Very late to this, but I am literally in the VERY beginning stages of wanting to do this as a hobby. I've always felt I had a decent ear for music, and constructing playlists, but I figured I could have more freedom as far as creativity is concerned by learning to dj. Eventually would love to learn to produce my own beats, but definitely want to spend a while learning how to mix, and getting familiar with beat matching, etc. I know it's a super long road, but this was truly inspiring to read! I've been in desperate need of a hobby/passion that I can actually look forward to getting into after I leave my desk job and after lurking on this sub all through college, I feel that I should have started this like...yesterday. I probably will never open up for a big artist, but would love to play to groups of friends when I'm on vacation, and post mixes. Would love to hear what your future plans are, and do you eventually plan on getting into a software like Abelton with a super steep learning curve, but tons of freedom. Any equipment/accessories that I should look into, or should I be good with just this and my laptop to start? Excited to finally get into this and eventually share some mixes with my friends.

Most DAWs like Ableton and FL don't really require an equipment thanks to VSTs and plug-ins (been using nothing but my laptop's keyboard as my main input for years now), but it does help if you have a controller to work with.

If you're new into the production scene, I would recommend this. It already has a few drum pads there, so you won't need to spend more money on another drum pad. Borrowed it from a friend a while ago, and it's pretty good for its price.

That one works with pretty much any DAW, but it works best with Ableton. Another alternative would be this. Best thing about this one is that you can practically bring it with you anywhere (perfect for the road)

If you only want a drum pad, get this. It's the most common drum pad out there, so if you need any tutorial on how to use it, you won't have a hard time finding one.

If you're looking to start making mixes, VirtualDJ can do the trick in teaching you the basics of live mixing on a standard format. Virtual DJ did a great job at showing me all of the basics back when I didn't have a physical board (I assume that's what you mean by mixing manually), and made it much easier to streamline into using Traktor.

That being said, a physical board is worlds better simply because you can use both of your hands and do more than one thing at once. It also better separates and visualizes the actions you do with actually mixing the music vs. selecting a song. My friend just bought this board which integrates with VirtualDJ for only $150 if you're looking for a quick start with something physical. This gets the job done, but the quality is lowered because the audio output is only available through your computer's audio interface. He just DJ'd a party on Saturday with it and the quality was notably lower. Also, I wouldn't dream of showing up to a venue with this equipment.

Depending on your long-term goals with mixing, Traktor's an interesting one. I found traktor to be my best options from a cost standpoint and honestly, personal feedback from other DJs that I was talking to who use the equipment. I love how my S4 gives me 4 decks with standard output routing, but a lot of bars/clubs/venues don't have traktor equipment with them (they mostly have pioneer equipment). During the finalists competition, I was the only one who brought my equipment because I was the only one using traktor, while other DJs brought just their computers.

VirtualDJ is free. I'd give it a shot.

For listening to music, the M50x is pretty, pretty darn flat to the point that your average listener will really enjoy listening to the music. However, I think it's worth pointing out that they aren't truly flat, there is a little bit of a bass boost. But I think that's actually what you want if you're just listening to music. If you're looking to go into production, you'd want to look into the ATH-M70x, which is truly flat. The thing is though a lot of people report the M70x sound kind of tinny, which is because they're actually flat. The M50x sounds better listening to music because there's that subtle bass boost you're used to when listening to music. That being said, I have the M50x and I love it.

tl;dr M50x if you want to listen to music, M70x if you want to produce music as well.

If you have a little extra change to throw around the Bowers & Wilkins C5 Series 2's are sick af. I opted for earphones instead of headphones for convenience as I like my music on the go. Simply put, they're incredible. They have this interesting little loop created by the audio cable that keeps the actual earphone safely and comfortably in your ear. Quality build as well. That said, I know you care about the sound (as you should), so I'll get to that. Good news is the sound is phenomenal. Bass is thick and strong without overpowering the highs and mids. Indeed, the highs are crisp af. I wish the mids were a touch better, but it's not really noticeable to be honest. Anyways, hope this was some help. Happy hunting fam.

Hey dude, if you want to PM after this - please do. Aside from touring, teaching people how to DJ IS what I do - it is literally my other job. The other thing is there is no way that this thread alone, no matter how detailed, will answer all your questions effectively.

First things first, do not buy some shitty controller - you want to learn if DJing is something you actually want to do first and make a decent investment.

The first investment you CAN make is in a solid 32-64gb USB stick.

After that download Rekordbox - the universal dj cue point software for all things Pioneer. This software analyzes your music for things like BPM and Key. It will also allow you to place cue points on your songs to mark things like "where the song should start" and "when i should start to mix out" or "other mix point to play the second drop instead". Rekorbox offers a paid version you can use with their controllers but don’t make that investment until you have decided and are ready. The absolute MOST important thing about DJing is knowing your music, knowing it back and front, knowing every beat, bar, and phrase - this program helps you fast track that knowledge.

I’m starting with these two things because, in theory, it is all you need to do exactly what we are doing on stage right now. Pioneer is the club standard when it comes to DJ hardware, every club we've ever played at uses Pioneers and literally nothing else. This is also the cheapest investment you can make to see if DJing is something you want to do.

Use Rekordbox to add all the music you want do DJ into a playlist and see what the BPMs are, use RB’s GRID system to lay down perfect BPM grids on the songs and count out the number of bars from the beginning to the drop, know how long every section of your favorite songs are, see if all their BPMs are even in the same range. YES the song has to be the same speed as the other song to mix it. In general choose songs that are no more than +/- 4bpm away from the other track.

