I picked up a book called "A Short History of the Netherlands" by Pjan Rietbergen the last time I was in the Netherlands. It gives an overview of Dutch history from prehistoric times up to the modern period. It provides an overview of the history of the Netherlands, discussing the general trends, important people, and events, but it doesn't go into great detail. It also has some nice pictures to make it visually interesting. It's a great way to familiarize yourself with the big picture and then choose topics to dive into if they interest you.

It doesn't appear to be available in the US/Canada (other than rather expensive used copies), but it may be worth picking up in a bookstore if you travel to the Netherlands. I got mine from the Broese Booksellers in Utrecht, which has a decent selection of English-language books, but I imagine it (and similar books) are available in other bookstores as well.

The other book by James Kennedy looks good as well, although I haven't read it.

By the way, if you are at all interested in learning Dutch, I recommend picking up a few Dutch children's books to read. I picked up some in the 8-14 age range, which fits my language abilities quite well.

Forget software! That's only helpful for a first few words (A1).

For anything higher, you'd want to get a good grammar book (like this one and a language learning book. I used 'Taal Vitaal', but that's for German-speakers, which mean I can't really recommend one for English-speakers.

Maybe you can even do a language course. I always found them to be too slow for me, so I stopped and learned the language using books.

Good luck and have fun!

P.S.: If you're planning on working in the Netherlands, learning Dutch is probably one of the best things you can do. As you've probably seen in the two years you were in Utrecht, you can come by with English only, but you never get to dive in and not be regarded as a foreigner.

Also having a native-speaker around you to practice with helps a lot.

As an IT guy myself, look into industry certs. My field is mostly server-related sysadmin stuff, so I'm not sure it works in your field though.

For example, for my field, you could just order a book like this for $40, and when you've read it, done examples/excercises on VMs to the point where you're confident enough, just go take the exam for $150.

After that $200, you can be a Microsoft Certified Professional.

In terms of knowledge, these certs aren't walks-in-the-park, that's why they're valuable on a CV, but if they're in a field that you're already knowledgeable about, then just getting that already-present knowledge certified shouldn't be too difficult.

And they are great for CVs, because that one line on the CV mentioning the cert, it summarizes an approximate amount of skills and knowledge that you have, and suggest a minimum amount of intelligence and trainability. In that sense, it's similar to a degree.

I am a bit late, but I would highly recommend James Kennedy's A Concise History of the Netherlands (https://www.amazon.com/Concise-History-Netherlands-Cambridge-Histories/dp/0521699177)

One of the best books on Dutch history I know.

Have you seen the shit they feed American children?

Cheese in a spray can?

There's also "Cheez" Whiz, which as I understand it cannot legally be called Cheese. And that's under our incredibly lax food regulations.

Neon-Colored Ketchup?

So it most certainly does not sound disgusting from my perspective.

Looking forward to it!

She might enjoy this by the way (and maybe you would as well). http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Comics-The-Invisible-Art/dp/006097625X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398072838&sr=8-1&keywords=understanding+comics

It doesn't look like much but it is a really intelligent book about visual communication and a bit of art education as well.

Marks and sparks' own brand. I keep the English breakfast as a supply at home. I don't drink tea, but other Brits seem to agree it's good enough.

If not, there's the expat shops if you visit the Hague. Kelly's is the one I use. Everything has a premium though.

Amazon always has stuff

The author of this article, Russell Shorto, has a special interest in the Netherlands and has written a lot on the subject. I recommend reading his book Amsterdam, A History of the World's Most Liberal City as well. It's a good read, well researched and not so much a history book but actually more of a philosophical essay on the Netherlands' central role in the development of modern liberalism.

"How to cook everything fast: a better way to cook great food" van Mark Bittman.

You have three months, should be doable esp. if you have serious background knowledge.

Check here for the requirements: http://www.boswell-beta.nl/vwo/chemistry
They are also on the ccvx website in English.

This boswell beta course seems to use https://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Chemistry-You-Lawrie-Ryan/dp/0748752978 as the textbook, so maybe that's something for you.

You could translate some exams of previous years from Dutch to English. On ccvx there is also an old exam in English.

I have no idea why you need this for studying medicine, seems to me that a biochemistry course would be much better, but OK it's their decision.

No stores I know of have the album for sale. I did find it on Amazon.de, but it seems you've set your sights on an expensive album. Prize on Amazon.de is 168 EUR for a new CD and 92 EUR for a secondhand CD

Couldn't find any legal download versions though.

Do you just want to listen to it or purchase it to support them? I think I've found something, if you just want to be able to listen to it.

I used Astra Razor Blades 100. It was very good for multiple shaves even.
