BetterTouchTool is an app that makes creating custom functions for input devices really easy. I know you said you have it, but I'm writing about it here as a lead in to my next Gotta Have It item. BTT is for creating hotkeys for your keyboard, custom functions for all kinds of trackpad gestures, reprograming what an Apple Remote can do, and a heck of a lot more. One of my favorite custom gestures is 3 finger swipes. I have 3 finger swipe left and right set to switch tabs to the left or right. BetterTouchTool is free, but even if it cost $25, I'd still highly recommend it. This app is awesome.

Flirc isn't exactly a Mac app, but it's one of my favorite things, and it's worth mentioning here because it can be used to turn a universal remote into a keyboard, and it works great with BetterTouchTool. Flirc is a usb dongle with an IR receiver that learns remote control buttons, but your Mac sees it as a usb keyboard. In other words, plug in Flirc. Launch the Flirc app to teach Flirc what you want a remote control button to do. For example, have the Play button on your remote trigger an F8 keyboard key press. Whenever you press the play button on your remote, your Mac does an F8 key press. It's pretty amazing! You only need the Flirc app for teaching the Flirc dongle remote control buttons. Once you've set up your remote, you don't need to open the app because your Mac sees the Flirc dongle as a usb remote. If you're like me, you have a multiple component universal remote for your TV/stereo/etc, and there's probably an extra component set sitting unused. Assign those functions to your Mac. I made a series of smart playlists in iTunes, and I have the 0 through 9 buttons on my remote set up to start playing those playlists. Volume up/down obviously controls the Mac's volume, plus mute, and the media buttons, etc. But you can do anything, especially if you use both BetterTouchTool and Flirc.

BetterTouchTool + Flirc = AWESOME home automation potential using something as simple as a cheap universal remote like this.

I ended up tightening my budget quite a bit on this new home theater, so some of my choices aren't as nice as what I had before, but I'm very happy with what I got in the end. I want to thank everyone who gave me advice in my last post here. It was all very helpful!

I went with a 65" Samsung 120Hz smart TV. I decided against getting the 240Hz because I couldn't see a difference between the two when looking at it, and the 3D makes my wife sick in any case. That saved me almost $500.

For the receiver, I took everyone's advice and opted away from the all-in-one set I'd been looking at. Instead, I got a great price on a Pioneer VSX-824 that I've been very happy with.

I know the Denon reciever is what everyone recommended, and it's what I bought at first, but strangely enough my PS3 didn't work with it. It worked just fine connected to the TV directly, and other devices worked with that HDMI cable and port, but the PS3 just told me to go fuck myself. A quick google search told me that it's a flaw in the way the HDMI handshake works with Denon receivers, so back it went.

I went with Pioneer speakers as well, hooking up a
pair of tower speakers for front left and right, a pair of matching bookshelf speakers for the rear, and the matching center speaker.

The subwoofer will have to wait, for now, but the plan is to purchase the matching subwoofer when we're ready.

Instead of the Harmony Ultimate, which didn't seem to get any good remarks, I opted for the much cheaper Harmony 650, which has made my wife very happy. No more frayed tempers about what button does what on which remote. I'm even buying my parents one for Christmas.

I'm hugely pleased with the upgrade over my previous setup, even if it's not everything it could have been. What do you all think?

Not really a "bad", because there some powered towers out there, but they tend to be of either really crappy quality, or REALLY expensive.

So, for $100 you are somewhat limited in your choices. You'll probably end up with something in a D or T class amp. Don't worry, those classes don't mean much outside of technical stuff. Nice thing is that both are digital amps, which are smaller and lighter.

Cheapest, and as far as I am concerned, best bang for the buck, is the Nobsound Mini BT. I like them because I have owned a couple. Chinese made itty bitty amps that deliver enough wattage to get pretty loud without breaking the bank at all.

They come with an internal DAC so you can connect straight to USB if using a computer. Also come with a 3.5 headphone jack to 3.5, or 3.5 to RCA so you can hook up a CD/BR player, a turntable if it's got it's own internal preamp, or most anything else like an Amazon Echo or Google Home. It has no remote, so if that's what you need you can get an add-on device.

Another idea, if you have the room is a stereo receiver. Gives you more input and is pretty robust with a remote and all. This unit is higher quality than the mini-type amps and is about the cheapest full sized receiver you can get. I'd probably recommend this unless you are sure you want to go for surround sound in the future.

Harmony Remote 650 or 700. They are identical, except the 700 is rechargeable (both use AA batteries, but the 700 has a built-in charger). The 700 has been discontinued but you can still find them pretty easily.

I have one of each and have been really happy with them -- I'm using them with Roku 2XS, Roku 3, Samsung TV, LG soundbar, Sharp TV, a set-top digital antenna box, my XBOX360, bluray player, air conditioner, etc... it's all programmable via a webapp and highly customizeable as well.

The Harmony series operates a little different from "normal" universal remotes. Once you have your devices defined, you create "activities" that use them. Push the button for an activity and the remote figures out what settings need to be applied. IE "turn the TV on and to HDMI1, switch the soundbar to optical2,set the volume controls to soundbar, the menu & arrow buttons to ROKU, and dim the lights to 40%" -- it makes it REALLY easy to use.

Ok. So you don't need to push a ton of wattage through your mains and a decent, but not insane, sub will do.

   When it comes to these two subs, it's a crap shoot deciding which to get. Velodyne and Klipsch subs are both fantastic. I'm leaning, personally, towards the Velodyne. But that's just me.

   It will replace all the remotes in your system and make switching from TV->Games->DVD much easier with Macros.

I like the hub (companion and elite both work with the hub) but I'd go with the basic remote if I were you to save some money. This one is great and it includes a hub. The only thing the companion adds is some smart light buttons, so it would be fine too if you want those extra buttons. I have the basic Harmony remote I linked and the much fancier Harmony Elite, but I end up using the little remote more often. The elite is overkill unless you have more than 6 devices running to your TV/AVR and the touch screen ends up being a bother sometimes.

Edit: I saw you talking about using a tablet below and wanted to mention that the Hub will work with multiple devices so you can use the tablet or the remote as you see fit. I think the basic remote is definitely worthwhile as I like the physical buttons and easy operation, but you can still use your smartphone or tablet to control your devices too. The hub is $70 by itself so you might as well pay $77 for hub and a remote.

Pelican waterproof laptop and gun cases. Heavy, pricey...but waterproof, durable as hell, and with a lifetime warranty.

Android phone - with Swype, and LogMeIn Ignition (if you need it for your job).

