As others have mentioned, youre gonna want to go with a 1440p monitor over a 4k unless you have a monstrously fast PC. Running games at less than native resolution can look shitty and running 4k at a decent framerate is still tough unless you have one of those brand new nVidia cards.

I have a 970 and can run most stuff at 1440p60 on high or ultra settings.

You're saying you want 60FPS at 1440p but the max resolution on that monitor is 1080p at 144hz. If you want what you wrote you want, you're saying you prefer a monitor with a max resolution of 2560x1440. You'll only get a 60hz one at that price range (this one, for example). Monitors that are 1440p at 144hz will be more expensive

I had that monitor, it's decent. But i upgraded to 1440p and it definitely makes a difference if you have a card that can drive it.

But the dell has a significantly better stand, comes factory calibrated, and has a better feature set in general. If your trying to buy a main monitor I'd go with the Dell.

Before the XPS 13, I used 15" laptops by themselves. This time around, I wanted to try something different: something small, lightweight, and with good battery life while I'm on the go, but with a desktop-like experience when I'm at my desk. That's why I chose to buy an XPS 13 9350 and a WD15 (Dell's USB-C Dock). By plugging in a single cable into my laptop's USB-C port (laptop to dock), I connect my laptop to a 25" 1440p monitor, a mechanical keyboard, a mouse, power (USB-C can provide up to 100 watts of power), headphones, a microphone, a backup SSD, and a micro USB cable (for phone, Xbox One controller for emulation, etc). I also have a highly adjustable office chair with great back support. Then when I want to take the laptop somewhere, I unplug that one single cable, put the laptop in a perfectly sized sleeve/bag hybrid, and go. It's a rather nice setup, especially now that Dell addressed my USB-C stability issues in a recent BIOS update (version 1.4.4 that came out a few days ago).

You make a good point about charging all the time being bad for the battery, but the dock /desktop mode is a core part of my setup and there's not a way to use the dock without it charging the laptop. I suppose I could start unplugging the laptop from the dock each night before I go to bed. That won't entirely fix the problem, but it should help some while still giving me the benefits of the dock.

My monitor for the last few years, an LG W2753V-PF, has started misbehaving. It has trouble turning on (turns on, hits splash screen, turns immediately back off), and the control "buttons" sometimes act as if the monitor is off, even though it's on, preventing me from actually turning it off or accessing the menu.

Point being, I'm in the market for a new monitor. As I have a GTX 670, this puts G-Sync on the mind. I'm trying to stay below $400 as well. My current two candidates are the Acer XB240H(24"/144Hz/1080p/G-Sync/TN) and the Acer G257HU(25"/60Hz/1440p/S-IPS)

I'm really curious if it's worth sacrificing resolution and IPS for higher refresh and g-sync. My main focus is on gaming performance. I'm inclined to go with the XB240H simply because I know my 670 is going to struggle with 1440p, but that is on the line to get upgraded early next year. I don't want to shoot myself in the foot later just because it's not ideal now.

Also, feel free to offer any alternatives. Thanks in advance for any help and input!

At that price range I would consider mixing and matching 2 monitors, get one nice 1440p monitor, you can get a 25 inch one for roughly $240, and a 23 inch one for $200. I would consider picking up the 25 inch one and matching it with a cheaper and maybe slightly smaller 1080p monitor, which should keep you under your 400 price point. A 21ish inch 1080p is close to 90 to 100 and a 23 or 24 is closer to like 120, so that should fit into your budget. You can use the higher monitor as your primary.

If you go up to about $500 you can get 2 of those 25 inches, or for $400 you can get two 23.8 inch 1440p monitors. This seems to be the best case scenario for you, take a look at this

1440p for the 980ti is not overkill. So you are fine there. You can bump up to 16gb of ram. this is also a skylake so more future proof than last gen. You do not need an i7 for gaming. also this gets you a non-shit tier mouse+keyboard (highly recommend cherry mx reds for gaming (thats a keyboard switch...do some research))

And I've noticed that sometimes the cable connection isn't very secure. Usually after securing it I don't have any issues. But once in a blue moon when I'm pushing the Rainmaker the image cuts out and all of a sudden I've lost two ranks :p

Looks great. As for the GPU, wait until the new GPUs are announced and to be honest, a 970 will be more than capable to run AAA games for a while. But, I would recommend the R9 390 because PCMR Hivemind.

