Stopping people from self-publishing is a restriction on freedom of speech. If Amazon were to drop their self-publishing services (which they won't because they make money from it), that would be their choice, but I would then search out other avenues for book printing and distribution.

It's not that I don't respect the publishing industry, I just don't believe that they should be the only players in the room. I know people who have been traditionally published, and I think that's great. But I personally like to do my own books without caring about reaching the largest universal audience possible. For instance, I wrote a specifically Pacific Northwestern epic fantasy a few years ago. Why would any any of the suits in the New York publishing offices give a shit about a piece of regionalism that isn't New York? Self-publishing gives me a platform to do what I want without restrictions.