A Thermarest self-inflating sleeping pad...great for camping, or crashing at a friend's place, or living without furniture (though the bed-in-a-box someone mentioned is also sweet and pretty much a necessity if you've got a gf/bf...I ordered the queen sized from Walmart and it was perfect).

Wire shelving/carts. I buy the commercial-grade ones at Lowes Hardware with the big casters (wheels) and use them for TV/computer stands, easily-moved storage, etc. Some of them fit easily in closets and make great clothing-organizers (haven't had a stupid heavy 'dresser' in over a decade). When you move you can use them to transport your stuff to your vehicle, to an elevator, etc., and they make great furniture dollies too.

Outdoor remote power switches...the outdoor models are 3-prong and the indoor ones are usually 2-prong (and thus useless). Plug a power strip into one of these and hook all your computer stuff to that...button press turns all those 'vampire' power adapters and bright LEDs completely off.

Kleen Kanteen...stop buying bottled water and drinking out of plastic. Whether it's 'BPA free' or not, stuff just tastes better out of clean stainless steel and it lasts forever. Buy a Brita filter (or pitcher) if your tap water tastes like crap.

Kindle is the second-most useful gadget I've owned (after my Android phone).

And, finally, the best lube you'll ever find is Wet Platinum (silicone based). The stuff lasts forever and never gets sticky.

I dont even know where my original fan remotes are anymore. Two are Hunter Douglas, big ones like 52”, and one is something like a Fanimation fan or something like that.



The fan itself is inconsequential. Depending on where you live and the home improvement stores you have, you will find after market fan controllers. Some of those should work with Harmony, too. I personally have never needed to tinker with those but I heard there is a forum out there somewhere where they’ve mapped what controllers work with Harmony.


It would probably still just be easier to call the Harmony support people and reach out to the support folks for whatever fan you’re looking at to see what they say.

Next to the echo the Harmony is probably the second most bang for our buck. The voice controller is nice but I've really come to love the fact that it's Bluetooth and not line of sight. It seems small but it's so handy and I grown now when I have to use someone else old-school remote :)

Got one for my mom and she loves it. Great gift for $50 if you don't mind setting it up. Amazon link.

You might also be able to do it on Windows, but I've always used Linux. Linux is more customizable, so if it's an old outdated computer then you can configure it to basically only run XBMC without all of the other stuff in the background, and hopefully you'll still get decent performance even though the computer is old and slow. Not having all of the background programs running and slowing it down really makes a difference. I'm doing this with an old laptop from 2007 with screen problems, and it works for me.

Yes, but it requires an adapter. Most flat screen LCD/Plasma/LED TVs have a VGA port (blue computer monitor port) built in. That makes it easy because you can just hook up the TV to your laptop as if it is a regular computer monitor. An old CRT TV probably only has the red, white, and yellow RCA hookups and the coaxial cable. That means that you are going to need some sort of an adapter, like this. If you have the red, yellow, and white inputs, then you are good to go with regard to video. If you don't, then you will have to get an RF modulator to convert the video to coax.

If you are unsure about your ability to get it running, then it would be worth trying first before buying this stuff. You should be able to get it running using your current external monitor without having to buy anything. Once you get it running, then you can buy the adapter if you want. It is only needed for hooking the computer up to the TV.

After that, you are basically good to go but you will be using your computer's speakers for sound. If you want to use your TV speakers for sound, that is easy to do. Just get something like this and plug one end into your headphone jack and the other end into the TV.

And if you want a remote control, here is the exact remote that I'm using. Any USB remote should work. I basically just chose the cheapest one I could find. I kind of like it, though, because it allows me to control the mouse as well.

Sounds like kinect is on par with the cost of a universal remote but instead uses ultra useful voice commands and also turns your smart phone into a universal remote. Sounds like a great deal and great value for only 100 bucks

Does it have to be motion control? My experience with them has been that they're awful to use. I find a touchpad works a lot better. Maybe you've a different use case than I do.

I use something like this. They can control volume just fine, but you'll need to make sure HDMI-CEC passthrough is enabled on the Shield, and whatever equipment you have for audio accepts CEC. I, personally, do not like CEC because it can often get confused and start turning off the wrong thing, stuff like that. I have older components though, so maybe it works better on newer stuff?

I used one of those controllers for Keyboard/Mouse struff. But I use a Harmony remote for most stuff. I don't need the keyboard/mouse all that frequently so it just sits on the end-table. The Harmony remote controls a Flirc that's plugged into the Shield. Between the Harmony Remote and the Flirc I can use the remote to do just about anything. It's really amazing. You can even macro multi-key commands, assign them to a specific key, you name it.

Harmony has some newer remote systems as well. They look like they could do just about anything, you might want to look into that.

Lastly, Google's Android TV Remote App has a touchpad to.

Again, if you really need motion control, I'm not sure. I've not had luck with those.

If you have the kinect, you could have google say "xbox turn on", but I feel like that's silly.

I'm kidding, sorry, I've got to assume you don't have a kinect. I echo others on here, get a harmony hub. There's a bundle on amazon that often goes for far less than the hub by itself - Logitech Harmony Smart Control with Smartphone App and Simple All In One Remote - Black.

I actually got this as a gift for a friend who lost the remote to her tv. I ended up liking it so much that I got two for myself (although for my living room I found a refurbished Elite that's a wonderful remote).

So I'm currently using my Pi3 as a retro gaming unit. It works great and I love it.

I'm hoping to also use it as a Media Center moving forward. I've read that I can just go into the Retropie settings and install Kodi from there and it will run like one of the systems on Retropie. Is this true? And will it work well?

Also from there I'm hoping to just buy a external HD and keep all of my media on that. Will Kodi be able to access it fine being run through Retropie?

Lastly, could anybody recommend a remote to use with Kodi. I'd prefer not to use the app on my phone and I'd just like a physical remote. Something small and simple. I found this one. Is it any good?

Yes, but with a caveat. The Harmony Hub on its own can't turn on the PlayStation 4. In the default configuration, the Harmony Hub will connect to the PS4 via Bluetooth as a remote, but for whatever reason it is unable to send the signal to turn the PS4 on (it can put it into rest mode, although it uses a series of button presses to navigate the menus to get to the rest mode option from the main menu, and may or may not work depending on where you are when you request to turn it off).

That said, there is a Sony licensed third party IR receiver for the PS4 which can turn it on. You can in fact combine this IR receiver's controls and the Bluetooth controller built into the Harmony Hub to turn on the PS4 (via IR) and put it into rest mode (using Bluetooth commands).

