PART TWO -- wrote this before seeing your VIVE arrives... basically tomorrow

get the Deluxe Audio Strap. this is a MUST HAVE.

https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-Deluxe-Audio-Strap-pc/dp/B06Y2GDXMC/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=htc+vive+deluxe+audio+strap&qid=1555922928&s=videogames&sr=1-1

i don't consider this an accessory...this is just absolutely CRUCIAL. installation took me ~15-20 minutes after watching a youtube video on how to install as the instructions that ship with it are ...lacking. there's a video of a german guy who shows you have to install it easily.... this strap adds not only great sounding, adjustable and comfortable headphones but (more importantly) will secure the HMD in a way that makes the default strap seem laughable. this deluxe strap allows more comfortable wear of the HMD, better cord management and eliminates the need for supplying your own audio (be it earbuds or headphones) while i ordered all of these "accessories" and received them before my VIVE, i decided to try the original / shipped strap before installing the "deluxe" and words can't describe the difference in fit, comfort, and how great the audio from the adjustable integrated earphones sound. the headphones are able to "snap" in an upright position when you are either removing /storing the HMD or just need to lift one up to hear something someone is trying to tell you...

-=-2nd suggestion for "accessories"-=-

probably most important second only to the deluxe audio strap.... get these tripods. you don't want to mount your lighthouses to your wall... with these tripods you are able to place your lighthouses without drilling/mounting. it is way worth the investment as the stands are very secure, adjustable and the lighthouses screw directly into them. no other parts needed, just these two stands... you'll realize that you might have to fine-tune/tweak the placement of the lighthouses slightly, and with these stands you are able to make adjustments (not only in placement but with the ball/swivel you are able to change the angle/pitch etc.) which you couldn't do if you mounted them.

-=-honorable mention -- not necessary but recommended...-=-

when i purchased my vive i made sure to get a nice stand to set the HMD/controllers on... (...i went a bit overboard with other accessories and for brevity i'll only mention two more accessories that i think you should pick up) here's the HMD/controller stand i purchased for when either storing the vive or to set it on while taking breaks/cooling off... . it isn't an absolute necessity but it gives it a nice place to rest the HMD/controllers during breaks between play (you will sweat a lot even in a cold room, i know i'm out of shape but with titles like sairento, sprint vector, space pirate etcetc i take breaks just to let my face breathe and cool off.) this beats just setting the HMD on the ground or on a nearby table which could easily fall off.... your call, but -- again, protect your investment!

"Skywin VR cable management system"
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0733NN7G8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

-- these are simply pullies that attach to your ceiling, allowing the cable to be out of the way of the ground... personal preference here but i find these very useful (especially with titles where i'm moving around a lot... sairento, gorn, QuiVR etc) ... protip: i went to walmart etc, purchased -several- packs of 3M "Command" large picture and frame hanging strips 16lb "large picture hanging strips" and have them all over my ceiling at different strategic places (depending on if i'm playing a title that requires my entire room i.e having to move my bed for the max. play area, or if i'm playing a title that requires only the smallest room setup or even for sitting) so using the 3M strips instead of the adhesive that comes with the pullies in the kit, i'm able to switch around the location of the pullies to suit each above situation...also, they remove without damaging your ceiling... if you have any questions on this just message me and i'd be happy to elaborate.

last accessory suggestion -- after watching videos of people punching holes in their walls etc. i decided to grab these protective frames which have saved my walls and possible harm to my controllers when demoing my vive to friends (even though when demoing i always have chaperone on "beginner", floor bounds on etc) it -never- fails that they will try to throw a grenade and hit my ceiling, swing a punch while playing Gorn and instead of my vive controller slamming into the wall, the cage around the circular top part absorbs the impact and deflects/redistributes the force from one point of contact to several. just throwing this out there, just in case you or someone you are showing it to will be inadvertently throwing your controller into your wall

I'm not the guy you asked, but I ALSO have the G930s. They're nice, but I won't be buying them again. I find the wireless to be flaky when my wife uses HER wireless headset (another Logitec, but not G930s), and the battery is nearly worthless after 2 years of ownership (though I do a fair bit of gaming, so YMMV). Next headset I buy is gonna be a pair of these bad-boys, and I'm gonna slap some of these on 'em. If I need a mic, I'll grab something like this. Won't be wireless, but I've got a cheap bluetooth headset if I need to move around the house. Since my HMD is tethered ANYWAY, I don't mind the headphones being so as well. :)

Hope that was somewhat helpful! :)

EDIT: OK, so here I am, nearly a month later. My G930s finally gave up the ghost, and I went ahead and bought about what I describe above (haven't picked up a mic yet (doesn't make sense at this point, with the Vive so close), but I've got the Superlux cans and 3rd party earcovers), and I'm LOVING them. Nice sound, though quieter than expected - I've not dealt with anything but USB headsets for a while, so I'm pretty sure I need an amp, which I can't fault them for, I knew it was a possibility going in. In any event, though a bit quiet at this point, it's not to the point of unhearability or anything. I just can't make it annoyingly loud if I want to. I'm also irked at the tiny male jack hardwired into them - I'd rather have a flush female jack, but what 'cha gonna do?

Beyond those two TINY issues (the first is only an issue due to my not realizing they'd need a bit more juice, and the second is annoying, but not at all a dealbreaker), I'm LOVING them for the price. Reproduction sounds pretty good (good enough for mixing with, anyway), and comfort is GREAT (they feel VERY light). YMMV, but I'm a happy camper with my Superlux HD668B semi-open cans (just don't forget the (<$10!) 3rd party covers - they REALLY improve on the default comfort).

EDIT #2: I'm a jackass. I had them plugged into line-in. When I found a second line-in (this one actually labeled and recognized by the OS as a headphone jack), the softer sound issue went away.

Sure I would love to help a fellow CMDR out.

Yes, the game can be quite daunting, it's quite technical to get the hang of 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DOF) of movement. The game now has an updated tutorial that has come a long way in helping new players get to grips with the basics.
There are "training scenarios" like Docking, that help you practice risk free.

Do you need a HOTAS? Well, no, but it definitely helps a lot. You can get by on a cheap one, like the T-Flight https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Stick-PC/dp/B001CXYMFS but you might find that it doesn't have enough buttons. But you can survive on a KB/M or even a controller. Some of the best PVP Pilots use only KB/M for the incredible accuracy.

But if you're going to play in VR more than Pancake mode, I highly recommend a decent HOTAS like the X52 (in game stick is modelled after it). You're just going to have too many bindings to worry about working that KB/M or controller. Not saying you can't, just that a HOTAS with many buttons will be easier to get used to. You can also "Shift-Bind" extra commands in ED, so button combo presses can have different bindings. Like "J" is SuperCruise / Warp Toggle, and "Shift-J" is SuperCruise only. etc.

VoiceAttack brings this game to a whole new level thanks to HCS Voice Packs https://www.hcsvoicepacks.com/
Eli is a right Hoot, but I prefer Verity, voiced by Verity Croft, same person who did the voice for the ED Ships. It's like having an AI Co-Pilot with you, you can issue commands that execute macros for Docking, deploying hardpoints and setting power for a fight, etc. So cool.

If you want to forgo the HOTAS for the time being, another CMDR has just launched a beta for full Vive Motion control of ED ships. Check this out - https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/9fgl8p/elite_vr_cockpit_open_source_steamvr_overlay_with/

Video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU_ak4YdPRY&feature=youtu.be

You should also join the community r/EliteDangerous where there are thousands of CMDRs happy to assist in any questions you may have, and no question is a stupid one, we all had to learn the hard way and the lack of hand holding in Elite has led to the Community picking up the slack in an amazing way.

Cheap tripods are great for traveling, and I've given over a hundred demos with them, but they kinda get in the way, and the larger you make the footprint (to improve stability) -the more they encroach in your play space.

I use these tripods with these swivel adapter things for my on-the-road show. As long as they don't get bumped, you're good to go.

For home, I use This tension rod and this rod mount - you may need a longer rod- I run it from the top of my dresser to the ceiling and the top of my computer desk to the ceiling. The 87 inch one isn't long enough to go from floor to ceiling for me.

As far as other essentials, two of these help with plugging the lighthouses in. An HDMI Extender, Power extender, and a USB 3.0 Extender (those three work perfectly for me) will make your life 100x more easy, especially if your computer isn't directly next to your play space. The extra 10 feet makes a world of difference for reducing tangles, reducing the number of times you have to stop and untwist your cord, and making you not worry about yanking on your computer when you get to the far corner.

Lastly, this wireless keyboard thing will save you from running back and forth from your desktop.