For the monitor, if you want a cheap one, there is the BenQ XL2411Z for $274.19. It's 1080p 24" 144hz, but no G-Sync for your 970 I'm afraid. Your build should be able to run basically all games on ultra settings, even CPU intensive ones if you overclock the 6600k.

If you prefer higher resolution (not size) and good colours, I would recommend the Acer G257HU smidpx for $254.10. 25" 1440p IPS and 1ms response time.

If you want large monitors, purchase 1440p or higher as 1080p monitors start pixelizing around 27". But beware you might need to sacrifice fps or higher settings.

Please don't take my word for gospel, do some research and enjoy ascending.

I too am currently looking for a monitor and this seems to be a very good option.

Seeing as it is a 1440p monitor it will need more horsepower but that of course depends on what you're doing. I wouldn't expect to play new AAA games at 60fps on ultra, but maybe on low to medium settings. Also my brother has a rig in which he has a 770 4gb version which can play most games at near max settings on 1080p so take of that what you will. Although if you have the 2gb variants your gaming experience will be reduced significantly considering most new games use more than 2gbs of vram.

So if you have the horse power this could be a pretty good main monitor in your setup. Although I'm not sure how having a 1440p and two 1080p monitors will work in games if you intend to project the image on all three screens, you'll have to research that.

For the SSD, the Adata SU800 uses a reliable 40nm TLC flash like the Samsung 850 Evo and MX300. It's not as fast as the others, but that makes no real-world difference.

For monitors, I'd be looking at 1440p or 120Hz to pair with your 1070; that GPU will be a waste on a 1080p monitor. The Qnix 2710 is a very cheap IPS 1440p monitor that is known to overclock to 100Hz+ fairly commonly; however, it has a strong backlight bleed which many don't like. This Acer is 1440p IPS, doesn't overclock well, but has better picture quality than the Qnix. Depending on whether or not you want G sync, you can get 1080p 144Hz monitors for anywhere between $200 and $400.

The GPU you picked out also doesn't have a backplate. The front of it color matches great, but the back of it (the side you'll actually see through the window) is just a bare PCB. You can get EVGA's best 1070 variant with a backplate for the same price as that Asus; it's a much, much better idea from both a performance and aesthetic standpoint.

As other have mentioned, the ASUS UX430UN is a good option. One thing you should know though is that because the laptop's made to be thin and due to preset temperature throttling, the CPU and the GPU just don't have the option to run at full performance for any significant period of time. This shouldn't affect your data analysis software too much but games would be affected. If you want better performance than this, you should consider heavier, 14 to 15 inch laptops.

As for a monitor, look at the Acer G257HU which can be had for $250 with a 25" IPS display.

I have this monitor and I love it. If you don't need to wall-mount it it a dream. Incredible picture quality.

Although some games were pretty fun and immersive to play at that size, if you're even doing the slightest piece of office work, I'll take a shot that you'll hate it.

The problem with going bigger is that it just makes everything on screen bigger. It still only carries the same amount of pixels as any other 1080p display so it will appear stretched and you will be able to see pixels. You can usually ignore it but when text is involved it becomes horrible. Text gave me a headache on mine.

In response to the other comment, too, I'd try find a middle ground which personally would be 1440p 27". The issue is that these still aren't cheap. For slightly more than the Philips you linked, you can get a 25" 1440p ips Acer G257HU however that is quite a bit smaller than I'm guessing you wanted. I believe there is larger (~40") 4K monitors from Crossover, QNIX or some other funky brand that are recommend here quite a lot. I can't really speak of them though as I've had 0 experience.

I've had this one for a year. You can manually set it to 75hz. I have a 970 and my games have run beautifully at 1440p. It has got screen flicker 4-5 times since I bought it and the stand is not adjustable. For price vs picture quality and Hz, you can't beat it.

