> I don't know, I think that a Phillip campaign would be a bit too much like a faction unlock for Wrath of Sparta.
Except that Macedon is actually relevant and the introduction of the Macedonian pike phalanx which was a huge game changer.
> Phillip unified Greece, but there are dozens of national unification figures throughout ancient history. Alexander took the empty promise of a frontier warlord and conquered an empire that held nearly half the world's population. The diversity I'd worry about isn't necessarily cultural
On the back of Phillip's brilliant restructuring of how Macedon, and subsequently the world, fought. I read a really good book that made a strong case that Phillip was actually the true military genius behind the Macedonian empire and Alexander, though still brilliant, mostly just rode the coattails of the army and infrastructure his father created. When you think about it, Phillip was the grand innovator and Alexander just took it and used it to its full extent. I also tend to think Phillip, if he hadn't died so soon after conquering Greece, could probably have mirrored Alexander's conquest of Persia.

You're just in luck, with black Friday around the corner there are a lot of sales going on for this kind of stuff. I'll tell you about mice since I've been looking at it myself recently.
Cheap gaming mouse
This was my first gaming mouse and is amazing value. I ordered it, used it for myself for 2 years, then gave it to a friend, he used it for 2 years. I saw it yesterday and it still seems to be in good working condition.
Higher quality gaming mouse on sale
This is a great mouse and the one I'm currently using now. Has way more features, and has competition in mind, in fact I've actually seen it listed as being used by professional gamers in several games. I can't vouch for longevity as I've owned it for less than a month now, but it is almost 50% off for black Friday.
Between these or whatever other one you choose I'm sure he will be very happy with it. Hope this helps!
Yes it will. Load times will be long without a SSD but the game will run well all other times and its super easy to add a SSD later if loading drives you nutty. The CPU, its actually quite OK, functionally equivalent to a 6400 (just different integrated graphics, which you wont use).
This may be more balanced for total war https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HNBLHAA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_yGE0xb5JXPYWC but I don't know your monitor resolution you will be playing at.
While building a PC is fun for some of us I don't think the gained value (not much usually) is worth the extra effort/stress for most people.
Hmmm well to me, in my readings (MA in archaeology, Sassanian landscapes, work as a edit: consultant archaeologist these days) that much of the intellectualism that the Caliphate is credited with is derived in fact from their converted East Roman/Sassanian bureaucrats, who while helping to administer this new empire continued on with the Eastern pursuit of science/religion/philosophy, without the successful integration of these people into the Caliphate (ie the Mongols, who slaughtered the entirety of Abbasid Baghdad, wiping out a great center of intellectualism) I doubt the Ummayads would have maintained an intellectual tradition, being the dour, hardy, barely literate desert warriors that they were at heart...they seemed to be far more interested in their palace/political worlds then their intellectual life...

For more about the time period read the book romance of the three kingdom https://www.amazon.com/Three-Kingdoms-Chinese-Classics-Volumes/dp/7119005901/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 or try watching the 2010 tv show Romance of the three kingdoms its really good if you can deal with subtitles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcZ2zq82ebA&list=PLQgby8Rb0ImEP4108x04Feg2dBvuDADJG, there is also some youtube videos from kings and generals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOGkH_8K_xg, Three kingdoms oversimplified by Oversimplified https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=26EivpCPHnQ. Cody Bonds channel has overview of all the starting characters in the game with some historical context heres one of them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZOfQAAnSKU I'm sure there is a lot more other could suggest.
Does this laptop look like it can play Total War games effectively? I'm mostly interested in the new Three Kingdoms game and the Total Warhammer games. Looks to be a pretty good deal, and I'm thinking about taking advantage of it!

The best book I recommend is specifically called "Roman Battle Tactics" which comes from Osprey Publishing. The book comes in a short digestible form with great insights and graphics on the basic tactics used by the Romans during the late Republic and early empire.
https://ospreypublishing.com/roman-battle-tactics-109bc-ad313-pb
I would also recommend the book "In the name of Rome" by Adrian Goldsworthy. This one is definitely longer but focuses specifically on the great generals throughout Rome's history and the ways in which they wielded their armies.

