Build details:

Streacom FC8 Alpha case - $190

Ryzen 5 2400G - $169

Gigabyte GA-AB350N-Wifi - $125

G.Skill 2x4GB 3200 DDR4 - $115

Mini-Box picoPSU-120-WI-25 - $60

19V 120W AC Adapter - $18

CPU power connector - $5

ATX extension - $6

So the case is WAY expensive, but options with internal passive cooling hardware aren't exactly frequent, and the build quality is great. The Motherboard did pose a little trouble, since it came with an ancient bios... But I kinda knew that might happen. I have another PC with an 1800x, so I just borrowed it for a bit to do the bios update.

With the build complete, stress testing using intelburntest on extreme does get it a little hotter than I like - quickly rises into the 60's and by the time it really plateaus it's in the low 80s. Admittedly, that's sustained stress, so probably not a concern, but I felt a little better after underclocking to 3.4 and pulling the voltage back to 1.18 max using the pstate OC options. After that, it now never breaks mid-60s under stress, and cinebench score dropped from 880 to 818 - acceptable for the particular use case. I also tested heat buildup in the 3dmark paraglider stress test, and video underclocking wasn't necessary. Underclocking will also likely help with the power limitations --- Although in both stress tests, power was a non-issue, the PSU is just 120w. One side note about psu selection: There are a lot of picoPSUs out there, but almost all of them NEED 12v from the brick, and just directly pass that 12v input to the 12 rail. That's a good solution, but 19v high-current bricks are a LOT less expensive than the 12v equivalents. Especially when you consider the possibility of replacing a brick, I think it's a better solution to get the slightly more expensive picoPSU that accepts higher input voltages (12-24 all OK). Plus, that means the 12v rail is likely better regulated than raw output from a brick.

The PC is my wife's - She just changed jobs, and her computer resides in our bedroom. She uses it for some Android development, accessing her work vm, general purpose pc (browsing, bills, you know), skype, and some light gaming. The old one was a basic build with inexpensive PSU, so when it was on it was crazy loud. Now?

Utter. Dead. Silence :) Also a LOT less space occupied. Total cost was just under $700. Case was of course a huge part of that expense.

Edit to add: forgot to mention, had a MyDigitalSSD 240g m.2 drive in hand already, so that's the drive in use here.

The pro is slower than the 2400G "Pro" and the 2400G isn't anywhere near 230$ they are 140$ shipped brand new on Amazon.

CPU/GPU Combo, AMD APU Ryzen 2400g - $160.

16GB RAM, TridentZ RGB. - $165. It's important not to skimp on cheap RAM, the APU needs fast dual channel ram to be able to process the graphics as it shares memory lanes with the system memory, as all APUs do. You could go with 8GB and be fine though, just buy a 2x4GB kit for dual channel support and you'll save $80. Try to clock the RAM to at least 3200MHZ in the BIOS to get the most out of the APU or buy ram that comes at that speed.

240GB SSD. -$40. I prefer a smaller capacity but fast and cheap SSD over a larger hard drive, keep in mind the case only holds one 2.5" drive and one extra if you buy a hard drive caddy for the optical drive slot in the case.

Motherboard, has WIFI and Bluetooth built in. - $110. Solid board, decent VRM, great reviews. If you build in my small case, you gotta get an ITX size motherboard, nothing else will fit.

10.1" Monitor. - $110. See this comment for my thoughts on this one. It's the best price to performance portable USB powered monitor I could find. Don't buy the 7" one, it has half the resolution.

The In-Win ITX PC case. - $70. Comes with a 150w power supply, but does not have a GPU slot, hence the AMD APU. Very small, 3 x 8.9 x 7.6 inches.

u/videogameenthusiast · 7 pointsr/Amd

I'm more on the "70 bucks is not worth it, the 2200g is just too good " side of the fence, and i'm glad that the prices here in germany are reflecting that. I think 50% more for SMT is totally justified.