They'll both have extremely similar performance, but the one with the 6600K should have slightly better performance. I would DEFINITELY suggest switching one or both of those hard drives for an SSD, that will VASTLY improve your load times and generally make your life easier. I would also ditch the fan controller, disk drive, and peripherals and invest that money in a nicer monitor. Get a cheap keyboard and mouse until you can afford good ones. I recently bought this monitor and the extra performance you get is certainly worth the price. I have the 390 too, and it doesn't have much trouble running almost every game at decent settings.

I just updated the link to the specs, you should see it now. The color gamut was not specified by Acer during the time of writing this post, I was told it was 99% by other users. Alright, I see that the GPU handles 1440p @ close to 60 FPS in most newer tripple A titles & handles games on ultra setting ^1. It also handles tripple A games at a much higher FPS(75-100~) with 1080p, and by extension, esport games (dota 2, cs:go, overwatch etc) at more than 144fps. So the way I see it is that you have two choises:

• Option one: If you care about High details & high resolution in single player games, I'd most def go for a 1440p ISP monitor. This is gonna give you a very gorgeous & detailed look in-games. It's also gonna be very great watching movies on. Something like this monitor, it's around 200 euro on Amazon, but I would try to find it locally to save on the shipping cost.
  
  
• Option two: If your only experience gaming has been on a lapop the first option might sound tempting, but if you wanna play some competative games such as Fortnight, Cs:go, Pubg or Mobas a 144hz, 24 inch monitor with low responds time (1MS) is the way to go. It's kind of hard to explain just how significant the change from 60 to 120&144hz can be, but everything will look way smoother & the gameplay will seem more immersive. In general you're just gonna have a better experience. The details arent gonna be as clear as with a 1440p ISP panel, but it makes up for that with the fluidity of the gameplay itself. Nothing wrong with a TN panel, I doubt most gamers play at angle or in an environment where they are going to have direct sunlight shining on the screen. 5 minutes to find 4 ms is not bad for a $280 monitor.

And response time is not just about how fast the image is displayed and a persons reaction time, response time is the amount of time it takes for a monitor to change the specific image on the screen to the next frame. Play high pace games such as online FPS for example having a 8ms+ response time and playing at full resolution the person will notice blurring, and artifacts as such. This can be disorientating and make for a really bad gaming experience. Thats not even taking into consideration input lag and network lag.

So yes if someone is going to spend the money on a niche gaming setup, i wouldn't recommend a monitor as with such a high response time.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately right now, contrast ratio is really a priority for me. Switching over from even my iPhone 7 at 1700:1 to my monitor at 1000:1 really is a revelation of how much it matters. All of the monitors you suggested are at about 1000:1

Hell, The Witcher 3 looks better on my PS4 on my TV than my 1000:1 monitor on PC at Ultra settings simply because of how much brighter the highlights are when I set the backlight to an acceptable level so the blacks aren’t grey. It’s really far more lifelike than at a lower contrast ratio, when it just looks like you’re looking at a picture printed on a sheet. My monitor right now looks like a music video from about 5 years ago in comparison. And I have the HDMI RGB range set to the full 0-255, too.

That said, both my TV and iPhone are at about 1600:1 contrast ratio and the iPhone is IPS. Which says to me that IPS screens at the top end really can be good enough. I’m really wondering why monitor manufacturers aren’t making higher contrast IPS displays. I would gladly pay a premium even for a 1500:1 IPS monitor. It’s really a travesty that these manufacturers are calling 1000:1 a high contrast ratio when Apple is putting 120 hz IPS panels at higher resolutions on their iPad pros that can do 600 nits and a 1500:1 contrast ratio, and a True Tone feature to boot.

I recommend this monitor as I personally own it and have been happy thus far. Its a little over what you want, but a couple days ago it was on sale around $235-240 since my friend bought it. My only gripe is the lack of mounting holes.

Any advice on these monitors? I'd like to get into 1440 + 144hz.

I am also torn between the monitor listed in the PCPartpicker list and this other Asus 1440p monitor, which is 80$ less.

If you're looking into 1440 and 144hz, check out this Acer. It's really cheap for what it offers, the only downside is that it's a TN panel, meaning that it doesn't have as accurate color reproduction as an IPS panel.

