With your budget, you can certainly make 1440p work. A gtx 1080 would be ideal for that. I would recommend going with a single 1440p 144 hz Gsync monitor rather than 2 144 hz monitors.

For gaming, I don't see a real need to have 2 monitors. I'd rather pour more money into a single amazing display because your game will only run on one of the monitors. If you need more real estate for work and productivity, then get a cheap second monitor.

I'm pretty sure there's room to save some money here too, but I'm on mobile and going to sleep, so maybe someone here could help trim some dollars.

The XB271HU and KG271 are of exactly the same dimensions. AND XB271HU is one hell of a good monitor.

Suggested you a triple monitor arm, too.

This is my setup.

Hope this fits your or someone else's needs.

u/RoguelikeDevDude · 14 pointsr/Monitors

Welp. At least it was only THIS monitor that was ruined. No big deal right? Lol.

In all seriousness, I was going to sell everything when I move abroad next year anyway. This just means I won't get much for it. Oh well.

u/the_t_hole · 12 pointsr/buildapc

Once I got my Acer Predator I have never looked back and it’s been wonderful. It’s also currently on sale!.... for $1.01 off.....

> So you say the gsync/freesync equiv are only $200 apart, but can't find any actual monitors at those prices? And you are calling the article shameless?

Give me a second: https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Computer-Monitors-349X7FJEW-Monitor/dp/B06Y4TQSK1/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501281139&sr=8-1&keywords=Philips+349X7FJEW

Same MVA panel, same ultrawide 100hz... Same price but we'll call that a measurement error.
But that's while we're keeping it in limits of ultrawides, once we move from those particular shackles we have a classic 144hz IPS example:
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-XF270HU-27-inch-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B0173PEX34/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1501281455&sr=1-1&keywords=Acer+XF270HU

$600 MSRP on Freesync vs $800 MSRP on G-Sync. Exactly $200, sales notwithstanding.

> What makes the MX34Q not a gaming monitor?

Lack of 1337 gam1ng aesthetic (see above for reference). I can game just fine on my cheap ass s22e390 and it even has pretty good response times for an IPS panel, it does not become gaming monitor from that however.

u/BlackDiablos · 8 pointsr/buildapcsales

Looks like Acer has been creeping up the price of these refurbished units. I'm pretty sure this exact model used to be $500 on the refurbished store and $400 for the older XB270HU.

This almost isn't worth it when you can get the monitor new for $765, but that's still a personal choice if that extra ~$165 is worth new.

u/Action3xpress · 7 pointsr/buildapc

Yea this model? https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20

Op you bought a 2080ti you might as well splurge on the monitor. Get two of these and call it a day, or go for one Dell Alienware 34in 1900r, 120hz IPS curved Gsync.

I have the Acer 1440p/144hz IPS Gsync and I agree with P1zza. It’s such a great monitor and often times Acer sells it for $499 out the door on their refurb site. Really great colors, angles are great, very little black light bleed on mine (right bottom very minimal), don’t have to calibrate it much out of the box, 165hz OC + gsync is really smooth. The Dell is nice if you are on a budget, pretty much the cheapest TN 144hz Gsync you can find when its on promo.

u/Shablo5 · 6 pointsr/nvidia

As far as I know, the 1070 cannot obtain 144FPS on ULTRA in most games (Although are you ONLY playing the latest games? No? Then it's half relevant). That said, Gsync has you the rest of the way.

Problem is, gsync is also a $150-$200 premium (at least in Canadian) to any monitor. They will tell you to buy monitors like this or this but it's hard to justify those 1440P monitors.

If you turn down your expectation to a 1080p gsync 144hz, then things become a bit more reasonable. But if you're an enthusiast, perhaps you really want to push the limit and try the 1440p 144hz g-sync bandwagon out.

u/Jakerbot · 6 pointsr/pcmasterrace

These Acer Predator XB271U monitors have ultra slim bezels and also come with a fast refresh rate of 144hz at 2560x1440.

Good luck with your build!

u/ZBastioN · 5 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Yes this is a beast of a PC, if you have the money you might as well go for a 4TB drive.

Go at least for a 1440p high refresh rate monitor with the 1080, everything less is a waste of a perfectly fine graphics card.

I recently recommended this monitor for the 1080 if you can afford it, it would be a great match.

u/Comassion · 5 pointsr/anime

It this guy, and it's really nice.

u/beef_swellington · 5 pointsr/buildapc

>But there's no point getting gsync anymore now that Nvidia supports freesync

that's not entirely accurate. The vast majority of freesync displays only sync in a relatively narrow band of refresh rates--some as narrow as 48hz-75hz. Gsync has no such limitation. Further, AMD is already moving on to a "freesync 2" standard that requires similar levels of certification to what NVIDIA requires for gsync, with commensurate costs.

edit:
here are some examples:
https://smile.amazon.com/27-inch-FreeSync-Response-DisplayPort-MG279Q/dp/B00ZOO348C
144hz ips freesync display, quite high end, but the freesync functionality only works at ranges of 35hz to 90hz. I would be a bit salty if I bought a monitor with frame synching technology that didn't actually work near the monitor's maximum refresh rate, personally.

Compare with a gsync competitor:
https://smile.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20
Gsync will work on that monitor from arbitrarily low values up to 165hz (you can overclock the monitor to 165hz--I know because I have one and do so).

u/Jc36 · 4 pointsr/IndianGaming

There is the new Acer Predator model, if it falls within your budget.

https://www.amazon.in/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560X1440-Monitor/dp/B0173PEX20

u/perfes · 4 pointsr/buildapcsales

Most of the monitors here are free sync and I would say have good implementations however I will include a Gsync category.

I would not recommend 4k for the 2080. It would be able to run games around 60 fps at 4k however refresh rate will make things more enjoyable. Also, 4k high refresh rate monitors are currently very expensive.

TL;DR of VA vs IPS

IPS has slightly better viewing angles than VA.

IPS has slightly better colors VA.

IPS has better response time than VA.

However, VA does not have defects like IPS glow and much better contrast, so much better blacks and such.

TL;DR of TN vs IPS

IPS has much better viewing angles than TN. TN will color shift if looked at straight on.

IPS has much better colors than TN.

TN has the best response rate.

TN is basically worse in every way than VA and IPS except for response time.

I haven't seen any expensive difference between freesync and non-freesync monitors.

You might be talking about G-Sync, those are the expensive ones.

Edit:
Sorry I thought you are talking about: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-27-inch-Widescreen/dp/B0173PEX20

The technology you have in what you bought is similar to the one in the one above, except there is no added cost, so you can't really say you paid for freesync, you paid for a high-end TN panel, freesync is just bonus.

I suspect you are a troll because if you know how to OC your video card and know Fallout 4 is limited to 30FPS by your monitor and not by something else, you do know how the monitor works. I apologise if you actually don't know how to troubleshoot this problem, you don't seem like you would have trouble doing it.