In the Name of Rome - Adrian Goldsworthy
This book gave a lot of interesting insight into the thought processes and decisions of many of Rome's greatest generals and I found it an enjoyable read.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/World-Warhammer-Official-Encyclopedia-Best-Selling/dp/1560251719
Completely worth it, I bought it before Warhammer 1 came out and it's such a lovely read. Excellent artwork.
If you go on amazon you can get a hard copy of Napoleon and Empire combo with all dlc, you can activate it on steam too using the product key from the case.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Empire-Napoleon-Total-War-Collection/dp/B0041G5SD8
I recommend both games as they are both brilliant games that you should play
Ah got some sources here if you like:
I don't know if anyone else is confused as I was, but it seems like preordering from amazon is cheaper, gives you a physical copy, still gives you Pontus and Greek DLC, still gives you the game through Steam.
Actually, you can get it on Amazon here, if you want a physical copy and here, as a download for a pretty good price.
Go for the Moss Roberts translation if you want the physical book - it's the classic best modern translation of the novel.
However, in 2014, a new translation was done which supposedly made it even more readable for modern audiences - however, I do not have a copy of this so I cannot attest to its quality (link below to the 2014 translation):
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0804843937/?tag=tuttlepu-20
Rome 2 is more like a 100% price increase rather than 50% off. Rome 2 Emperor Edition is now supposedly "on sale" for $30...but before those DLCs came out, Rome 2 Emperor Edition had been around $15 for the last 3 or so years.
According to this price tracker on the price of Rome 2 on Amazon, Rome 2 hit $30 back in January of 2014, and $20 on May of 2015 on Amazon 3 years ago. And this is Amazon, which usually sells games at higher prices than STEAM. Then you see this huge spike in price around late fall/winter of last year due to the new DLCs.
https://camelcamelcamel.com/Total-War-Rome-2-PC/product/B00BQZ5EWW
And according to this price tracker on the price of Rome 2 on STEAM, Rome 2 first hit $15in November 2014 - which is 3-4 years ago. So according to this one, Rome 2 has actually been on sale for $15 for 3-4 years.
https://steamdb.info/app/214950/
You may need steam to play it, but it might not be the cheapest option. It's also a very large game (33GB I think) so if you have a slow internet connection or download caps, you'd be better off getting it on disc. If you're in the UK it's on Amazon for £25.
I'm reading Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of An Empire by Simon Baker right now. It's a great book!
http://www.amazon.com/Ancient-Rome-Rise-Fall-Empire/dp/1846072840
The one I'm currently reading is 2500 pages long and the translation is beautiful.

Guys............................the next tuesday(26º)Omnibus of Thanquol goes on sale....................PROMOTION?
LIKE GOTREK AND FELIX?????????
AKA LINK: https://www.amazon.com/Thanquol-Boneripper-Warhammer-C-Werner/dp/1781939888/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=thanquol&qid=1574164226&sr=8-1
I'm really enjoying this one - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ancient-Rome-Rise-Fall-Empire/dp/1846072840
Currently reading The Poison King in preparation.
Great read for anyone who likes Pontus and Mithradates
Yeah you don't want a basically modified Wrath of Sparta campaign and there's references to Egypt in the Illiad, so they'll need to do a lot more work. Sagas should be big not small

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1788301951/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0#customerReviews

It really is fantastic, and the ending and twists....Oh man its only 240 pages but YOU have to read this. The descriptions of the battles really makes you feel like you're fighting a RII siege battle.

Also please feel free to leave a review
Surely you can spare 14 pounds for both?
I agree, they were forced to join the League of Corinth after the battle of Megalopolis. But for some reason historians don't include Sparta.
A cool side-note;
After hearing of King Agis of Sparta's defeat by Antipater, Alexander is said to have quipped:
'It seems, men,' he announced, 'that while we have been conquering Darius, over there in Arcadia there has been a battle of mice.'
Lol
I've been reading this book by Peter Green:
http://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Macedon-356-323-B-C-Historical/dp/0520071654/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=&qid=
It's really good, I recommend you read it if you get the chance.
I've brought a few steamworks games of Amazon and they all work fine. If you scroll to the bottom of the Amazon page it states: Additional Information
Requires Steam account for installation and activation.
The important bit of information:
> If you're thinking of getting Shogun 2 and/or Fall of the Samurai, wait until tomorrow both will be $7.50 on Amazon.
(The Amazon sale is going on now.)
If you wouldnt mind to pay a little extra, I would rather get this laptop https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTHLX8C/ref=dp_cr_wdg_tit_nw_mr - as for your laptop: CPU is okayish, about 15% better than older i7 7700HQ, but GPU is not prolly going to cut it. You will be able to play on high/medium with FPS cap IMO.
well now that the sale has started here it is
£109.99, wow.
That is so overpriced is almost gross.
When the base game is only £30 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-War-Rome-II-DVD/dp/B008H1QPEE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368106492&sr=8-1&keywords=rome+2
Dude just buy a retail copy from Amazon, it's only £30 and comes with the Greek City States.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-War-Rome-II-DVD/dp/B008H1QPEE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372768648&sr=8-1&keywords=Rome+2
Oh no, definitely not. The box art is absolutely amazing too.
£25 on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-War-Rome-II-DVD/dp/B008H1QPEE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377635822&sr=8-1&keywords=rome+total+war+2
the prices change but £30 is what I bought it for :P
https://www.amazon.com/Three-Kingdoms-Chinese-Classics-Volumes/dp/7119005901/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=three+kingdoms&qid=1558541748&s=gateway&sr=8-4
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/7119005901/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
still $60 in the US
It's £30 on Amazon.
I bought a box copy of Shogun and I was able to install off the DVDs.
I think this is a box copy of Rome II. http://www.amazon.com/Total-War-Rome-2-Pc/dp/B00BQZ5EWW/
Fall of The Samurai is also $7.49. Gives you a Steam product key.
http://www.amazon.com/Total-War-Shogun-Samurai-Download/dp/B006WD9H9Y/tag=childsplaycha-20
I usually get mine from zavvi (free UK deliveries!), and you get a hard copy, unlike going through steam. It should be noted, almost everywhere it will cost the same, within about 0.01 of a penny;
Zavvi, £29.98
Amazon, £29.99
Game Stop, £29.97
Steam, £29.99
So, Game Stop from those options is cheapest, and you get the Greek Culture pack etc. with all of them. It is about the pre-purchase nature of it, not who you buy from.
