I started a business. I can't really be specific because it's reddit and I say wild shit on this account. I got fired from this illustrating job and I thought fuck this guy I'm gonna do it on my own. We make specialized stickers for like engineering purposes. I probably make a little less now and got maybe 4k in debt, but I own my own LLC. I found a way to undercut my old boss and spend my days rocking him on social media and trying to steal his google top spot. It feels really nice too, I work from home, I have a partner who used to work with me at the place I got fired from. We put a lot of time into it and learned a lot - I would suggest everyone try to start their own business if they have a good idea and the risk tolerance to try it out. I am out here invoicing on paypal, running my money through quickbooks, finding new customers, hitting up youtubers to sponsor them with free shit for a review of my product, bombing twitter with memes that my target audience would like because fuck it I can.

It was hopeless as fuck for a long time. I learned photoshop at 15 and I'm 30 now. That whole time I was selling pot to survive and doing jobs where I got fucked and exploited and underpaid. I started this biz 6 months ago and we are finally turning a profit with nice margins. I had shit credit and my business experience before this is selling drugs. This is why I can't be specific here lol.

If you are an illustrator I can give you some advice. Learn branding and marketing, get yourself a youtube, a website, and get on communities. Learn how to make long-tail content, like behind-the-scenes stuff, documentary stuff, "news" articles, to promote. Network and make friends irl and online, they will come in handy. My old custies all have uncles or cousins in industries that I can cater to and I got a lot of great clients that way.

Fuck with Amazon FBA, there's people making dumb ass stickers on there and bagging them up for Amazon to ship and sell and making thousands of bucks off fake supreme meme shit. Get some money together and design a shirt and hit up a smalltime screenprinter and get them to print you 50 hoodies.

Make a website that flips 3 hoodies at a time and only make them when you get an order. Just doing this shit will get you lifted mentally to start doing other shit. I was the laziest piece of shit and now I can still be that lazy piece of shit, but I'm only fucking myself. Working for myself felt like the only way to make me feel ambitious. Whenever I got ambitious at a job I got fucked for it because of office politics or interpersonal shit or just cheap fucking bosses. Fuck that. Go on Legalzoom, 500 bucks, make an LLC, DON'T take out a loan, you're idea might be shit, but if you are legit talented and think you can find a way to market yourself and contract your work, do it.

Learn the shit that intimidates you, but know what your weaknesses are too. I hate talking on the phone and chasing down unpaid invoices, so my girlfriend does it now. You gotta figure out what you are bad at and how much value you can get with help. I'm a firm believer 2 heads are better than one. Me and my partner have it all split 50/50 and if it was 60/40 I think it would cause fucked up tension, make sure your shit is fair and be generous because it's almost always better for business than being stingy.

I'mma edit this and clean it up and answer whatever else you guys want. I'm not rich, I'm actually broke as fuck and live frugally, but I do get to live a life that makes me happier than I ever was working for someone else. I'm blasting Gucci Mane as I'm finishing projects. We take breaks to watch rockets land and talk about the future. I bought a microphone and webcam for the business so we can make video commercials aka I stream video games. I got a mechanical keyboard because we needed it for the products, obviously. I could go on.