You should be able to do this, although it is going to require some custom programming the Harmony app. You'll need to setup a new Activity for each, which not only turns on the devices you need and sets them to their correct inputs, but then sends the necessary button commands to the Apple TV to get to whichever app you want to launch. So long as you can always get to the app with the same series of button presses this works fine.

I have a similar setup in I have ceiling speakers hooked up in my living room that function as my surrounds when I'm using my receiver and as ceiling speakers when I play music via Sonos... On to your questions:

4. You have a lot of rooms that you plan on using in-ceiling speakers with. Do you want them to be able to play independently and/or different sources? Having Sonos Connects for that many rooms is pretty pricey. Have you considered something like Niles, Russound, Elan, etc? I'm still not sure what the problem is or what you need, but hopefully I've given you some options to consider.

My first gen can't control volume. There is an option for it in the menu, but it doesn't work... so I'd presume it only effects the analog audio output.

I have a Sony universal remote that I've been very happy with, but I'm fairly certain it's discontinued. I got it open box at Best Buy around 5 years ago. Hard to go wrong with a Sony. Any unit with a learning function will do. I'd go with this one which is apparently just an update to the one I have. It's on the chunky side, but assuming it's similar to the older one it has good range and a great button feel. You can also program macros, like powering on multiple devices at once, and you can set the volume buttons to always do the same thing regardless of source selection.

I just moved my Receiver, Shield TV, Xbox One, & PS4 into a closet. I don't really watch movies on disc any more since ripping all of them and using plex media server on the shield tv. I do play video games, but it's not that big of a deal to switch discs. I LOVE not having any blinky lights anywhere in my field of vision. It really helps add to the illusion of a movie theater and helps my mind just focus on the screen & sound.

I use a Logitech Harmony with hub to control everything. I place the hub in the closet to control everything in there, then use one of the included IR repeater wired right outside the closet door to control the projector. I always like the Harmony One/900 but they stopped making them, it's been replaced by the Harmony Touch, which is a good remote but lacks physical number keys, which IMO is a crucial feature of any decent universal remote.

Logitech still sells the Harmony 650, it's got a rechargeable battery and is pretty much the same thing as a Harmony One, but uses buttons around the screen instead of a touchscreen like on the One. But you can get it for $65, instead of $300 give or take.

I hope you don't mind I found some examples. Onkyo TX-SR444 $319. Monoprice 5.1 speaker set $150. Logitech Harmony Smart Control $70. This will get you something to setup and learn with and it should sound better than what you've had before with a ton more options. The Onkyo has great built in software and a mic to help do some automatic speaker calibration. You can also tweak it manually when you learn more. You can add rear speakers later if you want 7.1. If after a while you find the fronts/center aren't "full" enough you can add something like this and this. When I got started this really helped me out. Reading and research and asking questions helps a ton! Enjoy.

I don’t have that particular model, but I do use harmony hub based remotes and they work wonderfully. They link up with the roku over IP, so line of sight is never an issue. As someone who's used a Touch/Ultimate One ($120USD for this is a pretty solid deal) for the past 4+ years, you get used to the nav controls being at the top. In fact I don't even notice it anymore, the hand shift is so second-nature. The back is contoured to be held nicely in either position (think how a N64 controller works, for example -- it looks stupid, but it's comfortable in any position).

True enough, and they're not wrong. But you can often find refurb sales at really good prices. My last two or three Harmony remotes have all been refurbs and they were perfect out of the box. And hundreds of dollars cheaper.

The Shield remote is a minimal button remote similar to a Fire TV or Apple TV remote. But it has a touch slider area that can be mapped to things like Volume control or gestures (at least it can be done on the Shield itself; not sure if you can do that on a PC). So while it only has 2 or 3 buttons and a d-pad, the touchpad gives more control than you'd get with an Apple or Fire remote. Probably a pain in the butt to get working on PC, though.

And I 100% agree with you about phone interfaces, or anything non-tactile. I rely almost entirely on muscle memory, and while I do use my Harmony's touch display, it's for rare tasks or tasks where I'm fine with looking at the remote, like switching Activities or starting everything up for the first time. I'd never use the touch screen for nav controls, for example, even though Logitech has a gesture screen just for that.

I think it depends on how much you brew. For me, a HERMS System and temp controlled fermentation are overkill for something I do 6x per year.

I'm doing what you described with the Harmony Home Control (Amazon link) and IFTTT.

What you do is setup the Harmony device with "Activities." So for example I have one Activity called "Watch AppleTV" that turns on the ATV, turns on the receiver and switches it to HDMI3 out, then turns on the TV and switches it to input1.

Then you login to IFTTT and add your Harmony and Amazon Echo accounts to IFTTT. Then you make a two IFTTT recipes for each activity. So I made an activity that turns on Watch AppleTV and another that turns off Watch AppleTV. You run these from the echo by saying "Alexa trigger run on the AppleTV." You need to say trigger to the Echo knows to send it to IFTTT. After about two seconds the command runs from the Harmony and you are all set.

The key is you need to make a Harmony activity on the Harmony for everything you want. Then those activities show in the dropdown list for Hamony on IFTTT.

The only one I'm not sure about is your up/down volume idea. I think you could make a Harmony activity for recover volume up then an IFTTT trigger to match. Then another activity and trigger for receiver volume down. I just use the Harmony remote for volume.

Do you happen to live near a Fry's? If you do, they have the Andrew Jones Pioneer set of speakers go on sale pretty regularly. The center usually goes for $50, a pair of bookshelf speakers for $68 or the single tower speaker for $68 as well. 2 pairs of the bookshelves and the center, plus a Monoprice sub ($100 + shipping) and you've got a really nice 5.1 setup for about $300. Or if you wanna go even bigger, get the two towers as your front L and R speakers for an extra $70.

Use the remaining $200 and find a 1-2 year old receiver on ebay or Craigslist. Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha and Pioneer all make solid products. Just do a little research on the specific model to make sure it does 4k HDR and all that.

Finally, a lot of people recommend the Logitech remotes. They're nice, but they're also expensive and can be overkill for some users. The harmony hub works with both. The remote can be purchased with it as package. You can also control things with your phone and you use your phone to program it.

Having both is great. I can do tv/movies by feel with the remote, but I can also fire up my system from the other room and start playing some music without getting up to find the remote.

I just got this one recently and it’s great. It hits every device in my entertainment center without direct line of sight from the IR blaster and the remote doesn’t need line of sight either it uses a radio signal.

The ultimate remote. Literally.

