Pepper's Quick Starter Guide

The first thing I want to say is that I'm SO happy for you that you found a doctor that knows about this. It works! I was diagnosed with PCOS and prediabetes at 29. I'm now 48 and I have NO PCOS, NO prediabetes, and my insulin levels are 'beautiful.' Cholesterol is great. You are 100% on the right track and it's so worth the small sacrifice of the diet for your health. Keto is a life saver.

The first week is very hard, but it gets easier. It takes 1-2 months to become fully fat-adapted so know that you're going to feel better and better over time. Please use this sub and r/keto for help and advice getting through it. There are TONS of tips and tricks to help you feel better if things aren't going well. For the first week, don't restrict your intake at all. You may find yourself so hungry. It's okay to feed the monster all she wants that week. After that, you're going to have to eat more sensibly. Calories DO count. You can eat more with keto, but everyone has a limit.

You can make this diet as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. You can do meat, eggs, spices, zero-calorie drinks and lose weight and fix your metabolism. Or you can get into elaborate recipes with exotic ingredients and have fun with that, too.

I go for easy-as-possible-while-still-being-satisfying-and-tasty. If it's too hard, I just can't stick with it. If it's too bland, I get palate fatigue and give in to cravings.

  1. Keep it simple. Focus on what you can eat - not on what you can't. (Meat, cheese, eggs, low carb veggies. Google 'low carb vegetable list' and print one out. Herbs, spices, onions, leeks, and mushrooms are 'free.') Keep your total carb count under 20g a day and try not to eat that all at once.

  2. I do two prep cooks. Once a month is my meat. Cookie sheets of chicken thighs, grilled steaks, roast in the crock pot, chopped bacon, and breakfast sausage. I store it all in baggies and freeze it.

  3. The second prep is weekly. Hard boil a dozen eggs per person. Prep my fresh veggies. Make my bread. (Recipe below)

  4. I use frozen veggies all the time. Toss a box or bag in the microwave, dump on a plate, and eat with whatever meat. I also rely on lunch meat, jerky, and canned kippers for a quick snack.

  5. Spaghetti squash is your friend. Buy a cheap hacksaw to cut it open safely. Cut it in half, scrape out the seeds, put 1/4 cup water in the hollow where the seeds were. Carefully wrap it up with cling wrap. Microwave for 6-10 minutes. (Depends on how powerful your machine is) Let it sit for about 10 minutes because it's going to be hot as hell. Scrape the 'noodles' out with a fork. Use that as you would noodles or potatoes. You can store the noodles for up to 3 days in the fridge. (All squash and zucchini is considered 'safe.')

  6. Buy the giant mushrooms, slice them up, saute them in butter, and now you have flat noodles! Also good for 3 days.

  7. Eggs! Did I mention eggs?!! Eggs will save you a ton of money and time. They're a perfect food (unless you're allergic to eggs) and you can have as many as you want. Endless ways to cook 'em. You can crack an egg in a mug, add some shredded cheese, and a bit of your prepped bacon or sausage and microwave it for a two minute breakfast.

  8. I avoid all liquids with artificial sweeteners. I drink coffee, herbal tea, iced black tea, water, and Le Croix. That's it. Might put lemon or lime in my water.

  9. For your fats, stick with coconut oil, butter, lard, and duck fat. You can also cook with heavy whipping cream and use it in your coffee.

  10. You're going to see how your body reacts to the sugar alcohols. If they work for you, you are one lucky girl.

If you can tolerate sugar alcohols, this is the best zero carb sweetener (in my opinion). Monk Fruit with Erythritol: (Use like sugar in recipes) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LDNBAC4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

If your system is sensitive like mine is, this is the only option that I've found that works. You can't use it like sugar (a little goes a LONG way and it's bitter if you use a lot) but it can be used to sweeten coffee and tea. Monk fruit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F9QY944/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  11. Watch your nuts and cheese intake. I don't understand it, but they do seem to hold me and many others back when it comes to weight loss. In my case, it's so bad that I just avoid nuts completely. My daughter's that way with cheese. You're going to have to find what works for you, but if you find yourself in a long stall, these are the two most common culprits.