I could literally go on for hours there is so much to learn, just message me and we’ll get into it.

are you talking about like the tip? it comes with a variety of shapes and sizes of tips but the ones that came on mine fit me perfectly. ive had shures in the past and love these. fit any size ear, roll it down then hold it in your ear and it expands to fit it. also you could try these. if you order it on amazon, you have 30 days to return them so you could try it out, say they are broken and return them. done that a bunch with other stuff.

u/TheAberzombie · 2 pointsr/trap

While earbuds can sound pretty nice and are easy to carry in your pocket or whatever. Over the ear head phones will have much larger drivers that have the ability to really push out some bass. Generally speaking, for the most part the bigger the driver the more powerful the bass. And always buy the best quality you can afford. Buy once, cry once.

Edit: these are the earbuds and headphones I use.

AMEN. I know a lot of people with tennitus and that shit's no joke.

I bought these on amazon and haven't looked back. They work great, don't look goofy in your ears, and the metal case they come in is perfect for stashing party favors...if that's your thing :)

u/ArtOfConfusion · 2 pointsr/trap

It's always a little bit muted of course, but if you invest in a decent pair, it will totally be worth it in the long run. I picked up a pair of these cheap Etymotics, and they've saved me so many times going to clubs, shows and festivals. Of course if a song that you just want to fully "experience" comes on, feel free to take them out, but if you plan on attending a lot of live events in the future, I really suggest you get a pair. You get used to it and your older self will thank you.

In terms of going as a 16 year old, you'll be fine as long as you don't do anything really stupid. The teenagers that annoy people are the ones who think they're hot shit, get in peoples faces, act obnoxious and overdose on drugs because they have no idea what they're doing. Just play it cool, enjoy the music and be considerate and you'll be fine

personally i have a pair of Sony MDR XB90EX earphones that are amazing. They have intense and punchy bass that i have yet to find in another IEM for the same price.

Couple them with some Comply tips and you'll have a mini-rave in your head. I wear them to the gym everyday and I love how hype they get me feeling.

These are great cheap-mid range phones but I'm sure someone here can help you with more expensive cans

u/oIcaruso · 1 pointr/trap

Well, since you already looked up the Schitt, might as well get both the Magni and Modi.

Magni($99) - Modi ($99)

For cans, it depends. There's gonna be a lot of different talks in regards to what sounds best. My advice would be to visit some stores, and give them a test with the songs you listen to.

Check head-fi for some comparisons and what not. A quick google:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/719539/best-bass-hitting-headphones-under-300-preferably-unamped

I currently own the : ATH M50x, VModa M100, HD650. I prefer the bass on the vmoda more than any other cans i own atm. But my endgame would be the Fostex TH900.

Good luck kiddo. also, visit headphones

I can give a positive rec for Ear Peace. I use them for drumming, but also shows. Sound way better than the foam ones I'm used to. Good on ya for protecting your ears! I'm tryin to listen to dope beats as a grandpa as well

I made one for this years halloween, and while I can't speak for OP on how he made his, I can tell you how I made mine. You can buy the mask from Amazon then spray paint it gold. Then, buy a small black shirt to cut up. Cut part of it into a square and super glue it to the bottom part of the mask. This is where it gets tricky. I used pieces of the black shirt to cover the eyes on the inside of the mask, but it's incredibly hard to see out of when I'm not in a well lit room. That one you might have to figure out on your own. Then you just need a black hoody with a white zipper as OP does in the picture and the hat, which can be found through an easy Google search. If you're like me and live in an area where a lot of parents have younger children and don't want to offend hundreds of trick or treaters, you can opt for a more family friendly snapback like I did. It's a sick costume, I actually just got back from wearing it somewhere tonight and while a lot of people didn't necessarily know who I was, they thought it was creepy as hell and loved it. Good luck if you decide to make one :D

These are a good middle ground for if you're not trying to break the bank, but also retain great audio quality. I can't go to a show without these anymore, and trust me when I say they don't degrade the quality of the show at all. Actually improves it imo because I hate having my ears blown out.

u/elcielo17 · 3 pointsr/trap

I know I'm late to the party but these Downbeats earplugs were the best investment I've made. There was a show in Atlantic City in some nightclub that RL performed at, being in the would have been unbearable if I didn't have the earplugs. Front and center for most of the show and I heard absolutely fine. Ear protection is serious

u/steadylit · 1 pointr/trap

I use these, they're awesome and they keep great sound quality

u/Raiyanmagician718 · 3 pointsr/trap

i have the klipsch pro media 2.1 and the sub is great, the bass shakes my whole house and they are definitely worth the money. http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

u/Lakerz4life · 1 pointr/trap

I just use foam earplugs that I get from work but I always see people saying good things about Etymotic earplugs

u/Brandinoftw · 1 pointr/trap

I have these in my room and they bump pretty loud for the price if you place the sub in a corner

u/Fuck-Yo-Couch · 1 pointr/trap

I use Audio Technica ATH-M50Xs. Get them from Guitar Center. They do price matching (just find a cheap pair on Amazon, Ebay etc) and a one year full replacement warranty. My headphones "break" once a year so I've had a pair for 4 years and only paid once.

Edit: Here is a pair of the M40Xs for $80

u/DatKaz · 7 pointsr/trap

Earplugs, absolutely earplugs. It will be really loud, and earplugs are a saving a grace. I use Etymotics, and I swear by them; helps hear the actual music that gets drowned out by the bass, and cuts down on ears ringing for the next day or two.
