Great question! I'm going to keep an eye on for suggestions.

This author was on the radio a few months ago. I liked the interview but haven't read the book yet. $5 for ebook, has strong reviews

>Product Description

>You might call W.F. Strong a student of all things Texas. In 2010, he began sharing his 'Stories From Texas' vignettes on public radio stations, most recently on the Texas Standard news show's 30 stations. For this book celebrating his home state, Strong has collected 75 of his broadcasts. You'll hear his inimitably Texan voice in your mind's ear as he weaves stories on subjects ranging from how to ''talk Texan'' to Texas bards and troubadours; from tall Texas tales to Lone Star icons like Charles Goodnight, Tom Landry and Blue Bell ice cream; from legends and unsung heroes of the past to some heartfelt memories of his own. Strong agrees with John Steinbeck that ''Texas is a state of mind . . . a mystique closely approximating a religion,'' and every one of his stories embraces the Texas state of mind.

I've never cared for "the best" terms, I'm more into what fits for you and your budget. I got a dashcam and it lasted all but two years, the battery inside "popped" which caused the screen to go all blue. Not sure if the Texas heat or age got to it, my truck is parked in a carport and only gets mild evening sun.

So I bought this one from in 2016 for my front dash Amazon so far it does the job. If you hardwire it in make sure it has constant power even when the ignition is off since it is all capacitor the date and time will reset after so many hours without power.

This one is my rear camera, I got it free with gift cards when it was $25 and it has muted colors, trees are brownish, but it is okay for a rear dash.

The next upgrade I'd like is the YI dash cam

The top-priced BlackVue dash cams and battery packs along with Go Pro 6 not sure I'd leave these displayed in my vehicle, but if you want to spend that kind of money those are top priced.

Look into getting 32 or 64GB sd card and a mount for the mirror, the Texas heat on sticker types or suction will take a toll, mine are suction based and fall off randomly.

You'll find tons of "best of" videos and really will come away more confused. They all do the same basic operations, some link with your phone which is good for showing police or insurance, some track your speed and GPS, so those extras come with a price.

Pro tip: If you're ever involved in an accident or witness to one with a dashcam, do not ever mention you have a dashcam, get the information needed and let the video speak for you to police or the insurance company only.

I like my Annin flag. Made in USA and it’s all stitched which is what you want. Make sure you get nylon if you’re using it for residential purposes. Nylon looks a lot look more vibrant than polyester.

Don’t get cotton cause the colors will run. This is what I have.

Annin Flagmakers Model 145260 Texas State Flag 3x5 ft. Nylon SolarGuard Nyl-Glo 100% Made in USA to Official State Design Specifications. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0019010YA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FAM0BbPPDP3N8

Edit: you said local. Dixie flag has good stuff but their stuff is about as good as my Annin flag. They have really nice collegiate stuff too. I bought an A&M flag from them which is really nice. Get a flag pole off Amazon, they’re cheaper. Make sure you get a spinning flag pole.

this sort of makes me want to cry. we texans love our state and are very proud of it. we talk about how awesome texas is all the time, and we defend it to the detractors, but sometimes we forget just how good we actually have it. we have our problems, definitely, but we live in a state that is so unique that people in serbia want to read about us! so thank you for reminding me.

i don't have any books for you, /u/skarter, but you're welcome in texas any time. <3

EDIT: actually, this has been on my reading list for some time, but i haven't gotten around to reading it. supposedly, it's pretty good.

u/Bank_Gothic · 18 pointsr/texas

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry for little bit of culture through fiction and Texas by James A. Mitchner, which is technically still fiction but is really just factual history communicated by narrative.

I can't recommend these highly enough. Not only do they capture Texas perfectly, but they are highly enjoyable reads.

Edit: Also, skarter, thanks for taking an interest in Texas.

My dear friend, one can learn a lot about a culture by their history of food. Texas is known as a BBQ state. What you may or may not know, is that Texas was once part of Mexico and there is a Mexican influence, it's known as Tex-Mex. There is a guy named Robb Walsh who has written two great books on each topic. What I like about each book is they have recipes but they also have details history about how and why, with small stories about regardless of differences in color, culture or class, everyone loves great food.