Use DDU(display driver uninstaller) to remove current drivers, reinstall latest version after. Connect monitor with display port cable in the package to you video card and set virtual super resolution to On in amd crimson. By this time Freesync option should be On in amd crimson. Now in amd crimson you have to go and limit fps to "desired refresh rate"-2, as most guides say, in order to make sure your monitor always stays in the freesync range. Also check that in windows dispay options at advanced to have your desired refresh rate selected. Search google for ufotest to be 100% sure at what refresh rate your monitor works to rule that out. Now download windmill test for freesync and make sure you see a difference with freesync on/off and vsync on/off. You have to see tearing and no tearing while cycling through them. If you still have it not working, I'd say you should return it or rma it because it's a faulty monitor.

u/CloudCityPDX · 3 pointsr/buildapc

This setup will do okay at 1440p/144hz, but unless you are really determined to go AMD I would recommend using a more powerful nvidia card.

I would start by calling my local costco and asking if any stores in my region have the Acer Predator xb271hu in stock. That monitor is currently on sale for $500 at costco because they are clearing out their inventory. If you can get that acer panel (its gsync) then use the money you saved to get a gtx1070 to go with it.

I currently have that acer predator monitor paired with a gtx 1070 and a 7700k. I get ~90-100 fps on BF1 64 player games with ultra settings, and ~140 fps on the mix of medium/high settings that I usually play with.

I would agree about Puget Systems, but I would swith to the Serenity line to get the same parts with Noctua cooling and precision-cut anti-noise foam..

I would then get three Acer 1440p 165 Hz Gsync monitors with IPS color technology and a Vive Pro.

AX1200i? That's an excellent PSU there!

>Processor - Ryzen threadripper will be overkill? Like 2950x?

Yes! Threadripper is not meant for gaming. It is for productivity. Ryzen 2700x will be more than enough for you. If you want, you can buy the overpriced 8700K.

>Monitor (4K required?) - I would prefer at least 2K or above with good color accuracy. Preferably IPS panels and good connectivity (DP 1.4, HDMI 2.0 - if possible)

4K gaming is pretty useless. Better get 1440p 144hz monitor.

Por que no los dos? That's what I found myself getting when asking myself the same question. If I did have to choose between the 2, I'd have a tough time deciding. The 1440p looks great for games, but the smoothness of higher than 60fps is also great.

u/smile_e_face · 3 pointsr/Monitors

Right, crash course time. I'm not really into the fighting game scene, barring watching a few EVO matches, but I'm going to go ahead and assume that they use TN panels, which prioritize high refresh rate and low input lag over picture quality. That one you linked most certainly does. If you've been using a TN monitor for a while, I'm not surprised that your friend's Predator got you thinking.

For picture quality, you have two options for panels: IPS and VA. Some people will tell you that IPS is the only way, but those people are wrong. IPS monitors clearly win the areas of color quality / vibrancy and viewing angles; TN panels have awful color shifting when viewed off-center, and VA panels, while better, aren't fantastic. On the other hand, all IPS panels bring with them the dreaded "IPS glow," a soft, pale light from the corners visible in dark content.

VA panels, on the other hand, stomp the competition when it comes to contrast - compare ~500:1 for TN, ~1000:1 for IPS, and ~3000:1 for VA - making them an excellent choice for movies. Think the difference between LCD and plasma televisions, which is actually not far off, technologically speaking. But, they're incredibly slow - there are only a handful of VA panels available with refresh rates over 60 Hz - and not really suitable for fast-paced genres like FPS.

Also, consider that both IPS and VA panels have inferior response times and input lag, compared to TN. Almost all gamer-oriented TN panels have ~1ms response times, while IPS aim for ~4ms and VA are lucky if they get ~8ms. What this means is that things might seem a little sluggish when you start out; I emphasize "might" because some people, like me, don't care about the difference, and others don't even notice it. Manufacturers attempt to fix this problem by building "overdrive" into their monitors, essentially pouring more juice into the pixels to force better response times. As you might imagine, though, this comes with its own problems, including higher input lag and "overshoot," faint trails and blurs behind fast-moving objects. This one I do care about, and it's one of those things that once you see it, you can't stop seeing it. IPS panels can suffer from this problem, but VA is where it gets really nasty.

So, in summary, you have three options:

  • TN panels, which offer blazing speed and near-CRT levels of input lag, but often have poor colors, contrast, and viewing angles. This is almost certainly what you have right now.
  • IPS panels, which offer rich colors and almost perfect viewing angles, but have only middling response times and suffer from glow. This is what your friend has.
  • VA panels, which offer fantastic contrast and middle-of-the-road colors and viewing angles, but have low refresh rates and often suffer from input lag and overshoot.

There are also other features that you might want to consider, but if you're not into PC gaming in a big way, they might be a waste. A few:

  • 1440p+ resolution. This one can be nice even if you don't game. Higher resolution makes for a clearer, crisper picture, but does significantly decrease performance in games and can flummux Windows' and Linux's UI scaling to this day. Still worth it, in my opinion. Do note that the best resolutions for each screen size are probably: 1080p for 24", 1440p for 27", 4K for anything bigger.
  • 21:9 aspect ratio ("ultra-widescreen"). I haven't used this one myself, but I hear it's pretty great, especially for games and movies. For applications, it might not perfectly replace two monitors, simply because you can't do things like full-screen a video on one monitor and work on another. It's up to you on that one.
  • 120+ Hz. Fast refresh rates allow for more fluid gameplay, provided your graphics card can hack it. That 780 is a bit long in the tooth for this, at least with recent titles. In addition, 120 Hz offers a neat bonus: it's a perfect multiple of both 24 Hz and 30 Hz, which means it will eliminate judder in nearly all media.
  • G-SYNC / FreeSync. Designed by NVIDIA and AMD, respectively, these technologies sync your display's refresh rate with your graphics card. What this means is that you can experience tear-free, buttery smooth gameplay without having to enable VSync and all the input lag nightmares that come with it. Note that, while FreeSync monitors are often competitively priced, G-SYNC adds a hefty tax, and you can't use one company's tech with the other company's graphics cards.

Well, that's just about all you really need to know about finding a new monitor. As for suggestions, I don't really keep up with all the latest models and whatnot, so I'll leave that to others. The Predator is an excellent monitor, though. If you liked your friend's so much, why not get one yourself? It's right in the middle of your budget at ~$750, and includes all of the neat features above, minus 21:9. For $50 more, the ASUS PG279Q offers a similar experience with maybe juuuust a bit better colors. Finally, Acer also offers the 34-inch, IPS, 21:9, curved XR341CK for ~$840, which is...just...wow...really quite a...reasonable price...hmmmm. There's also the G-SYNC-enabled X34, but that $400 premium is absurd.

