I drive a Chevy HHR and a Ford F-150 (1995). I have a UV-5R and a UV-B5. I use a Tram 1181 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018EUB8DU) and 2pcs RF coaxial coax adapter SMA (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L11D7AM). The antenna comes with a long tail. In my car, I run it to the rear passenger door, down the inside of the plastic on the wall to the floor, then under the floor mats to the front passenger seat, and it still has a ton of slack. The Q&A on Amazon says it has about 19' of cable attached. That'll do you for just about anything you want to hook to it.

I found the problem. The thinner coax that goes between the radio and other coax doesn't seem to be carrying signal. Would this work?


Edit: tested it with an led and an arduino as the power source with the coax as a cable and it worked, still no signal though