  12. Save this link to your phone. This shows you all of the keto options at the 12 most popular fast food chains. You're going to need something to fall back on in emergencies. (Today I had a double quarter pounder with with cheese and bacon/no bun and a regular iced tea at McDonalds. I was at the hospital all day and didn't have the chance to eat before I left home or to pack anything. Saved my butt.) https://nobunplease.com/eating-out-keto-low-carb-guides/?fbclid=IwAR37Q4X-JwAG3l81fOzfcTQYOkjS1QUhGcX-K21C7Bw-LNy-HRk8MO7XS6E

  13. This is the best keto cooking channel that I've found. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzRYivTpUQ0r2qPPjfLoQiA

  14. This is the second best, but the recipes are more complicated. https://www.youtube.com/user/HeadbangersKitchen

  15. Electrolytes. There are several options out there and I don't know if one is better than another. I buy bulk minerals off of Amazon, mix them up in a big travel mug and work on that all day. (Potassium citrate-1 tsp, potassium bicarbonate-1/2 tsp, calcium citrate-1/2 tsp, magnesium citrate-1/2 tsp. Cost me less than $80 up front and will save me hundreds of dollars over time to do it this way.) It's really necessary to keep up on your electrolytes or you're going to feel like crap. Oh! And drink broth and use salt on your food.

This is the company that I use for that stuff: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GW5NX8I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

  16. Here's where I get the coconut flour for my bread. You might be able to find a better deal at a local store. (In my area, there aren't as many options) Coconut Flour (6 pound bag): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0160D5GYK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

Yes!! I've been lifting for a few years and it all started with the book the New Rules of Lifting for Women: http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Rules-Lifting-Women/dp/1583333398

SUCH A GREAT RESOURCE, comes with programs for 6+ months of efficient and effective training that varies depending on your goals. I recommend everyone start with that, or at least have it in their library as a good resource. Once you have a hold of the basics and good form, then it's a lot of fun cruising around bodybuilding.com's complete (and free!) programs and simplyshredded.com's female interviews, which include the interviewee's favorite programs. I would definitely start with the New Rules of Lifting, though, since it will create a solid strength base which will give you the confidence and good form to be able to play around with your programming later.

Also, Mark Rippetoe's book "Starting Strength" (pretty popular, you can probably find at the library) is dense but very very clear as to the proper mechanics of every basic lift and has a good beginner's program outlined towards the end.

FINALLY, while you don't need to look at those programs, you do need A program and to write down what you do every time you go in. This will prevent you from overworking/underworking certain muscle groups, help you keep track of strength progress, and also allow you in a few weeks/months/years to remember what worked for your body and what did not.
Good luck!!

I bought collagen powder on a recommendation from another redditor, to go with my quest coconut oil powder that I am absolutely IN LOVE with (it makes your coffee taste like Swiss Miss without the sugary feel - though with a splash of SF vanilla my coffee is amazing! Anyway, I bought it to combat my ever more crappy nails. Dear lord, I am drinking the most filling coffee ever. Instead of 2-3 cups of just coconut fat, a single serving of each divided into two cups is amazingly filling. Wow. 8g of fat and 18g of protein out of the gates. And I hope my nails grow!! The collagen (to those who wonder) is flavorless, and with the coconut oil powder and vanilla, it's just creamy frothy coffee. (I use a milk frother)

I've been bad about tracking, but I've also been lifting so I've just tried to eat when I am hungry... okay, maybe I haven't been quite so careful. I woke up today 1lb up, but 1 lb up from my lowest... well within my happy window of success. Today my husband played hookie, so while I wait for my kiln to cool off, we're going to sneak off for breakfast and a matinee of the Magical Beasts movie!! Not a terrible way to go. Although after this coffee, I'd be happy seeing the movie first and then eating... but not sure he could do that. And he's supportive of the fact that I have to hit the gym, and may go with me. Where was he wednesday when I got pinned under the bench press bar, lol.

How is it only Wednesday?! Three-day weekends spoil me. No pool time since it rained and was cloudy over the weekend, BUT adorable new swimsuit has been achieved. The other one I ordered was a high-waist two piece, super cute, but alas, the plight of the small-chested comes after me again with the top being too big (cup-wise, not band-wise) and the bottom too small, despite my quickly flattening, shrinking butt. Still, it's nice to be excited about these kind of things. Tried to simplify things this week with a beef and butter fast (I know, I know, not a "real" fast). Idk it seemed like a good idea at the time, and yes, it is delicious, but man, it's been a reminder of how many times a day I think of food, and ooh, wouldn't it be great to eat this RIGHT THIS SECOND, no, on Saturday—NO NOW. Silly old brain.