If you're looking for a budget 1440p 25 inch monitor, this one is solid and cheaper, and it's also an IPS.

There are plenty of good monitors out there with good color accuracy. Look for an IPS type monitor as they have great color even at an angle. Be warned though IPS glow is a real thing that can be noticeable on black screens but overall I think you will be happier with than rather than a TN or VA panel.

The Asus PB278Q and BenQGW2765HT are both well liked.

The Acer G257HU is also a good entry level 1440p monitor although it is only 25 inches which is smaller than you want.

Just got a new monitor a few weeks ago for a dual monitor set up. I've noticed that sometimes the screen randomly goes black and to fix it I need to turn off the monitor and turn it back on again. This only happens once every few days usually, so it is not super annoying, but it's still kind of weird. Any idea why this might happen and if there is a way to fix it?

IPS is super awesome. I edit video and colour accuracy is really important, and IPS is amazing at that. Combined with good viewing angles and good brightness, I'd get IPS. Totally worth the refresh rate sacrifice. But it is totally a matter of preference. If you want to be ultra edgy, get an ultrawide ips. The Acer G257HU is an excellent monitor. It's not ultrawide but it's 1440p. Cheers!

Might want to do more research on this monitor to look for how good it is but it is a 1440p 60hz IPS at 25in. I know it's a little bit out of your price range but it's an option.

In addition to having really low pixel density, my current monitor is rather...large. I'd like 27" for programming, but for gaming and reading I think I'd like it to be smaller. I can't see the whole thing at once. And smaller = more pixel density. And more desk space.

25" is really pretty big for a monitor, anyway - most people seem to be using 21.5-23" 1080p. And this thing is really f'ing cheap. Actually, all the 25" ones are cheaper than their 27" brethren.

It seems the stand is iffy, but i generally sit a little lower than the monitor anyway so its slight tilt shouldn't be too much of an issue, lack of vesa mount kind of sucks, but overall it seems pretty good. I have a pretty similar desk space/setup at my apartment (smaller desk, Mid 2014 13" Retina.) It has 1440p resolution so it'll match the MacBook's resolution if you're using it at the highest available setting. It has great viewing angles since it's an IPS display and the colors are gorgeous. The only downsides I can think of are that it is not adjustable (I haven't personally found this to be an issue at all) and the built-in speakers are pretty awful quality (I have some plug-ins but generally use my MacBook speakers.)

If you are fine with 60 Hz, this is likely your best bet. If you are looking for higher than 60 Hz, you will likely not find such a product for that price.

The Acer Predator XG270HU is pretty good, but still a little pricey. The Acer G257HU is a good budget monitor, but it's neither Freesync nor IPS.

I have this monitor and it complements my Macbook Pro really well (even very similar color schemes). Not very expensive, and 1440p looks great compared to 1080p.

This is 60Hz but you might be able to overclock it to 75Hz. It is IPS too so it should look great.

Well all the monitors Im considering are 144hz...so its not the refresh rate that differs, its the resolution/size that differs. All the higher res (1440p) monitors are 27 inches. After about an hour with this MG278Q, I'm thinking 27 inches is overkill.

I bought with a 390 gpu upgrade and it's been pretty awesome. For the price I'm happy with 1440p at 60fps, considering that with my GPU I probably couldn't get it much higher. Very happy with the purchase.

I think by FPS you're referring to how may it can show (Hz), which in that case possible to somewhat overclock monitors. If you're into FPS, I would recommend sticking with a higher Hz.

Third-Party 1080s are already coming out (IIRC) so you can probably find them in 1-2 weeks. The new AMD GPUS are being announced on the 1st, and will launch mid-summer (or earlier).

G-Sync and FreeSync do something different. Instead of limiting FPS, they actually adjust the Hz of the monitor. V-Sync is the original - what this did to reduce or eliminate tearing (when the monitor is receiving a new image before it can render the previous one, causing a de-sync image across the monitor) is simply make it so that your computer wouldn't output more than 60/120/144 FPS (depending on monitor Hz). G-Sync and FreeSync both actually move the Hz of the monitor around - if you're at 120 FPS, the monitor will display at 120Hz. 78 FPS? 78Hz. FreeSync works through mostly software, while G-Sync requires an expensive chip (sold by NVIDIA) to be implanted in the monitor (hence the price jump). This is a 27'', 1440p, G-Sync monitor...$$$ This doesn't have g-sync or a super-fast response time, but fits the size build otherwise. G-Sync is outrageously expensive (team red FTW, cfx, freesync).