---

As far as sweatyness, I got over the ickyness pretty quickly. My friends have mastered basic hygiene, and face sweat doesn't smell all gross or anything. After each demo, I run the foam under the sink to rinse it off, then dab it with a paper towel and set it on a box fan to dry. It's good to go as soon as the next person is done and I repeat the process. I ended up buying a set of new face foams from the HTC website after I lost my narrow face foam though :(

  • 1st Question - I know you can depending on glasses size
  • 2nd Question - Yes, when you do room set up you could just set it to standing, calibrate your height whilst sitting.
  • 3rd Question - So I haven't experienced eye strain after 3 - 4 hour sessions, but boy does it get sweaty/hot in there. There seems to be a lot of 3rd party foam inserts for the Vive so if you're particular I'd suggest getting one the boast it's ventilation.
  • 4th Question - If you don't want to put holes in your wall for the mounts then get tri-pods. When it comes to cable management you should be the judge, it doesn't bother me but there are plenty of 3rd party cable management rigs.
  • 5th Question - Gonna be honest, there is a lot of crap out there right now. Don't let price tags dictate what you deem to be good either. For instance GORN is awesome. I've played it more than any other game so far and it was free. Raw Data is great, a but steep in price but compared to other content it might as well be an AAA title. REC ROOM (Free) is amazing. I've spent more time with the socializing aspect than it's games (including paintball).

Been hopping back in and streaming it again. Feels really good. ED community is really nice to new comers to and want to help. Forums and the sub reddit are solid places to go if you need more info. Theres also some great tutorial videos made by ED that help wrap your head around some of the bigger concepts of the game.

Its more a space Sim game than anything so be ready to learn how to land properly, launch properly, request docking permission, warp, navigate, shoot. Im still learning but feel free to stop by when i am streaming it again tonight or this weakend and ask any questions.

I would also love to wing with you, its pretty easy to meat up in this game and playing with friends makes it so much better!

Also a budget HOTAS setup that works PERFECTLY with the Vive and ED https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Stick-Pc/dp/B001CXYMFS

If this is painfully expensive for you, I'd recommend getting neither one and waiting. This is early days of consumer VR, and you'll get better headsets for less money if you're patient. If you do go ahead, I assume you've already budgeted any needed PC upgrades to make it run well?

(1) Yes, integrated audio would be nice. The Vive has a headphone jack so it's easy to use your own without needing an extra PC-to-head cable. I got the Koss KSC75 for $15 - very light, excellent sound for the price, and they don't shift around when you move your head. According to rumors the Oculus integrated headphones may be Koss derived or at least very similar, so it should also work well for apps tuned for that.

(2) Up to you if you believe that STEM will have comparable specs, but even if they do end up working well I wouldn't expect widespread support in games and apps for them. You will want tracked controllers, and getting Oculus Touch will probably add a similar extra cost.

(3: Comfort) I get the impression that the Rift is more comfortable if you have the right-shaped head. People with large heads have complained it's not a good fit and that the Vive is more flexible with its soft straps, and it also has alternate padding for different face shapes. The Vive appears to work better with glasses.

(3: Display): The core display resolution and technology seems to be the same. The Vive has a bigger FOV and was measured to be 2.5x brighter, while the Rift has less screen door effect and appears sharper since it shows the same number of pixels inside its smaller FOV. Up to you which you consider more important.

(3: optics): not a big difference here, though it seems the Rift may have worse glare artifacts due to its finer Fresnel rings. The Vive seems less prone to light leakage due to better shielding near the nose.

Overall I think both are fine headsets technically, with slightly different tradeoffs. If you want the maximum image quality for movie watching, consider a Gear VR since that has higher resolution than either of them.

For me, roomscale is the deciding factor - I was convinced this is a must-have as soon as I tried it. The Rift can technically do this, but it's clearly not been a priority for Oculus so far, so if it's important to you I'd go with the Vive which has put a lot of effort into making it work well, including Chaperone and the front-facing camera.

u/noodle1009 · 2 pointsr/Vive

my suggestions:

  1. For room-scale setup, a minimum play area of 2 m x 1.5 m (6 ft 6 in x 5 ft) is required. That's if you're up and walking around. If you have more space, great. If you are going to be seated, you don't require this. Definitely figure out how/where you're going to mount your lighthouses - I'd recommend camera mounts like this for a booth setup.
  2. For your audience, I'd recommend Google Earth VR (it's free and awe-inducing - can be played seated), Tilt Brush (also awe-inducing but room scale), The Blu (solid short demo), Apollo 11 Experience (for history buffs), and Titans of Space 2.0 (can also be seated, and the sense of scale in this one is pretty incredible). As far as games go, I always go to Space Pirate Trainer and Lucky's Tale (via the Revive overlay, free still from the Oculus Store I think?) for people newer to VR. Careful if you don't have a lot of space with SPT, you don't want someone smacking innocent bystanders with a Vive wand.
  3. I'm personally curious as to your ideas to incorporate VR into genealogy. I think the audience of VR enthusiasts here skew toward the gamer, but there's a lot of VR 'experiences' that I believe have only scratched the surface of the possibilities of VR.
  4. Maybe /r/virtualreality/? I dunno, this is as good a place as any I think.

Movable Lighthouse Solution by Mbbobrow

Not a super cheap alternative but I think this should be a great solution for a non permanent low profile install.

Impact Deluxe Varipole Support System - Black (Pair)

$200 bucks is certainly pricy but these look great and should be super versatile.

I did get it on amazon at https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HM4QB0Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I got the 2 pack because I thought I'd want to swap one off for cleaning but it cleans just fine on the headset with cleaning wipes thanks to the material. I can't speak to the other options with 1 pack because those are different manufacturers. I personally found it to not be that much less comfortable. I feel like I don't sit there thinking of it being less comfortable while I'm playing and I thinnk that's when I would notice that comfort the most. And I'm enjoying the FOV more than I think about the comfort even when I'm thinking back on play sessions with it.

u/vexstream · 3 pointsr/Vive

You can get these poles, which are 15$/pop, and just as good, but a little bit shorter.

I also recommend this style of camera mount instead of the solid mount you recommend. Affords you a little bit more flexibility in mounting, these cost quite a bit more, but are way more solid/flexible.

But yeah, these extendable poles are amazing. Super cheap, portable, real easy to use. Plus, chances are you have a local harbor freight, so you can get em faster if you really want to.

u/LamborghiniJones · 2 pointsr/Vive

Buy these lens wipes, I would be lost without them
The microfiber cloth will scrath your lenses if you wipe them dry. And water/iso is not the best soluton either. These wipes have worked wonders for me.
https://www.amazon.com/Zeiss-Pre-Moistened-Lens-Cleaning-Wipes/dp/B00MVR5OD8/ref=sr_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1478016902&sr=8-6&keywords=lens+wipes
Get some compressed air to blow off any debris/dust that collects on the lens, its safer than even wiping with a moistened cloth. Use the premoistened wipes for smudges, and be super careful wiping any dirt/dust off.
ALSO, these are a godsend, but are usually sold out. They restock every week or so:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HM4QB0Y/ref=pd_sim_23_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=FW49RSN822DH182407Z9
These are vastly more comfortable than the ones that come with the vive. They are easier to clean, and they increase your FOV.
Those items I would HIGHLY recommend getting. Including the compressed air, its helpful. Also keep your vive lenses away from any sunlight
Also I would highly recommend over the ear headphones. Adds to the immersion more than you would think.

> How does the camera work on the front?

Works perfect for me! Works 100% when plugged directly into my PC, and when plugged into a 50 ft USB Extender it still works fine but I have to set it at 45hz for some reason or it isn't picked up :o. 30hz does not work and 60hz does not work over my extender, but 45hz works great.

>What good uses does it have?

It makes it extremely easy to tell where you are without taking the headset off. While playing you can enable an "outline" view when chaperone comes up so you immediately know where you are, and what is around you.

> What do you commonly use it for?

Not smashing into shit! It's perfect for any game that asks you to move around a lot, or if you need to grab a drink or something real quick mid-game, and don't want to screw with the headset.

Edit: I forgot my #1 use! Not kicking my cats!

My cats fucking love to sit at my feet while I play Vive, and I check the camera every now and then to make sure no one is on the floor before I start a match of some actiony game :P

Thanks again, your responses, as consistently demonstrated, carry weight.

  1. My PC only has one hdmi port. I'm guessing here, I'll need to purchase a hdmi splitter? - if that's the correct term Basically, the splitter will be a minibox itself with several input/output hdmi ports. This way I can get that other hdmi cable from the pc to my tv. Hoping amazon.com got my back here.

  2. Smart regarding 3D printed enclosure, please report back when you manage to set it up. I am definitely intrigued. Those links are wonderful. Thanks. The second retractable you linked looks real good, the heavy duty in the title is what attracts me. Gives me sense of security for the cables. I might have to get a larger ring to add less friction as the cables pass through and from it.

Regarding ceiling, I live in an apartment, don't want to drill holes up there. I'll look for alternate methods of setting it up and share my discovery here with you guys. Maybe what I find can facilitate mobile as well. Quick thought came to mind. If find a sturdy enough lightstand upto 9-10 feet with some kind of hangover pole think traffic light main pole protruding out the sidewalk, and the pole attached to it hovering over the street, holding up the lights Something like that. Attach one of those heavy duty retractable's onto it.

I use these light stands for my vive motion trackers. I'm thinking something along these lines with the attached pole hovering from the top extending outwards: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HNZJLG4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've been using mine with a 100' extender for a while now. There's a few threads that describe how others have gotten theirs working (I'm too lazy to find them and link them to you right now though). Here is what ended up working for me:

I'm using this extender: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019MADOS8 for HDMI and it works ok. I paired it with the 100' CableMatters Cat6a cable (which I wouldn't recommend, but I cant find the beefy, quality cable in less than a 500' spool!) I ordered two cables and one was defective. It's also a thin for cat6a. Maybe we could get some people together and split up a spool of the good stuff.