Speaking of silly old brains, anxiety has kicked up, and it was hard enough falling asleep last night, which is not a problem I usually ever have. After my work/fun holiday next month, I need to really get around to talking to my manager about my want to find a different job or go back to my old one. She's been the best manager I've had, but this constant mid-level stress (in a job that shouldn't be this stressful) is not good for me. :\ Anyways, hope you guys have a better day ahead of you than I do. \<3

Ketogenic diet is not a fad. It was developed in the 1920s to eliminate/minimize epilepsy and other seizure disorders by Dr. Wilder at the Mayo Clinic. It was widely used and fell out of favor in the 1950s when Big Pharma pushed pharmaceutical products as a treatment. Presently, Ketogentic diet is utilized when the pharmaceutical treatment fails. The Ketogentic diet continues to gain popularity and is becoming more favored over pharmaceutical approach.

I feel that the book "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living: An Expert Guide to Making the Life-Saving Benefits of Carbohydrate Restriction Sustainable and Enjoyable " is the best to book to provide her. The authors Dr. Steven Phinney and Dr. Jeff Voleck are very educated and site a ton of research (both modern and historical) on the subject.

Dr. Stephen D. Phinney is a Professor of Medicine Emeritus at UC-Davis. He is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. He has twenty-five years of clinical experience as a director of multi-disciplinary weight management programs and has contributed to books and peer reviewed articles and is an expert in low carb nutrition and metabolism, fatty acids, inflammation, and the metabolic syndrome.

Dr. Jeff S. Volek is an associate professor in The Human Performance Laboratory at The University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. He is an R.D. and has a Ph.D. in Kinesiology (Pennsylvania State University). He serves on the editorial boards of Nutrition and Metabolism and the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. He has published over 200 scientific articles and chapters.

This book is geared more toward medical professionals and people that have a great interest in the science behind it all.

Hope this helps

Keep smiling

Congratulations on your weight loss! That's great. I actually found your post by searching the name of my new book on Google. It's called "Why Your Clothes Misbehave". I'm a personal stylist. You might check out my book. It might be helpful. I'm glad you're celebrating your success. It's something to be proud of. Have a lovely day! https://www.amazon.com/Why-Your-Clothes-Misbehave-Sharon/dp/1793424306/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_2?keywords=why+your+clothes+misbehave&qid=1550859804&s=gateway&sr=8-2-fkmrnull

I have found that taking a multi-vitamin greatly helped me on my keto journey. I take Super Nutrition for my daily ( for you: http://www.amazon.com/The-Womens-Blend-180-Tablet/dp/B00028PHN0). I eased into it, taking one in the morning, and one in the afternoon (not in the evening, the vitamins kept me too active and I couldn't go to bed. CLEAN ALL THE THINGS! lol). Other than Nutrilite, Super Nutrition has been the best vitamin for me. I have used several. Also, I see it has the biotin /u/sosotris recommended.

I also take Magnesium for muscle cramps. I take both of these "at the right times", and supplement on an as-needed basis http://www.amazon.com/KAL-Magnesium-Glycinate-400-tablets/dp/B00013YZ1Q , http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Made-High-Potency-Magnesium/dp/B002E7N1CG.

Disclaimer: I am not a woman (I get leg cramps, especially after consuming alcohol), and I am not associated with any of the brands listed.

Interested to know what you land on when you find something that works for you!

u/AndroidGingerbread · 1 pointr/xxketo

My daily electrolyte supplements usually look like this:

  • 1 packet of ElectroMix mixed with a teaspoon or 2 of Natural Calm in a glass of water.
  • 1 chicken bullion cube mixed in a tall mug of hot water. (Sometimes I do this twice a day, depending on how I feel.)

The rest of my electrolytes come from food. If I still feel unwell after the above, I may drink another ElectroMix. This seems to be working well for managing my induction.

Remember: Spinach is a good source of potassium and other healthy nutrients. It never hurts to mix it into whatever you're making or have a side salad with some olive oil.

Best of luck to you and KCKO! :)

(copying and pasting from a convo above so you see this info too, Scout).

I am coming back to this convo today to let you know about another resource I found yesterday. I wasn't feeling well Saturday so I spent a lot of time on the couch reading. :) This book, Never Binge Again, has great reviews and is free for Kindle on Amazon and also this guys website. There are a bunch of free resources on his website to supplement the book. I read almost the entire book in a couple hours (it's short), and it was very impactful! It's not for everyone, that's for sure, but I know it's already helped me. Going to keep The Pig caged for sure, haha! If you read it you will know what I mean. :)

I have yet to find a low carb brownie recipe that is actually close enough to the real thing to make it worthwhile. However, I do love make chocolate whipped cream. Just add coco powder to heavy whipping cream with your favorite artificial sweetener and blend until fluffy. You can also add cream cheese to make it more of a cheesecake type of thing. If I add cream cheese I usually also add natural peanut butter to make a [mousse] (http://www.yummly.com/recipe/5-Minute-Peanut-Butter-Mousse-Low-Carb-and-Gluten-Free-540020?columns=5&position=3%2F13). Definitely helps with the PMS cravings.