2200g 96€

2400g 149€

Those chips are amazing.

https://www.banifox.com/thermaltake-fuente-430w-ps-spd0430npcwus-w/art_89269/

https://www.banifox.com/amd-procesador-a10-9700/art_11431/

    https://www.banifox.com/gabinetes-gaming-g7/art_89264/

depending on what kind of games you play, you could look at the newest Ryzen 5 APUs -- the 2400

https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Radeon-Graphics/dp/B079D8FD28/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520014463&sr=8-1&keywords=ryzen+5+2400g&dpID=31004JtpdTL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

170$ will get you a CPU and GPU that can run Rainbowsix Siege at 60FPS. Can't sneeze at that

can always upgrade to a dedicated GPU later when the prices come back down. I have a Ryzen 5 (prior to the APUs) and I've been loving the performance for the price.....

edit: some more info on the APUs http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2018-ryzen-3-2200-g-ryzen-5-2400g-review

You could kill 2 birds with one stone and get a Ryzen iGPU which would be both a substantial upgrade in graphical and CPU performance.

4 Cores is all you would need for a storage-server build. This CPU also comes with Vega 11 integrated graphics so any lighter GPU tasks such as eSports gaming and light rendering should be usable or playable on the iGPU. Also, this CPU comes with a decent stock cooler.

RAM: https://www.newegg.com/team-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820331360?Description=16gb%20ddr4%203000%2016gb%20t%20force&cm_re=16gb_ddr4_3000_16gb_t_force-_-20-331-360-_-Product

Nothing really to explain here, this is just a good budget RAM option from a decent brand.

MOBO: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Performance-Motherboard-B450I-AC/dp/B07F83RY49/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=motherboard+b450+itx&qid=1568156444&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Went with a B450 itx from reputable brand, nothing too fancy with this.

These parts should come in around $300.

I don't know if you need any hard drives, but here's one I would recommend running: https://www.newegg.com/p/1Z4-0002-00B89?Description=nas%20drive%208tb&cm_re=nas_drive_8tb-_-1Z4-0002-00B89-_-Product

u/SirDinkus · 2 pointsr/ShadowPC

>DDR4 still costs a lot

16gb of performance RAM can be had for as little as $100

>you need to buy an SSD, HDD, the PSU, all the other items

A 500gb SSD (almost twice the storage of shadow) can be had for $50 and a PSU can literally be as cheap as you're willing to risk paying

Add in a $130 dollar Ryzen Processor, a cheap PC case and Motherboard and you've got an entirely better System (sans the GPU) for a grand total of $450. With the massive price drops of GPUs coming this month, you can add one of your choice and have it all for $800- $900, and that's all brand new hardware. If you were to buy used, you could build for hundreds less.
So no, you're wrong. It's not anywhere near $2000. Not even by half.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/techsupport

Yes, as long as a motherboard for that AMD CPU doesn't cost much more than the one you've chosen for the Intel chip. I'd also suggest spending $20 more and getting the 3400G instead of the 3200G to get the symmetric multithreading. I've tested the 3400G and its performance is quite good.

u/kggrm · 2 pointsr/buildmeapc
If you are intent to build and want to stay under $500, then the best option is below. The Ryzen 5 2400G is AMD's new CPU with integrated Vega graphics slated for release on 12 February. Look at the reviews at that time and see if this is right for you. The video below gives you some idea of what to expect, but again wait for the official reviews before making your final decision.

Here's a Ryzen 2400G build I put together real quick. Don't know if you need a case or like the one I picked, so go for whatever there.

PCPartPicker doesn't have the 2400G listed yet so I used the $169.99 pricepoint from Amazon.

Also went out of my way to find a B350 motherboard with 4x DIMM slots so that you can expand to 16GB eventually (4GBx4).

The CPU and board are not compatible. The board is AM1 socket while the CPU is FM1 socket.

I would look at something like this if you want integrated graphics - https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Radeon-Graphics/dp/B079D8FD28/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1525742910&sr=8-5&keywords=amd+ryzen+5.

You will then want to find an AM4 board. I would suggest something like this - https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Gaming-Ryzen-Motherboard-TOMAHAWK/dp/B06WVFFXXL/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1525743002&sr=8-2&keywords=b350+am4+board.

It won't break the bank and the parts are newer than what you have listed in your wishlist.

Not that cheap, but the AMD Ryzen 5 2400G processor had Radeon X Vega 11 graphics. It could run some games pretty decently, price is $168.75 currently on amazon.

