They work amazing! Just plug in and it does the rest, so easy. It automatically detects Wi-Fi from your router, and then it brings the internet through the coax wires to that room you put it in. Now you have a Wi-Fi signal and some ethernet ports in each room.

I put one in the bedroom for the Roku Ultra (direct connect with everything, it fly's!) And I put one of my basement for gaming. I hook my Xbox directly up to it with an ethernet cable.

so, easiest question first, where do the ethernet cables for the 2nd and 1st floor terminate? Is it back at the ONT like the 3rd floor one? if it is, then you could move the router next to the ont and then plug in ethernet runs for all 3 floors into the gateway, then you can just get wifi APs for each floor.

if you can't figure that out, the cheapest and IMO reliable option is to do MOCA over COAX. the gateway router already has MOCA active, so you would need moca adapters for the other floors (you can also use actiontec routers as cheap MOCA adapters) which would give you ethernet ports in those rooms.

powerline adapters are super hit and miss. i tried that with in our apt, it was only 10 feet away, and it worked most of the time, but at certain times of the day the latency would go way up and make it unuseable. in the end i got a new WIFI router (AC1900 one), which let me do all wireless, but it sounds like you have a bigger house to deal with.

Powerline adapters as someone else said can work great. Depending on who you use for your internet you can buy a mocha Extender and hook it up to a cable wire for the internet same way you do the router. I have fios and used this.

need to find what works for your isp . You didn't give alot of detail about how far pc is from the router or what the exact problem is.

I purchased a MOCA Extender and it seems to work pretty well. It has ethernet ports as well. If you have the 100/100 plan it should be fine.

If I wire with ethernet from Ont, can the actiontec extender WCB3000N convert ethernet to coax so fios tv works properly? Will this ethernet going to the tv need to come from router or from Ont?

I ended up getting the one in my post in addition to this one just to be on the safe side. I works pretty well at the full 100mbps speed (when wired), but every once in a while it drops down to 1mbps for long periods. I have no idea if one of the adapters is the culprit, of if it's my wiring.

I've been using them for years. I have had MoCA adapters get "flakey"(I guess) and start dropping signal and eventually even affecting the signal to my cable router. I could figure out which one by rebooting them individually until it worked and then I just replaced the bad adapter. I do not use the Cable Modem for mine; I have used different versions of MoCA adapters including the one made by Tivo. I use these exclusively now -

I have 4 of them and they work well. If you don't want the WiFi aspect it can be turned off with a little effort. I had one of these flake on me about 2 months ago but the rest have been stable. And, at this price, swapping them out is not that bad.

If you're on a budget, these work really well for MoCA. They're a bit older and slower, but at $10, it's hard to beat price wise. They max out around 175 Mbps, but it's enough for 50/10. I have four in my house and they work wonderfully.

Or, if you have a cable internet with MoCa (think Xfinity or Xstream), this $9 repeater will be a serious God send to your Wi-Fi.

I'm in a similar situation but a little further down the road than yourself. We recently got rid of Directv and switched to Playstation Vue. Purchased a bunch of Rokus to put on the lesser used TVs, and have an Nvidia Shield/PS4 on our main TV. I had purchased a 2 unit Orbi system that I absolutely love, and it gets pretty darn good down speeds. Router, main Orbi, server, and gaming PC are located in the basement. Secondary Orbi, Smartthings hub, and Lutron hub are located on 2nd level.

However - There is still some issue with Vue loading times (nothing major), but more recently my wife and I have been playing some games on Nvidia Gamestream and wireless is just not good for that application due to latency problems on wifi. I used a Powerline adapter, but due to the fact that they are dependent on what is/isn't being used in your house for power draw, they can be spotty.

You mention that you have coax in every room, and I'm about to go down the route of MOCA adapters. Bonded 2.0 adapters are not cheap, but they can give you 1gbps speed. There are cheap 1.1 adapters, and I think I'm going to give that a shot first. They can achieve 175 down, which should be more than plenty for streaming, Plex, and games to my main entertainment center. The rest is fine on wifi.