My favorite chip replacement is pork rinds. They are so good with sour cream or just on their own. I get this kind.

u/angriggs · 2 pointsr/xxketo

I use this collagen because it's cheap and has 60 servings: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y5K54F9/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've used Vital Proteins before, and while I love what they stand for, I don't have money for it. Even on auto-ship it's too expensive for me. Zammex's brand has 9g protein per serving and it's enough to help me get closer to/meet my protein macro daily.

Sorry i don't have any advice in the other areas. Best of luck to you!

u/hellohexapus · 1 pointr/xxketo

I have the Ozeri Pronto scale which I find to be very accurate to the gram/mL. I purchased it based on the "Best Kitchen Scales" review by the Wirecutter (it was their best budget pick) a few months ago and find it useful for basically everything, from cooking to making Ketochow to making sure I'm putting exactly 30mL of cream/half and half in my coffee every morning :)

u/EnnuiWoodpecker · 1 pointr/xxketo

I am a huge fan of free weights to machines. Gimmicky lady-gyms (if I'm thinking of the right one) suck and give women the COMPLETELY wrong idea about weight lifting.

GO TO THE OTHER GYM. Let your trainer teach you what's what and don't worry about the bodybuilders. Literally, they don't care you're new and aren't ripped. I've never met a serious bodybuilder who doesn't LOVE talking the ear off someone just starting out. They are probably the most supportive people in that gym, I promise.

I try not to bother other people when I'm at the gym because I think it probably comes across as condescending. But if I could hug and high five every woman that came in and ignored the treadmill and went to the dumbbells, I absolutely would. (I do high five strangers at the gym, I'm not going to lie).

Weightlifting cures what ails you. I'm only doing keto because I really think it'll help me improve in the gym, too.

This is a FANTASTIC book if you really want to get into lifting:
http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Rules-Lifting-Women/dp/1583333398

u/modular-origami · 3 pointsr/xxketo

I recommend this book: https://www.amazon.com/New-Rules-Lifting-Women-Goddess-ebook/dp/B004IE9RGC

TL:DR; lift like a man, you won't get "too big".

The author recommends pushing and pulling movements which use many muscles at the same time, and is all against isolating certain muscles, or working on small muscle groups independently (think bicep curls).

I've been weight training following the book's advice for a couple of years, and it works like a charm. My weight training sessions last for about only 30 minutes, twice a week, so very little time commitment. The rest of the time I do yoga (twice a week).

And yes, I do this on keto. No carb cycling or anything. You will not eat your muscle.

u/bomphenom · 3 pointsr/xxketo

Yay! So happy for you! I LOVE my spiralizer and use my scale at least once a day! This is the scale I have - it's simple and gets the job done.

u/FrasierSpeaksKlingon · 2 pointsr/xxketo

What's the longest stretch you've had at keto without a cheat? Meaning, the longest you've stayed at or near your prescribed macros of carb and protein? Honestly, if you make yourself stay at it without cheats, the urge to cheat will fade. But I do understand the social aspect of things makes it pretty difficult. Luckily for me, I am a boring person who doesn't go out too often. I bet if I spent every weekend with awesome folks and awesome food, it would be hard to stick to keto religiously.

I'm not sure of the solution to your inquiry, but I think you have to be rigid with yourself, at least until you know you can reliably a) always pack keto food with you on your outings, b) eat a few bites of forbidden food and just be okay with that, c) abstain from all of the forbidden items and be okay with it.

Not sure about the macro question, but I'm just now reading the Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living (link) and if you only maintain around 50-60% of calories from fat instead of keto levels of 70%+, that's when the damage from carbohydrates can really kick in metabolically speaking. But on the other hand, if you overeat calories you will probably gain weight. So I'd say it's a dilemma.

Sorry for the long post - good luck to you!

u/Lunafeather · 1 pointr/xxketo

Okay, so I ended up buying a magnesium citrate/calcium powdered supplement (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BPUY3W0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1P546TAL7E4CV), well a sample version. The recommended dose is 2 heaping teaspoons. I followed suggestions I had seen that said to only take a 1/2 teaspoon at first; I took 1/4 teaspoon yesterday morning with the plan to take another 1/4 at night. I had a pretty loose stool a few hours later but didn't know if it was the supplement or something I ate prior. I forgot to take the other half. So this morning, I took an entire 1/2 so I wouldn't forget, and a few hours later, had really bad diarrhea. There's only like 225mg in 2 full teaspoons, so I'm not sure if I just have to really slowly ease into using it or what. Any thoughts?

