I have what I would consider an abnormal setup and not ideal but it works. My long term goal is to use Synology RackStations, probably the RS10613xs+ or whatever the current model is by the time I can afford to move to that system and have a nice cold basement to put them in. Mainly because you can attach multiples of them together and each one holds 10 drives while only requiring 2U of rack space each.

My current setup uses a Mac mini at the core and three Drobo 2nd Gen via FW800. The Drobos are slow but have been running perfectly over many years now. I'm going to swap them out with Drobo 5Ns this fall. My main reason for going with the 5N over the 5S is two fold. First, I want to be able to take one of them with me up to a lake for a week each year as they make the perfect little Plex servers on their own. Secondly, my two roommates are Windows users and prefer SMB shares while I prefer AFP shares and OS X Server still doesn't share perfectly enough for my likes. Beyond the Drobos I have an old PC box running Windows 8 that has all my old 3.5" drives in, tied together using Windows Storage Space mainly because I wanted to play with the feature. I also have various standalone drives connected via USB.

If you want to checkout what my server looks like here is a current photo. You can also see my status page here.

It shows the current weather for my location, bandwidth in/out for my entire apartment, ping from me to the shitty TWC node, status of all my services, current load of the server (yes I know load measured in % is goofy but I like it), storage capacity of all my drives so I know when to move things around or free up space, and either what's currently being played by anyone using my Plex Media Server or the most recent movie releases from my library as eye candy in the middle. It's a responsive design that should look good on almost anything and I have the source freely available on github if anyone is interested.

Don't worry about charge. It should be small enough being only audio.

The Amateur Marriage is a great novel by Ann Tyler she might like and its good and long at 9 cds!

This American Life is pretty good too. If you're outside N America you might not be familiare but its a great show with stories and reports on a different theme every week. I've kept the best of the last few years.

If you are a Brit by any chance I have a lot of R4 comedy like Stephen Fry, Old Harry's Game etc.

FYI I got a lot of this from thebox.bz but you'll get thrown off for having a terrible ratio if you try and download a lot without uploading. Having said that its a great place for UK radio.

I've watched entire movies when I was younger on an ipod nano 3rd gen. The resolution was okay for the screen size. It was nice for sitting in bed or on trips when I didn't have any other devices that could play video (except obviously my PC which isn't mobile). But that was before tablets and smartphones were getting popular so there's definitely better options now.

I'm not the guy you're responding to, but at $99, here's Amazon's cheapest 3 Tb external:

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB3000100/dp/B00TKFEEJ4/

Although if I were you I'd pony up the extra $18 and go for this one:

Not only do I have more confidence in WD over Seagate, you also get an extra 1 Tb for that $18. Then again, if you don't care about brand, you can get 4 Tb for only $10 more:

Or you could go nuts and get 5 Tb for $129:

How good is the Pi compared to something like the Micca Speck, or other media players like so?

u/JewBacca420 · 3 pointsr/torrents

Well there is 4,339 movies that are in 1080p which are the ones I want. On average a movie is about 1.8GB. That totals to about 7.8TB. I have two of these 5TB external hard drives. They're plugged into a computer I use as a Plex server which streams to my Roku.

What groups are better?

Something like this would work fine. Very easy to setup

Aw darn. I had the same problem before, but I found a way around it with my Mac. If you get desperate, you can grab an HDMI cable and one of these guys and hook it up to your TV that way, and play media with VLC. It works nicely for me actually, and everything is full resaloution. Only downside is that you don't have a lot of remote functionality and have to control it through your laptop/computer.

I hope this helps!

And they make 7200rpm ones as well. Like I said, $49.99 on amazon right now. Https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_t1hhybT3F4BA3

Hands "RAID processing to the CPU" crap, wow really. had not idea that is a thing with the PCIe RAID adapters. And to think, I was looking into them earlier. thanks for that heads up. in this case the storage unit I am looking to get requires you to set the RAID at the storage unit before connecting to any system. 2-bay storage I am currently using the same one now.

Existenz is a perfect example of this. For the longest time it was only available on a 3 movie BD and the quality was abysmal. Then it got a stand-alone release and somehow they managed to butcher the video even more.

2.4 GHz works best over long ranges.

5.0 GHz, while faster, is only for short distances.

So depending on how far away you are from the router, this could explain the loss of internet on 5.0 GHz.

Also, try using a wired Ethernet cord. This will give you the max speeds your ISP allows. They are cheap on Amazon, 50 ft for 10$.

Is x264 a .mkv file? I have an older network media player Micca 350 that will play anything I throw at it except some of the newer .mkv file types.

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB4000100/dp/B00TKFEE8K/ref=lp_595048_1_21?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1462291477&sr=1-21 , the one i saw was in costco on sale. You want to look for "backup" or "desktop" in the name. They need an external source of power but are way cheaper than the plug and plays.
