The NUC is great and all, but I would seriously consider an 8 core FX box.

Awesome 6 port NIC: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hotlava-Vesuvius-6-Port-Gig-Intel-Based-NIC-PCIe-6CGigNIC-6C11810A3-/191450536777?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c93575b49

That's basically my whitebox. The Sabertooth Rev 2.0 supports IOMMU if you want to pass a PCIe device to a VM (like a video card and usb controller for a virtualized HTPC)

The six port NIC is awesome for adding routing or IP Storage to it.

I feed a SAS controller to my NAS VM and give it 3 NICS for iSCSI/NFS then I use 2 of the other NICS for my other VM traffic, and the last NIC I use for my router/firewall. The 8320 isn't as fast as the 8350 but I just wanted core count. If you're concerned about sound one of the Corsair water coolers (h55 quiet edition) is pretty damn nice.

I am really wondering why you didn't go for an 8320, but it's probably because it's your first build and you're listening to too much of the momentum of advice.

For your specific budget and your system, I think an 8320 would be a lot friendlier in the future, as software is only becoming friendlier to multi-core architecture.

That said, the difference may not be significant enough for you to consider the change. I just feel like the 8320 gets pretty sorely underappreciated in its spot. Then again, I may be biased, since I've got an 8320 in my current machine.

u/chuy409 · 3 pointsr/Amd

You mentioned Battlefront which does play around with the 8 cores of a 8000 series chip. Im pretty sure you will see substantial improvements. If you are in the states:

http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD8320FRHKBOX-FX-8320-8-Core-Processor/dp/B009O7YU56/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1448936568&sr=8-1&keywords=8320

a 8320 for 100. Pretty much a steal.

u/jfalc0n · 3 pointsr/Vive

That's very interesting, I have the GTX 970 and I don't seem to have any problem with the games. I wonder if the CPU one has also has some weight in the equation. I'm currently using an AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz and really getting a lot of bang for the buck.

The video card I have is the EVGA GTX 970 FTW.

I haven't had any issues with juddering, dropped frames or performance in general and I think I probably have the the lowest end of a system based on requirements. I'm also not overclocking any of my components. Make sure you also turn off unnecessary services, use the performance monitor to see what's taking up most of your processor time. Antivirus software is probably the worst offender or the Windows Indexing service.

u/spdbump08 · 3 pointsr/buildapc

I'd do something like upgrade the processor to an FX-8320 and the video card to a 260X. This would put the total cost of upgrading at $240. Here's a comparison of the 4300 and the 8320, and here's what the 6850 looks like against the 260X.

However, if this build is mostly for gaming you'd probably be better off putting your whole budget towards a video card. The 4300 and the 8320 perform almost identically in games. You could get a 270, 270X, 7870, or even a GTX 760. Any one of those cards would be a huge improvement over the 6850 and you can find them as low as ~$180 for the 270 to ~$230-$250 for the 760.

u/thelazymansatheist · 3 pointsr/buildapc

Not bad but I have two suggestions.

  1. Go with an FX-8320 instead for $10 more as it's nearly twice as fast as the A10-6800K and has 4 additional cores for editing.

  2. Go with an R9 270 instead of two 7770's. It's slightly faster and won't have issues with games that aren't well optimized for crossfire. If you need more power down the road, then you can add an additional card.

One last note (and this is entirely personal preference) but check out swan speakers. I have these and they are the most impressive $130 desktop speakers (or any speakers) I've ever owned. Paired them with a Xonar ST and they blow me away everyday. They also have higher quality sets at ~$170, $250, and higher that sound even better.

And I think this cooler (but maybe a similar one):

I bought this in 2015 but it should be able to play WoW (i think?). You would need to find a power supply, hard drive and memory. This is sitting in my closet for the past 2 years so it may not be working...

The AMD FX-8320 is a better replacement, but a touch more expensive at £ 109.90.

u/kedipopo · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I feel like you are putting money into things that aren't really needed. For a gaming computer, the main component is the gpu. And when you have a 1000 bucks to spend on a build, you would usually allocate maybe $200 for the gpu. I would aim for a 7870 when it goes on sale to around 200 bucks. What I'm confused with is that you choose to have a top of the line case, and a mediocre gpu/cpu. I would not spend anything more than 60 dollars on a case, getting either the 200r or the Arc Midi R2. You can then spend more money on things that actually change performance like a Fx-8320 or a 7870 that goes on sale. I also don't think that you really need a cpu cooler because AMD usually provides a sufficient cooler for people who aren't planning to overclock their cpu's. Question yourself and see if you really do need an optical drive. I just borrowed one from my friend to install my OS, and then returned it. I haven't needed one in over a year and a half.

u/callmecavs · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Seems like you're missing some RAM - your computer wont work without it. Get the cheapest 2x4gb (8gb total) that you can find. 1600 mt/s is good enough for gaming, and anything over 8gb is overkill for games. I'd recommend Crucial Ballistix 2x4gb kit - Amazon link. It'll run you about $60.

