If AMD's thin and light laptops are price right I would consider it. However the current "gaming" notebooks are also quite compact, so at least to me it becomes whether trading that form factor is worth the performance hit.

These are the current offerings out there:

Acer Aspire E15 with 8250U, MX150, $600

Acer Aspire E15 with 8550U, MX150, $750

Acer Swift 3 with Ryzen 2500U, $750

Acer Swift 3 with Ryzen 2700U, $900

A Ryzen 2700U laptop with integrated Vega cannot go for $900. Even the 8550U+MX150 for $750 is on the high side, so where is the justification for a similar 2700U+Vega laptop to cost so much more? Drop $200 on the Ryzen laptops and I think people will start to take interest, and there is a lot of room for these laptops to go cheaper since there's no discrete graphics.

For what you will be doing and looking for , this Acer Aspire E 15 which is one of the most recommended laptops under $1000 and subsequently in your budget range, would definitely do the job for you. It has a powerful i7 8th gen processor, 8 GB RAM, fast SSD , decent display, a backlit keyboard and an exceptional 15 hours battery life. It does have a decent build quality based on experience and with the MX 150 graphics card, light to medium gaming wont be an issue for you.

The best value for money laptop in that range is the Acer Aspire E 15
Newegg Version

  • 15.6" Full HD IPS
  • 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U version i7-8550U version,
  • GeForce MX150,
  • 8GB RAM Memory,
  • 256GB SSD

This Acer E15 laptop comes with an 8th gen quad core i5 or i7 processor which is great for CAD and cpu intensive works (i7 versions costs around $100 more). With the MX150 graphics card you will have a much better gaming experience than with a GeForce 940MX. FHD IPS display is also good for its price

I would recommend Acer Aspire E 15 as it comes with: -

CPU: i7-8550U

GPU: GeForce MX150

RAM: 8 GB

Display: FHD 15.6 IPS screen

Storage: 256 GB SSD,- HDD

Long battery life

It is a great choice because of its great heat management system and high build quality, along with its specifications makes it the best option for your usage and it is within your budget. Though if your work isn't too intense or you don't mind longer time waiting for videos to be rendered you can save few bucks and settle for the i5 version of this laptop.

u/LonerIM2 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would recommend this Acer Aspire E 15 because it comes with everything you need, i7 quad core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 8GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, screen colors are decent, this is the highest color ranges for a laptop screen for this budget, high build quality, long battery life, very good heat management, GeForce MX150 GPU that should be able to handle the work you are going to do on it and will handle most games on low to medium settings with very good FPs, and it is within your budget.

I'd recommend buying this from the us and getting it shipped through a friend or something.
Got it for 53k and the best piece of electronics I own. International warranty too btw :P

Hey now, Linux is supposed to be the OS that has WiFi problems :-p

Funny thing is that I got a new laptop in May and the 802.11AC WiFi worked perfectly the first time I booted Linux Mint on it, along with everything else.

Acer Aspire E 15, 15.6" Full HD, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8550U, GeForce MX150, 8GB RAM Memory, 256GB SSD, E5-576G-81GD

This is the laptop I’m buying. It has a current gen i7 processor (important for heavy projects). It has a ssd for fast start ups. It’s cheap as hell too. I currently have the 2016 version and it still good but this one has upgraded specs I couldn’t pass up.

u/ashberic · 1 pointr/computers

If you can push your budget to $700, get the newer Acer Aspire E15 (E5-576G-81GD).

i7 8550U (4c/8t), 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and MX150. Good little upgrade from yours and at a decent price.

u/graydog3 · 1 pointr/laptops

Sure, but even though the prices seem to be closer, I would still like to know if there are any significant differences.

Aspire 5 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075KCB6TH/ref=twister_B076919RJT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Aspire E15 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075FLJ87G/ref=twister_B076919RKR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

The price difference is even more noticeable on the i5 models.

u/legos45 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Hi,

Since you want a numpad, I would recommend the Acer Aspire E 15, which has:

  • i7-8550U 4-core processor

  • 8 GB of RAM

  • 256 GB SSD storage

  • MX150 2 GB graphics card

  • Weight of 5.3lbs and battery life up to 15 hours

This laptop runs Windows 10 Home. The laptop has a good balance of components for the uses you've listed. Compared to the Nitro 5 close in price, it has lower-power components which may be better in this case because the Nitro 5 will overheat. The i7-8550U and i5-7300HQ are similar in performance. I don't think you really have a major use for a stronger graphics card as well. Otherwise, it should be fine for use on a couch and programming/development should be great on this laptop. It does include a number pad.
u/Dan6erbond · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

So basically you want a fairly portable gaming laptop. The Asus ZenBook and VivoBook series seem to be what you want, although those are a little expensive so take a look at this Acer Aspire.

u/Throwa45673way · 1 pointr/cscareerquestions

Yeah, I tried /r/SuggestALaptop but I was given a very wide range of specs (from i5-8550U to i7-7700HQ processors; from 8GB to 16GB of RAM) and people are more focused on either gaming laptops or light browsing.

My budget is less than 900 USD so I've considered from an Acer Aspire E 15 to an HP Pavillion Power 15.

XPS and Thinkpads are a little out of my planned budget, but if it's a considerable difference in performance I could save for them.

u/xxkid123 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I don't know what specs you need for civ, but just about anything with an mx150 and an 8 the gen Intel should handle league on high easily.

Here's the cheapest laptop that can handle your workload https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-E5-576G-5762/dp/B075FLJ87G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523496876&sr=8-3&keywords=Mx150&th=1

My roommate has the old gen and the battery life is fantastic. It's also relatively portable and the build quality is good enough for what you pay. I also have a very very old version of this from 2014. 3rd gen Intel and a much slower Nvidia 720m. It still runs league on a mixture of high and very high.

Here's a small form factor 15 inch
https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-i7-8550U-GeForce-Windows-S510UN-EH76/dp/B0786TPWBP/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1523496876&sr=8-9&keywords=Mx150

Again, good battery, good specs, decent price.

You can also descend into gaming laptop land, but these tend to have poor portability in the sub $1200 price range, and I don't think you'll really need the performance.

How would this be as an alternative to this model?

Acer Aspire E 15, 15.6" Full HD, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8550U, GeForce MX150, 8GB RAM Memory, 256GB SSD, E5-576G-81GD https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075FLJ87G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_tOVWAbKZHXT3D

I’ve seen the one I linked for $699 but they aren’t offering that price currently

100 bucks over budget but works well for me. Look for similar performance this one is a year old

u/LionAeroStriker · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Okay, here are three candidates I pulled from shopineer, all under 700.

u/glymao · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Interesting. The HP Envy 15 x360 is a solid choice here. It has AMD R5-2500U, 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD. Battery life is about 6.5 hours. BTW it's 2-in-1.

The contradiction here is the screen size and battery life. Most fantastic laptops for office use are ultrabooks with superior design and quality, and therefore, a better energy consumption rate. But people always forget 15 inch ones so they are left with small batteries, like Asus Vivobook S/Pro and Inspiron 5570. That's against the common sense.

Edit:
Acer Aspire E15 is probably a better choice. It's design might be a bit dull but it's trustworthy with a relatively long battery life. At least way better than Asus...

u/Tibrael · 1 pointr/laptops

This is the same version, but with an 8th gen i7 instead. This 8th gen (coffee lake!) i5 is REALLY fast. I have had 0 lag so far and my system cold boots in about 10 seconds.