Also, will I feel the positive effects of the magnesium immediately or does it take time?

I'm tempted to just buy the magnesium glycinate pills I was originally going to get...

"I don't really care for sweets" --usually works better for me than "can't" but YMMV

This is my go to protein powder, but I only use it on days when I'm not really in the mood to eat meat. It goes pretty well in coffee and I even had some mixed with peanut butter once and I couldn't taste it at all.

If you don't have one, buy a food scale on Amazon and weigh, weigh, weigh everything you put in your mouth until you get a true feel for what portion sizes actually look like.

I have this one. It's cheap $12.11 and very effective. https://www.amazon.com/Ozeri-Digital-Multifunction-Kitchen-Elegant/dp/B004164SRA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1496749490&sr=8-3&keywords=digital+food+scale

I use this electrolyte powder that I ordered on Amazon to make up for the missing supplements. There is no sugar but it still tastes pretty good!

I take two of these at night about an hour before I go to bed https://www.amazon.com/KAL-Magnesium-Glycinate-Chelated-Servings/dp/B00013YZ1Q. they are pretty big but if you place it on the length of your tongue like | not --- they go down smooth with a big gulp of water. Everything goes well in the morning.

I drink Lyteshow and while it's not a powder, it comes in liquid form and you just squirt it right into your water. It doesn't have any additional flavoring or sweetness and does have a salty taste to it, so if that's not your thing then adding a packet of Crystal Light, or something similar will solve it. I like that it's more than just salt. It also contains Magnesium, Zinc, Chloride, Potassium, & Sulfate.

I bought this one, it's a little more expensive at $20. I chose it because it comes with a cleaning brush, which I can also use for my water bottle straws... those are usually $4 so it seemed like an extra bonus compared to some of the other spiralizers.

LyteShow forever. It is wonderfully salty and sour and recommended by marathoners and hangover-sufferers alike, and I have had zero "keto flu" while guzzling it diluted in trenta-size green teas and waters. Get the three pack if you like it: https://www.amazon.com/LyteShow-Electrolyte-Concentrate-Rehydration-Magnesium/dp/B00EISFBYA

If you want to lift, I recommend The New Rules of Lifting for Women. I'm currently finishing up phase 4 and it has really improved my muscle tone. If you're not sure how to do an exercise (although the book has diagrams), ask someone who works at the gym to show you.

Microwave Pork Rinds soaked in German butter with a little Cholula dripped in there. This is especially great when we don't have time to cook or I feel cravings coming on.

Oh boy, this is pretty rotten. You do tons of research, you're a biochemist, and your boyfriend still needs to mansplain to you that you're a big dummy for falling for a fad diet that doesn't work? This is really disrespectful and undermining.

I'd tell him it's not up for discussion, PERIOD. And, if he insists on going at you about a well-researched personal choice of yours, that you'll consider it very disrespectful and act accordingly.

If he has questions about keto, tell him to pick up "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" and educate himself a bit.

I may be coming off strong, but I get so upset when I hear of men undermining the well-reasoned choices of their wives/girlfriends especially when they don't have any facts to back up all of their opinions. You're doing something healthy and positive for yourself. Don't let him drag you down.

Less than a dollar a bag (at least from my viewing area) and very tasty.

Glad your fiance is feeling better. Chest pains are scary!

Blegh. I got some lite salt last weekend and tried pouring it into my water because I have heard people say they do that. Apparently I should have put some flavoring in there, because even though I thought it was a small amount of salt for 24oz of water, it was pretty much salt water. And I was determined to drink it! So, that was gross.

This stuff: Elctro-Mix is my godsend right now. It has ZERO calories & carbs and it isn't crazy sweet like other powders. It has a tart flavor, I hate when drinks are super sweet and fake tasting. I drink 1 in the morning with 12oz of water, and keep a pack on me jic I crash during the day.

Someone on another thread just recommended this one to me. I've been looking for a more affordable option for that too.

Seconding lite salt. It's about half sodium, and half a blend (primarily potassium, but also some low magnesium counts). I make "ketoade" with 1/4 tsp lite salt and a squirt of Mio Electrolyte and drink 4ish 16oz glasses a day. You could just add the salt to Powerade or anything else you're drinking and see the same effects. Here is a picture of my MFP where I created a tab to track electrolytes. You can see how much sodium and potassium I have consumed after drinking 4 servings of each of those yesterday. I also supplement with 400mg magnesium glycinate before bed every day. It makes you sleepy. I like this brand because the others seem to cause me tummy trouble.
