There's a Secret Wars mini called Renew Your Vows (here's an Amazon link). This follows on from that. Beyond that, know who Spider-Man and MJ are and that Eddie Brock/Venom is a thing.

There's not exactly a huge history to this one.

okay so my favorite ones for just starting out are:
3. Spiderman Blue. If you already know Spiderman, you will need no context going into this. The characters aren't too obscure and it's all pretty basic stuff. And the other Marvel Color books are awesome as well.
2. Spider Island. This one you may need a bit more context for, but you will figure it out more or less by the time you're even a quarter of the way through the book. Biggest thing to know is that Spidey had to get rid of his spider sense to fight someone and now he has to learn from Iron Fist how to fight without it. Also I believe in this one, it's after the events of Civil War, and Dr Strange has used magic to make everyone forget Parker is Spidey, but if Parker reveals himself, Strange can't do it again. This is a fantastic Spiderman comic. I feel like a lot of the characters and story lines converged in a very satisfying way. You get some great Goblin, Venom, Agent Venom, Anti Venom, and many others. So many great moments.

  1. Renew Your Vows. This is my all time favorite Spiderman comic. It's stand alone and you don't need any context going in. If you were going to read one, this is the one I'd recommend.