I have to power cycle the repeater when I turn on the vive or else it freaks out and displays a broken signal, but it is holding up ok and I think it would work better if I cut off the extra cable length I didn't need and re-terminate the cable so it's shorter (I only needed about a 70ft run).

For the USB, I installed this extender: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013VP3372 but ended up sending it back. It worked, but it couldn't provide enough bandwidth to run the Vive camera along with everything else. Instead, I am just using a passive repeater cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0081LNQR4 which works perfectly fine. I have the 65ft repeater cable plugged into a 16ft non-repeater extension to get some extra length and this works flawlessly, I can even use the camera.

My lighthouses are about 8ft up and 22ft apart (using the link cable) and it all works very well. It did take some trial and error. Here's my advice:

  • Try using your repeater with a shorter cat6 or cat6a cable (<10') - if it works, go and find the best quality cat6a cable you can find and cut it to the shortest length that will work and go from there. It might work, or you might need to find a better repeater. Mine worked fine for video signals even when it didn't for the vive so that's not a great test other than to prove that the repeater is functioning at all.
  • I just re-read your post and see that you are using cat5e - try cat6a if you can, it provides superior range than cat5e. Also, test the cat5e cable you have with a computer (or purpose-built cable tester/certifier if you have access to one) to make sure it works at all. For what it's worth, I'm 90% certain my run wouldn't work with cat5e, it just barely makes it with the cat6a.
  • I'd also recommend testing each (USB extender and HDMI extender) separately so one doesn't create problems for the other.

Honestly, instead of using wireless headphones, I would pick up a pair of Superlux HD668B Dynamic Semi-Open Headphones from amazon. They are not wireless, but they are REALLY comfortable and have terrific sound for the price. I was like you where I wanted a wireless solution for the Vive, but honestly not having to deal with charging a battery and any interference or latency has been an overall better experience imo. And if you are worried about an extra wire hanging down, don't because the 3.5 Male jack is right at the base of the headphone. This allows you to either use the length of the Vives plugin jack to connect the headphones to your Vive OR you can buy a small extension cable for a little more slack. If you are interested in those headphones let me know and I'll tell you anything about them as I currently use them for my Vive as well.

Here is what I am using. Have had zero issues with my setup and is also extremely easy to move and demo at other people's houses. Might have to get more creative if you have very high ceilings or slanted ceilings.

Harbor Freight Support Poles - These work great, they don't support a lot of load, but you don't need it to. They are also half the price of what everyone else is recommending on Amazon.

Camera Mount Clamp - Have had no issues with these, either, and very cheap. They allow you to also rotate the lighthouses in a very large arc depending on the setup you have.

I have had no stability issues; everything is rock solid tracking wise. The foot print is also like 3 x 6 inches on the floor. The low profile pads make it very easy to hide them behind book cases or other furniture as well. And you can get all of it for under $50.

I don't understand why you would ever use tripods, as they takes up 100 times the space and are less stable than the support poles. Good luck on your setup!

EDIT: Formatting.

u/furluge · 2 pointsr/Vive

Why not use the screw? There's tons of clamps with 1/4"-20 thread that are meant to put lights and such onto various types of poles for film and such. I use them myself to mount my light houses onto vertical braces from harbor freight. (They have a smaller footprint than a light stand or tripod.)

Here's some examples of the ones I'm using.
Pedco 1.5 Ultra Clamp

This will grip even onto a very thin pole. For the record I mount them to these poles. Harbor Freight 2 in 1 Ratcheting Cargo Bar

Here's some other excellent multi purpose clamps but they need a ticker pole to mount.

Limostudios Super Clamp It's a clone of the more expensive manfrotto super clamp. They fit on the blue portion of the brace, not the thinner silver extended portion.

These clamps are pretty universal and you can get a number of different attachments for them. You could screw the lighthouse right on there but you couldn't really aim it without a ball mount or you could get an arm like this or this though that second one might wobble with the lighthouse motor. Arkon makes a good very sturdy clamp I've used to mount camcorders on for years though I've broken lots of the quick mounting plates over time. The arm is much stronger than the superclamp arm I showed earlier. There's also small clamps like this one

Also for the thread as someone else mentioned there are adapters. This is likely the adapter you need as that's the other common screw size you see. but I can't really know without seeing the tripod. Personally I prefer to use clamps and mount to poles anyhow, it gives you a lot of mounting options.

The TM 16000 HOTAS - I use this for ED - Super awesome for the price. Most HOTAS are overpriced. This one is fantastic for the cost. TONS of buttons and neat features on the throttle you won't see anywhere else! I love the little throttle finger joystick, it makes for perfect lateral and vertical movements to mix with the joystick movements. The X52 will match the in-game model better, but honestly while in VR and doing stuff you're not going to be starring at your joystick and throttle in-game model...like at all. Best budget HOTAS imo.

Guy with a health issue that brings on long periods of bad fatigue here. Coincidentally I'm entering a new fatigue period today so I feel for you. I'll be back to barely able to play seated games soon.

I own a Vive and its entirely usable sitting down, even in games that don't support 'seated' experiences. Most games use a teleport mechanic so you can just sit on a nice chair and teleport around. Even better if the chair can spin.

No HMD is designed for seated experiences. That doesn't exist anymore as the controller-based Rift no longer exists. The Rift is roomscale now.

I'd argue the Vive is nicer for seated as you can put your lighthouses up and have much more usable space in the room and less occlusion. In a chair you're blocking more light especially if your occluded by a desk. Webcams might have issues unless your placement is perfect. With lighthouse placement 45 degrees down from each corner of the room its pretty much impossible to occlude, even on a chair at a desk.

>Or is it more than Vive can do everything Rift can do, but more expensively?

There is nothing the Rift can do that the Vive can't. Price and FOV is the big differences right now. You can a nicer FOV with the Vive with the stock gasket but it costs more. I'd also recommend the 6mm gasket for the Vive. That raised my FOV considerably. If I use a stock Rift, its like I'm wearing swim goggles. I don't think its easy nor obvious how much a FOV difference makes in VR unless you actually have a VR headset to test. Its not night and day, but its substantial.

The Vive has some creature comforts as well. The built-in camera is especially handy. I can read text messages, see whos calling, see if there's something in room I might step on/roll over, untangle cables, talk to my wife who comes in the room without taking off my hmd and being able to see her an interact normally, etc.

I'd also argue the ability to install the DAS or wireless is a big deal. With the Vive you're paying a premium to buy an expandable platform. With the Rift you get more of a locked down non-expandable device.

>Also, are there enough seated experiences to justify it either way, right now?

I've played many 'standing' shooters on my ass. Rec Room is fun sitting. The content is there if you want it. There may be content you may not be able to play well, but so far I haven't had any issues.

$200 bucks is certainly pricy but these look great and should be very versatile.

u/Fearstalkerr · 2 pointsr/Vive

If I understand correctly, you will either be standing or sitting in the same general location in the room. If this is the case, you will be fine with the light house positions unless when you sit there is something blocking the line of sight to the lighthouse (high backed chair, furniture ,etc). I don't anticipate this being the case as you position them in opposite corners, diagonal from where you generally face so that you can position them to minimize any obstructions.

If you wanted to do a room scale play area somewhere in the room, you would need to move the lighthouses. To do this the best way, get light stands. I got these from Amazon Fovitec Light Stands for this purpose. I have a large room scale play area near my computer. When I want to play DCS or Elite Dangerous, I move the lighthouses around my desk where my HOTAS, rudder pedals and keyboard are. It's a bit of a pain but it's not that bad. DCS is incredible in VR. You will never be able to play it any other way.

General advice on setting up is to follow the directions as it's pretty simple. Main mistake I hear people making is plugging things incorrectly on the connector box (this has cables to the PC, power and the tether to the headset). Have a look for some videos if you are uncertain, that's what I did. Play the free game The Lab as it's a great introduction to the basics of VR and is a lot of fun with some cool things to discover in it.

u/vennox · 2 pointsr/Vive

Just got these Koss KSC75, but haven't tested them all too much.

They sound nice, are light and comfortable and super cheap. Not isolating in any way but I don't have a noisy environment and imho are extremely ugly, but they are just for VR so whatever.

I think I heard/felt the best positional audio in SPT with these today of any headphones (Sennheiser Momentum 2, Sony CD580, Vive Earplugs) I tried with the Vive.

Didn't mod anything just organized the cable a little. When I'm done playing I clip them on the side straps. Would appreciate suggestions for improving the cable mess or a permanent mounting solution.

If you want cheap and good, this combination works well:

Cosmos Black Color Velvet Replacement Earpad Ear Pad Cushion for AKG K 240

Superlux HD668B Dynamic Semi-Open Headphones

Ultimately I decided I like the earbuds routed through the headstrap better, but these sounded pretty good. They are 56ohm, so they will be a little quieter than your 39 ohm LGs. That said, some people are using 250ohm headsets and that has to have a pretty low volume unless you can turn it up high enough in the game.

