I remember in my freshman year of college in 2008, our art school tried to sit us down with discussions on the book 1968, and tried to get our gears going about the war, the election, and the economy. It seemed a bit inspiring at the time that we were here exactly 40 years later facing problems that needed (and still needs) community attention, but it felt more like a coincidence than a mission, and my peers (and-- tbh-- I) vaguely listened to the panels of people pleading us to put our youthful energy into activism. These were very intelligent people, mind you, but they were stating their case to a bunch of bored teenagers who wanted to go out to explore NYC.
I, of course, don't remember much about the panel discussion, but I remember one man who sort of played the devil's advocate, and said something that made the most sense to me. We're too comfortable in our place to be bothered. There's just so little motivation when we would just rather stay in our bitchy, whiny comfort zones.
Of course, that was their extent of their enthusiasm to rile us up. Now we are certainly locked in our own problems to to something now. I'm 60k in student loan debt, and even if I wanted to stop giving a shit about it, my family's tied in it, too. That's why I agree with the first point so much. Feels a little like my hands are tied beyond signing a petition here and there. :(
