A more budget friendly option to look into is something like the Acer V15 Nitro for $915. It has an all black aluminum build that isn't too gaudy looking. It also has pretty decent specs with a quad core i7-6700HQ processor, 960M graphics card, 8gb of ram and a 1TB HDD. The ram and storage are also upgradable. It's 960M will work fine for most games on the market (and excel with light games like Overwatch), but more graphic intensive games will have to have settings turned down. It also isn't too heavy, has a full 1080p IPS display, and an okay battery life.

If you don't think you'll need a quad core but still want a bit of gaming potential (fine for light / moderate games), the ASUS K501 would work fine. It only has a dual core processor though, which may struggle with more CPU intensive games. It has a pretty sleek appearance though, and it's much lighter than most gaming laptops at 4.4 pounds.

On more powerful machines, you could look into the Gigabyte P55W for $1250. It also has a mostly black aluminum exterior with a few white highlights. It is more powerful with a quad core i7-6700HQ processor, 16gb of ram, 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD, and a GTX 1060 graphics card. You could easily play any game on the market with this, and only will top intensity games have to be played with reduced settings.

And if you want something at the top of your budget, maybe look into the Clevo Prostar for $1600. It is also pretty sleek when the RGB backlit on the keyboard is turned off. It has similar specs to the gigabyte but with a GTX 1070 graphics card which is ~50% more powerful than the 1060. It's not completely necessary, but if you're really looking for a machine with a ton of power and you can spare the money, it may be worth looking into.

> GPU that is preferably better performing than GTX 960M ... under 1000$ ... thin

You won't find a thin laptop with a GPU better than a GTX 960M for under $1000. So ...

Maybe the Acer Aspire VN7-592G-71ZL?

  • 15.6 inch, 1920x1080p IPS display
  • Intel i7-6700HQ + 8 GB of RAM
  • 1 TB HDD
  • Nvidia GTX 960M with 4 GB of GDDR5 RAM
  • Price: $950

Under an inch thick, weighs 5.1 lbs. Here is a review.

Weaker GPU, so no.

Pre $1000 a 960m is about the best you can get, might find a 965m somewhere, but hardly the performance increase is worth it.

If you wanted something with an i7 this is a valid laptop http://www.amazon.com/Acer-VN7-592G-71ZL-15-6-inch-Notebook-Windows/dp/B015XBKY6U/ref=sr_1_9?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1453502173&sr=1-9&keywords=965m but you lose the SSD

In exchange you get the same GPU and a better processor.

It had pretty good specs.. and Given that this also has Thunderbolt 3 as well it theoretically cloud support External GPU like the Razr Blade does.

The one I linked is 8GB of RAM I'd personally go for the 16GB(Damn you Chrome....), but thats your call.

I'd skip the ASUS K501 since it uses a very poor quality type of 1920x1080 display. See the thing on the sidebar about TN displays in today's laptops. Might affect your Adobe Suite use in particular, but in general I think a poor quality display can be one of the most noticeable flaws in a computer.

If you don't mind refurb, Check the Dell Outlet for a $900-$999 XPS 9550 with the GTX 960M GPU.

Otherwise, the Dell Inspiron 7559 could be a good pick.

Or, for a better display for photo/video editing (better than the Inspiron 7559 in sRGB coverage, similar to the XPS), this: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-VN7-592G-71ZL-15-6-inch-Notebook-Windows/dp/B015XBKY6U/

If you want it to have gamer specs without looking like a gaming laptop, get this Acer Aspire V15 Nitro .

It's portable, gets good battery life, has a great keyboard, and the GTX 960M would be able to handle your gaming easily. It also has a high quality IPS display which would be very nice for your CAD work.

If you wanted to step up your performance, portability, and admittedly budget, the Gigabyte P34Wv5 would also be a very good choice. It's a 14" laptop that is extremely light for its specs and still retains ~5-6 hour battery life.

I would suggest thisASUS G751JL it is at the higher end of your budget but it comes with Intel Core i7-4720HQ 2.6GHz (turbo up to 3.6 GHz). 16 GB RAM.(double than most of what you will see in this price range)
1 TB 5400RPM Hard Drive.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M with 2GB DDR5 VRAM (G-Sync)(more powerful than the 960 that you will see in this price range),
17.3" IPS FHD matte display (1920x1080) with built in G-Sync hardware.
4x USB 3.0, 1x Thunderbolt 2, 1x HDMI,(the ports that you requested), the only issue here might be the desgin since it will have rear venting design directs heat away.(which I consider a plus but you might not because you don't want something that looks flashy, so you might want to check some pics before you buy).

Another good option is this Acer Aspire V15 it is towards the lower end of your budget, and it comes with Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.6 GHz (6MB Cache)
8GB DDR4 Dual-Channel Memory,1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive
15.6-inch Full HD Screen, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 4GB GDDR5 VRAM
Windows 10 Home, Up to 6-hour battery life.