The cable on the HD668B also breaks away easily if you tug on it and it comes with a nicely sized shorter cable you can use too.

u/Whirlmeister · 1 pointr/Vive

Yes, it comes with controllers.

I found some over-ear headphones were uncomfortable because of the headstrap for some people, but the majority of people I've demoed for have had no problems. On-ear headphones may be a better option, and if its just for you the supplied ear buds are actually surprisingly good.

Depending on your room and whether you are happy to screw the lighthouse sensors to the wall you may need some sort of mount.

I was happy to screw the sensor mounts to the wall at home but I picked up

A couple of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wolfcraft-4042000-80mm-Telescopic-Support/dp/B001BWT2PA/ref=sr_1_2

and a couple of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/MyArmor-Universial-Threaded-Microphone-Motorcycles/dp/B01A6KJDFG/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_2

So I could bring the Vive places with me and demo (without having to screw anything to the wall).

Alternatively if you want to attach the sensors to a bookshelf or similar these are great:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phot-R-Studio-Multi-Function-Reflector-Cameras/dp/B00MR0VPOQ/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_3

I also ended up getting a 3m HMDI extention and a 3m USB extension because my play area is a few meters from my PC and out of the box you only get 1m cables to the breakout box.

I have a Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS setup, it's pretty decent and fits into the budget without losing out on too many features.

The throttle and stick are separated so you have the flexibility to position things where you want them. The cheaper HOTAS setups are usually throttle and stick combined with less buttons, if that doesn't bother you then you can save a bit more money.

T.16000M FCS HOTAS on Amazon

You also have the ability to add rudder pedals if you choose to do so but they are a separate purchase.

Good luck and hopefully you find something soon as it's pretty life changing for Elite and many other flight sims.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/Vive

/u/caulfieldrunner Save up for this. If you can't afford this, just buy one T16000m joystick (got mine for like $35 I think) and use the keyboard for throttle etc. The t16000m is easily the best joystick for the price. A lot of people actually just buy two of the joysticks and play like that. I wanted to have a throttle in case I ever get into a proper flight sim game though. For space games, two joysticks is perfect.

No worries man I had a hard time understanding all this at first too. I thought the exact same thing btw. "I do notice a difference with 7.1 yadda yadda". I didn't understand until I actually got "real" headphones. And its a hard thing to accept especially if you have 7.1 headphones next to you that you've spent money on and like. No one wants to think they made a bad choice and I'm not saying you did necessarily, thats just what I went through. But anyway.. the same rule applies to music recorded in binaural (in the 2nd link... pay close attention to what happens to the audio when the singers swing behind you at 1:05, turn off 7.1 again).

You have two speakers on those cans. Its literally impossible to improve upon that unless the source itself was recorded with binaural in mind. You can't make two channels magically turn into 7 in real time. And when you have multiple drivers inside your headphones your ear can't make the difference between speakers that close together. And also you end up having multiple bad smaller speakers capable of audio that isn't that good anyway. So what's the benefit? So again. Until you try actual quality headphones get the "I definitely like 7.1 in stuff" out of your head because I'm telling you once you try good ones you're going to be amazed. What you're likely hearing is an EQ when you turn on 7.1 mode. It emphasis the lows and highs to make whatever you're hearing sound 'better' but its fake quality.

I promise that if you messed around with an EQ on "nice" headphones you'd also make those sound better than they did before too (assuming you like screwing around with EQ, a lot of audiophile people think its blasphemy to screw around with what the artist originally intended or to screw around with the design aspects of headphones. I personally think its not a huge deal but I also don't like messing with anything)

Tldr: What you're likely hearing is an EQ with 7.1 mode and you can do that with any pair of headphones. If the source isn't binaural you can't make it binaural by flipping a switch. You're turning on an EQ.

Honestly the only way to test it for yourself is to try a pair of good headphones for the first time. And luckily enough you don't need to spend a ton of money to try your first real pair. I got my fiance the Superlux 668b's this Christmas. She previously had wireless Logitech headphones. They're gathering dust now... The Superlux headphones are amazing for the price. Even I couldn't believe the quality. Years of conditioning has taught me that "good" headphones needed to cost a lot. But nope... Just damn good marketing from the people that make crap. Thats all it is.

Edit - If you do get the Superlux I'd also get replacement earpads as the ones they come with should be considered place holders. Also the video you linked is mostly all true.

For that kind of distance, you'll likely need to transfer over Cat6- for both HDMI and USB. In order to do so, you'll need something like this for HDMI: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=21609 and something like this for USB: https://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-4-Port-Extender-Ethernet-GUCE64/dp/B013VP3372/

Note- Your existing Cat5 might work for the USB connection, but for HDMI you'll definitely need Cat6.

Also, at 50' you can get away with a good active HDMI cable from the likes of Monoprice. That is my current setup- 50' Active HDMI, and 50' Cat6 USB (using the USB adapter linked above). I will likely be moving to the Cat6 HDMI adapter, as I do have conduit from my office room to where we do VR, thus I can run everything through the walls.

If you haven't yet, I totally recommend trying a third party face pad. I got the 6mm "wider FOV" pad from VR cover on Amazon. It's made a world of difference for me. The FOV is a little better but for me the difference is really in comfort and cleanliness. My biggest problem with the original vive foam pads was they hold sweat and could get hairs in them, and due to their foam like nature it was very hard to get any hair out. This would cause me to always look fore any loose hair on the lenses before I put the headset on and they are hard to get off. Now that I have a new cover it personally feels better on my face, cleaner in general, allows me to have a wider FOV (enough to occasionally see the edge of the screens in the direction of my nose), and is machine washable if I wish to wash it. These are the ones I got.

Nice to hear the old foam smell brings back memories though, maybe I should try my new one again to see if I get any of that good old day 1 nostalgia.

For under $50, you can't go wrong with:

Superlux HD668B headsets. They are very lightweight, and from every single review I've read online or seen on youtube, they compete with $150-$200 studio headphones. In music, the 'treble' can be a little rough for some people, it can be very crisp. But in gaming, they've said this isn't an issue and makes for an INCREDIBLE soundstage in-game. Also, they come with a small 3ft cable AND a longer cable; the 3ft cable is perfect for jacking into the vive.

Everyone suggests You also pick up Velour replacement pads as the pads that come stock leave a lot to be desired and may be uncomfortable. Luckily, placing them both in your Amazon cart brings your total to JUST AT $49 and some change, which nets you FREE SHIPPING as well. So you're better off grabbing the pads :) /thread

May be overkill, but I got a 2-pack of these "3rd Hands" https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000067S12/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

along with these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PICAE4C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I preferred them over traditional tripods because these don't take up any space at the base, which was prime real estate in my limited area as it is. These are super easy to use and reposition anywhere. Because they use tension between the floor and ceiling, they are super secure and totally resistant to vibration.

I only wish they came in black so they were a little less obnoxious, but I'm just using my smallish computer room here and not crazy concerned about the aesthetics. They're both snug in the opposite corners of the room. No sticky adhesives, holes, screws, and I have some handy tools now if I ever want to like build a house or something. :)

Even with the deluxe audio strap, the Rift is just much more comfortable in my opinion. Try them both out at stores and really focus on how much you like each HMD and controllers. Since you'll be seated and will have a small play space, the differences in tracking size will not affect you. The Rift also comes with tons of free games, many of which are meant to support 180 degree configurations like your own. Most VR games can be played seated though, you'll just be at a disadvantage when it comes to hiding behind cover or ducking. You'll have better support for your arms though, I know several people who play the multiplayer shooting games sitting down for that reason.

I highly recommend Elite Dangerous plus a HOTAS (ThrustMaster T-flight is only $50), it'll scratch that Star Citizen itch for you. For space nerds, docking in a 50 km space station in VR for the first time is a religious experience.

Comes with one of each. It’s what I have. I don’t sweat a whole lot during VR but I use the 6mm and it doesn’t seem like it’d be an issue if you’re sweating. I’d just suggest not sitting there for a few hours pooling up sweat. Take it off every once and a while and dry it (and your face) off and get back into it. You can try both out and see what suits you best and what you feel most comfortable with.

Edit: this one will actually give you a 6mm and an 18mm as opposed to 14mm. I don’t think that’s a huge deal though in your situation.

get it on sale. I'd recommend getting the Horizons expansion too but you could wait until the next sale and you'll have plenty of hours of content. Once you try it in VR, you will want to buy a HOTAS. The Thrustmaster X is only $35, works great. I played with an xbox controller for a while and its definitely better than kb/m.

u/wnepnq · 1 pointr/Vive

I would recommend this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0X3NL5

I bought it to use with the wireless adapter and it's working perfectly.
The best thing is that it fits securely and firmly in the belt case that comes with the wireless adapter's original power bank and it has 2 output ports.
It has a quick charge 3.0 port (which I use to power the wireless adapter) and a PowerIQ port which I use to charge the controllers when their battery is low.
I first start with the HTC power bank and when it discharges, I use the Anker and start charging the HTC. By doing that and using the PowerIQ ports to charge the controllers (alternating them while using Anker Power Bank), I managed to get 18h+ of playtime on a gaming party with my friends.