Well, I know that was long, but I hope it helped. I just think it's always best to know what you're looking for, rather than just following some random recommendations. If you've got any questions, it's my long weekend, so ask away.

So, you're on AMD and switching to Nvidia, do you plan on going G-sync ?

If so, this is the cheapest 1440p 144hz (overclockable) monitor I found when looking around for buying mine last week, my criterias were, in order , 144hz,24"+,1440p

Since I couldnt afford the 27" 1440p, I felt like staying at 1080p wouldnt be that bad on a 24" and settled with the Acer predator 24 inch 1080p , 144Hz boostable to 180Hz, I got it wednesday...

Pros and cons so far:
pros.

  • Never experienced 144Hz before, and with G-sync, this thing is fantastic.

  • I dont know much about panels, but the colors seem pretty customizable and I dont see that much of a difference with my previous ips panel ( this one is TN ), i believe the first versions of this monitor had alot of backlight bleeding a couple of years ago, didn't notice anything major on mine.

  • It comes with a little hook on the back for your headset.

  • Built-in speakers if you're low on space (they are ordinary), you can customize up to 3 or 4 presets

  • 1ms

    Acer predator 24 inch 1080p , 144Hz

    Acer predator 24 inch 1440p

    Acer predator 27 inch 1440p

If you do not care about G-sync, that would have been my choice, it comes with adaptyve-sync technology (that's another name for amd's freesync, I think) :

Let me lay out the competition:
ViewSonic XG2703-GS (4ms)
ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q (4ms)
Acer Predator XB271HU bmiprz (4ms)

Here's the deal, I've never heard of an IPS panel with an advertised sub 4ms response time. I don't think they exist. If you can manage to dredge one up from the depths I can guarantee it's either manipulative marketing, or a professional grade monitor which costs far more than a grand.

From what I've heard response time itself is primarily marketing BS when provided without the input lag (which conveniently no monitor manufacturers seem to provide).

Without both input lag and response times you don't have the full set of information to determine the actual amount of time it takes to propagate an image to the screen after an action, so there's not much to be gained from comparing a few milliseconds.

Thats a $900 monitor which is almost x2 the price of his GPU. Using the same 'future proofing' argument hes better off getting a 1080 for that price

u/Cokadoge · 2 pointsr/PUBATTLEGROUNDS

If you have an OC'd i7 or R5/7 and you're fine at 1080p, a 240 Hz monitor might be good just "for gaming." Considering as of right now nobody can really achieve 160+ FPS in PUBG with any setup, it's not a good fit for it. I'd recommend a 1440p 144 Hz panel as many other people have said. Preferably with G-Sync because you have an Nvidia card. The ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR is pretty good. There's also an Acer Predator XB271HU which is pretty much the same specs.

u/got_mule · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Not sure what your budget for the monitor is, but you can't really go wrong with either of these:

I'm not sure about 4k but in terms of 1440p, 144Hz, IPS, and Gsync, there's the Acer XB271HU. If you live near a Costco or can drive to one that has one still in stock in the US, you could grab it for $500 now (MSRP is like $800). If you're lucky enough, you might be able to grab the display unit for much cheaper as someone got their display unit at the store for $250. If you're further interested in this monitor, just let me know and I don't mind assisting further.

I have the Acer Predator XB271HU (G-Sync, IPS, and up to 165Hz) right now and it's phenomenal. It's often considered one of the top dogs for 27" 1440p gaming monitors along with the PG279Q and AOC Agon AG271QG.

Also, start checking out /r/buildapcsales if you aren't. Recently, the XB271HU was on sale for $550 on Amazon if you have Amazon Prime.

Edit: Seems it's still on sale.

u/LimitedWard · 2 pointsr/gaming

The Samsung C27HG70 is the 27" version of the monitor Hoi_C recommended. As far as I know, the specs are otherwise identical: 144hz 1440p VA panel with excellent color accuracy and HDR (not strictly necessary for gaming, but still a nice touch). It's also within your budget, selling around $450 on Amazon. Note: this monitor comes with Freesync support (not G-Sync), so it pairs much better with a high-end AMD GPU than an NVIDIA. That said, if you don't care about variable refresh rate, it's still a great option regardless.

If you're tempted by ultrawide monitors, Massdrop has a really good one for $550 (a little over budget, but you basically can't get better specs than this without spending at LEAST $200 more). For a similar price, the Acer Predator XB271HU will offer similar specs to the Samsung monitor, but with G-Sync.

As for what I'm using, I have the ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q. Pretty much the top of the line for G-Sync at 1440p, but I can't recommend it to you because it's too over budget at $680.

TL;DR: the Samsung C27HG70, Massdrop Vast, and the Acer XB271HU are all excellent monitors, and you can't go wrong with any of them. Best all around value is the Samsung.

u/Fart__Hoofer · 2 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

u/FlamingLizardGaming · 2 pointsr/suggestapc

Sure, what games will you be playing? That will help me find one.

Knowing nothing about your gaming habits, this monitor
Is about the best you can buy. A really fast refresh rate (good for shooting games and competitive games like rainbow six siege, csgo, fortnite, pubg, overwatch, Fallout, pretty much any games) this monitor has a really high resolution compared to the standard 1080p monitor. It also has G-sync that makes games a lot smoother. (It only works with Nvidia gpus)

IF you want a cheaper monitor, then this 4K monitor is both bigger and has a much higher resolution (more detail) but a lower refresh rate, so the image won’t be as smooth and snappy (which isn’t important for games like WoW or Dota or more casual games like Strategy games or games like undertale/enter the gungeon)

You can always have one 4K or 1440p monitor and then a smaller or cheaper 1080p monitor next to it for YouTube videos or google while gaming.

(Lmao I should make an Amazon affiliate link and make some ca$h from this)

Would it make more sense to upgrade my 980 to a 1080 first before moving to a 144hz 1440p monitor? This is primarily with FPS/MoBA/RPG games in mind. The 980 crushes most games at 1080p on Ultra, but I'm not sure about 1440p. Anyone have some insight?

Thanks for your help, its very useful and informative. 1440p 144Hz is the only reason im upgrading tbh. But holy shit that 1080p 144hz monitor is so much cheaper.

Looks like im looking for a 27" 1440p/144Hz, freesync. Not sure about IPS/TN but IPS panels are around $700 CDN.

The two ive been looking at are:

I have another question, currently I'm running dual 24" (BENQ GL2460, BENQ RL2455) monitors. They both connect via DVI. If i still want to run dual monitors, say my new 27" and one of the two 24" I have. Will this affect the performance of my new 27" primary monitor 1440p/144hz which connects via DisplayPort?

Also i should say I'm a huge chickenshit when it comes to OC so my CPU is stock.

I wish I would have done that rather than getting 2 monitors.

