I use Sennheiser HD 280 pro.
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280-Pro-Headphones/dp/B000065BPB

why I like them:

  • Sound isolation. They sort of clamp onto your head, blocking out the world, which helps a lot because you should be mixing in your headphones.

  • Frequency response is flat. So you can tell the difference between a pounding track and a super compressed really loud track. Cheaper headphones like to reproduce the bass too loudly, which is really frustrating when you need to know exactly how your track is going to sound when you drop it.

  • Portable; they fold up, and fold flat (good for fitting into a messenger bag, or a backpack).

  • The cord is really really long

  • Durable, especially if you take good care of them. I've had mine for almost 2 years and they still work great.

  • Cheap! so if you do lose them or break them you can just buy another pair. or you can throw them into the club if people love you (also comes with 1/4 and 1/8 plugs so you don't have to buy an adapter)

Wow I didn't realise it was that hard to find. I've noticed there are some cheap used CDs of it around - the amazon marketplace might be a good place to look.

Here's what I get searching for it in the UK

Never thought BT would let it go out of print, I must admit. I really like that album too, although I think Movement in Still Life, the follow up, is better.

Awesome, nice find. I didn't even know about the first volume of Once Upon A Night. Looks like both volumes are pretty solid.
vol. 1
vol. 2

Personally use these 3, amazing for music and great quality - have used the first 2 for nearly 4 years, have had no issues so far!

I strongly recommend A Trip in Trance 3 Disc 2. It's just banging tune after tune. This person was nice enough to upload the album on Youtube; my favorites are Track 6, Track 10, and Track 11.

I can't really find a mix by Pleasurehead going by the name of "The Trance Files II", but are any of these close to what you are looking for?

Hope this helps. Good luck on finding that tape!

Consider these for excellent bass response when you are in the market for headphones again...

I love the fact that these are cheaper than Beats Pro, but they undoubtedly sound 1000x better.

I'm reading Mike Senior's Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio to figure out how to get my tracks to sound professional and a big theme is setting up the right monitoring environment and a consistent workflow. I have a habit of mixing while I compose rather than waiting to add effects later. While my friends really like my arrangements, my tracks always seem to fall victim to muddiness.

Do you have any tricks that you employ to keep a workflow organized and sounding nice while at the same time promoting the 'finish your tracks' mentality that you've already mentioned?

EDIT: Grammar...

chicane - thousand mile stare came out this month.
kaskade - fire and ice came out in october.
above & beyond - group therapy was june 2011.
and of course, there's asot 2012, though i think the best asot is 2008

just to name a few. enjoy!

If you haven't read Moby's book I highly recommend it. Basically he talks about his life in the 90s. Very interesting to hear what music production and touring was like during that time.

  • Tranceport - Paul Oakenfold

  • Most of the Euphoria series of compilations

Trance was a big thing before the vocals became a part of it (even subtle ones>) The stuf from '96-2000 was some of my favorite Trance ever produced. That being said, it's grown and evolved from there while not abandoning the foundation entirely.

I actually feel that it's possible to enjoy Tranceport (and similar mix albums from that 5-year span) as much as some of the weekly broadcasts today.

I have a pair of Etymotic plugs that have worked pretty well for me over the years. Plus they're pretty cheap so it's not too bad if you lose them.

Great track. Found the full version on Amazon MP3 listed as a "radio edit" along with the actual radio edit, for anyone looking.

The Tiesto one is definitely from Tiesto in Concert 2004 (I've got this actual DVD and love the Adagio for Strings bit the best)

The Armin one could be from his Armin Only 2006 set like Chicane has mentioned but it also could be from his Armin Only - The Next Level DVD which was recorded in 2005 but released in 2006.

There's also and "Extendeds" release, it doesn't have voice over and it's longer mixes of the songs. And it has the entire story as a single track at the end if you still want to hear that.

But you said CD, that's pretty old school. If you have Amazon Prime you can listen to the non voice over version here.