I bought one of these when I moved in with my now wife a few years ago. She didn't like my collection of remotes and remote keyboard, she just wanted to be able to turn on Bravo. Best thing I ever did. Automating activities makes turning things on/off correctly a snap. For a keyboard you can get one of these. Whatever you turn on that accepts a bluetooth keyboard - PC, PS4, Fire TV, whatever - the keyboard is automatically connected to it. I wouldn't try playing Quake on it, but it works great for web browsing. Battery in the remote dies? No problem, open up the Harmony app on a phone or tablet and work it that way while the remote charges.

I've since set up cheaper Harmony Companions to control the bedroom TVs, since I use Xbox 360s as media center extenders for live TV. My daughter has some Philips smart bulbs and it controls them as well. Overall I've come to love Harmony Hub based products, they just work.

I installed the Netflix Windows 8 application and XBMC.

I then installed OblyTile and created a custom large button at the Start menu/tile interface for XBMC (needed to customize the tile with the XBMC logo, but wasn't tough). I also added the Netflix tile right next to it, large as well.

I installed Chrome (browser of choice) and created two smaller tiles that were links to bookmarks in Chrome, YouTube and Google Music.

Change the background of the Start/tile interface to something dark with a little bit of a pattern. Looks very clean and crisp.

I use a Logitech K400 right now. I have a Logitech 650 and Flirc I want to finish setting up, but I haven't had the chance to tinker with that aspect yet.

Overall, Windows 8.1 and XBMC + Netflix works really well. The Netflix app is stellar and XBMC keeping XBMC full screen (hitting "\") and just hitting the Windows button to get out of it/go to Netflix is very smooth and user friendly. I prefer it over the Apple TV and my Ouya by far.

And I built it with the very affordable Intel NUC DN2820FYK, which accepts 2.5" HDs.

I’m a big fan of the Logitech Harmony Companion. Beyond being able to integrate with tons of other smart devices, the remote just feels great.

If size is an issue, SMSL Q5 Pro and SMSL AD18 are small amps with multiple inputs, a sub output (no bass management crossovers/filters though), and a remote. I own the former. Massdrop has had them for $85 and $110, respectively, but neither is an active drop right now. Otherwise if size isn't a problem, look at accessories4less for refurbished AV receivers.

You didn't mention a budget but for powered speakers and sub, the JBL LSR305 and JBL LSR310S sub would be great. proaudiostar.com has the combo set right now for $480. However, you would need a way to control the volume - best bet is an active preamp but most of them are as large as a receiver and can be quite expensive (try craigslist). A passive preamp such as the Schiit Audio SYS would work but no remote. An RCA splitter would allow you to sent use a sub with the Edifier. Still, I'd go for the JBLs or a passive setup over Edifier.

If I was going to spend $50 on the Harmony 650 I'd rather spend $89.99 on the Harmony Home Companion/Control. I bought mine used like new in a box from this particular Amazon reseller and it was all basically brand new and setup in less than 30 minutes with the hub and an external IR blaster.

I use this for my xbox one AND my 360.(I have two of them) I have to point it at my xbox one rather than my kinect, so that tells me kinect isn't required, and look at that. NUMBER BUTTONS! It works with your TV, sound system, and console. It works like a dream. You can set volume lock so once you choose one volume source, the volume buttons will only change that one source regardless of what input you're on. Also you can learn buttons on a single basis. basically, since numbers have no use on my xbox, but my cable is plugged in through it, i assigned the numbers to affect cable, so that I can be on my xbox input, and use cable all at the same time. Just pick it up and use it. So simple and easy once you set it up. Takes only about 5-10 minutes to do so, and it's so much cheaper than other Universal remotes that can do the same thing. It will even pause and play my chromecast! (I'm not paid by them, I swear. I just LOVE this remote, because it makes my life so easy.)

So, it MUST be in progressive mode (there's a "progressive" button at the top). I'm not sure when progressive mode is made active, but it looks like that mode isn't added to each game until it is fully archived (ballstreams uses the DVR flash (many 3mb files) to instantly archive). Once you start loading the video in progressive mode, you'll see the x GB file available for download.

Though I prefer this method, you have to wait some time before its available. Last night, I found myself just using Flash DVR with my computer hooked up via HDMI. Worked like a charm last night and I was able to efficiently get through about 4 full games and watch 4th quarters of about 5 others. If I could download the file in progressive mode, I would be even more efficient (because skips/jumps would happen instantly in VLC, but they take about 3-4 sec in Flash DVR), but I didn't feel like waiting that long. But this is more info than you asked for.

A remote control will work by sending out pulses of infrared light. There is a sensor on the device - TV, DVD, stereo, yes, even your ceiling fan - that can see the IR pulses, and reacts accordingly.

You can actually see it yourself. Point any IR remote at your phone's camera, press a button, and you'll see the LED in the end of the remote lighting up.

Each device has a specific set if pulses to react to. This means you can have multiple devices, but only have the one remote control one device.

A universal remote will copy these pulses. Devices like the PUCK will have pre-programmed devices you can control. The PUCK has the feature that you can control it via Bluetooth with your smart phone.

If your smart phone has an IR blaster you can download an app like Suremote and have your phone work as a universal remote.

I have a very similar remote to this one. These type of "learning" remote has the added advantage that if a button isn't working correctly, you can programme the universal remote from your existing remote.

This isn't bike specific and doesn't have a microphone, but I taped one to my top tube and it works great to change track, pause, adjust volume, and can also be used as a remote for the camera. It doesn't look as hideous as it sounds once it is on the bike and is easily switched from bike to bike with electric tape (I bought colored electric tape to match the colors of my frames). I've also been caught in the rain and snow, spilled sports drink all over it and it still works great.

I dunno, I'm happy with my $50 Logitech Harmony. Programming is tedius, but once that's done I don't have to touch it again. Controls multiple devices from a single remote and supports macros.

But my favorite is still my trusty old Harmony 550. Then again it didn't cost me $400. For that much money I'd expect it to cook me breakfast too.

Lights: I prefer switches over smart bulbs. I have a lot of the GE toggle and dimmer switches.

Entertainment: Logitech Harmony remote with the hub integrates well. If their setup is simple, the Companion is decent. If it is more complicated you might want something with a screen like the Elite

Security: I think Ring is more open, Google seems to be locking nest down so it doesn't integrate with other things as well.

Additional things: Look into getting a fire tablet and running Action Tiles. I like it to see the status of everything and know what is on/off at a glance. Thermostat, Smart locks, garage door opener, sensors on other doors/windows are other things that can be added in the future.