The DPC3941T should support MoCA (verify you can access it in the settings menu). In this case, I'd strongly recommend using a MoCA bridge with a second WiFi access point over an extender. If you have 8 or less cable outlets, you shouldn't have any problem with MoCA, and it will deliver a stable 100 Mbit/s to the extender via the coax in your house. What you'd do is place the extender by an existing cable outlet and it'd transmit data over the cable outlet to your modem. That way there's no interference to worry about on the wireless signal side (the WiFi only extender has to both receive from the DPC3941T over WiFi and then re-transmit, so it's a slower process since it can't TX and RX simultaneously). If you're able to set it up (have the technical aptitude), get a router with good range from here (location F is far away) and a MoCA bridge like this. You'd set the new router up in bridge mode, give it a new IP, set the MoCA bridge up, connect the MoCA bridge and new router in the new location. The simpler alternative is a combo device here that does MoCA + wifi in a single box, or a straight up wifi extender here.


IME you'll be much happier with the MoCA bridges. I consistently get 100 Mbps when using those. The powerline adapters are poor (20 Mbps typical w/ 5+ ms latencies on occasion) and the WiFi extenders (in relay mode) are also poor performers (see that SNB chart) because of the TX/RX collision.

I assumed this was the same tech as MoCA and Fios gateways get squirrely with more than one MoCA device from what I've read on this sub. If you have the most modern router from Fios, all you need is a single MoCA box in the basement on the same coax signal from Verizon. The coax is not in use, it was just left over from old service.

I think all I needed was a splitter, but still not getting anything on the second router, which I just learned is because it's incompatible with Frontier (it's a Netgear C3700-100NAS).

You can get a coax to Ethernet device for dirt cheap. Coax can support up to and over 100 mbs. The device will give you Ethernet wired, not wireless, in every room with a coax connection. the one "hardware" exception is you should make sure you have a MoCA filter at the edge of your house where your coax is... The MoCa configuration is by default set up without any encryption, you need a physical filter in line with your coax cable to "stop" it from going out beyond your own house back over where your cable comes in to your house. Otherwise your neighbors within 300' of that wire (or so) can buy a $12 device on Amazon to connect right to your network.

Note that the MI424-WR, at best, is MoCA 1.1, so the bonded MoCA 2.0 MM1000 is overkill. (More: Any two MoCA nodes will attempt to communicate with each other only at the highest MoCA spec supported by both nodes, so the bonded adapter will be operating only at MoCA 1.1.)

You’ll save some money and give yourself a personal wireless access point by grabbing a pre-owned MoCA 1.1 WCB3000N off Amazon for ~$17. (here) The WCB3000N should offer up to 150 Mbps throughput over the MoCA link.

If the landlords upgrade from the MI424-WR, then you can look at a faster MoCA adapter for your room. Otherwise, if you needed more speed now, you’d need to replace or supplement the MI424-WR MoCA bridge with a standalone adapter matching the spec of the MoCA adapter in your room.

Does your house have coaxial cables("cable") wired throughout the house? You can get grey market moca adapters for ~$15 each on amazon that use your cable wiring as if it were one long ethernet cable with max throughput around 800 mpbs with <10 ms in additional latency (newer version is ~2.5 gbps). These particular one's have two gigabit ethernet ports and broadcast their own wifi signal.

I have 3 moca adapters one by my ont plugged into my router via ethernet and one cable, one by my synology in my bedroom to give it a wired connection, and one for my xbox in the living room. I didn't have to lay any wire or anything just used the pre-existing cable wires in my apartment. You don't have to configure the moca networking at all except for the wifi. I don't use the wifi currently to be honest (lost the passwords on 2 and the 3rd I never touched any of the settings), but I am doing research right now to figure out what I want to do to upgrade my network.

Wifi mesh networks are garbage imo (latency and throughput suffer horribly), especially if you have fiber internet and unused cable in a few rooms. moca is what verizon fios and others use for their set top boxes