You're getting a 7 1700, that thing is more that just a "cheap amd" CPU.

Might be able to get one of these: https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Radeon-Graphics/dp/B079D8FD28 and overclock the hell out of it, would save a ton of money.

u/kokoren · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

If you're charging extra for the shipping+paypal fees, then isn't that going to end up more than those parts (2400g combo) are new? At least currently.

u/harmsypoo · 1 pointr/sffpc

My build is pretty janky right now. I'm waiting for a new, smaller case to come in and all of my ITX parts are sitting in a big ol' case. Cables are everywhere. You wouldn't want to look at it. :p

Also, you'd be surprised by the amount of frames you can push on the cheap these days. If I were you, I'd look into the AMD 2400G. It's your CPU and graphics card in one chip. It's ~$160, and it's not all that powerful, but it can run WoW at around 100 fps with dips below 60 in congested areas and even play Assassin's Creed Origins at 1080p very stably above 30 fps. Now, this is with lots of settings turned down or off but it's a pretty sweet bargain. Of course, the rest of your parts will be a few hundred dollars more in total, but you could get lots of mileage out of this chip for what you want to be doing.

Sorry, Im new to building, I dont quite understand what you mean by,
>and further investing into the platform is not something I would recommend.

Im just a little confused is all

I dont know if the EVGA 750 GQ is a good PSU, but I feel like its the only solid part in my rig right now lol. If I need better, let me know.

What would be a good GPU to grab on a tight budget? Its something I knew I was going to need to upgrade when I put this rig together, as these are hand-me-downs from a friend. Just some thing to get me by.

And say I was to impulse buy [this] (https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Radeon-Graphics/dp/B079D8FD28), Would I need to upgrade to a new MB, or would the one I have be just fine? I know I might need to flash my current MB's BIOS in order to install it?

u/rvxctions · 1 pointr/buildapc

Your updated list should be fine.

If you can, I would suggest getting a Ryzen 5 2400G, it has better integrated graphics (Vega 11) and has 4 more threads. It currently costs £119.99 on Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Radeon-Graphics/dp/B079D8FD28).

Going a little extra on the PSU wattage would also be recommended. Most builders often choose a 500W or a 550W power supply for better expandability/upgradability.

Other than that, the build is great.

u/omninewb · 1 pointr/unRAID

This is a great start! I am curious about a couple of things.

  1. Case - Are there particular cases that I may want to look at, hardware raid, software raid, none?

  2. I know that hardware rendering passthrough is a thing that people are doing for PleX in particular. Is this possible through through an integrated card, say the Ryzen 2400g, or a dedicated card?
u/BluSkyChameleon · 1 pointr/gaming

Awesome! Ok so I have decided that if I want a pc that’s better than the prebuilt one that I already have, I’m going to have to spend more. Therefore I have raised my budget to the $350 to $400 range. I have also assembled a list of parts that I would like to run by you because you seem like you know what you are doing.

What's the price range? We can do one for the current-gen x, the slim, or the original.

Edit: The build came out at around $351. Do keep in mind I found all of these parts on Amazon, so pricing may be lower or higher depending on the storefront, and/or the country you live in. I excluded the case because you can get any micro-ATX pc case for the hardware, so you can spend as high or as low as you please.

Here are the beautiful specs:

Note: The processor has pretty decent graphical capabilities.

Also, if you take into account the hundreds of advantages a pc has over a console, this build is totally worth it.

This build is very upgrade friendly, so if you wanted to take this build even further, adding an RX 570 graphics card (this is an optional add-on/upgrade) to the build would bring a ps4 pro or a one x to its knees and ask to give oral. The price is about $160 on Amazon. Further on, consoles cannot truly render native 4K, but this graphics card can handle true 4k.

If you're going the super budget route, check out AMD's Ryzen 5 2400G with Radeon integrated graphics. I have a friend buying that and saving to get a 1060 when prices go back down. https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Radeon-Graphics/dp/B079D8FD28/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519145388&sr=8-1&keywords=2400G

Graphics compare to a 1050 from what I've seen. Linus has a video on these guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOCIgOZ8-dc&t=78s