I have the Harmony Hub/Smart Home. It is the boring looking remote, but don't let it's loks fool you, it is one of the most powerful. You can also use your smart-phone too, which is nice if the remote is JUUUUUUSSST out of reach. :)

You probably have a Harmony Hub based remote which has been available down to around $100 if you dig for it. That line has been discontinued and replaced with a nearly-identical line of Harmony Home Control devices. The new Harmony Home Control line hasn't been discounted anywhere that I am aware of, outside of a trade-in deal from Best Buy.

The Home Control series adds the ability to interface with some HA devices like Nest and SmartThings. They have promised that an upgrade for existing Harmony Hub users will give them these capabilities sometime "early [this] year" (it was "late [last] year" at one point, so don't hold your breath). It has also been noted that this will not be a free upgrade.

What about getting an RF remote for your receiver. It is pretty low tech but it would easily let her lower the volume to a level she can sleep with from her room.

The harmony expansion remote may go through walls.

Another option could be Tasker. Like during a certain time of day you get her volume buttons on her phone to be able to control the volume in the Harmony App. Not sure if this is supported but I hear Tasker can do some crazy things.

I think it is better to look at it from the perspective that Google Home uses the SmartThings(ST) Hub vs the other way.

ST works w/ zigbee and Z-wave. If you need to control those, you add the ST to google home and it connects wifi to those protocols. If you don't have any zigbee or Z-wave devices, it doesn't serve much purpose. Not sure if it is logical, other than for battery operated devices(wifi consumes more power) but I dislike wifi smarthome devices and get Z-wave or zigbee if possible. What type are your lights, switches or plugs?

As far as I know, you would need 3rd party software to accomplish switching monitors such as MultiMonitorTool. Assuming you have windows 8 64bit, here is the direct link.

seriously one of the best things I have for my "game room" one button press and it switches to the system on I want to play, to the correct HDMI on the receiver, while turning the other system I was playing off. It was inexpensive on black Friday @ BB for about $20-25 some years ago. It controls 8 devices including, at the time a bought it, the PS3 ( needed an $10 adapter though). Really easy to set up and they still work perfect. Been almost 10 years.

The problem you're going to have for the PS4, and maybe the PS3 I'm not sure, is that only the game controller and the PS4 Universal Remote can wake up the PS4 or turn it on. The Harmony remotes can control it but not turn it on.

There is a new IR Receiver for Harmony but I have no idea how good it is or if its even out yet. I was going through this exact problem with trying to watch Vue, Tivo and control my TV power and AMP volume. I eventually ditched the Tivo and got a Shield with HD Home Run and use a Harmony remote which works great, and save the PS4 for gaming.

This Rii one works well for me. There is a TV program button so you can reprogram the IR to match the TV and soundbar remote. I have 2 of the bottom buttons programmed to control my sound bar, 2 set to the netflix shortcut button and another app, and the USB dongle plugged into my smart TV with Kodi installed. The air mouse is pretty neat too but it doesn't always work right. Also the instructions are lacking a little but I really enjoy this remote especially for the price. I think there is a bluetooth pairing option as well but I have yet to use it.

Okay, I can't pick just one, so I present you the following. As you'll notice, all three are practical items, but that's because most people would/could use them all.

Most comfortable keyboard I've ever used.

Best remote control ever. Seriously, this thing is easy to program and can be customized any way you want. It's only limitation is the 5 device limit, but that's still enough for most (even me!). This is the model I have, but you may find another model by the same brand that better suits you.

This umbrella is not only head-turning cool, it's also really great quality that's above and beyond what you would expect from something that looks like a novelty. It's even cooler to me because I actually do Japanese swordsmenship, and the other members of our club/dojo are jealous.

Hey, maybe we can do better and simpler than Bluetooth. Aside from Bluetooth compression messing with the sound quality, it can introduce lipsyncing issues due to lag. I always like a wired connection myself whenever possible.

You should be able to plug something like this into the TV's optical output, plug the M-Audio monitors into this, and then control the volume w/ the TV remote.

Only reason I say "should" is because on my Sharp TV, the volume level of the optical output is fixed by default. You have to flip a setting in the TV's menu to allow the optical output volume to be controlled by the volume setting. I looked in your TV's manual but couldn't find any information about whether that's the case... it's possible the volume level on your optical output isn't controlled by the volume setting. But hey, at $12, maybe it's worth taking a shot.

Why not get get an all in one like the one I use or this one maybe this is more to your liking. A couple more essentially identical and awkward options are this one and this one. There's more choices too if you didn't like those, take this one for example or if you just want to have some fun (doesn't have keyboard, consider it an honorable mention). These are links to universal remotes with a keyboard on the back. Some have trackpads like those found on laptops, while some use an "air mouse" (think Wii control). Some use regular batteries (AA/AAA) while others use built in rechargeable batteries.

About a year ago I started looking around for a way to control my TV and HTPC with one remote. I originally wanted to go with a FLIRC paired with a Harmony control to use so that I could use WMC (with Youtube, Hulu+, Netflix and Plex "plugins"). Ultimately I decided against it due to the lack of a keyboard. After looking around I stumbled upon these. I went with the Rii due to the form factor and the WAF.

I am mostly pleased with this setup but there are a few kinks, most notably the battery. At first it was great, no batteries to swap out and it held a charge for about a month before it was time to recharge. But now, a year later, I have to recharge it every couple days. It still works fine but I don't know if I should buy another one, try to replace the battery when it does die, or try something different. There is no way EASY way to open it, and honestly I don't think it could withstand to many battery swaps since it's made of this flimsy plastic. Truly think I'm lucky to have had it as long as I have.

Another thing is that the buttons themselves feel indistinguishable from one another which makes night time use/viewing a bit difficult, wish there was a backlight. I'd also like to mention that I have an issue with the mouse.

As mentioned earlier the mouse is similar to using a Wii, with one difference the Wii pointer only goes to where you aim the control. This mouse works with relative motion to move the cursor. Imagine you just scrolled the cursor to the far right corner of your monitor, you can keep moving your mouse further right but the cursor won't move any further. That means if you did a 180° then you'd still be controlling the mouse even though you are now facing the wall. This makes navigation a little frustrating. Add to that the mouse's sensitivity mixed with no stabilization makes clicking and dragging a chore. Never realized I had a shake in my hands until I held this remote. I remedied this by simply disabling the mouse in Windows. I realized I wasn't using it so I disabled it.

The last thing I had issues with was that there is no real concrete instruction manual. Just some small quick start guide. After spending some time with it, I rather enjoyed experience.

