A little more on the prices, I was able to obtain the following for the mirror at these prices:

  • Raspberry pi 3 (board, case, heatsinks, power supply) - $45 (Holiday deal, can buy a kit for $50 on amazon)

  • MicroSD Card 32GB- $8 (Holiday Sale, but any MicroSD card above 8GB would work. 8-16GB is usually under $10)

  • HDMI/DVI Cable - $5 (Only need if your monitor does not have an hdmi input. HDMI cables are usually pretty cheap)

  • Monitor - $30

  • Reflective Window Film - $30 can be obtained on Amazon for no tax in some states.

  • Wood Finish - $6

  • Wood - $12 (Could be a lot less depending on what you buy).. The one found here is only $1.67/pc

I did not really have a lot of woodworking things, I had to buy clamps, wood glue, and the screws which resulted in the cost of the project being a bit higher. The plexiglass was obtained from a friend who works in a printing company. Plexiglass however is not expensive and can be obtained for a rather low cost.

In actuality, I believe this project could have costed under $110.

A few things I wished to have changed/done differently:

  • Getting the USB hub on the monitor to power on the pi 3. The one built into this monitor was not supplying enough current to power on the pi for some reason.

  • Creating the front frame a bit differently so I can remove the mirror and replace it if need be in the future.

  • Leave the stain on for less time. I would have preferred a lighter color as my secret santa's flooring was lighter than the color that came after the stain set. Also, instead of using a brush, I would have used a piece of cloth to rub on the stain.

  • Using 1" x 2" boards for the box frame. I used the 1" x 3" boards because I was afraid the 1x2 would not have been wide enough to house the back of the monitor and the pi. Turns out the notch I cut was deeper than what I originally planned, which gave a lot more room in the back than what was needed.

Edit: Added hyperlinks so people can check out what I bought/used.

Something like this Hdmi - VGA or HDMI - DVI hope this helped.

u/Johanasburg_Flowers · 3 pointsr/buildapc

You can use a converter like this or a wire like this. I personally use the dvi to hdmi cable and it has worked for me for a while now.

u/kira94 · 2 pointsr/Kerala

If the monitor doesn't have an HDMI port you can get one of these.

Cons- you'll have to connect external speakers or headphones for Audio.
Can't think of anything else.

If you're gonna buy a monitor check this out. I've been using it for about 4 months and love it.

DVI can be adapted to HDMI with cheap adapters. The money isn't worth wasting if you have new PCs coming with the proper outputs anyway. example

DVI and HDMI are the same exact video signal. Spend $5 and get an hdmi to dvi cable.

Mixing manufacturers of video cards is a bad idea in general. It might work, but buying the right cable is going to be a lot less headaches for you.

From my research it looks like you would need an active adapter (more $$$) to do hdmi to displayport. However, if your monitor has DVI, you can use something like this and it would work

u/shamgar_bn · 2 pointsr/raspberry_pi

Sure...

  • Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ (the Pi 2 probably would have been sufficient, but at the time I bought it , the 3 was actually cheaper on Amazon)

  • 22" HP LCD computer monitor ($40 on Craigslist)

  • Amazon Basics HDMI to DVI converter

  • Wireless Keyboard & Mouse (I used a basic keyboard and mouse while programming, but I bought this guy for any on-the-fly changes I need to make. I just store it on the top lip of the frame)

  • A basic surge protector

  • Raspberry Pi 5V 2.5A power supply (I had to use this one because the one pictured didn't supply enough power and it was causing some screen issues)

  • White pine lumber, some brackets, and some pocket screws for the frame build

Try this!

Free trial of prime will get you it in 2 days, just make sure you cancel your prime trial after it ships!

u/Docteh · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Just use the GTX1080 for both monitors.

Thank you, this has been extremely helpful. The one I'm using is a loaner from a friend, I did not pick this one out. This relatively recent forum thread seems to think such an adapter is not made, but DVI-D will work with my card and 24+1 DVI is dual link is it not? So this should work.

EDIT: I posted a question on the above amazon link and someone has since replied and confirmed it does work for my application.

I was silly and edited my comment because the XPS has HDMI built-in. I am looking at this.

u/CrtMan69 · 1 pointr/PS4

it does not i have my ps4 connected to dvi it should look like this https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI-DVI-Adapter-Cable/dp/B014I8UL8U?th=1

So I have an old monitor with VGA output, it is probably not worth much but I have it and would like to use it.

I thought I would need a VGA/HDMI converter from, say, plugable but apparently that is not the case?

Would this be reliable? (or something like it): https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI-DVI-Adapter-Cable/dp/B014I8UL8U/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_lp_t_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=2CKGA5T2KF3C32EM4K9Q

u/whenjohniskill · 1 pointr/buildapc

So from those pictures, it looks like you have the blue VGA and white DVI on your monitor, and the single hdmi on your laptop

First, you would need something like this connected to the laptop

Then you would need both of these connected from the splitter to the two ports on the monitor

I cannot guarantee that this will all work tho

Edit: I totally didn't just say you should hook up the same display twice. Are the first two pictures of different monitors or the same one?

u/AlarmingSmell · 1 pointr/buildapc

It looks like the cheapest graphics card with at least two HDMIs and a DVI port is the GTX 1050, which is overkill for your usage and costs $120 minimum.

The cheapest possible option would probably be to pick up a used graphics card with an HDMI port and two DVI ports and a DVI-to-HDMI adapter. The graphics card doesn't necessarily have to be a GT 730, that just seems to be the easiest graphics card available cheap with two DVI ports and an HDMI port.

> not the cable

I have this exact cable works great

u/ironfixxxer · 1 pointr/buildapc

I think you need this

You don't want to plug into your motherboard for second monitor. Both monitors should be plugged into your graphics card.

u/alch3m1stz · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

you need something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014I8UL8U

but may also need a coupler to join 2 dvi cables as well depending on your setup, but couplers can interfere with the HDMI's HDCP and will produce nothing.

most of the digital output cables are directional and only work one way and are not universal. You need a HDMI to DVI adapter or cable. it wont upscale the output to 1920x1200 it will looked stretched out vertically since it's 16:10 instead of 16:9 ratio which 1080/720p is.

would this cable work?
