I just installed arch linux over osx and am now happily single booting linux. :)
Software related you can install a customizable window manager, the ones that Sylinn recommended are fantastic options.
Hardware related, I think that the best purchase I have ever made, hands down, is an ssd. It has made things SOOOOOOO much faster, here is what I got (the 240gb version):

http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-HyperX-2-5-Inch-SH103S3-120G/dp/B007R67FNA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1396322635&sr=8-4&keywords=kingston+ssd

It is super easy to install, though they are a little pricey its totally worth it. I have a macbook pro 2010 model, so I also replaced the CD drive with my old hdd with the help of a hard drive caddy like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Unibody-MacBook-SuperDrive-Replacement/dp/B0058AH2US/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396322738&sr=8-1&keywords=macbook+pro+caddy

Which was a little harder to install, but not impossible by any means. And its cheap!

If you are so inclined, Samsung just released a line of very affordable ssds up to a terabyte in size for only like 500 bucks (I say only, but for a terabyte ssd thats unheard of). Macs are known for being non-customizable, and apple takes pride in that, but with the help of a very small screwdriver you at least have access to the harddrive, memory, and CD superdrive, which is as good as most other laptops.

Lol, blank keycaps are pretty popular in the mechanical keyboard community.

The Planck is pretty DIY (i.e. you order the components of the site, then assemble them - includes soldering). The cool thing is the firmware is customizable (so you can change the key mappings) and the board is pretty hackable overall (so you could make it work with bluetooth if you got a little Bluetooth Arduino module).

If you don't want the bother of building the keyboard or don't have the time, I'd recommend looking into a few 60% keyboards:

Not wireless:

  • Keyboard Paradise v60 - I personally own this keyboard, and can vouch for it. Very compact, slightly not standard key locations for escape and arrow keys, but you adjust quickly.

  • Poker 3 - Very popular in the mechanical keyboard community.

    Wireless

  • Royal Kludge - 60%, doesn't have Cherry MX switches (the best quality Keyboard switches out there). Still worth checking out.
  • Varmilo VB87M - TKL, but bluetooth. Only a few days left to purchase on Massdrop.

The mechanical keyboards subreddit wiki has loads more options to choose from. These are just ones that I could get quick access to on amazon and are keyboards I've bought or looked at.

thanks you. I did not know lua before i started awesome. So the first time i've most learn with the rices of u/elenapan and the awesomewm api together, it's really hard to done something with only the API man, it lack a lots of exemples.

Else to learn lua, i've read the best book on the subject :) https://www.amazon.com/Learn-Lua-iOS-Game-Development/dp/1430246626 the first 100 pages are great. You can find it for free on some site.

There are many others nice sources too like to : https://github.com/deficient/battery-widget/blob/master/battery-widget.lua , https://github.com/streetturtle/awesome-wm-widgets , https://github.com/elenapan/dotfiles , https://github.com/vicious-widgets/vicious

I bought this but it's for the Mac years ago. Pretty sure there's a Windows version as well. And I see a newer generation out as well which looks pretty slick in black.

Initially I watched an episode of lunduke hour that featured a freeBSD dev https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cofKxtIO3Is

I like the documentation available to help me learn. I got my hands on the FreeBSD handbook and can't wait to get into the design and implementation text book, Addison Wesley, 928 pages. https://www.amazon.com/Design-Implementation-FreeBSD-Operating-System/dp/0321968972/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_0/143-0574353-4482766?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I appreciate the focus on servers and research computing that is BSD's strong suit.

I see that, I suppose I just read it wrong. I found syntax here, and the best textbook my classes used was Code Complete by Steve McConnell. Good book, though huge and often too in-depth. But really, there are more than enough resources online, no need to buy a book. The benefit of it is that the textbook uses C++ to describe more advanced programming practices. It's a focus on how to program well and professionally, rather than just teaching basic syntax

All the code is up on github here, so feel free to poke around. If you have specific questions about the architecture or design I wouldn't mind answering those, but I don't have the time to walk you through everything line-by-line. If you need that kind of instruction I would refer you to the fantastic open.gl tutorials for OpenGL related stuff and a project oriented tutorial-style book like this one for Java for general programming concepts if you're just getting started. I'm not familiar with anything similar for C/C++ but perhaps someone can chime in with suggestions.

I used a C720 as my daily driver for my last semester of college when I got fed up with my old MacBook Pro. With a lightweight Linux (I installed Arch and kept it lean) I was able to get decent performance, even ran games like Gone Home and Fez on it. I was mainly doing python development, for which the c720 was perfectly adequate. If you want to use it as your primary, I would suggest upgrading the storage using an M.2 replacement drive. Also, look into enabling legacy boot forever by removing a write a protection screw on the motherboard.

Nice! I've been toying around with the idea of getting a Chromebook to dual-boot Linux on (via SD card, so I don't have to fuck with chrooting into my main distro every time....) for my travel machine, but I'm still unsure of whether or not I really want to. If I do, it's probably going to be [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/HP-Chromebook-Graphics-P0B78UT-ABA/dp/B010C93X5M/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1482991098&sr=8-7&keywords=chromebook+4gb+ram) or something...

Anyways, looks great OP! :D

At Home: 2 x 2340m : amazon link. Pretty good monitors. They have small borders and look really nice. The glare bothers me though.

At Work: 2 x HP Compaq LA2306x and two 19 in Dell monitors. I love the two HP monitors, most of the time. They handle lots of light well but the viewing angle is pretty bad in one direction.

u/thenayr · 2 pointsr/unixporn

It's been working pretty well for me, granted I'm running on a Macbook Pro touchbar and have an extra portable usb-c monitor that I take with me most of the time, so I've usually got enough pixel room to work with.

A Nixeus MODA v2. By no means a high end mechanical keyboard, but I still love it.

Nice work, how was installing manjaro on a hybrid laptop?? I have one similar but only pop os! worked kinda good switched back to not using Windows 10, only using him for a bit of gaming.