Honestly. Get a harmony hub anyway. I freaking love my Harmony Ultimate. If you have multiple devices you can use it to switch between all of them with ease. I also have a receiver, so switching manually before was just a hassle... Like 4 different remotes driving me nuts. Now I use one.

Using an app called IFTTT allows you to control Harmony using Google Home or Google Assistant. I use my PixelXL because I'm waiting on the nVidia Spot.

One downside to Harmony is you lose the "magic mouse" or whatever LG calls the pointer. I am not using LG's remote at all. It's not too bad because all I need to use the TV's interface for is switching Picture Mode to Game for certain games.

I say, "Okay Google, turn on the XBox." which I typed myself, so you can make it whatever... and my TV turns on, the receiver switches to the right input as does the TV. The TV turns on. And I'm good to go. You can also type out a response that Google says. When I do it my response is, "Okay... I prefer the PC, but hey... nobody is perfect."

With punctuation, Google Assistant delivers it with the right amount of sass. It's great!

Gotcha, well you can still get the basic hub+remote for $135 it looks. I have this, but never use the remote really, cause everything is exposed as switches to my other systems.

There's plenty you can do if you know how to code, but if you aren't writing plugins for HASS you can get away with just learning some basic YAML pretty much, and there's tons of useful resources on the website.

I use this sensor for a lot of things, including temp/humidity. It's also got a light sensor, if that would be in any way helpful there as well. It shows up in HASS with the assortment of sensors that can then be tied to whatever automations and such.

I use the hub with all my streamers, for the remotes I use a mix of the 'companion' remotes that came with the hub, harmony touches and smartphones.

I really do hate the layout on the harmony touch... just hate it... I got em cheap in a hub pack at costco or sams... and one on clearance so I put up with it.... That said, pretty much any universal (even the older harmony 650 IR only remotes) will work with the apple tv... in fact your TVs remote likely will control it... just make sure you have HDMI CEC control enabled on the hdmi port the apple tv is connected to.

You will need to keep the siri remote charged and handy to force close apps... there is no real way to get to the app browser with universal/hubs yet.

Yeah, this thing seems like a team picked and chose features from other boxes including the formfactor of a Roku remote with a sideclick attached to it.

All communication is RF based to the hub so no line of site needed. The incl remote uses bluetooth or you can use the smartphone app anywhere on the same wifi network. My fave part is the remote customization, you can literally map any button on the remote to any function on any device you want using the app to set it up, as well as having 3 unique profiles on the remote for different activities. You can even set buttons to run a sequence of commands - for instance DirectTV Now Guide can be accessed with a series of keypresses in the android app, but no hotkey, I setup this sequence and assigned it to the Guide key so when in the app my wife can hit this key and the guide pops up! Maybe this is a little much for all you need? But the nice part is, it should work with anything you pickup down the road. Set my parents up with DirectTVNow (streaming cable with local stations) and an Amazon Fire on each TV. They pay $50/month for more stations than they had with Comcast cable. Had to keep Comcast Internet ($70/month with land-line phone line. They do not want to get rid of land-line) because ATT internet is too slow in their area. They tend to go over the 1TB Comcast limit, which adds $10-30 to the bill, but it’s still cheaper than the $230 they were paying to Comcast each month. Yeah, my cable box/DVR powers itself on to record scheduled programs, but it does not shut itself back off when the recording is finished. This is what throws my system out of sync all the time. I had thought about grabbing one of those Roku Sideclick remotes, but got a great deal on the Harmony remote so I gave it a shot first.

Years ago there was one of those home shows on TV and they were in a celebrity's house, the person had this remote that looked like a tablet running some sort of custom firmware that controlled everything in the house. It was TV remote, shut the blinds, dimmed the lights, flushed the toilet, you get the idea. I always wondered what the heck it was, and if I could "roll my own" version of that. Some crazy stuff out there for sure.

It's a bit expensive, but I just bought this older version of the Harmony Hub remote system, and it's been pretty useful turning everything on and off. If you also buy an Amazon echo or echo dot you can use this remote to voice control the TV on/off too.

For my living room HTPC I use the Logitech K830 which is quite expensive, but looks nice and does and excellent job.

For music and stuff on my own HTPC, I use a Bluetooth remote which is basic, but cheap and good enough for what I use it for.

You've thought this out pretty well. I'd probably only change a couple of things. First would be to look into getting a networked HDHomeRun DUAL over a USB tuner. I'd go with this one because you'd be able to connect it to any computer in the house over LAN. If this wouldn't benefit you then a USB tuner might suit you better.

And the second is I wouldn't necessarily change, but you might want to consider. The chromebox ships soon, but we don't know yet if we'd be able to load any other OS on it yet. My guess would be yes. Other chromebooks have had success, but we just don't know yet so I wouldn't commit just yet.

The only other issue I can see is Plex might have an issue transcoding to play on your devices, especially the Celeron based chromebox.

Edit: Oh, and for wife proofing, I've got a Harmony 650 and FLIRC IR dongle that makes controling my TV, receiver, cable box, and HTPC easy

you want the hub primarily for the wifi capabilities so it works with Smartthings or your other wifi devices that you may use. The hub also lets you connect it with alexa so you can turn on activities, change channels, volume, etc. As you mentioned, it does also allow control for stuff in cabinets

OK, so for remote I use this with a flirc. That way I have a truly universal remote with physical buttons (better for operating in the dark) for not a lot of cash. I do have a Logitech K400 for the rare times when I need a full keyboard.

For a case, I have the Silverstone ML03B. Small form factor and really blends with the other components. Depending on your CPU, you may not even need an aftermarket cooler. I have the i3 4130T with a stock cooler and it's dead silent. I built 2 years ago, and at the time, the only gaming I was doing was emulating old-school NES through some Gamecube. EDIT: So I only used the intel integrated graphics (HD 4400). /EDIT If you do want/need a GPU, you'd need a half-height to fit the case. Just last week I picked up a GTX 750 ti. It improved Dolphin emulation dramatically, and runs Skyrim at 1080p on Ultra settings at 60 fps.

Alright, the problem here is your TV has no variable or line level RCA outputs. I'm going to offer a couple of options:

1. An optical DAC with a remote line level controller and powered monitors. DAC, Remote volume control, Really good sounding powered monitors. Wait til they go down to about $240 for the pair or buy them on massdrop now, you have 9 hours to decide. Totals to $300
   
   
2. Same setup as above, but will switch out the JBLs for something cheaper and totals to about $200. Wait til the Micca PB42X are in stock at amazon. They run $120. If you can swing for the JBLs, do it though.
   