I'd recommend a better video card - 1gb isn't quite enough for some of the higher end games out there these days. Check out this msi radeon 7870 on newegg - you'll get 2 free games (you can pick which 2) with it as well because of AMD's new never settle promotion (see game titles here). This card is only about $50 more than your current one, and it'll give you twice as much video ram (2gb).

Those 2 changes will put you in the $750 range. If you wanna spend closer to $800, I'd recommend a processor upgrade. Check out the AMD 8320 - Amazon link. For another $25 bucks you'll get an 8 core processor, instead of 6 (same mobo will work as well). It's a smaller priced upgrade than an SSD. You'll notice the performance increase when doing heavy multitasking, which at college is likely to happen (office docs open, gaming, browsers open, etc)

u/TaylorHammond9 · 2 pointsr/hardwareswap

So I just bought the i7-4790k from the Intel Retail Edge. How much should I expect to get out of:

AMD 8320

ASUS M5A97 R2.0

Hopefully enough to get me a nice new 1150 mobo

u/skyline385 · 2 pointsr/Gunners

Well i got a temporary built for you. Be warned it is slightly above 400 quids but you are into entry range high end PCs here (especially the processor) and will satisfy all your gaming needs while easily "stomping" both of the next-gen consoles.

Processor - AMD FX8320 Black Edition 8 Core

GPU - AMD HD7770 2GB

Mobo - Asus M5A97

PSU - Corsair CX750

RAM - Corsair 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Vengeance Memory Kit

HDD - Get a local one for cheap (barely matters unless you want a SSD)

Blu-ray - That shit isn't cheap and i didn't plan on including it in my stupid estimate which i made. I don't even use a DVD writer for myself and i haven't ever felt the need for one.

Audio - Since you said you wanted excellent Audio quality, you should look up on the Asus XONAR cards and pick one according to your needs. If you just want good audio quality for some personal music and movies, you can pick up the basic Xonar cards. They all have excellent audio.

Cabinet - Can't say what you need there. Pick anything with a decent airflow and you are good to go. Else, you can do what i do and pick a cheap one while just keeping it open for the airflow. Unless you are for aesthetics, you can save a good amount of fortune here.

> We cant tell you how well a certain computer does on a certain game, honestly.

Ah, alright. And my budget would probably be $750 tops. Not including monitor, keyboard, windows, etc. Just the tower and everything inside.

Here's what I've been looking into so far:

u/ElfenL · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I'm not too sure if I am right here so I expect some users to correct me.
The CPU is a few generations old and quite pricey considering you could get an 8320 for less: http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-FX8320-Edition-4-0GHz-Socket/dp/B009O7YU56/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1394569130&sr=8-3&keywords=amd+fx

Also that motherboard looks pricey too. dragoth's suggestion looks better and is compatible with this CPU

The Hard Drive is very cheap but 500GB isn't too much these days and 5900RPM isn't very fast either.

Thanks for the heads up on the cover. I took it off myself because it wasn't low profile. I'll set this project aside and just buy a new card with the appropriate cover.

So I managed to get this one to show up, but I have trouble getting it to recognize anything I plug in.

From my research, I found that switching to legacy helped alot of people.

Upon trying to install legacy drivers, I get a serious freeze followed by bsod every time.

The product I intend to use recommends TI chipset, so my plan was to buy one that had TI, which would concern me if this one had it and doesn't work.

What are my options here? Would win 10 fix this? How about a newer pci card like this one?

I did as much as I could to get the price down without changing the core parts you had picked.

Added 8GB memory, and found a case that looks a lot like what you had before. I also changed the graphics card and power supply to lower the total price down.

Would this cpu be better than the i5? It looks like it scored higher on benchmarks. I'm really new to all of this.

u/aaam13 · 1 pointr/24hoursupport

This one. Sorry should've mentioned.

u/tEdits · 1 pointr/buildapc

Hey it's Toby from tEdits, the site you're using! :P

Anyway that build is a few months old now, I've been meaning to update it and I will do soon, but it adds up to £497 right now.

You can save about £10 on the motherboard by getting the MSI 970-G43, it's pretty much the same as the ASUS M5A97 R2.0, just cheaper with a few more USB 2.0 ports.

Also if you've got about £20 extra to spend you should go for the FX-8320, it's an 8-core CPU which will give you better performance in CPU intensive games, such as Metro Last Light or Far Cry 3, and in multi-threaded applications like Photoshop or Premier.

I hope this helps! :)

u/breeks · 1 pointr/buildapc

First of all: thank you very much for your help.