Ultrawings has a virtual flight stick (its only control scheme before it added HOTAS support).

It is capable, but it is simple, and it is still occasionally frustrating to use even though it is only a little more than the virtual stick.

My belief is that a virtual HOTAS is possible but that it would not be very pleasant.

Unlike steering wheels (I still want a wheel with modern force feedback for under $200, sigh), a good entry level HOTAS is affordable. The HOTAS X is $50 on Amazon.

Those who are accustomed to super high end sticks would object to it but I've found it a great entry point for Elite, and likely far superior to a (nonexistent) virtual HOTAS.

u/CMDR_Woodsie · 1 pointr/Vive

Wanted to check back in and report how this setup works.

So I went with the route of HDMI for now, using this cable and this USB extender over cat5e.

Everything works wonderfully, haven't tried camera yet, but latency is unnoticeable for first tests, and I am incredibly happy.

I'll be ordering some bulk cat6 to try HDMI extender boxes with, and I'll report my findings later on.

I appreciate the help, again, this might work well.

I used the tape that I used to hang my curtains (much heavier than the vive sensors), but it's really hard to get it to feel secure because of the small amount you can actually apply to both the sensor and the wall while it's plugged in. My final solution has been these: https://www.amazon.com/CowboyStudio-Photography-Light-Stands-Cases/dp/B001WB02Z4

They are definitely high enough, and if you buy the little ball adjuster thing that is the most commonly purchased item with those stands you'll be set. They are safe and secure and ive never had a tracking (or line of site between the two sensors) issue like I was having using the curtain tape.

u/Bambambm · 1 pointr/Vive

So I only know a few of these.

  1. I'm not sure. I only use hdmi to hdmi

  2. If you don't want to cause too much damage, my best suggestion would be to get 2 tripods with heads that can angle downward. In my own room I had to re-position the lighthouses multiple times, which meant multiple holes in the walls.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HNZJLG4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012FTXOW4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Are just the tripods I use now.

  3. 2m x 2m is enough for roomscale, however I don't know if I would consider it a decent roomscale experience, I myself run a 3.8m x 3m space and I even feel like that is pretty small. I also cleared out all the furniture possibly blocking lighthouses, so idk about that.

  4. Your computer monitor/TV will always display the view that you see as well, even if a game does not open a separate window, steam VR has a setting to 'show mirror' so other people can see what you see.

Other than that, hope you get the answers you want. Cheers! (The Vive is awesome though!)

There are floor-to-ceiling poles that extend and stay in place with a very small footprint, but I think they're generally more expensive. You'd need to get a tripod pole mount to stick onto them, as well. I haven't researched them, but you would want something like these poles and these mounts.

I personally am opting for the light stands that /u/libertytoast posted, they seem to be the best bang for your buck, and then you just need a ball-joint attachment for tilting the sensors. I got a more heavy duty one, here.

u/VeteranKamikaze · 1 pointr/Vive

I swung by Harbor Freight and picked up two cargo/support bars (sufficient if your ceilings are ~9' high or less) and went on Amazon for two camera clamp mounts.

Basically when you wanna get the Vive going you extend both the poles and tighten them up between the ceiling and floor, clamp on the camera mounts, screw on the lighthouses, plug them in and you're ready to play. After the first time setup/breakdown shouldn't be more than a five minute process and the pole packs down to 3¼', so you'll be able to stow it just about anywhere.

Credit goes to /u/stapit for the idea. Of the solutions I've seen for non-permanent mounting this seems like the best for ease of setup/breakdown, stability, and price.

Edit: Also wins on footprint, it takes up much less floor space than a tripod and since it sort of wedges between the ceiling and floor it's arguably more stable, even if you bump into it it's unlikely to fall.

u/jfalc0n · 2 pointsr/Vive

OK, definitely go for the Deluxe Audio Strap. It really is something the Vive should have shipped with out of the gate, but I imagine they didn't have a "one-size-fits-all" design ready, so they winged it with the Velcro straps.

However, once they completed it, they monetized it and the rest is history. However, if you're not adverse to pulling bits and pieces off your HMD, get it first.

This Thrustmaster HOTAS is very popular (I have one) and it doesn't break the bank. It's a pretty solid bit of gear too.

They're fairly cheap, good sound and just have a jack sticking out the left headphone so the vive audio can plug straight in.
My vive experience improved greatly after getting these due the improved comfort and ease of use.

I have the Thrustmaster Hotas X - it's $30-45

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-X-Flight-Stick/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481583783&sr=8-1&keywords=thrustmaster+hotas+x

It doesn't have as many buttons as $120+ HOTAS, but works well for E:D if you configure it to your liking. I haven't tried using "shift" commands to increase button count (ie map one of the buttons to shift so different combos with that button give you more mappings) or using Voice Attack software to do voice controls, but I hear both of those options make using this HOTAS even easier.

Basically, if you don't want to shell out more for a HOTAS - get this one or find a higher end one for sale used. Good luck, commander!

i bought my key off of greenmangaming.com on sale for $14 dollars.

maybe they've changed since then but I definitely got it 3rd party.

this is the HOTAS I use. It works amazingly well. it's a perfect price/quality tradeoff

You can use the headset with wireless adapter in what I call "wired wireless mode" by plugging USB power into a QC 3.0 capable charger - I have a 5 meter USB cable for that and it works fine. Here's the charger I use to charge controllers, trackers and battery after VR sessions. The QuickCharge port can also power the wireless adapter. You may want to check your phone charger for support of QC 3 too - some phones support it.

As for power banks, HTC ones are trash. They give around 2 hours of play and then charge for like 7 hours because they don't support QC input at all. They are that bad. On the upside, they can charge from any USB port.
Luckily, you can use any QC 3.0 capable power bank. I personally use Anker PowerCore Speed 20000, gives around 5 hours of playtime, fits into HTC clip (although it sticks out as it is much longer), and has QC support for its own charging, so it charges in around 6 hours too. Having two of these, you can theoretically swap them for unlimited wireless playtime. You can also charge one controller at a time from its second USB port.

I have a usb extender i bought on amazon that works perfectly.

My setup goes PC -> ethernet extender box 1 -> ethernet extender box 2 -> link box.

Never had any issues getting it to work. Additionally, I run a TPcast, and a Steam Link. All of this pipes into my living room. It's a really fun setup, actually. The Vive is wireless and plays via the steam link on my TV. Great for parties.

u/3dmesh · 1 pointr/Vive

Depends on the VR cover mostly. I recommend replacing the face cover with a leather one like this one from Amazon for $30 and wearing a headband to soak up some sweat when you plan to play some active games, like Beat Saber. Take the HMD off every now and then to air it out and wipe it off. I also recommend the Vive-n-Chill or just a fan of some kind to help circulate air around your HMD/face, because the HMD gets hot after a couple hours.

So far I've had perfect success with this light stand and this attachment. I extend the legs completely which then take up a relatively small area, and I secure the legs with the two strong rubber bands that came with the attachments. The footprint is a triangle of about 1' (30.48 cm) per side.

u/Mastrful1 · 1 pointr/Vive

These are the ones I went with- looks like they are on sale now. Granted, I don't have anything to compare them with... But I've noticed the lighthouses vibrate, which can reverb down these stands and make some noise. Nothing too bad but I did want to point it out. Other then that, they're great- nice and tall, they come with ball heads which allow you to angle the lighthouse just how your want it, and they come with a carrying bag.

Please note that I do not have my Vive yet (still waiting) but I have been addicted to this reddit and my advice is just from what I've read on here.

The stands will help. Is it a tripod? Keep in mind you might also need to buy a ballhead adapter for the top so that you can angle them downward as much as you want. You'll just want them to be 1/4" like this one: http://www.amazon.com/EXMAX-Tripod-Camera-Camcorder-Bracket/dp/B012FTXOW4

Regarding sweat, I ordered one of these, but haven't received it yet. You'll be waiting for a month or so to have it shipped: https://vrcover.com/product/htc-vive-pre-vr-cover-waterproof-for-exhibitions-sport/

As for watching 360 videos, I believe you need a program that can handle it. Virtual Desktop (on Steam) has a way to do it. If you visit their Steam store page, their video is kinda long (but worth it to see all the features), but in the second half they demo being able to copy and paste a youtube URL of a 360 video directly into it.

Besides Steam directly, the Humble Bundle store is a good place to get some more games. Their Spring sale is going on now and literally ends in less than a day so check out this reddit post for some games you may be interested in before it's too late: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4jw21f/humble_spring_sale_vive_compatible_games/

So overall, connecting it and getting up and ready went pretty smooth? There seem to be so many posts for errors, need of help, etc. it makes me worry what kind of trouble to expect once it gets here.

My other question was, you said for Audioshield "no lag at all, even when streaming". What part was streaming? I don't have the game yet so I just wanted to clarify if it wasn't a locally downloaded game or what.