   
3. The best option in my opinion, would be to get a cheap 5.1 receiver with an optical input. You can pair this with any pair of passive speaker you want, you can purchase a used receiver from craigs or ebay, you can add a center channel at a later date, and more importantly, you can add a subwoofer when your budget allows and have proper bass management with high and low pass filters and eq.

It's really easy to set up, the wand is a remote control wand which can be set up to any one or multiple infrared devices, mine is set to control the TV and the candles. It uses gestures to control stuff, great for changing TV channels/volume etc.. It can have, I think, 13 different gestures set up and works quite well too.

The candles are battery powered remote controlled candles. I attached clear thread to them and blue tacked them to the ceiling.

No need to spend this much.

Just so you are aware I also bought One S on Black Friday for the UHD apps (guess I should've done research first), but hardly any of the apps support 4K. The only apps I'm aware of are Netflix (if you subscribe to 4K), Vudu, and obviously the 4K Bluray app. YouTube and Amazon do not support 4K.

I ended up finding a good deal on a Roku 4 and went that route. My Sharp TV's apps don't even support 4K content. Don't buy Sharp :(

I'm using an Inteset which looks the same as a cable remote but works fine, about $25 controls volume, mute, tv input and all the apple functions.

However for me I don't like that its so large so I'm getting an Xbox replacement remote to setup, its a lot smaller., $18 to try and it'll separately control tv volume and mute.

The Harmony express looks great but $250 is too much to spend on a remote imo.

2. In the Harmony app, add your devices (TV, Roku, etc).
   
3. In the Harmony app, create activities for "watch plex", "watch youtube". Basically they turn on the tv, set the input to roku (hdmi2 or whatever), then tell the roku to start a specific roku channel.
   
4. In the Smartthings app, add your Harmony hub. It will find the "watch plex" and "watch youtube" activities.
   
5. In the Google Home app, add your Smartthings controller. Now Google Home knows about those activities also.
   
   So I'll say "hey google start plex" and it will reply "ok starting the watch plex" (yeah, bad grammar) and then do the right thing. I still use the roku (or harmony) remote for choosing shows, pausing/forwading, etc. But it's handy to be able to use Google Home voice commands to start/stop things.

Since you already bought the Q5 and the remote seems like an important feature to you, i must say that the included remote is kinda chintzy, generic device thing that needs much better aiming than a usual TV remote does. however the Logitech Harmony line of remotes does work with the Q5.

I bought the hub+remote combo used on Amazon for $69.99 . I wasnt sure what to expect because I've never bought anything used on Amazon before, but it was fulfilled by them so I thought I'd give it a try. Logitech harmony companion with hub is perfect for what you need. you can probably do fine with getting the warehouse deal version if you dont mind getting it "used." the warehouse deal is hit or miss. usually as good deal. but the return process is always really easy with amazon.

Or you can just go to bestbuy or target and get it price matched.

You can control this setup with any standard IR remote. The hardware has a IR sensor and is pre-programed with xbox media center IR commands. So if you get a XBox Media Center ready remote or Harmony you're good too go.

So you can get a cheap $10 remote or $$ remote or even use a bluetooth keyboard...

The 650 is cheap (I just bought another one new for $20), but it doesn't have RF or WiFi. First, if your TV has a composite input, just use that. Composite to HDMI converters have spotty quality at best. What model TV do you have? Do you have any other equipment with Composite inputs? A HT receiver or a VCR/DVD combo with HDMI out?

As for a remote, Logitech Harmony remotes still support laserdisc players. This is the one that I have and it operates my Pioneer CLD-D406 perfectly.

It's all you need, I never even use our remote anymore. It was lost for a good week or more and I never missed it.

My wife is probably the bigger user, she's usually got the baby in hand and it's very helpful to just be able to say "turn on ABC" or "turn the TV up."

OK, I get that - there are a lot of options that, frankly, I don’t really understand what they do. I think I have a relatively older iteration of the remote. Essentially, what you need is the Hub and a remote. The Hub accepts all of the inputs from your harmony remote (or the app on your smart phone) and then sends that signal out to the corresponding device whether that be via an IR signal or a signal over Wi-Fi. They seem to have a number of kinda crazy remotes now with touch screens etc. but I think that’s kind of ridiculous and overkill. I’ve had the simplest version of the remote for years and never felt limited.

If you’ve got a basic level of technical proficiency, the app makes it very easy to add all of your devices and then set up an activity. The main one I use right now is my “Watch Apple TV” activity which , with one click on the remote, turns on my Apple TV, turns on my TV, sets it to HDMI 4, turns on my receiver, sets the receiver to the right input, and then controls Apple TV for most things and volume on the receiver. You can then go in and customize the remote buttons to do things that aren’t the “default” setting, like the colored buttons on the remote I use to switch between stereo and surround inputs.

If you have Alexa, you can just tell Alexa, “Watch Apple TV,” which is also ridiculous but pretty cool.

The Harmony Companion has been a life changer. It's reliably responsive and is remarkably comfortable to hold. It's a significant price jump from the remotes in the review, but I wholeheartedly recommend it if you have other boxes and smart lights.

Logitech Harmony Smart Control.

I have two. One setup is a TV, a Vizio Soundbar, a TiVo, a Mac Mini and a Roku, the other is a TV, a Denon receiver, a Comcast cable box, an AppleTV, and a Xbox One. I have a Harmony for each setup. Works fantastically with both.

I did have to buy one extra IR blaster, beyond the one that comes with the setup, but that was mostly due to placement issues with one of the boxes. Otherwise, for my use, I'm able to easily control iTunes, PLEX & VLC from the remote. I did have to edit the default configuration as by default, the Harmony puts the Mac Mini to sleep when you power everything off - this wasn't something I wanted done as I wanted PLEX access from anywhere.

I use a HTC Bluetooth Music Streaming Stereo Clip Adapter plugged into the aux port. It's not the cheapest solution, but I like it because it has an internal battery and supports the apt-X codec which is lossless.

I also use a Satechi BT MediaRemote which I've used velcro to stick it to my car dash. That gives me easy access to volume, next and previous.

Yes, you could use a laptop to serve as a media center pc. A laptop will probably have an HDMI out port, which you can hook up into HDMI in on the TV. You could also use a tower PC, which would [probably] give you more connection options such as VGA and DVI. That's it, really. Just access the dropbox folder on the PC and play the videos. If this PC will be on a network and there are other PC's, you could access that [or network attached storage] instead of dropbox; not relying on internet connectivity.