I can't comment directly on this monitor, as it isn't one I got, but I wish I would have gotten this

1440p 144hz is a beast. Youll need a beast of a graphics card to run high settings with this monitor though.

u/VMJ-senpai · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Either dual 980 Tis for consistent 4K60fps, or you wait for a few months for Pascal and/or Polaris to come out. I think dual R9 Nanos would suffice as well. Going single-GPU is another choice but I'd doubt it'll give ya ultra performance at 60fps.

Also, if you're gaming, you wouldn't need an i7. You could save a bunch by going with a non-K i5-6600 and going with a cheaper H170 board instead of the Z170 board. I hear that OC'ing on a SkyLake CPU doesn't really bring about a significant increase in performance.

All in all, 4K with more than or consistent 60fps is definitely gonna pull up a hefty price tag.

Edit: fuck my eyes, I didn't read the title. If you want a monitor the Acer Predator is best I know at 2K

144hzmonitors.com has a pretty good buyer's guide. Since you're Nvidia, the Acer XB271HU is probably your best bet: 27", 1440p, IPS, 144-165Hz, ~$700. I believe Acer and ASUS have the only offerings with all these specs in IPS, but lots of people have had backlight bleed issues. The newest versions like the one I leaked supposedly have better quality control though and lots of people love them.

Dell and BenQ also have similar but in TN panels, and I'd probably recommend them if you don't want IPS or would rather spend less. I have a Dell S2716DG primarily for gaming and it's great. But if you can afford it, then IPS is definitely nicer.

u/CezarBR · 2 pointsr/buildmeapc

Damn, do I hate being in Canada when it comes to computer parts like this. I've been drooling over a monitor with these same specs for a few weeks but can't afford it. That same Acer Predator XB271HU that OP picked up for $611, I'd have to fork over $900 for. And it's not the exchange rate, either - $611 USD is about $770 CAD.

I have an use a Predator XB1.. IPS 1440p +144/165hz & Gsync.

Before that I've always been accustomed to TN 60hz or IPS 60hz. Off the bat I will say if you like content creation and consumption (watching beautiful movies and photographs etc) the IPS is the way to go.

Also, if you value how something looks much greater than its utility, then trading a 1ms response time to a 4ms response time is practically an easy trade for the great picture and color reproduction.

I always wondered how it was to be above 60hz.. When I actually began playing I was amazed at how noticed it actually was going from 60 to 165 (I OC'd mine). It was extremely evident in my gameplay experience. I'll use battlefield 4 to explain this. Whenever there's an explosion it's not much more fluid than being a completely blurry mess, when I'm running I have to advantage of being served the latest frames directly from the GPUs (I use 2 980s), when I'm sprinting to approach a target I can much more easily depict whether if in the distance it's a person or am object (because as you run you naturally see some things in the distance as tiny aberrations, which you must react and identify quickly otherwise you may be shot at first). It definitely improved my game play and my server rank statistics substantiated this claim as there was a significant improvement across the board.

1440p. I love it. It's nice for viewing things on the Web and being able to have my editing tools and thumbnails spread out nicely. Most importantly I have 2 980s so this would be the highest resolution I can play games at maximum graphical settings without AA. Another neat thing is that because it's 1440p it naturally removes the need for any MSAA, you can turn it up to 2x but I doubt you'll noticed anything, which is awesome. I have my 24" 1080p IPS monitor right next to it because I've always preferred 2 than 1 or 3.

Here's my use case: Spend hours in Photoshop/Lightroom, spend hours watching Netflix, spend hours playing games (bf4, mostly competitive or RPG /twitch games).

Why do I stress the hours portion? Well throughout all this I'm changing positions on my chair, with a TN panel that'd be pretty terrible because if you look at the display other than directly from the front you get distorted colors, while as with IPS you can view it from multiple angles (think of reclining your chair and watching a movie as an example).

Please bear in mind what power you have to drive the display you want. If you want 1440p of 4k do you have the card/s to play games at the settings you want? I'm an edge case, I wanted to be able to max out every piece of eye candy and keep my fps always higher than 120-150.

Here's an Amazon link to the actual display I have:

With this build you could make use of 1080p 144Hz, 1440p 60Hz and if you want to future-proof your monitor even 1440p at 144Hz. Here is a list of monitors that would fit:

u/wolf39us · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I have two completely different monitors because I like to do video production AND I'm a gamer.

  • Acer Predator 27" IPS Display
  • Dell U3415W

The color accuracy is really good on the gaming monitor, but the difference can be seen between the Dell and the Acer. That's not to say that you won't get amazing results on the Acer monitor!

The BIGGEST difference for my use case is the extra real estate of the ultrawide monitor when working with large videos. That being said it is NOT a gaming monitor and you will be stuck at 60hz (which is where the Predator comes in!)

If gaming and accuracy are both paramount, get two different monitors and have the best of both worlds.

As someone in the same boat I will pass on what I've learned in my search. How big of a screen do you want. (24,27,32) What resolution do you want it in. (1080,1440, 4k) What kind of panel. (TN,VA,IPS) most important question. How much do you want to spend? If your budget is 200$ bucks then you just find the best monitor at that price point. If you have a budget of 700 then you have a lot more options.

u/IsABot · 1 pointr/buildapc

Really depends on your budget. If you plan on doing professional photo editing or other color sensitive work, you pretty much need to go IPS. IPS is more expensive and even more expensive if it has to support HDR, high refresh, and greater than 1080p.

So what's your budget? Does something like this work for you? https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20/

(This was my new monitor for reference. Which I had to give up the higher refresh to get everything else I needed. For a professional usage with some gaming.)

u/RedZaturn · 1 pointr/FortniteCompetitive

Damn you got a kick ass monitor. I'm eyeing the acer predator IPS equivilant. I know IPS has a longer response time but that results in more ghosting, not higher input lag. According to blur busters the difference in input lag between the IPS and TN version is only a few MS, and that is worth it to me since IPS looks fucking amazing.

u/Savan47 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I haven't looked into it too much yet. Theres actually two same specs similar price points.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-27-inch-Widescreen/dp/B0173PEX20

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017EVR2VM/ref=psdc_1292115011_t1_B0173PEX20

I probably wouldnt notice the 3ms difference and would love it to be fast, no tearing, AND look amazing, y'know? lol

u/arcticfox23 · 1 pointr/buildapc

I forgot that it was an entire line, this is the one I was thinking of. Outside of my $600 range but if its worth it, then I can adjust my budget for it. I'd rather spend more for something that'll last.

I've never owned a nice monitor, only ones that come bundled with computers, and nothing recent either. Which means I've probably only used monitors without IPS and GSync, will I be that much lesser off without IPS or G-sync?

Also, thank you for your comment and suggestions. I'll poke around for 27" 1440p 60Hz IPS monitors with and without G-Sync to better understand what I'll be looking at in terms of price.

u/luxurychair · 1 pointr/pcgaming

not the person you replied to, but still.