Also, my gf is also always the cold one. Especially her damn feet. She will put them up against me in the bed and damn those initial 10 seconds of helping warm her up suck. She's lucky I love her :P

u/RealMattorious · 2 pointsr/Vive

Not designed for the Vive per se, but the Superlux HD668B headphones are a perfect fit. The cord is designed to be replacable, so there's a short 3.5mm male connecter right on the end of the headset that fits perfectly into the Vive's female jack. It's made my Vive experience so much better.

u/SandwichWithMustard · 1 pointr/Vive

I was really overwhelmed with Elite: Dangerous without the Vive at first and gave up pretty quickly, but when I got the Vive I tried again. It sure looks amazing, but rolling (or whatever it's called) the space ship made me slightly dizzy and it was impossible to find all the (or any) keys. I haven't tried with a 360 controller. Oh, and I find it very hard to read the menus (no super-sampling possible with my machine).

Now with the HOTAS (this one: https://www.amazon.de/Thrustmaster-2960703-T-Flight-Hotas-Stick/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1485989359&sr=8-3&keywords=thrustmaster), it all feels very natural and I don't get dizzy anymore at all. I still have no idea how the game works, but flying the space ship itself is really cool. I don't know if that answers your question, though... :)

u/NikoWZRD · 1 pointr/Vive

Might be a silly question, but the Anker 20000 battery pack I've found on Amazon Canada is listed as a "Anker PowerCore Speed 20000" (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01N0X3NL5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_pETQBb1TM90PN) which appears to be QC 3.0 compatible, would this work OK?
Also have you tried charging the included battery with a USB-C to USB-C cable as opposed to the A-C one supplied? My included battery seems to be charging super slowly, wondering if my speed charger for my Android would play nice.

u/TehRawk · 2 pointsr/Vive

Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick is one of the best budget HOTAS. Thrustmaster T-16000M Flight Stick is probably a better stick, but not a HOTAS.

Or as other people have said. X52 would be best, if you can find one for a good price.

u/Ogg_Vorbis · 1 pointr/Vive

I don't know about him, but to extend my Vive by 30 feet to my front room I purchased this active HDMI cable and this Ethernet 4-Port USB Extender. I think the USB extender is more useful than an active USB cable as you have 4 different ports to add things like keyboards, mice, or racing wheels, and you also have the option to extend it further in the future just by buying another Ethernet cable.

u/amapatzer · 2 pointsr/Vive

Well in that case if you're going to buy tripods anyway, maybe just start with those and see how well they work for you?

I have these poles:

https://www.amazon.de/Wolfcraft-4042000-Deckenstütze-max-belastbar/dp/B001BWT2PA

And these to attach the lighthouses to the poles:

https://www.amazon.de/Kamera-Halterung-Motorrad-Fahrrad-Fotogewinde-Schnellspanner/dp/B00E5M39AW

Tbh. I think they work perfectly fine for me, but I am sure you will be able to find something better. I just bought those because they were cheap and could be delivered quickly and they didn't have horrible reviews ;)

u/Burn4Evr · 10 pointsr/Vive

I purchased https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MFG14ZT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The bag they come with is quite helpful as I put my mouse and keyboard and cables in the same bag.

They are lightweight but feel pretty good (I've bought camera tripods in the past that had paper thin aluminum)
I only use this when I take my Vive out to a friends house or if I'm temporarily setting up the vive in another room. 99% of the time I use my vive its on my wall mounts.

Depends on the size of the glasses. If you have a low prescription, you may not need them at all. I have -3.50 (nearsighted) in both eyes, and still need them. I have a 'small' pair of glasses just for use with the Vive, as they don't give enough peripheral vision for comfortable daily wear. If you can see normally at about 2 meters away from you, you can likely not bother with glasses.

Contact lenses are an option, and https://vr-lens-lab.com/ make and sell lens inserts that fit over the lens, even if they're a bit expensive for what you get, and some people do complain a bit. You'd also have to put them in and take them out any time you switched off play, increasing the risk of scratches just from handling and having stuff near the lenses to begin with.

The down side for the vision-corrected set is a lower FOV due to not being able to have the Vive lenses close enough, and not being able to use the 6mm 'thin foam' replacement covers for the same reason to their greatest effect. You can still use the covers, your roommate may just need to pop out the side depth-adjustment rings and move the HMD away to avoid scratching the lenses with his glasses. You probably will want to get a set of lens covers too; Hyperkin already makes some. The lenses are softer plastic, and apparently scratch fairly easily. So be careful.

Personally, I get around a 70-degree FOV with my glasses, using the FOV-measurement background in the Workshop, for the SteamVR home screen. I've been told that people who don't need glasses can get upward of 90 though with the thin-foam.
Even so, it's still an amazing experience. And one that has me seriously re-considering LASIK, as it's only going to get better in the years to come.

u/VRegg · 1 pointr/Vive

I use the 6mm ones with a leather-like covering and they are an improvement but not by much in terms of heat. I find the leathery feel of them cooler and less itchy. The nice thing is they are easier to dry off while the original was nasty like a moist sponge.

You can get two for $30 and I also like the slight FOV improvement.

I have the hyperkin silicone protectors for both the display and controllers. I just bought them because it looks cool. I still have the cover on the display but took the covers off of the controllers. The material holds pretty well but it is still a little bit loose. I noticed the silicone also made my hands sweat more and were just in general less comfortable than using the controllers without covers.

I also just ordered these replacement foams https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HM4QB0Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Reviews look good so I don't see why they wouldn't work.

The ball mounts are great but I'm not use how the stands would do over long periods of time. But for now, they are perfect. They do however come with little draw strings bags that are pretty shitty.

I have the Superlux HD668B they have a really great sound for the price. The ear pads need to be exchanged to be comfortable, luckily these fit.
Edit: forgot to mention: They have a male 3,5 audiojack on the left cup. and a 1m cable is included, which makes it really convenient to use the the vive.

u/thestonedbandit · 4 pointsr/Vive

You shouldn't have a hard time getting the maximum turn speed with a mouse. Make sure that you're not full throttle. The throttle has a blue section in the middle where your turn speed is maximized. Look through all the keybindings, there are a ton of them and you'll find stuff that you need. Like shifting the power from weapons to engines to get your boost to charge faster, or systems to get your shields to charge faster. Also make sure your landing gear is up because that slows you down to make it easier to land.

You could probably do fine with just a joystick and the keyboard if you can touch type. Cheapest best 3d (rotating for yaw)
joystick is the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro for like $35. If you want to feel more like you're flying a starship, I'd recommend the Thrustmaster Hotas X. It's probably the best sub $100 hotas, but you'll still need to use the keyboard for some things because there are only so many buttons and E:D has oh so many bindable commands.

u/Luminaria19 · 1 pointr/Vive

These are showing as currently unavailable, but they're what I have and what I recommended to a friend a few days ago.

You'll need to get the ball heads separately (I got two of these), but they work perfectly.

u/RingoFreakingStarr · 7 pointsr/Vive

This smaller Anker one lasts me just as long as the one HTC shipped with the adapter; around 2.5 hours of continuous use.

This larger Anker one lasts me well over 4 hours. I haven't actually had it die on me yet; my longest playsession since getting the adapter has been around 4 and a half hours. It is decently bulky but it does fit into the included battery clip that the adapter comes with. It's just too large length wise so it will stick out the top of the clip. I wouldn't worry about it falling out of the clip though since it is a snug fit.

Also, this wall charger with QC 3.0 ports works with powering the wireless adapter. I've used it for when I'm doing sim stuff in the corner of my room. Having to plug in the wired Vive Pro cables for sim use is a real hassle so I just keep the wireless adapter on and plug the adapter into the wall charger. Works flawlessly.

Thanks! Please let me know what you find. Luckily, my son just got back from college ...with a digital calipers.

They confirm power AFTER the breakout is 1.3mm (inner dia.) x 3.5mm (outer dia.) like this cable I'm using:
http://www.amazon.com/Hanvex-HDCA12-Extension-Foscam-Wireless/dp/B00FT9VW0O

And the power IN to the breakout appears to be 1.3mm (inner dia.) x 3.75mm (outer dia.) And this roughly agrees with my caveman assessment: it feels like I can cram the breakout A/C adapter into the extension cable above, but I can't quite - even with some force.

But, I don't see an extension cable like than anywhere. Mouser has a 1.3x3.7 connector, and a few 1.3x3.8 connectors. 1.35 inner diameter also seems to be popular. This stuff is all new to me.

u/THALANDMAN · 2 pointsr/Vive

I bought this one because from what I could gather from people here and from reading reviews it seems to be the best entry level setup. It has worked perfectly in Elite, just go in to the bindings and set them however you like. https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Playstation-3/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467089762&sr=8-1&keywords=t+flight+hotas+x

Get yourself a thinner face foam replacement, and adjust the knobs on the side to bring it as close as possible to your face. Actually results in a significant FOV increase!

These are the ones I use, and they're great but definitely overpriced (plus it comes with two units, and I've never had to open the second one in almost a year of ownership). I'm sure the cheaper alternatives are more than adequate.

u/ns1902 · 1 pointr/Vive

Really liking the Superlux HD668B's that I bought for my Vive. The gap in the middle fits perfectly over the wires on the top of your head. They sound great and with a little 5 inch 3.5mm extension cable I got they are able to plug in without any excess wire.

http://www.amazon.com/Superlux-HD668B-Dynamic-Semi-Open-Headphones/dp/B003JOETX8?ie=UTF8&keywords=superlux%20hd%20668b&qid=1464382805&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

u/Reasonabledwarf · 2 pointsr/Vive

If you're gonna do Bluetooth, make sure you have a powerful radio, or else you'll get lots of dropped audio. It's also possible that the Vive only outputs to the headset, and by extension, the 3.5mm jack on the headset, in which case it wouldn't be an option without a lot of tweaking or reprogramming.

