might depend on the NAS. I know my DS1515+ came with two camera licenses for Surveillance Station, and the camera packs are indeed a bit expensive. First, here's a bit of info about the packs, since some devices might eat up more than one: https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/Device_License_Pack
And it looks like about $59 a camera for the license packs beyond what your NAS might already provide: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-Camera-License-Pack-CLP4/dp/B001JD8J8W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540961524&sr=8-1&keywords=surveillance+station+license&dpID=41bCVxXau5L&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
Factor in a few things long-term when looking at your alternatives. For some folks, a cloud solution makes more sense.
For me it wasn't really sensible relying on cloud offerings due to a combination of desired camera count, bandwidth requirements (busy/active scenes), and of course the subscription fees, when I already had capable hardware and storage. If I didn't already have/use the NAS for actual storage, then maybe I'd consider an online solution without always-on recording (it isn't really sensible doing that, and it's not really the norm anyway; record on activity detection). I have four of six licenses used at the moment and plan to add a couple more cameras later.
As for integrating what you have, the surveillance station stuff might be able to, but it'll deffo take a bit of research. See what the first link takes you to, for starters, I guess. Worst case I guess you can just make a share from the NAS that the existing NVR uses? Any reason you want to switch to using Surveillance Station to do the brain work?
This looks like it should do the trick, thanks for the heads up. Do you think a windows format (not the quick format but the full) will be sufficient to wipe all of my data from the drive?

You can leave the lat bay open or put a 5th SSD in. You can probably also use synologies dynamic load balancing and plug one port into each of your two switches.
I bought this one, works fine with my DS1517+ and is inexpensive. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FWAZEIU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've use 2 of the same: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006YG8X9Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Works flawlessly
I put a pair of these [Crucial 8GB] (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01979WD4U/) in mine. I'm sure there are tons of others that would work, but somewhere someone else said these would and they did.
If you're talking about pictures, they're probably in the 5-50mb range, which I'd guess is more streaming than random write.
If you have the money and just want to do it, go for it. But you could also test it first and see how it goes, I wouldn't be surprised if you get ~ full gigabit speeds writing pictures and videos.
You can put 8GB ($53) into the DS416play, then download and install the Docker package from the DS216+II.

I use an simple UPS from APC.
Just did this, not a bad process. wasn't able to get the mobo out but was still able to squeeze the ram in. Was a 1815+ but think it would be the same.

Purchased the 600 VA model APC Back-UPS (BE600M1) from Amazon for about $55 USD.
Not sure if anyone else encountered this, but it took a while before my 218j recognized that a UPS was connected via USB (~30 minutes).
this is a good guide. I bought the 8Gb Crucial Sticks (2x) found here, which are the "newer version" listed on the 8gb link of the blog post: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-14900-204-Pin-Upgrade-27-inch/dp/B01979WD4U/ref=dp_ob_title_ce?th=1

They are working fine and I did a memory test using the Synology Assistant program after I installed them. Be warned the memory test on 16gb of ram takes approximately about 6+ hours to perform after a reboot.

Pull the RAM, and put in the stock RAM, if the problem goes away, the problem is most likely the RAM you purchased. Some systems are really particular about things. This is what I have in my 918+.