Eh - You could go for that audio, and it would work. However, I really do think that people benefit from nicer audio. Gaming headsets are okay, but for the most part offer sub-par audio and a shitty mic for their price point, in exchange for "gamery" aesthetics. Something like the Audio-Technica M40X are around $70 and will give you very, very good sound. If you need audio to go along with it, you can either pick up a new audio cable with a built in mic (m40x have detachable cables) or something like the antlion mod-mic.

Get 2 1440p 60Hz monitors instead of another PS279Q. Keep them on either side of your main chick. I suggest ASUS MX27AQ if you want 27"( You can easily convert this into a surround gaming setup btw when you want to) and Acer G257HU if you don't mind 25".

Yeah it is a tough call between the i5 and i7, well I thought they would overclock to about the same but the i7 would still have an edge? I was looking into the 1440 and 144 hz monitors but their prices are quite high. I found some at $400 but they average about $550 and that's a bit steep for a monitor at the moment. However I did find some decent 1440 60 hz, which seems fine to me since I don't do a lot of competitive gaming besides LoL. Overwatch is just for fun. OK, for example, the Acer G257HU is at a solid 5,600 MXN, so it gets out of budget for now. Aside from this one, most QHD monitors are ranging from 7,000 to 10,000. Are these prices points normal, or should I start cursing the resellers?

oh okay gotcha, [this monitor] (http://www.amazon.com/Acer-G257HU-smidpx-25-Inch-Widescreen/dp/B00QS0AKVK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462905705&sr=8-1&keywords=1440p+monitor) is pretty cheap and 1440p and ips for good colors, which will alow for a more expensive gpu, 150 dollar gpu will not handle 1440p. i would reccomend an r9 390 if your psu is up to the task or a gtx 970 if not, even though it would be out of 500 bucks, it is really the starting point for 1440p unless you are playing less demanding games in which case a 380/380x would be good.

is a 1440p monitor worth an extra $100 over a 1080p monitor? Gaming at 60 hz for both, and the most intensive game i'll be playing is overwatch on ultra. Will be getting either a 390 or a 1070. These are the two monitors I'm looking at:

This monitor reaches my max size and max resolution. I'll be happy with a 2k monitor as well, i'm not looking for a 1080p monitor.

I'm planning on using a 2nd monitor for my laptop (970m) that will help me do architecture programs, movie watching, and videogame playing. So I care a lot about image quality and performance. Let me know what you think.

I have two acer monitors both 23.8 inches. One is 1080p 60 overclocked to 75 just fine. Other is 1440p 60 does not overclock.

That CPU is going to bottleneck anything reasonable past what you have, so I'd suggest a rebuild with a budget of around $900. Complete overhaul except case (which you may want to change, depends on what you have atm)

You may want to get a new 1440p monitor like the Acer G257HU or ASUS PB258Q to take advantage of this GPU.

Otherwise, if you want to stay on the same platform, I'd recommend adding some more RAM (2x4GB kit of DDR3), a 240-256GB SSD, and an Rx 480 or GTX 1060 GPU. I'd also recommend a new PSU. This would cost you between $350 and $400 USD. However, your CPU will bottleneck your setup.

Check out this monitor it is cheaper and uses the same ips 1440p panel. The main difference is that it doesn't have vesa mounting but you can purchase an adapter.

I found this pc at costco for $1299. Its the 16GB ram, 1TB HDD, 256GB SSD if that doesn't come over in link.

I tried to match the parts in it and couldn't come close. Its for a friend who wants to game the latest games at pretty high settings.

So is this a good buy? If so Whats a goof 1440p monitor to pair with it? I found this one to be pretty well rated, just worried about screen tear on FPS. This is the one they pair with it if you want to spend the dosh on it.
