This is the laptop I’m buying. It has a current gen i7 processor (important for heavy projects). It has a ssd for fast start ups. It’s cheap as hell too. I currently have the 2016 version and it still good but this one has upgraded specs I couldn’t pass up.

Always have your files on a separate hard drive as a backup. Years of work can be lost in a flash. Get a standard external drive and keep a backup of all your files there.
To expand the space on your computer I would get one of those USB 3.0 cruiser flash drives

This stays in the USB port without Velcro, etc. I don't like the idea of velcroing a hard drive to my computer, too much can go wrong.