There's a couple options but I have this one

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-27-inch-Widescreen/dp/B0173PEX20

u/productfred · 1 pointr/pcgaming

At that point, I wonder what the point of going G-Sync is. I have this (the IPS version, not the TN version): https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20

I have zero regrets buying it; I got it for $450 and it's phenomenal. But now that Freesync works with G-Sync, I don't see a reason to get a G-Sync monitor. They cost $100 more on average because of the additional hardware and licensing fees, whereas Freesync is part of the DisplayPort standard afaik.

u/Jiitzu · 1 pointr/buildapc

I meant this one, https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20

But is prolly to expensive, the dell should be fine tho

u/chelsfc2108 · 1 pointr/bapcsalescanada

How about a XB271HU brand new for $889 from Amazon? Price match it with MemoryExpress and they give you another 3% off

https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-Predator-NVIDIA-Widescreen-Display/dp/B0173PEX20

Paying $810 for a refurbished is insane. Most of the time these refurbished are just items returned because of excessive BLB and they just resell, because they are "fully functional".

EDIT: and with Amazon/ Memory Express you can play the panel lottery game a lot more comfortably. If you get a panel with dead pixels and horrible BLB from viewsonic webstore, good luck going through the hassle of returning. When you want to buy these kind of monitor, you know you are going to have to play the panel lottery game, and with refurbished you increase the chance of losing

u/MythicalPigeon · 1 pointr/Monitors

Not much G-Sync IPS 144hz fit that budget, unless for sale (usually they are around $700) I'll list some good ones:

AOC AG271QG

Viewsonic XG2703-GS

Acer XB271HU

Acer XB270HU

If you are fine with no G-Sync, then the Nixeus EDG27 fits your budget (Not fully released, will be some time very soon though. Some places are already shipping them out)

u/MeRollsta · 1 pointr/Monitors

Here you go:

TN 144 Hz Panels:

  • Acer XG270HU (sold for $300 on Black Friday)

  • BenQ XL2730Z

    IPS 144 Hz Panels:

  • Acer XB271HU It was just released, so only Amazon has stock popping up every now and then.

  • Acer XB270HU

  • Acer XF270HU

Note that the TN panels color production isn't as good as IPS Panels, but the ones which i mentioned are native 8-bit panels, so they're much better than your typical TN panel.

Btw, which graphic card do you use? If you're using AMD, you would want to go for a Freesync display. If you have Nvidia, then go for a G-Sync display.

u/blazbluecore · 1 pointr/buildapc

That's not even best in class. This one gets better reponse time and is an IPS

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0173PEX20/ref=psdc_1292115011_t2_B00MSOND8C

u/jvorn · 1 pointr/oculus

Since you seem knowlegeable what do you think about this Acer?

u/wjcc666 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

It matters on the monitor. Yours appears to be 144hz, but overclockable, so you can push it higher. They say 165hz on the sales page

u/aleramz · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

> PG278Q

It's a nice investment if you're into 1440p TN 144hz panels, but there are other options, Acer Predator XB271HU for slightly higher price, your get a IPS panel (trust me, the difference between a TN and IPS is insane, and input lag really doesn't matter between 1-8ms), this panel goes over 165 hz if you slightly overclock it (and Acer supports it), but standart 144hz is rule for that Acer Monitor, I'm planning to purchase this monitor in a few months, or heck even go nuts to buy the Predator X34 or this other XR341CK, the X34 is G-Sync and the other XR34 is FreeSync.

u/boogiePls · 1 pointr/nvidia

I got a G1 GTX 980 ti with an Acer XB271U and I love this combination. For single player games I usually just lock the game at 60 FPS using Ultra/High settings and use G SYNC, for multiplayer games I adjust my settings so I can be between 120-144 fps. I recommend 1440p IPS, definitely a noticeable difference compared to 1080p. Virtually no input lag either if you worry about that kind of stuff.

u/Hunari · 1 pointr/buildapc

Well if you had gsync you would turn it on in your NVIDIA control panel so you always are at 142-143 FPS on a 144hz monitor.

This will ensure you have gsync on all the time. It makes things silky smooth so you do not get any stuttering.

Here’s a few options for g-sync monitors -

https://www.amazon.com/PG279Q-2560x1440-G-SYNC-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B017EVR2VM

Or

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20

These monitors are $50 above your budget but has G-Sync and are IPS monitors so the color reproduction is a lot better than a TN.

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Gaming-S2716DGR-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B0149QBOF0

This would be another option 1440p 144hz G-sync. But it’s a TN so the color isn’t quite as good but saves a good bit of money.

u/rileyluck · 1 pointr/buildapc

http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00MSOND8C

Asus 1440p 27" at 144 hz - $698

All with G-sync, seems like the 27" Acer is the best bang for my buck?

u/Zoidsty · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I am currently between this one and this one.

Here in Germany I'd pay 800€ for the first one or 1300€ for the second one and I cannot decide!

But it will have G-Sync in either case, which is nice :D

u/Scathing_Unicorn · 1 pointr/buildapc

This Acer or this Asus. You could find the 4k version of the Asus if you want, although 1440p is still recommended.

u/aaronfranke · 1 pointr/techsupport

Every 1440p IPS display I know of has a VESA mount, what's your budget? I have a 27" Acer Predator that works great in my dual arm mount, but I had to buy a heavy duty dual monitor mount since the monitor weighs around 12+ lbs and was too much for a normal dual arm mount to hold up easily.

i have a gtx 1080 and got this monitor. I dont use freesync cause that only for amd cards but then again a 1080 destroys 1440p so even if you have gsync it wont make that much of a difference.

i guess its up to you if you want to pay the 100-200 bucks gysnc tax for minimal benefit. i think you should wait for vega before getting a gpu . if vega is close or out performs a 1080 then this monuitor is a steal.

also this monitor has a gsync version . look at the price difference. the same monitor but with gysnc cost 350 dollar more.

you can get some really sick monitors if you're willing to spend that much. I honestly dont know that much about monitors, but a ACER Predator XB271HU or a (Gigabyte) AORUS AD27Q seem like good starting points for watching reviews and comparisons with other monitors. Good luck!