Thank you both again for your responses. I've done some research, and you guys have it right; the Aspire is indeed one of the best, esp. for sRGB range. I think I'm going to go for it. But I have two follow-up questions, potentially easily answered.

  1. I see a choice between 'Full HD' and 'Ultra HD' - I have googled but to not much avail; I can't seem to get any independent reviews on the difference, just Acer claiming Ultra is 'four times' better or something. Q: what is 'Ultra HD', and what is the real difference between it and 'Full HD'?

  2. What is the difference between the 15.6 inch for $997.00 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015XBKY6U/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza?th=1) and the 17.3 inch for $859 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015XBKYB0/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza?th=1)? Is there any difference other than just the screen size? Why is the 17.3 inch one cheaper?

u/Friendly_HIppo1 · 1 pointr/hardware

Look at the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro black edition.
It's not the cheapest 960 m ever but it is a very good value and is quite sleek. I own one and have gotten a lot of complements on how the laptop looks. Great for my CAD and VM work.

u/splitframe · 1 pointr/gadgets

What do you mean, can't hold up to a desktop (cpu)?

I am positively amazed by the performance of the the 6700HQ,
even so far as to say it would fair well with any game that is currently
released and with DX12 in the pipeline also with many to come.

My roomate uses a stock i5-2500K and my brother an i5-760 and both never had the cpu be the bottleneck.

And come on the Acer is not that humongous with 24mm thickness and 2.4kg weight.

Look I have been burnt by "gaming" notebooks in the past, too. And I don't want to
persuade you that it is also the thing you would want.
I know that TB3 could be a bottleneck, I know that the setup could be
pricier than two systems in the end or that there can be other
issues like microstutter.

I don't want to buy the cat in the bag, too.

My point is just that I think this would benefit me and my needs, maybe it does
not and I hope it more to be than actually is / will be.

But if I put that TB3 cable into it and it plays the Game with the same FPS as if
I had a Desktop with the same GPU and an i5-4xxx that would be perfect for me.

For $960 acer has one with a 960 and a better processor than the dell "Same processor as OP's linked laptop", 2.6ghz vs dell 2.3ghz.

Here's an acer with the same CPU and a 960 for about the same price as the op link.

I'm looking at both of these laptops.

I'm new to the gaming world and want a laptop that will be able to play some newer games without having to sacrifice all the graphic quality.

Dell Inspiron 15 7559, [Acer Aspire V15] (http://www.amazon.com/Acer-VN7-592G-71ZL-15-6-inch-Notebook-Windows/dp/B015XBKY6U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1445722598&sr=8-1&keywords=vn7-592g) or [Lenovo Y700] (http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y700-series/y700-15-inch/)

Go for i7, maybe you will need it for multi-tasking habang nag cocode ka. para sakin kasi hirap mag alt tab at mag games pag i5 laptops lang e. nabibitin ako lalo na pag Chrome gamit ko. :)

Here we go OP.

A few of my reccomendations are below. Most gaming laptops at the 1k price point will be the same. $1000 will usually get you a 15", i7 with a GTX960M.

These specs are absolutely fine to graphically max out games like CS:GO, Overwatch, Gary's Mod, LoL, HoTS, DoTA.

The GTX960M is going to be pushed to it's max running more recent games like Witcher 3, BF1, The Division etc.. but you should be able to turn down the graphics settings to Medium to get to around 60FPS.

Check below.

u/worried_walrus · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Oh sorry for the confusion. We are supposed to either have a device with 'Integrated active digital stylus' which the asus ux501vw does not or a combination of devices that meet the total requirement. People recommend getting something like a bamboo if I get a strict professor that requires a stylus that way I can save money because I won't use the touchscreen otherwise. Battery life is important but I don't particularly care for a gtx 970m because I have a gaming desktop and won't play new games on the laptop. If i play a game it will be on an emulator or something like Halo CE that doesn't need a good GPU. So I'm probably going to decide between either the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH74 or the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-592G-71ZL.

u/intrepped · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

That sounds like a solid job to me lol.

This Dell and this Acer are the only two I could find in your price range.

> I found this while searching and was looking for some other people's opinions and suggestions.

FTFY

And as long as you aren't doing anything like, extremely intensive on that thing, i see nothing wrong with it.

u/The--Technician · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Here is one on Amazon. All I would recommend you do is get an SSD as soon as you can and install such- which would significantly boost the speed and performance of this already decent laptop.

u/shopineer · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Do you mean the [Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-592G-71ZL] (https://www.amazon.com/Acer-VN7-592G-71ZL-15-6-inch-Notebook-Windows/dp/B015XBKY6U)?

Seems Newegg changed the spec description of [Acer 15.6" VN7-591G-792U] (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834315164) to "TN".

u/mihachris · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Take a look at this Acer Aspire v15 Nitro too.