Something like this might work for control, but it's best to use mouse & keyboard.

I spent $50 for the one that I have, brand new from amazon it only supports 5 devices, but it works pretty well.

the software for the computer though, that gets a little confusing, as there's a couple different versions of it, one for regular users and one for 'power users', I apparently fall somewhere in the middle, as I don't care about the millisecond delays on key presses, but I do care about the menu layouts on the remote.

I do not believe you can do that. I snagged a sideclick (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRFY61G/ref=psdc_3236443011_t1_B01N32WC5H) and it works great. You have to set using the TV remote or one that is already setup with the TV functions. You can set any function to any button the remote. I even use it with the new Alexa remote with volume and power since I set a button for sleep. Good luck.

I know this isn’t what you were asking. But I was in the same situation and bought this remote instead. It’s awesome, just like a normal universal remote but can also control Xbox. Great for Netflix and Blu-ray.

I use a harmony hub and smart control, which has been on sale as cheaply as $58. It controls the ShieldTV over bluetooth for zero lag. The hub itself has extremely powerful IR blasters to handle devices that can't be controlled over IP or bluetooth.

The remote is RF, so you don't have to worry about pointing it at the TV. It's all buttons, no screen, which I strongly prefer, and lasts well over a year on a single coin battery.

It does not support voice control (but the ShieldTV gamepad will do that, if you have one) or air mouse. You can use the Harmony app on android/iOS or the AndroidTV app for that matter to do that stuff. The apps work as a keyboard too.

I think Logitech also made an adapter for the ps3 that lets almost any of their IR remotes control the ps3. That is not made anymore, so you would have to find one on eBay or something, and I would confirm that it will work with the remote you want before you buy it.

I agree that you absolutely want the one with the physical remote. Best universal remote on the market IMO. There is no reason to get the fancy Elite model with the LCD screen unless you have a million devices. I actually prefer the one without the screen because you don't have to recharge it. It has a coin battery that from my experience lasts over a year. Only downside is it's not backlight (hence the great battery life), but it's easy to control by feel.

The Harmony Hub remotes will work today, the IR ones don't.

Depending on your usage requirements, this maybe be better than any phone integrated ir blaster. It's a network connected ir blaster with very good mobile software. (it also has a remote control, but you don't need to use that.) It's great.

Everything is controlled from a Harmony remote which makes it all still nice for anyone to use.

First advice, confirm what outputs your TV has to see if you will need something that can manage the volume or not.

One of the things that causes frustration on he harmony remotes is you have to keep the remote pointed for several seconds during the initialization sequence of turning on all the components. The best way around this I've found is one of the harmony models that are RF based. I'm currently using the harmony hub that comes with the simple remote. It lets you control with the remote and smartphones.

Is the one that I'm using. Best Buy recently had refurbished units for as low as 79$. If you don't want to spend $100 on it, you can order FLiRC and set that up to work with any remote (harmony or otherwise) that you want. I think those are only around $30 or so.

Harmony Companion (US / [EU] (https://www.amazon.de/Logitech-2015-Harmony-Companion-Fernbedienung-Schwarz/dp/B014GXQ3S4/)) should be fine, check the Shield setup guide. You can program 6 most used activities to remote buttons (3 + 3 with longpress) with others available in mobile app which is also used for setup and configuration. The hub supports max. 8 devices which should be enough for most use cases.

Minuses:

• smart home (=orange) buttons can't be remapped to regular activities/devices
  
• buttons aren't backlit

Here's the solution for that problem. Not only will it control all of those devices, but you can program start up and shut down sequences for activities such as watching a blu-ray or TV. I use it with my projector, receiver and PS3 and it works flawlessly. The battery ran out on the controller, and I've been using my phone lately without any issues. It will only show virtual buttons relevant to what device / activity you're using, which is helpful too. I'd highly recommend it, especially for the current price.

there are no codes provided when you get the item

You have to find a "code database" online on their site and it has the basic sections and none for android tv, android, nvidia etc so i asked for the code here.

The contoller did come pre-configured for xbone and seems to work with all the buttons i've tried (again haven't used it much yet)
As far as NASTV it works the same. Its pretty smooth thus far. What little buttons i've tried have worked.
One little thing though the IR on Shield must not be that great as i cant point it outside like a 45 degree view of the box or it won't work.


Also be carefull too beacause i read on their forum that they recently put out a 2nd revision controller that is indentical to the prebious one but has Shield TV support is supposed to be pre-configured. In my process i have ordered both. The one without Shield in the title and one with.
Neither are pre-configured. So i am just keeping the 1st one already with the code and working.

Simple setup and day to day use.... and no matter what activity you’re doing, the volume controls will always control the receiver.

I have had a great experience using YTTV on Apple TV. However, using the Apple TV remote with it is very difficult. Therefore, I recommend getting this remote instead and programming it to operate your setup. It really made everything easier to use.

This is what I have. It comes with the remote. You do the setup with your phone, but you don't need to phone once you program the hub. You can use the phone app as a replacement for the remote if you want. (I don't)

I misunderstood what you were wanting, you want Kodi on a tablet and a remote for the tablet. The hub is not what you want. It sounds like you already have a bluetooth remote and it just isn't working with Kodi. You could try experimenting with Keymap to solve this problem.

I have to ask though, for a mobile device, is the touch interface in Kodi not sufficient? Are you watching the tablet from across the room or something?

This is really all you need, IMO. Watch for it to go on sale. I got mine a few weeks ago from Best Buy for $99 or so. I used to have a Harmony One, and I do not miss the touch screen at all.

You should upgrade to the Hub. The One is no longer supported. The Hub is $60 on Amazon right now with the screenless Harmony remote.

I solved that problem: I bought this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001Q9EFUK/) off of Amazon a couple years ago, hooked it up to a lamp.

Ever since then, I've been able to climb into bed, get comfortable, and then turn off my lamp and doze off happily into a deep slumber.

In my room I have this setup; my PC is connected to an A/V Receiver that goes to TV out, a usb infrared mce sensor (not this one), a logitech harmony 650 universal remote and a kit of philliphs hue lights for software I use eventghost and ScreenBloom to give a touch of ambiance to the room, with all things set up I just press one button on the harmony remote and it turns on the A/V receiver, tv, run the ScreenBloom app to fade the lights and opens steam in big picture, I also have some shortcuts for the SC Chord button to control the lights while gaming.

although I don't know if it would work if you stream your PC to TV with Steamlink or the like, since my setup is for a PC that is directly attached to and in proximity of your TV.
