I'm on the Northeast side as well (pretty much directly east of Old Town), and I get great reception. I'm using this antenna, pointed west, with this amplifier attached. I'm able to get all the major networks (with the exception of MyNetwork TV, and who cares about MyNetwork TV?), plus a handful of smaller channels.

I can second GPA. I've met a couple of their instructors. It's good training at a good price.

Edit:
If you want to get your feet wet, this book will be indispensable during flight school.

It would also be worth your while to find and fix the drafts you mentioned, inexpensively and without any permanent modifications to the property.
Outlet/switch insulators are cheap, easy to install, and effective.

If you feel cold air from the gaps between the wall and your window/door trim, stuff backer rod in the gaps. (It's similar to rolls of self-stick foam watherstripping, but doesn't have the "sticky". You can also cut it in half/quarter for smaller gaps.)

If the windows are drafty, install heat-shrink film kits on any you won't need to open (or adjust blinds on) over the winter. For windows you may need to open or that have thick blinds, use butyl "cord" weatherstripping. Squish it into the edges/corners of window frames/panes/etc. It's removable and is available in multiple colors.

(Source: I live in a 100+ year old house, with zero wall insulation and drafty original windows.)

I would:

  1. get the new computer

  2. take the old computer apart to check the "hard drive connection"

  3. make sure that connection matches this thing (or something similar)

  4. Buy that to just connect the old hard drive as an external drive and copy files over

If you sent pictures of the old hard drive, I could likely verify it'd work before you spend the $14. A possible complication is that the new (Windows) computer may have NTFS protections and the new (Windows) computer may respect those, not allowing you to access the files. There are ways around that, like running a Live CD for Linux that disregards NTFS protections.

You can buy them straight from amazon or if you know someone who works for a school, they can order them through their food service (by the case)

Are you trying to get one cheaper than retail, or is the request because you haven't been able to find one locally?

I've seen a few in stock at Best Buy and Walmart several times in the last few weeks but, who knows, maybe the stores are beginning to lose them to holiday mobs. Tis (almost) the season, after all.

If you're willing to pay $300 and can't find one in town, amazon appears to have them in stock for the retail price.