Any stereo headset/headphones will do 360 sound, because you only have two ears; the 360 part comes from processing the audio on the CPU end (based on the estimated location of your ears from the position of the headset).

Personally, I'm vacillating between a cheap pair of on-ear headphones I bought (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006B486K?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00) that are actually pretty solid, or wiring up my Philips bluetooth headset (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-SHB7000-28-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00CAJOOWE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1456873525&sr=8-2) which has the advantage of being easier to put on/take off.

I recently purchased Amazon Basics Lighting Stands to mount the lighthouses on for my Vive and it has really made my experience better. Previously I was limited to a 6'x6' space just barely big enough for room scale, and had difficulties keeping track of my boundaries (I punched the back of my TV prompting the light stand purchase). It's so much nicer to be able to change the position of the lighthouses, and I can now play in a larger space and put everything away when I'm done with it.

I cannot wait until the wireless adapter comes out, I have a large 10'x10' space in my apartment just too far from my PC to use now, it's going to be perfect once the wireless comes out.

Anyone who has a difficult space for mounting the lighthouses or wants more freedom with their setup I really recommend the light stands!

Edit:

CowboyStudio Set of Two 7 feet Photography Light Stands with Cases https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001WB02Z4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_17wvyb1KS6JDT

I believe these are the ones I got, I didn't want to like from Amazon prime now as that may not be available to everyone.

Edit 2: just checked those linked above are the ones I have! I will say the base is somewhat bulky, I'm sure if you wanted to spend a little more you could get some nicer ones. But the general idea of the lighting stands is what I'm plugging rather than that specific product. I love the ones I have and won't be changing them out anytime soon, but if you're concerned about the base width and everything it couldn't hurt to shop around.

I use this tripod, but it does come with two tripods. Maybe you could find a solo elsewhere, but having two allows you to take your Vive to somewhere and set it up for demos. Did that at a friend's house a few months ago and it worked great.

Also make sure you have a mount of some kind to make sure your lighthouse can be positioned accordingly.

I bought these specifically for my Vive and they've turned out to be perfect for it. They have a male connector on one side that you plug the cord into. So, the female connector on the Vive can attach directly to the headphones. The cord on the Vive is the perfect length to connect to the headphones with no slack. It's basically like having wireless headphones. They also sound great for the price.

Adding to the comments.

This battery (and some like it) not only last >5 hours, but also fit snugly into the stock belt clip! Also, you can use one battery to charge another, so you could chain that into the stock battery for 7.5hrs (I've done this before by keeping one battery in each pocket).

The chaining thing also works for using a non-QC3 charger to charge the stock battery! It'd be interesting to see if you could get the full life out of the stock battery this way... most non-QC3 power blocks output about 2.4A for about 15watts, the stock charger puts about 24 watts into the headset I believe, so a 20000mA battery like that could potentially keep the stock battery lasting over 6 hours as well.

There are cheap pairs you can find on amazon for about $35-40. I ordered a pair but was unhappy with the amount of wobble when extended at max height. How's that compare to the base battery? I'm not up on battery stuff. Does it have a larger capacity?

> I'm on a 4770k slightly overclocked with just regular ram and a 1070. OG Vive, can't tell a difference from wired. Oh, except now we don't get tangled and can wander much farther out. The wire length restricted us.

Oh yeah, mounting the wire... My play space is across the room and the clip doesn't attach to my monitor well. I'm thinking about getting a small shelf or something to just put up close to the ceiling from the opposite corner of the room from the play space and hoping that works okay. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001WB02Z4/

I would also recommend extending the triple cable an extra 10 feet. You won't be able to keep the cable and HMD in the box after adding the cables, but it doesn't get tangled as easy and just works better when having other people try it for the first time.

I use this: Anker PowerCore Speed 10000mAh,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JIYWUBA?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Fits nicely into the belt clip, charges fairly quickly and lasts twice as long as the vive battery. Definitely recommend it

On a side note, I was having trouble with my headset having grey flashes which is why I purchased a new battery in the first place (figured the usb port on the battery was too loose). It turned out I needed to replace the usb that connected the battery to the receiver as well. Was super annoying but glad it was an easy fix.

$27 for a set of 2 photography light stands: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001WB02Z4

$10 for a pair of swivel mounts so you can angle the base stations however you like: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M07M9D4

One advantage with these over the other suggestion in this thread is that this setup doesn't need to touch the ceiling to work.
I can confirm these work great for bringing a Vive around to random places, and works well even on soft surfaces like carpet.

u/L3f7y04 · 1 pointr/Vive

I have the:
https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Stick-Pc/dp/B001CXYMFS
and I love it for Elite. I use the Crab Hotas setup from the forums and it runs great. I cant vouch for the other one, but I have zero issues.
I attached mine via velcro adhesives to a 24" long piece of shelving and it is heavy enough to keep it in my lap and is very stable. Makes it easy to store on my desk and move to my lap with the headset still on.

u/mdillenbeck · 1 pointr/Vive

My mobile solution was a little more expensive: light stands with carrying bag, ball mounts, and sand weights - a bit more expensive, but very stable. (Sand or rock needed to fill bags, price not included but only a couple of bucks. I put my sand in double 1 gallon bags in each of the 3 sides of each base sand holder.)

For my mobile rig, I already owned an older Alienware 17 R3 and added a graphics amplifier with a Titan X. Works pretty good as a mobile VR rig. Fairly solid VR rig.

u/mvincent17781 · 2 pointsr/Vive

Don't know if it fits your definition of "decent" but the Thrustmaster HOTAS X which is the HOTAS I have, has been decent enough for everything I've played. At just under $40, the cost effectiveness can't be beaten.

Edit: For clarity, I haven't played Elite with it (but I've heard a lot of people do and it's fine). I've played X-Plane 10, DCS World, and Farm Sim 17 with it. Works flawlessly for everything.

u/joviangod · 2 pointsr/Vive

I bought the T-Flight HOTAS. They were a great entry level HOTAS. Do everything you need and reasonably priced especially if you only have the one flight sim. And yes, this game will melt your face with its splendor!

u/Dutchmagic · 1 pointr/Vive

I've been very happy with these. If you get these - make sure you also get this.
I take my Vive to friends all the time and this has worked very well.

u/VirtualBoy4Life · 4 pointsr/Vive

I really like the VRCover 6mm foam replacement ($29 here). They get your face closer to the lenses giving you a wider field of view. Plus it is way more comfortable than the foam the Vive comes with.

As far as games are concerned here a couple useful links I have bookmarked:

u/Blackhawks10 · 1 pointr/Vive

If you're looking to see if you'd like a HOTAS. This is a pretty good starter one:

Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_OdTlxbCPA8M65

Simple, cheap, and has enough buttons if you do combos (i.e. Using a button like the alt or cntrl key).

Obviously if you want to spend more, they're are ones of higher quality and more functionality, but for the price, it's pretty solid.

u/Aarenas52 · 1 pointr/Vive

you should Check out DCS. its a flight sim. you can get into it with a $30 usd joystick logitech por 3d or a bit more ($15 more for a better one) the thrustmaster. anyways. DCS is free and you get 2 free planes. even if you dont fly right now im sure it will look great with the vive. its the only reason i want one really. i hear the oculous rift may be better for sims but i also want room experiance so yea vive.

u/HaCutLf · 1 pointr/Vive

Not trying to shill or anything, but these are extremely well priced. I have the non-Vive version. But looks like they've since made a VR version!

What do you think of this solution someone posted above? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L4YR0BS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Does it still need a clamp?

I really like the floor-to-ceiling FastCap solution because I feel like I'll use them later in life, but assuming they'd stay up a while and they're in my living room I'd like something less obvious than bright red!

u/mywowtoonnname · 2 pointsr/Vive

https://www.harborfreight.com/2-in-1-support-cargo-bar-66172.html?utm_referrer=direct%2Fnot%20provided&utm_referrer=direct%2Fnot%20provided

Then use these to attach the lighthouses:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E5M39AW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_39sSzbMJP3K65

They screw in perfectly on the lighthouses. These make it extremely easy to reposition and pack up if you need to. I've taken these on vacation and you can basically set them up anywhere. In my experience, I haven't noticed any difference in tracking between using these or wall-mounting. Worth the $50-$60 for sure.

u/EdenSB · 2 pointsr/Vive

I believe that most people drill them into the wall. You can use the mounts they come with for that and it's probably the closest thing to the 'official' way. That's just a case of put mounts on wall in appropriate place, make markings on holes, drill the holes and put in provided (or other) wall plugs, screw the mount on. Other people put them on tripod-like stands.

I've seen people put them on shelves/etc but in theory I believe they're supposed to be tilted down slightly which could be an issue on a cupboard. You could buy clamps if you've anything to clamp them on.

