As you have a taste for the classics, here are four fragrances that you'll at least find interesting, even if they don't necessarily appeal to you personally.

  1. Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel is a rather unusual, HUGELY influential fougère released in 1975. Its top notes are chiefly comprised of violet, petitgrain, and iris, which give it an odd, slightly bitter floral top that at times may seem almost eerie. I once heard it referred to as "the Dark Heart of the Wood in a bottle," which is about the most accurate characterization I can think of. It's rich, mossy, and VERY smooth, but definitely not for everyone. It's also incredibly cheap these days and I picked up my first bottle at a local CVS, so it might be worth the $16 blind buy for an ounce. It has incredible longevity and is intensely powerful, so I wouldn't use more than one or two sprays at most.

  2. Halston Z-14 is a soapy, strikingly green leather chypre dating from 1974. Largely forgotten, it was also enormously influential, and you can find it in little hole-in-the-wall fragrance shops at highway factory outlet malls. It runs about $18 per bottle and is characterized by its skillfully blended, scintillating lemon top notes layered over a soapy green chypre base interspersed with the leatheriness of isobutyl quinoline. It's another tremendous powerhouse and I can get about 8 hours of wear from two sprays. It was released in conjunction with Halston 1-12 and legend has it that Roy Halston Frowick (aka "Halston") couldn't decide between the two perfumes, so he decided to simply release both instead. The names are rumored to come from the perfumers' designations when working on the scents.

  3. Antonio Puig Agua Lavanda (sometimes just called "Agua Lavanda Puig") is a remarkable lavender fragrance from Spain. Though officially characterized as an aromatic fougère, it's really more of a lavender soliflore and is one of the cleanest, most skillfully blended fragrances I have ever encountered. Importing the beautiful green glass bottles from Spain costs a fortune (and Puig sadly does not export them to the States anymore), but you can buy a huge bottle of body splash from Amazon.com. Don't be fooled by the name, the price, or the fact that it says "for women;" it's the same stuff and gloriously beautiful. Unfortunately, as an Eau de Cologne (no matter what bottle it comes in), it doesn't have tremendous longevity, but it serves as a wonderful layering base for my next recommendation, and I often wear them together.

  4. Still one of the greatest lavender perfumes on Earth, Pour un Homme de Caron was created by Ernest Daltroff and released by the House of Caron in 1934. It's a very simple combination of lavender, cedar, vanilla, and musk (the cedar is there to bring out the woody facets of the lavender) and used to contain a perfume base made by the House of DeLaire called "Mousse de Saxe." Sadly, the formula for MdS is long gone, as is everyone who ever knew it, so PuHdC has seen a couple reformulations, but it's still spectacularly good. You can find it on Amazon for ~$30 a bottle. There's a certain trick to wearing it, though: a single spray or two will develop a "doughy" quality due to the vanillin content, so the best way to wear the stuff is to layer it on top of itself: spray it five or six times in the same place on your wrist, then five or six times in the same place on your throat. The layering will bring out the lavender and musk more and keep it from smelling too sweet. It will also increase the longevity, which goes up to around six hours or so.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Here you go, on Amazon for $13. (Ignore the "for women," it's the same stuff, just a quirk of the Amazon listing.)

I've seen this as cheap as $6 on Amazon:

The packaging is cheap as hell, and it doesn't last super long, but it's a nice fresh clean lavender scent. Rumored to be the go-to aftershave of Frank Sinatra. It has a shower gel flanker that's also nice.
