I work in a toy store. Here are some of the things I would recommend for an 8 year old boy (I live in australia, so i'm just posting links from amazon because I figure your american):

Spirograph kit

Origami aircraft

Paper craft robots

Crystal growing

Magic kit

Ukelele

Nanoblocks

If you've got the time to sit down, build and play with him:

Catapult kit

Qwirkle board game

This is the 1998 version.

Here's Teresa modeling the 2008 I Can Be Space Camp version. A bit more pink than I'd like, but this doll was designed to actually go out into pretend-space in her spacesuit, so that's cool.

Here's a newer book--"A Space Camp Adventure"--that I wasn't able to find a date for, but the cover features the contemporary brunette Skipper, who I believe was released in 2010, so it's not that old.

Here's the current astronaut fashion pack, I Can Be Astronaut. Notice how it comes sans doll and without any tie-in to the US program.

I am just making a guess, but there was probably a larger space-themed expansion planned that was never produced when news of the space program shutting down came. It makes sense with the timeline since the book probably was designed and printed just before the news broke. At least there is an astronaut outfit available in stores, but I agree with you that the 1998 doll and her outfit is fantastic.

They’re called “Ooglies” and are made by playmates.

I got one when I was younger and I love it!

They come in multiple styles and colors.

That looks like the hot wheels police pursuit Chevy Tahoe, but the side graphics are scratched off. Its only available in a 5 pack. Hopefully this helps.

Nerf guns, cheap or real. Guaranteed fun.

Source: I'm a boy. An old boy, but I still play with nerf guns.

I know they make 'em, I bought my kid a spongebob camera a few years back that did just that. He loved it.

I'm guessing you are talking about the 4 in one tool sets that would work as a sander, lathe, jigsaw and drill press. I found a few links by earching on Google for "4 in one woodworking tool toy"

Amazon has a modern version: here

This looks more like the classic version I remember: From Mindware

The game Spot It is a huge hit with the 10-13 year olds in my life (and the parents when we're slightly drunk). They also make a kids version that may be better for 5-10 year olds. About 10 bucks.

I had an awesome Mars Attacks gun that made interesting noises.