I would suggest the following books for you to read:
Legends of Texas BBQ and The Tex-Mex cookbook

My wife was given his first coloring book as a gag gift last year along with a printout of some of the best Amazon.com reviews

My personal favorite: I didn't know how well I'd enjoy this book, seeing as how I only have white crayons. But, as it turns out, that's the only color required! Magnificent!

As a recent transplant, I listened to Lone Star Nation (the 2004 book) on my 3 day drive down here last year, and became interested in the Birth of Texas. I like the state and find myself wanting to learn more about my new home. It's got a slew of lesser known, but great actors, such as Crispin Glover, Jake Busey, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, as well as more well-known actors as Kris Kristofferson and Ray Liotta.

I take any historical fiction with a pillar of salt....especially coming from the network that gave us 'Vikings'.

Still, this might be good. Is this on anyone else's radar?

You can see a 2-minute trailer here.

Good one, leftoid.

I bet you get AMPED at the thought of calling republicans anti-science/christians dumb.

WHAT YOU WON'T READ IN YOUR "ATHEISM RULESZ" BLOGS:

Human development starts at conception; it's an established biological fact.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_development_(biology)

>Human development is the process of growing to maturity. In biological terms, this entails growth from a one-celled zygote to an adult human being.

http://www.ehd.org/science_main.php?level=i

>The dynamic process by which the single-cell human embryo (called a zygote (zi’got),1 becomes a 100 trillion-cell (1014) adult2 is perhaps the most remarkable phenomenon in all of nature.3 We invite you to join us as we review the beginning of this remarkable process.

>Long before we are born, most body parts found in the adult and all body systems are present and most routine body functions are operative.4 By studying human development from fertilization to birth, we will see these body parts and body systems emerge and learn when many routine body functions begin.5 Human development is a continuous process beginning with fertilization and continuing throughout pregnancy, birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and into old age.

#1 selling Embryology book

>Literally, embryology refers to the study of embryos; however, the term generally means prenatal development of embryos and fetuses. Developmental anatomy refers to the structural changes of a person from fertilization to adulthood.

MORE

>"Development of the embryo begins at Stage 1 when a sperm fertilizes an oocyte and together they form a zygote."
[England, Marjorie A. Life Before Birth. 2nd ed. England: Mosby-Wolfe, 1996, p.31]

>"Human development begins after the union of male and female gametes or germ cells during a process known as fertilization (conception).
"Fertilization is a sequence of events that begins with the contact of a sperm (spermatozoon) with a secondary oocyte (ovum) and ends with the fusion of their pronuclei (the haploid nuclei of the sperm and ovum) and the mingling of their chromosomes to form a new cell. This fertilized ovum, known as a zygote, is a large diploid cell that is the beginning, or primordium, of a human being."
[Moore, Keith L. Essentials of Human Embryology. Toronto: B.C. Decker Inc, 1988, p.2]

>"Embryo: the developing organism from the time of fertilization until significant differentiation has occurred, when the organism becomes known as a fetus."
[Cloning Human Beings. Report and Recommendations of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission. Rockville, MD: GPO, 1997, Appendix-2.]

>"Embryo: An organism in the earliest stage of development; in a man, from the time of conception to the end of the second month in the uterus."
[Dox, Ida G. et al. The Harper Collins Illustrated Medical Dictionary. New York: Harper Perennial, 1993, p. 146]

>"Embryo: The early developing fertilized egg that is growing into another individual of the species. In man the term 'embryo' is usually restricted to the period of development from fertilization until the end of the eighth week of pregnancy."
[Walters, William and Singer, Peter (eds.). Test-Tube Babies. Melbourne: Oxford University Press, 1982, p. 160]

>"The development of a human being begins with fertilization, a process by which two highly specialized cells, the spermatozoon from the male and the oocyte from the female, unite to give rise to a new organism, the zygote."
[Langman, Jan. Medical Embryology. 3rd edition. Baltimore: Williams and Wilkins, 1975, p. 3]

>"Embryo: The developing individual between the union of the germ cells and the completion of the organs which characterize its body when it becomes a separate organism.... At the moment the sperm cell of the human male meets the ovum of the female and the union results in a fertilized ovum (zygote), a new life has begun.... The term embryo covers the several stages of early development from conception to the ninth or tenth week of life."
[Considine, Douglas (ed.). Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia. 5th edition. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, 1976, p. 943]