You could potentially mount them on a heavy L shaped piece of wood or something like that if that would go on top of a wardrobe or the like.

Lighthouses do vibrate slightly, so whatever method you use, it should be secure.

I'm not home atm so cant take pics. Ill try to do that tomorrow but if you dont hear back just cokment on this tread again to remind me id be more than happy to show you. Here are the three cables i purchased, id recommend only these three as i had to do some research because a lot of lower quality cables will cause latency or simply not work at all also, any more than 10 feet will cause issues as hdmi cables dont transfer data over long distances very well. The towel rack and shower rings where purchased at a local home improvment store so no links for those but you can find those at any walmart target lowes etc.

Depends on how hight the ceiling is at your friends...

If it is normal height, then something like these are the best from what I read...

https://www.amazon.com/FastCap-Support-System--144-Inches-3HAND5/dp/B000067S12/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1467363597&sr=8-3&keywords=ceiling+support

the lighthouses can then be mounted on the supports with 2 of these

I personally bought 2 light stands similar to these because I have a heigher ceiling that the supports can reach
https://www.amazon.com/StudioPRO-Photography-Stands-Carrying-Studio/dp/B00HNZJLG4/ref=sr_1_8?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1467363968&sr=1-8&keywords=light+stand

It works, but I always fear someone running against the stands while playing , knocking them over. Much better should be the first solution, it also has a smaller footprint using less space than the light stands

Hey everyone,

I can't drill my walls currently, so I need to buy something as a mounting solution for the time being. I am going to purchase this pole with this clamp and I was wondering if there is anything else I need to buy.

Also, one last question, I have heard that the nintendo wii wrist straps are the best ones to get, so would this version be the correct one to purchase?

Thanks in advance.

u/pharmacist10 · 9 pointsr/Vive

I'm firmly on the side of yes, totally worth it (Vive Pro + wireless).

You do need a beefy CPU to handle it without any issues though -- what do you have? I have a 8700k@5ghz and have had zero issues with it in every game so far (including a heavily modified skyrimVR, and lightly modded Fallout 4 VR). Appearance and performance vs. wired has been the same for me.

The only other consideration is the stock battery only lasts about 1.5 hours. You can buy 3rd party, higher capacity batteries that last way longer. I use this one which lasts about 4 hours. It also fits the little belt clip that comes with the stock battery. You can use any battery like that just so long it is QC 3.0.

Even if you have a small play space, being able to move, turn and twist without the cable being in the way is just amazing. It seems like a small benefit, but it really drives immersion even further.

u/gonne · 2 pointsr/Vive

Instead of tripods, I'm using some very long shower curtain rods.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L43HT2E/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_0

and pipe clamps:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E5M39AW/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_1

It works like a charm, easy to set up and move if needed, and is a lot more compact than using a tripod :)

u/mdamaged · 1 pointr/Vive

Yes, it comes with everything you'd need, but if you're going into drywall, I would suggest buying some better anchors like these, the ones they come with aren't the best.

If you plan one making it mobile, maybe look into some tripod mounts, the bases support a standard mount.

u/breakwhore · 1 pointr/Vive

I've had similar problems. I ended up replacing the power banks and cables. For anyone else looking - the power banks have to be QC3 aka Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 (or presumably above).

I found the power bank connection had broken the port the charging cable goes in just from a bit of general usage!

Been using the following with good results:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07GJ4BTVR/ - Spiral Coil USB Cable USB 3.0 Male to Female Extension Cord 1.5 m/3.3 Feet - I bought thinking it might mean the cable drags around the female part of the extension when moving around instead of drag being created on the power bank itself

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B079Z3XJ9S/ - wall charger - for charging and also as an experimental pass through for a mains connection, though not sure how much that's safe as such as there's no auto-off!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07FF151SZ/ 20000 mAh power bank (don't fit in the clip)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B076YBGLHV/ 25000mAh power bank - (seem to be unavailable atm unfortunately)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N0X3NL5/ - 20000mAh power bank - these fit in the clip that comes with the kit but poke a lot out as they're much longer and higher capacity

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01JIYWUBA/ - 10000 mAh power bank - these fit perfectly in the clips

u/lastrogu3 · 2 pointsr/Vive

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000067S12/

and I ordered two of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E5M39AW

They work great and take up hardly any space at all.

If you have a pretty high ceiling or a ceiling that is angled I would not recommend this setup. I tried setting it up on an angled ceiling and caught it as it fell a minute or two after setting it up.

u/xresonance · 2 pointsr/Vive

I got these ones, they work great. https://www.amazon.com/Vive-Memory-Foam-Replacement-Better/dp/B01HM4QB0Y

It's nice that the sweat can be easily wiped off, especially if a bunch of friends are using it. I've also had luck cutting bits of double-sided velcro strips (fuzzy one side, hooks the other) and putting them under parts of the facemask, to adjust the overall tilt and position of the headset for my face. Without that, the nose thing tends to squish my nose and it's uncomfortable, but easy to fix.

u/SigmaStroud · 2 pointsr/Vive

Here's the page I used:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/wiki/cables

and this is what I bought:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I48Q892/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B013VP3372/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I ran these from my bedroom upstairs, through the vent and down into the livingroom closet (there was already a line drilled for the network cord). Fed the HDMI and the Ethernet line down to my entertainment center and it works like a charm, not even any lag. Genuinely surprised. Well... minus the camera situation. Not sure if that's because of my setup or if it's a setting issue.

u/DocSarcasmo · 0 pointsr/Vive

Use light stands. I'm a renter and don't want to drill into the walls. I've used light stands since I got my Vive and they work perfectly. You also need a small camera adapter on the top so you can angle the lighthouses. Here is an Amazon link:

u/Nostrathomas99 · 1 pointr/Vive

When it's all said and done you can be up and running in under an hour. The hardest part is figuring out where to put the lighthouses. I recommend picking up some cheap photography lightstands on amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ESJ7754/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I just got the Superlux HD668B headphones and they are working great. I don't notice them when I have the headset on and they plug directly into the female headset aux cord. The aux cable coming from the headphones is about an inch and is a male end (you can see it in the picture on the link). They don't break the bank, don't have to deal with the aux cord, and feel comfortable on long play sessions.

not ear phone but https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006B486K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 this worked fairly well, though since they are not ear phone you can hear stuff around you, but it makes demoing the vive to friends easier as you don't have to clean the earbuds etc and they can hear you when you give them directions.

I went with a recommended Anker 20000 as it fits perfect in the included battery clip. It's a monster and lasts for hours. But as it's heavier than the stock battery it doesn't easily clip directly to the headband like with the stock battery, so smaller batteries could be a better choice for that.

Supposedly any battery with Quick Charge 3.0 output will work, probably some black friday deals going on.

I got a couple of "light stands" and they work wonderfully. They're normally used for filmmaking, easy to setup and take down, but hold lights or other lightweight objects at whatever height/angle you need.

They're perfect for the Vive lighthouses; all you need is an adapter for the standard camera-tripod mount on the bottom of the lighthouse. Here's a bundle with everything included.

u/davedontmind · 1 pointr/Vive

> What have you found to be the best way to mount your sesors.

The Vive comes with wall mounts for the lighthouses - you can just screw them to the walls.

However, as I mentioned in my other post in this thread, I have to move my kit between a couple of rooms, so I opted for 2 of these along with 2 of these. The poles are quick to release and re-position, and take up minimal floor space. So far I'm happy with the choice, even if it does make the room look ever so slightly like a building site!

They have longer ones if you have high ceilings as well also check out our wiki for other mounting solutions just kidding where the fuck did that page for it go?

But for your own home, just attach em, its only two small holes and you can patch it easy. A little toothpaste will do the trick if you don't feel like going to Lowe's for the paste.

If paint matching is a concern, bring a chip and they can match for you whenever you go to move.

You're spending $800 on this. Tripods are great for traveling with the vive, but at home, don't risk knocking over your expensive sensitive lighthouses just to save $10 on plaster when you move.

How much space do you have? When I first got my Vive I bought a couple of these lighting tripods and these ball-head adapters that somebody in the sub recommended and they worked great. Tripods designed for lights work better for base stations than ones designed for cameras because of the extra height, and they can also be easily folded up and stuck in a closet or wherever when not in use. You'll have to re-calibrate your area every time you set them up, though.

Cheap. Sound quality is good. Detachable cable. Comfy. And the gap in the padding that goes over your head is almost like it was made for the Vive as the cables all feed through it and are not pushed into your head at all.

Only thing I would recommend is changing the pad covers to velour ones to avoid sweaty ear syndrome.

I'm using these:

Obviously not as stable as a wall mount, but they're pretty good.

Chances are you'll want to angle them down for optimal coverage. You can mount them directly into concrete/brick. Just drill with a masonry bit and use anchors.

However, as another user pointed out if you are putting up shelves and they are wood you could just attach the mounting bracket right to the shelving or purchase a clamp mount like this, this or this. The bolt size is a 1/4 20 which is the standard for consumer cameras tripod mounts so you can find tons of mounting options out there.

If you search a bit you can find tons of mounting alternative threads like this.
