I'd be more concerned with having a better grip on tools/parts than the grease or oils soaking in... it's called a fingernail brush. get one.

Regarding the smell on your hands... get a scrub brush.

I use these because they have the nail brush on the top. I've used others but they all work, these ones are just meant for hands so the bristles aren't too stiff. I scrub my hands and forearms up to my elbows in the shower. Never deal with that smell or grimy feeling again.