>"I would say that among most scientists, the word 'embryo' includes the time from after fertilization..."
[Dr. John Eppig, Senior Staff Scientist, Jackson Laboratory (Bar Harbor, Maine) and Member of the NIH Human Embryo Research Panel -- Panel Transcript, February 2, 1994, p. 31]

>"The development of a human begins with fertilization, a process by which the spermatozoon from the male and the oocyte from the female unite to give rise to a new organism, the zygote."
[Sadler, T.W. Langman's Medical Embryology. 7th edition. Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins 1995, p. 3]

>"The question came up of what is an embryo, when does an embryo exist, when does it occur. I think, as you know, that in development, life is a continuum.... But I think one of the useful definitions that has come out, especially from Germany, has been the stage at which these two nuclei [from sperm and egg] come together and the membranes between the two break down."
[Jonathan Van Blerkom of University of Colorado, expert witness on human embryology before the NIH Human Embryo Research Panel -- Panel Transcript, February 2, 1994, p. 63]

>"Zygote. This cell, formed by the union of an ovum and a sperm (Gr. zyg tos, yoked together), represents the beginning of a human being. The common expression 'fertilized ovum' refers to the zygote."
[Moore, Keith L. and Persaud, T.V.N. Before We Are Born: Essentials of Embryology and Birth Defects. 4th edition. Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders Company, 1993, p. 1]

>"The chromosomes of the oocyte and sperm are...respectively enclosed within female and male pronuclei. These pronuclei fuse with each other to produce the single, diploid, 2N nucleus of the fertilized zygote. This moment of zygote formation may be taken as the beginning or zero time point of embryonic development."
[Larsen, William J. Human Embryology. 2nd edition. New York: Churchill Livingstone, 1997, p. 17]

>"Although life is a continuous process, fertilization is a critical landmark because, under ordinary circumstances, a new, genetically distinct human organism is thereby formed.... The combination of 23 chromosomes present in each pronucleus results in 46 chromosomes in the zygote. Thus the diploid number is restored and the embryonic genome is formed. The embryo now exists as a genetic unity."
[O'Rahilly, Ronan and Mller, Fabiola. Human Embryology & Teratology. 2nd edition. New York: Wiley-Liss, 1996, pp. 8, 29. This textbook lists "pre-embryo" among "discarded and replaced terms" in modern embryology, describing it as "ill-defined and inaccurate" (p. 12}]

>"Almost all higher animals start their lives from a single cell, the fertilized ovum (zygote)... The time of fertilization represents the starting point in the life history, or ontogeny, of the individual."
[Carlson, Bruce M. Patten's Foundations of Embryology. 6th edition. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1996, p. 3]

ABORTIONISTS ADMIT TO KILLING

Bask in your ignorance, leftoid.

Either stop talking about shit you don't about and go back to reading your "ATHEISM RULEZ, BITCHES!" blogs, or open up a biology book and get enlightened.

It's been over a year since this article was published, and I haven't heard of any other of Anderson's wins while prosecutor being re-evaluated... though I can't imagine WilCo's DA office is going looking for convictions to rescind.

I haven't heard of Anderson getting shot in the face or having molotov cocktails thrown through his living room window, so that says something positive about us as a society. Morton has written a book that's gotten some great reviews and is on my 'to read' list.

what an interesting contribution to the conversation.

but , really, this is a well know historical fact. the democrats reorganized themselves in the late 80's a a centrist party.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1137278641/ref=rdr_ext_tmb - you can read the book by the guy who organized it if you want. the democratic party today are far, far, more to the right today than they were a few decades ago.

I have that waffle maker too, it's great. Here is a link for anyone who is looking for a good Texas waffle maker!

I can understand that, somehow, unexplainably, the Texas shaped waffles just taste better. I'll agree it's not logical, but it also seems to be true.

Wow, you're so wrong that you managed to piss off both Gustavo Arellano and Rick Bayless in one sentence. That's a pretty big feat.

u/rlanthony · 3 pointsr/texas

Just get yourself one of these which will fit nicely in the outside pocket of your luggage. Now you have two options:

1) Unplug their waffle iron and plug yours in, or

2) Get a couple scoops of batter in a coffee cup and go back to your room and make your waffles

Texas, by Michener. Its enormous, you can read it on the plain on the way over here.

Also see Lone Star by John Sayles. Its the best, most realistic depiction of modern (1996) Texas race relations and politics I can think of.