Yes, this build is just for gaming. The FX-6350 does sound very alluring being that much cheaper. Do you know how much of a performance hit I should expect in games?

I would like to play modern games (Bioshock Infinite, BF4 etc.) at the highest graphics settings at 1920x1080. Would I still get a decent enough frame rate with a FX-6350?

How about a FX-8320 which has recently been reduced from £142.44 to £105.86?

u/DeadFetusConsumer · 1 pointr/buildapc

You would be right, yes. Why do you ask?

Here it is

u/fullfire55 · 1 pointr/Nioh

It's an AMD one less powerful than an i5 and on Win 7 (this processor: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009O7YU56/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) . As I said a see a lot of people with the issue. I've refunded the game now but I hope one day I can go back to it! I feel as though it was something to do with some aspect of my graphics cards software but not sure what. The processor is certainly showing its age now. :)

u/USonic · 1 pointr/buildapc

If you are willing to go AMD, you have the 8320. If you're not, consider the i5-3470, as if anything happens to your video card, you won't necessarily have to replace it to use the computer again.

u/D-Marn · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

Hey again!

Not sure if you'll see this but thought I'd ask you another question if you don't mind.

I've just seen this AMD processor go on sale on amazon ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-FX8320-Edition-4-0GHz-Socket/dp/B009O7YU56/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t ) and as it happens I forgot that I do actually have my old PC with the tower and everything and was wondering if you had an idea of how well this processor compares in terms of gaming to the others you linked me and also maybe if you know of a graphics card that would go along nicely with it (I don't know whether you need different graphics cards for different processors)

Again the with the graphics card I would be looking for top performance (something which could run battlefield 3 at ultra 60fps)

Thanks again!

u/jakestrictor · 1 pointr/buildapc

Assuming I got the mid tower case would it matter if I got a motherboard that was mini? or does it matter any about a motherboards size? 0.0

I looked up on amazing and found this was that the processor type you were referring too?

u/1ns4n3p41n · 1 pointr/buildapc

Here's the normal version of the CPU (which is a bit cheaper)

There really aren't many z77 motherboards in the 60 GBP price range, or they're not very decent... Just search for "z77" on amazon, can't really help you with choosing one :/

Although I would say go with a 8320 instead, it will save you some money and I think it is better at editing tasks & pick up a cheap aftermarket CPU cooler solution to OC the 8320 (something like this)

Here's a mobo for it in the same price range (10 gbp difference)

u/WishIHadAComputer · 1 pointr/buildapc

If you're just gaming, the second option might be better. However, I would switch out the 8350 for a 6300 (or an 8320 that's on sale right now for $145 here) and get a higher quality motherboard. Something like an ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, or MSI 990FX motherboard.

u/Waex · 1 pointr/buildapc
would it be wise to take advantage of This deal on a 8320? obviously i'd need to change my motherboard. I know amd gets a lot of flak but for $99 it seems pretty good considering there arent many i5 processors on sale. I'd be changing the case to a thermaltake core v21

Edit: So like This (but it seems too cheap)

If tech freaks reply to this and say it's trash or there is better stuff out there, for cheaper, for CSGO, then they are probably right. But it works for me, I'm constantly above 200.

I guess i2500 at Ebay is only ... around 80$, so if people tell you it's good, it probably is.

Thanks. This one is on sale, but my PSU was ~12 bucks, so I should tend to that first.

u/GamerMan3D · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Yes exactly. But the gains wouldn't be that big though. So If you want you could save up to upgrade to an i5. Amd won't be releasing a high end processor for a while so I would switch to intel. But if you don't want to do that and want to spend some cash on cpu then go ahead and buy a 8350 or 8320. No need to get the 8370 since its just a higher clocked 8350. Same with the 8320 it is just a lower clocked 8350. If you find a good deal for the 8320 then buy that. http://www.amazon.com/Amd-Fx-8320-125-16mb-3500/dp/B009O7YU56 Its 100 dollars off for now on amazon. All of the reviews I mentioned before are all not overclocked which definitely makes a big difference in terms of performance. But make sure you don't have a cheap motherboard when overclocking. I currently have my 8320 at 4.6 ghz. Will overclock more after I get my motherboard soon. Just saying for reference.

I don't want to hijack your thread, but if someone can offer some input on my situation as well, that would be awesome. Was just thinking of making a similar thread but I hate spamming D: Hope you don't mind if I post in here to get some possible advice?

My CPU cannot handle me running multiple instances of OBS. I need one instance for game footage/sound only, another instance of OBS or just my webcam software to record my face, then another instance of OBS to slap the game footage and webcam together. I want to do it all separately so when I edit for YouTube it looks 1000% better than if I just use the recording from Twitch with everything smooshed together.

Any thoughts on what CPU would be good that I can get for around $150, $200 at most. I was suggested this CPU by a buddy and this motherboard. Anyone think they will be good enough?

