Probably about a million, but I don't have any really good ones on hand at the moment, but it's worth looking into. The guy was pretty out there, but (maybe not surprisingly) had (IMO) a very dark view of american consumerism that he expressed in a very ironic way.

Excerpt: https://kottke.org/10/10/andy-warhol-on-coca-cola

Discussion of above: https://www.phaidon.com/agenda/art/articles/2019/january/31/what-andy-warhol-really-thought-about-coca-cola/

From the horse's mouth: https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0156717204/ref=nosim/0sil8

You gotta think about it. Wait, is it really so great that we all drink the same coca-cola? Huh? Consider that at the time, soviet conformity was a source of great fear for Americans. What does it really mean that even the president can't get a "better" coca-cola... makes ya think. That is what is good about Warhol. His prints are what they are, the philosophy behind them is the actually interesting part. The art itself is worth a lot mainly because he was the first person to come out and do that sort of thing.

You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed reading those texts. There's always something to be gained by reading the mythology of a culture as long as you see it as allegorical.

The Panchatantra and some of the stories in it may already be familiar to you. They're very much like Aesop's Fables.

Getting to Shaivism... generally when you look at Hindus, they will either be worshippers of Shiva (the god of destruction) or worshippers of Vishnu (the god of preservation) each with further sub-sects. From looking at Wiki, I see that Kashmiri Shaivism is a sub-sect. If you're looking for a starting point, you should check out Devdutt Pattanaik's Shiva - An Introduction.

>because they're conditioned

This is false. This book explains why. It's part of an evolved mating strategy.

>these women then hold men to the similarly high aesthetic standards.

There is no evidence to back this up. All the evidence points to women holding men to different standards than men hold women. This doesn't mean that one sex is better, just that their standards are different. I don't think I need to go into the differences because they're well known.

Boiled down, you're saying that somehow (you didn't say how) women place a higher emphasis on their own visual presentation, which, I agree with. You then claim that they expect this level of visual presentation from their mates. This is false. I'm not just using that word as a way to disagree with you. The science, and there is a lot of it, does not even remotely back up that claim.

If you're interested, read that book. It's about the best summary you're going to get and you won't be disappointed.

Okay. Now I'm genuinely interested in your success. I've found you a how-to, which is basically 'boil the hide', but still worth the read:

The hide, which you'll need very little of, can be found here:

You're all in at $35-ish, assuming you have a working cooking pot, a strainer, and access to a stove.

I want pics when you're done. In return, you get a fatherly 'I'm proud of you'.

The book The Cross of Christ by Anglican priest John Stott really details the earliest forms of worship by Christians and it included crosses and the sign of the cross. Also, he goes through the NT and it's various uses of the word cross and finds MANY instances of it being used in praise of God and Christ. https://www.amazon.com/Cross-Christ-John-Stott/dp/083083320X/ref=sr_1_2?crid=N69E8L1AUC4U&keywords=the+cross+of+christ+by+john+stott&qid=1569817335&s=gateway&sprefix=the+crooss+of+chris%2Caps%2C237&sr=8-2

This is The Raft of the Medusa, and it's at the Louvre. I recognize it because I read the most fascinating book about the shipwreck and the painting: The Wreck of the Medusa by Jonathan Miles.

u/dukeofgonzo · 14 pointsr/trippinthroughtime

Woops. Thought it was The Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt.

Edit: My sloppy guess also came from a book. https://www.amazon.com/Master-Thieves-Boston-Gangsters-Greatest/dp/1610396324

Add me to the list of kids with this picture hung in their room. Here's what I found:

Hans Zatzka/H. Zabateri, Postcard, c. 1918.

Here's a print example on Amazon.

The world is getting less violent, it's mostly the media that makes it seem worse. Here's a book on it: https://www.amazon.com/Better-Angels-Our-Nature-Violence/dp/0143122010
