I bought the AGoT LCG core box, because I've read through the books 3 times.
It was like a wet dream. I loved the art, and book quotes/flashbacks slowed my learning the game.
I realized something after a dozen playing by myself games (I couldn't find anyone to play with).
The game isn't fun unless your opponent also has a core box so they can incorporate the Valar Morghulis plot card into their deck.
Without the ability to kill all the active characters comebacks are nearly impossible, and games can quickly snowball and drag on.
Can you find the board game anywhere for a reasonable price? I've looked for it on Amazon and Ebay and usually see costs in excess of $100-$150. I'm surprised they haven't re-issued it already.
I have the card game myself (also from Fantasy Flight Games), and I love it. I purchased it at the Origins Game Fair this year, but it retails for only $30 on Amazon. The character and environmental artwork on the cards is beautiful (and original-- true to the book, but not based on the HBO series); and in my opinion the strategic elements of the game are involving and accessible even for people who don't usually play board games. People who already play video games could easily pick up the card game if they gave it a try.