Except it doesn't need to be an Acer. It just needs G-Sync

u/BadBoiBarry · 1 pointr/Monitors

Not sure if you have taken a look at this one yet, but I would recommend the Acer Predator XB271HU bmiprz. It's a little bit more expensive, but it is IPS, has low input lag, and gsync if you have an nvidia video card. I have the version before this and it it is oh so beautiful. You can also turn it into portrait mode, which is good for programming and has hdmi and displayport hookups. You can also sometimes find them on acer's recertified store for 500. I would also consider upgrading the monitor and/or getting a second one. Also, check what outputs the video card has. The monitor you have selected doesn't have a DisplayPort in which is what most of the video cards use these days

I can tell the difference with G-sync on versus no g-sync and there is input lag.
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzHxhjcE0eQ

Now having said that I do admit it is not a lot of input lag but it is there. The trick is making sure to limit your FPS below monitor refresh rate. Some games do not support this but there are a some aftermarket frame limiting programs. https://www.reddit.com/r/cemu/comments/63783c/best_fps_limiter/

Having said all that though I will say that the best monitor 144hz 1440p monitor costs $700 and may be out of your price range. Then you can decide if you like G-sync because its a bonus. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

I also have a 1440p dell monitor that cost $500 and the Acer absolutely blows it out of the water in terms of color and contrast. A complete waste of money.

If your budget is not that high than i recommend just getting a basic TN 144hz 24 inch panel. There's a lot on the market.

Other thing to consider is that 1440p 144z monitors are 27 inches and I love and hate the size of the monitor.

u/rolfraikou · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

ACER I believe sells a couple of G-sync and Freesync versions of their 144hz AHVA monitors, however none I've seen have come close to being as cheap (I exclude refurbished in that figure, perhaps those have gotten closer)

You're looking at almost double the price for a modern G-sync variant.

The older model is often the same price, more expensive, or maybe $30 less. Can't really suggest that one then. Maybe a deal will pop up on that, but it would need to be a huge discount for me to personally do it.

Acer's g-sync option is also hovering around $750.

If you did one, I'd suggest the Asus one, as it's 165hz. If you're gunna spend all that money, might as well.

u/John_Wasan · 1 pointr/buildapc

i went with a gigabyte 1080ti auros gaming 11g extreme and the This monitor https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20

Edit: 1). ASUS also offers a very similar monitor, the ROG SWIFT. Basically the discrepancies come down to backlight bleed and dead pixels.
2). I didn't wait for Vega because I was ready to buy my PC too early.

u/MajorasHEVsuit · 1 pointr/Battlegrounds

Lol no problem we've all been there, you don't have to worry about fps with the pc that you're getting.

I did some research, 1440p + 144Hz monitors are still very expensive, unless you're rich I don't think this is a good buy: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497628683&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=predator+asus+1440p+144hz

So now the question becomes, do you want 1080p+144Hz or 1440p+60Hz. Honestly, I think you should go for a 1080p+144Hz monitor. You indicated that you want to play shooters like Battlefield for example, those games benefit greatly from as much fps as possible.

Having a 60Hz monitor means that it can only display 60 frames per second, in other words, playing at 140 fps is useless on a 60Hz monitor. Pretty simple right? So a 144Hz monitor will be more than twice as smooth as a 60Hz monitor IF you can hit 140fps, which you absolutely can with a gtx1070. This model is great bang for your buck: https://www.amazon.com/VG248QE-1920x1080-144Hz-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B00B2HH7G0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497628158&sr=8-1&keywords=ASUS+VG248QE+Black+24%22+144Hz+1ms
There are more good ones out there, maybe you want to pay even less or more so you can do your own research if you want.

One more thing, I see you're getting a 480GB SSD but no HDD at all. Do you see yourself getting lots of games over time? 480GB of total storage is not a lot. For the same or even lower price you can get a 250Gb SSD to install Windows and your favourite games on AND a 2TB(2000GB) HDD for mass storage of all your other games and stuff. This is my setup and I highly recommend it. If you're not sure, don't worry about it, you can always buy a big HDD at a later date.

u/YamiKishi · 1 pointr/IndianGaming

Has anyone here tried buying anything over 50k with their SBI card?

I tried checking out with this: https://www.amazon.in/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560X1440-Monitor/dp/B0173PEX20/ and I'm only seeing a discount of 1301 being applied.

$800 for the 1440p 27" here in Canada with 144hz overclockable to 165hz.

u/eliphaz · 1 pointr/buildapc

Not a monitor but if you haven't built yet you could save some coin by getting two 2x8 ram sets. They're around $110 each so you'd be looking at $220 for 32gb instead of $290.

Also: TITAN X? Jesus. I'd go 1080 and save your money if you're only doing 1440p at 144hz that'd still be more than enough horsepower and the cost difference alone would save the money so you wouldn't have to chip in for the monitor. But, you do you.

As for a monitor: best option in my opinion.

You get 1440p, a hella high refresh rate, gsync, a good screen size, IPS with great colors and picture, and its reputable with a good warranty.

Dual Monitor Help

I just bought the Acer Predator 144hz and I am running dual monitors along with a ASUS PB278Q 60hz.

My problem is I can't seem to find out how to make my Predator go to 144hz. I right clicked on the desktop to go to display settings but it is only giving me the options of 59 & 60. I also made sure I was selecting the Predator.

The Predator is hooked up with HDMI and the ASUS is through display port. I have a GIGABYTE 980ti with only 1 HDMI.

Also any other newcomer tips for setting up dual monitors? Thank you!

u/proxydouble · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Coming from someone who bought an X34 and returned it because I received a bad panel, I wish I would have exchanged it (instead of refunding it).
Instead, I purchased the Acer Predator XB271HU (27", 1440p, 144hz, G-Sync, IPS).

While I love this monitor, not every game I play can take advantage of the 144hz. I usually hover around 100FPS (depending on the game). With that said, if you can afford the X34. Get it. It's definitely worth it.

u/Celticz · 1 pointr/buildapc

If you're going SLI config then I would either go with a 4k monitor or a 1440p 144Hz. My recommendations for monitors are such:

Predator X34

Asus ROG PG348Q

Acer XB271HU

Asus ROG SWIFT PG279Q

Dell S2716DG

I recommended these monitors because you said budget is irrelevant so I figured I would show you the higher end. I have the XB271HU and I recommend it very much it's great.

u/LiquidAurum · 1 pointr/buildapc

something like this

u/Vervy · 1 pointr/buildapc

Are you used to IPS or TN? Do you need the absolute 1ms response? If you're already willing to shell out 500 pounds/640 USD for a monitor, you might consider going all the way with the Acer XB271HU for 110 USD more. IPS, 144hz, 27", GSync, 1440p.

Sticking to recommending within the price range that you actually asked for, my pick would be Acer XB241YU. 27", 1440p, 144hz, TN, GSync.

I don't know of m/any 24" monitors with 1440p, seems a bit overkill at that size anyway.

u/methAndgatorade · 1 pointr/buildapc

Yeah, VR does require a lot of extra stuff in its current state. And a lot of USB ports...haha

If you haven't overclocked your CPU yet and still want to, you could spring for a water cooling setup. You could definitely still OC with your Evo but you can go pretty extreme and your temps will stay nice and frosty with some of the water coolers out there.

