Building on Craigslist/yard sales: Explore the campus housing areas at the end of the semester/quarter. As people graduate/move out of housing they'll probably want to get rid of their furniture and may just dump it on the street. Does your city have thrift stores? They may swoop on some of the discarded student furniture first.
I echo not getting a second hand mattress. In college I got my twin-sized mattress at Costco for ~$250 I think. I slept on the floor, it was fine for 1.5 years. I now have this in a queen-size and really enjoy it. I like firm beds. As Busch said, a mattress topper would also help. I see a lot of ads for the Purple bed and it looks nice, but I have no experience with it.
I got this one and it's great. Better than my previous more expensive mattress and much, much better than similarly priced one at places like Ikea. I got the 8" one, and it's actually wouldn't mind a bit more cushiness.