OBS went crazy when I had two instances open, one of my webcam, the other of game footage. I was just PREVIEWING it and it was like WOAH THERE STAHP and lagged like crazy. Couldn't even imagine how it would have reacted had I actually hit the record button D:

It's a newer design (offers higher IPC), faster, and more cores. I'd suggest getting a FX-8320 for $104 and just overclocking it to 8350 speeds.

FFS Just lost out on the $100 deal for this one:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009O7YU56/?tag=pcpapi-20

Now it's 15 dollars more expensive!!!

It's not much, but it's a bit facepalmey...

u/tyler_robotnik · 1 pointr/computers

$700 is a bit tight for some of the newer games, this is the best i could come up with that fits reasonably close to that.

AMD FX-8350

Corsair H75

Gigabyte AM3+ 990FX

corsair vengence pro 2x4

MSI radeon rx470

corsair r500

EVGA 500w

i would recommend you wait a month or so in case the price of AM3+ stuff drops due to the ryzen being released, if that happens you might be able to afford an rx480

I want to upgrade my gaming PC. I'm looking at the AMD FX-8320 and a Gigabyte 970 Motherboard to upgrade my computer a bit (I'll then later get Memory and a video card). Any suggestions? Would it be better for me to snag an i5 during black Friday and grab a mobo later? I have about $220 to spend. Suggestions?

Links - FX-8320 and Gigabyte 970 mobo

edit: I've been looking at the Fx-6300 as well. Is it worth the extra $30-$40 for the FX-8320?

But seriously I don't think that board can handle the tdp of the 9370.

Edit: it can but idk if i would do it i have the evo edition of this board and my North bridge gets pretty hot with my OC 8350

If it was me i would get the 8320 on sale on amazon right now and push it to 4.4ghz

I've got a first generation Asus sabertooth 990FX board: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_990FX/ . They look really cool, lots of good features, bulletproof design. Up to 32GB of 1866 MHz RAM. Here's a comparable CPU to mine: https://www.amazon.ca/Amd-Fx-8320-125-16mb-3500/dp/B009O7YU56/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

Wow nice one man, do you reckon using this processor instead would make much difference? (Building something similar! :D)

Something like a silent, windowed, white case at this budget with everything you need included is going to take too much of a bite to be worth it. I've included a white NZXT Source 210 Elite though. Hopefully it's close enough to what you're looking for.

This is very much video editing optimized. The 8-core FX-8320 just loves chewing through media tasks, and the Radeon HD7750 is extremely light on power, but gives you the advantage of the GCN architecture's powerful OpenCL acceleration. Will obliterate Minecraft as well.

The only thing missing there is speakers. Realistically if you're doing monitoring work for your videos, you'll be better off getting a set of decent headphones. The Superlux HD661 would be perfect for that, and will only run you $40.

The Microcenter combo deal on the CPU/Motherboard is included. Also, since Amazon is offering the 8320 for $145 it can't hurt to ask if they'll price match, even if it's only $5.
u/Hashtaeg · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

Ah I see, thanks. I wanted to go with an Intel cpu for the lower power consumption and the better performance/hyperthreading.
I noticed you didn't use the [8320 and I found that for 151 on Amazon] (http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD8320FRHKBOX-FX-8320-FX-Series-Edition/dp/B009O7YU56) , if this is an error on your part I understand.

Initially I was picking out parts and so far I had a Core i3-4130, EVGA GTX 750 Ti 2gb and the same Define R4 case. I wanted to build upon from that but I came here to see what you guys would suggest.

Sorry if I sound really rubbish, this is my first attempt at building a PC and I know almost nothing about motherboards psus and coolers.

u/mckeitherson · 1 pointr/buildapc

For that budget (and if you're set on AMD), Amazon is selling the FX 8320 for $152, although you have to do some research on your motherboard to see if it supports the FX 8xxx series properly. I know some throttle or have overheating issues due to the power requirements.

u/gnugames · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

If you don't mind rebates then this is also a good option. R9 270 is an overclocked 7870.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131563

This CPU would also be better.

Should have looked at buildapcsales before making this lol. One of the reasons why PCPartPicker isn't always the best.

With a BIOS 1605 update, the M5A97 supports the new AMD processors like the FX-8320.

Also, I'm using amazon to purchase all these items mostly because It's easier for me to use and I have free shipping with Prime. I'm open to any suggestions on what to get or what not to get.

Thanks, man. I hadn't even considered getting a 1070, but it makes sense. It seems to be a lower price than the 980ti currently. I had hoped to find something as powerful as a 908ti for about £350, but it doesn't seem to be possible.

u/Johnpod_Eire · 1 pointr/buildapc

here
I was wondering spending £20 extra would get me that, would it be good? or stick with intel?