You'd still have a lot of $ left over too

edit: fuck that, get this yeeee

u/jobhand · 1 pointr/Monitors

Personally I can't recommend that specific monitor in its current state for really anything. I went through 3 of them with different issues, returned all of them. Stuck pixels, poor white uniformity and bad light bleed were the issues I returned for.

But to answer your question it depends on what you mean by photoshop work.

Photo editing, color correcting etc. Based on your budget I'd definitely go with a 4k monitor with 10bit color and a 10 series Nvidia card, because they support 10bit color. Also as others have stated check Adobe RGB and sRGB color coverage of the display.

If on the other hand you're doing graphic design work and illustration that doesn't make extremely heavy use of gradients and complex color palettes. You don't necessarily need 10 bit color or as much coverage of the Adobe RGB or sRGB color spaces since most of your work I assume will be printed with mostly 4 color process or on rare occasions 6 color. So I'd say you're free to look into some high refresh IPS monitors, but bewary that many of them are experiencing many of the same problems as the PG279Q. The one that seems to receive more praise than the others is the Acer XB271HU.

I do the latter of the two, graphic design and illustration. But I also game quite a bit, 20-30 hours a week and like to play Triple A games at 60fps or above. So I had to do a bit of research and mold the two into one since I didn't want to buy separate stations for the both of them.

Acer XB271HU is the same one as the post right? Was looking on Amazon since I got a $50 giftcard for it and saw they got two of these for sale. One is for $611 and the other one is $703.

u/PharmFresh · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

Then you want the XB271HU.

Edit: This isn't 10-bit, I think it's some special 8-bit panel but I don't remember.

u/HomieMcBro · 1 pointr/buildapc

This one is one of the best monitors you can get in my opinion. 1440p 144hz G-Sync IPS

u/Neverlife · 1 pointr/monitor

I personally like the Acer XB271HU. I believe it hits all of your checkboxes (27", 1440p, IPS, 144Hz), but i'm not sure what the price comes to after conversion.

u/Kronos_Selai · 1 pointr/buildapc

You have the wrong monitor mate. If you are wanting 144hz gaming, consider this instead.

Edit-For that money, get the 512 gb 950 pro m.2. Lot more games on there, blazing fast.

Edit 2-Forgot, you need a Gsync monitor. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-27-inch-Widescreen/dp/B0173PEX20/ref=zg_bsnr_1292115011_19?tag=amazon0606-20

IPS does not smear the image.

I play almost exclusively FPS and I have no problems at all with "smearing."

Having I high refresh rate along with a low response time virtually removes any display lag.

I have an AN-IPS display, I have a refresh rate up to 75hz, and I have a response time of 4. No issues at all. It is night and day from my old TN panel, and I could never go back.\

Oh here is a 144hz IPS

and here is another

Oooo! Look what I found!

u/SinisterHumanoid · 1 pointr/buildapc

Why's the cost of your monitor $400...?

The cheapest I find is actually $850 and it's on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-XB270HU-bprz-27-inch-Widescreen/dp/B00UPVXDA8

A better, newer, nicer looking(in my opinion) monitor also by acer, is only $800. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0173PEX20/?tag=pcpapi-20

u/OptimistEmo · 1 pointr/buildapc

Build looks very strong. The case is 9.21" wide and the cooler is 6.42" tall, it may be a bit cosy but the cooler will fit without a problem.

The only thing I can somewhat recommend is that for $100 more you can get the Acer Predator XB271HU (27", 144hz, 1440p, IPS). If you are fine with a TN panel then stick with what you've selected but when buying a high end monitor like this I feel that you might as well get the best you can. Other than that you are good to go. Gl building

u/Symplicified · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Well, not including the monitor, which if you have a better suggestion I'm all ears, is about $2000, maybe. I don't really have a budget quite yet since I don't have the money, but I don't want to bottleneck the PC in any way. I already have a case picked out (Phantek Ethoo Evolve ATX, I just need the inner components. Probably Black/Red or Black/Blue..if that matters.

u/TWPmercury · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Well, one is $800 and the other is ~$1500.

Although the XB271HU generally has better quality control than the Asus, and is a bit cheaper.

u/HollowSaint · 1 pointr/buildapc

Can anyone vouch for/offer and alternative to the Acer Predator in terms of 1440p G Sync monitors? I was thinking around $700 as my budget.

u/SickleWings · 1 pointr/Monitors

I was about to submit a post (and still may) asking for almost the exact same thing, and for people's opinion on the Acer Predator XB271HU because it has:

  • 144Hz (OC to 165Hz I believe)

  • 27" (though they have a 24" version)

  • WQHD

  • IPS

  • G-Sync

Seemed like it was the only monitor with everything I wanted in one, and despite having a steep pricetag ($700+) it seemed to be perfect.

After reading reviews and doing research I saw a ton of stuff about "poor quality control" where everyone was complaining about terrible orange-ish backlight bleed. The pictures looked just as bad as they described and it really kinda scared me away from them.

After waiting 6 months and seeing no newer/better monitors show up on the market fullfilling the specs I wanted I'm now taking another look into them.

Anybody on here own an Acer Predator XB271HU? I'd love to get some more opinions and alternatives, and I think it's along the lines of what OP wants too.

It's the Acer Predator XB271HU, 27 inch 1440P/144 Hz with G-sync, I got it here.

I plan on using this thing for the next 6+ years and so far I’m very happy. It’s not cheap but compared with $3-500 GPUs that might take some people for 2-3 years this should last 2x that. When I last upgraded from my GTX 770 to 970 it was a good upgrade and I could generally max games out but the difference in image quality in that upgrade doesn’t compare with the clarity and smoothness that this monitor provides. I’ve never experienced free-sync so I can’t comment but it seems tying your monitor’s refresh rate to your GPU output (to the max of the monitor) really makes a big difference. My old monitor had so much tearing on games like Battlefield 4 (even strategy games like Rome II Total War) but with my new monitor there has been none.

u/datbird · 1 pointr/nvidia

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-27-inch-Widescreen/dp/B0173PEX20 - I just bought one of these a month ago along with a 1080. As someone who's been gaming since the mid-80's and has seen the rise of 3D gaming, it was my first g-sync enabled monitor. I have to say I would give away my new shiny GTX 1080 and use my old 770 for the time being if it meant I could keep this monitor. I strongly encourage you to get your self the g-sync with high refresh rate, and do what you gotta do on the graphics card front.

u/Arudinne · 1 pointr/Monitors

Right now Amazon now has it for the same price, but out of stock (you can order and they'll ship it when they have it).

u/ankor77 · 1 pointr/buildapc

You are incorrect. Unless you are talking about the ultra wide curved screen which is 60hz overclockable to 100hz.

The Acer Predator XB271HU is 1440p, IPS, 144HZ and actually overclockable to 165hz. I own it, trust me. See the amazon link as it clearly shows this:

There's two versions.

TN
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-Abmiprz-2560x1440/dp/B01N11QIYW

IPS
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20

I'd look at GTG Response times to determine if it's TN or IPS. TN is usually 1ms while IPS usually is 4ms or more..

u/YouAreWrongBot · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Yes absolutely. Buying those two together is ideal. But there is always your friends budget and needs.

When I upgraded my current rig (1080ti | i7 7700k) in June, I went all out and paid ~$700 for an IPS 1440p 165hz 27" GSync monitor (Acer Predator XB271HU if you're curious)

Your choices (that imo make most sense) are:

  • Buy the 1070 & the 1440p monitor without cutting back on other parts of the build

  • Splurge, buying the 1080ti, a 1440p monitor, and no cutting back (MOST EXPENSIVE OPTION)

  • Buy both the 1080ti and the 1440p monitor, but cut back on other options.

The 1070 can do a lot at 1440p. Not everything, but a hell of a lot. If your friend is upgrading to anything 1070 or higher, I wouldn't skimp on a monitor.

my brother runs in to 2k, ultra with a 1080.

every game he gets above at least 144fps. so the benchmarks of the 1080 are pretty accurate, i can vouch for that.

--

Are you for sure want 4k over 144hz? their maybe a 4k 144hz but thats probably over a grand without a doubt.

My brother has the Acer Predator

I've used it quite a bit... I'd say real fast moving games (CSGO) actually had some tearing in it, but it's an IPS panel at 144hz in 2k rez, it looks beautiful!

You don't even end up using the Gysnc though given I believe you need to enable vertical sync and that causes input delay, or puts that was the whole point of Gysnc, not needed to enable vsync.. I can't recall but last time i remember both of us had issues with it =\

$600-$800 = 1440p 144Hz / If you have the money go for this https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-27-inch-Widescreen/dp/B0173PEX20

$800+ If you're feeling really gangster get this https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-Z35-35-inch-speakers/dp/B01A0FEBXQ

Personally after switching to 144Hz I would never consider getting a 60Hz monitor ever again. It's just so much better.

u/Vsuede · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

In my humble opinion the current "meta" for monitors are the 2k 144hz IPS panels. Running 980ti SLI you should have no problem reaching those god tier framerates on such a panel.

I don't think they have quite hit that point on Ultra-wide yet but this is pretty fucking dope if you want to drop serious cash on a monitor. 100hz OC is nice, but I don't have much experience with monitor OC so for me this is probably king at the moment.

It is personal preference though, some people prefer 4k to higher framerates. Personally I do a lot of competitive online gaming so I like trading a bit of resolution for better refresh rates.

I really do like the Acer Predator XB1 on paper. I don't like the "gamery" look in the design, but the specs are pretty much perfect. Is the QC really that bad? Bad enough to just buy a 'lesser' monitor?

u/Wauughlord · 1 pointr/pcgaming

Would be easier if you gave the actual model numbers of the products you were looking at or the specific price range you were looking for. For example, the only LG 34" ultrawide IPS 2560x1080 monitor I can find is the 34UM65-P which is discontinued -- so I can't find a general price as to what you're getting.

Speaking from personal experience I can say a few things though.

  1. Owning a 1080p144 TN monitor I can honestly say that I won't buy a TN panel to upgrade, I only really got this because when I did 144Hz IPS panels with low input lag didn't exist without an huge price tag. I think that the increase in colour accuracy and contrast ratio to be well worth it for everything; general use, gaming and video playback.

  2. Ultrawide 1080p (2560x1080) at 34" is about the same pixel density of 1080p at 27" (~6600PPI). I personally think this is too low in terms of PPI and provides a pretty rough image; the bare minimum in my mind is about 8400PPI (or a 24" 1080p monitor). This may be fine for you but I'd definitely recommend seeing the monitor in action before you buy it if you haven't already.

  3. The GTX1080 is a beast of a card, but 4k is also a beastly resolution to pump out. If I recall correctly the benchmarks I saw showed the GTX1080 just missing 60fps at 4k for the majority of "new AAA" games they benched; things like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Hitman and Shadows of Mordor. I wouldn't recommend anything more than 1440p if you like high framerates; unless you really want/need the extra screen real-estate 4k provides, which definitely is tempting but not from a gaming standpoint.

  4. A lot of games hate non-16:9 aspect ratios, you can find threads filled with frustration from widescreen gamers since they're frequently overlooked. Case in point, recent Overwatch problems where the devs felt that "seeing more" on the sides equated to an unfair advantage and screwed with the display profiles for widescreen users. It's something to keep in mind.

Finally, if you're definitely looking at upgrading to a GTX1080 soon, it's probably not in your best interest to get a 1080p monitor. The GTX1080 is generally considered to be complete overkill for this resolution and if you're going to invest in a high-end, money-heavy card you may as well wait, save more money, and invest in a higher resolution monitor as well.

    ---

SIDENOTE: If money isn't too much of an issue or you're up for waiting until you get enough for a new monitor, I'd recommend the Acer Predator XB271HU or the ASUS PG279Q in order to fully take advantage of the GTX1080 you're planning on buying. Both are 1440p IPS monitors with low response times (not TN level but from what I've seen, easily good enough) and 144Hz+ with G-Sync (and the PPI at 27" makes me drool -- ~12,000PPI).

    ---

Advice for the moment though? Specifically think about exactly what you want to use the monitor for, do you need a large one? Do you want a high pixel density? Do you do work with multiple windows open when you're not gaming? Is ultrawide something you absolutely need?

Finally, check out this guide, they have an excellent break down of what's "best" at the moment for a variety of categories and is a great starting point.

Unfortunately the guide I was going to link is a part of the /r/pcgaming banned domains list for referral spam and my first comment was auto-moderator deleted. My bad, I had no clue. If you'd like to know what it was just PM me and I'll send it to you. To be clear, I'm not affiliated with them, I just think it's a good resource to compare recent monitors.

Last week I upgraded my 660 to a 1070; I had been using an old HP monitor from 2007 (specifically this one) for years and now is the time to get a real monitor. I want a 27" monitor with the right specs to take advantage of my 1070.

I feel 4k might be overkill and think 1440p would be satisfactory. If I went the 1440p route, should I aim to get a gysnc monitor, 144hz, or any other refresh rate? I'm in Canada so I feel like a gsync monitor (like this $1000~ one) may be breaking the bank a little too much. I'd love to be around $500~ but I'm willing to spend more if it's the right move. When I said price difference I meant for the 144hz vs 60hz. For a monitor to be Free Sync compatible it has to be 144hz (or so I was told I can't remember where I heard it from though)

This one is the 144hz monitor it's $426

I know there are other perks to the more expensive unit but I personally didn't see them like TN vs IPS, white balances, and 6ms vs 2ms on this monitor I mean they are there but very minute in my personal experience and opinion. The main perk I have with this new monitor over my older one is 1440p vs 1080p
