Still depends on your specific workload.The 3600 is a solid choice but overall I would recommend the R7s especially the 2700 for only $186. And if your budget allows get the 3700x it's definitely worth it . Again check the benchmarks for your specific workload.

I have nothing against Intel, great performers especially in games. But you could have bought ryzens capable of gaming and streaming simultaneously at retail for 40-80$ cheaper per cpu.... retail price. I get people wanting Intel for the few extra frames in a home setting. But as a business - you’re wasting money spending that much on 4/6 core cpus with only marginally better gaming performance and significantly less overall horsepower. You could seriously have bought all the ryzen cpus you need at retail and saved yourself probably upwards of 10 grand or more. Which would have significantly decreased your time running at a loss. No joke - I would send the lot back and order amd. It’s really just flat out a poor business decision not to and you should absolutely quit listening to whoever suggested these intels were a good idea for a business. Good luck tho - I hope it goes well.

(And just to clarify again - I’m not bashing Intel here. It’s just simply a bad business decision to spend this much more on something meant to make money. As a business he should be getting the best parts he can for the price. Which is hands down amd - no contest)

i7 all day, every day; here is why:

• The performance improvement is only ~7-10% (assuming no throttling)
  
• for $350 you can buy a desktop 8 core/16 threads Ryzen 2700 CPU and blow away 90% of everything short of a $1000 CPU
  
• increased heat output will reduce the lifetime of the chip (heat kills electrics, basically the reaper)
  
• same core/thread count as i7
  
• oh, and the overclocking is a gimmick on a laptop, especially for the XPS cooling system which is only adequate
  
  With all these things in mind (I do a little rendering and editing as well) and I went with a i7 (and saved the $350). I plan to use my desktop for all the big jobs, and the laptop is just a supplement for working while traveling or mobile.
  
  However only a few things would change the scenario. IF the i9 added two cores it would be a different story, unfortunately not the case. If you really need an laptop (for some reason you cant get/have a desktop or render farm) the XPS is probably not the answer, your looking at a Precision 7530 (when it comes out). The XPS is just not designed with long term heavy lifting in mind; can it do it, YES and well, but you have to be willing to accept the limitations (that is were the precision line comes in).

I think a lot of your prices are high.

For example the mobo can be found on amazon for $60 less than your asking and the Ryzen 7 2700 is only 170 new on amazon compared to your $190.

As the saying goes. There's no such thing as a bad product, only a bad price.

For that price, and if I needed all of those threads, I'd get a 2700 instead. Performance will be very similar, except you get the higher IPC, lower latencies, lower power, and included descent cooler with the 2700. With the ability to push it beyond the 1800X's performance, through an OC.

Ryzen 7 2700 brand new for $180 or $185 on Amazon

Ok, so this PC build is a little over the $700, coming in about $800-ish after taxes. I did go with a Ryzen 7 due to the benefits of extra cores for graphic design and other workstation tasks that you may be doing in the future. This PC should run the vast majority of 1080p games at Maximum settings and can even handle moderate 1440p gaming. Every component is found on Amazon.

I also went with a more compact, grey design that really makes your build blend in with the desktop environment while still looking beautiful from the outside. The mATX form factor also means that your PC could fit into tight spaces.

The one I was looking at with Prime is actually almost cut in half in cost, it's like $30 cheaper. The link is below. Still think the 5 would be the better choice? Also, would the HyperX Predator DDR4 RGB 16GB kit 3200MHz CL16 DIMM XMP RAM work well do you think, or should I just save up and get the 32GB or 64GB? • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Windforce 8G Graphics Card Because the 2080 from Toms seems overpowered for what I want/need. As u/Overload_inc suggested it might be worth me stepping down to the 2060 and using the extra cash to buy a correctly matched monitor? My current one is 10 years old and I'm guessing therefore not cool.
  
• MyDigitalSSD BPX Pro 512gig SSD The price difference makes it seem like a no brainer to go M.2 on the SSD. Could be convinced to go 1TB though this model got on Tom's best list for good longevity.
  
• Patriot Viper 4 Series Extreme Performance DDR4 16GB (2 X 8GB) 3200MHz Kit Purely because it has no lights on it. I did not dive into caring about timing stats or anything like that. Would be happy to fiddle with this more.
  
• Seasonic FOCUS Plus 650 Gold SSR-650FX 650W Didn't google. Straight from Toms. Given that I downgraded the video card it may be that 650 is too much?
  
• NZXT H500 – Compact ATX Mid-Tower Case because it looks fine and can get it prime from amazon.

I know it's been a month but just wanted to give my input. I have same processor running at 4.5GHz, GTX 770, and 8GB DDR3, so fairly comparable since it isn't GPU bound. I get like 10-15 in crowded areas (which sucks because pretty much everything that isn't a dungeon is a crowded area). Lots of audio stuttering and hitches in fps. I recommend upgrading that cpu and ram to current gen processor and DDR4. I mean now you can get 4x the threads for $265. I know upgrading cpu sucks because you need a new mb and RAM, but really to take advantage of that 970 I think its your best option, you probably really cpu bottlenecked in new games for frame rate.

I'm assuming your CPU budget is around $200 then, since you were also considering an 8th gen i5. In that case I'd definitely go with the Ryzen 7 2700, it has similar performance in gaming to the 2600 but is much better when it comes to rendering, and it's currently under $200 on Amazon.

That's a fine decision, but if you want to save a bit more money, it's probably cheaper to go AMD and get equal/better performance. Most software development tools are multithreaded and will benefit from more cores and threads. AMD CPUs are very similar to Intel CPUs, and the only difference is slightly slower single core clocks and much much slower AVX512. If you know you need AVX512, stay with Intel.

For example:

• Ryzen 7 2700 is a 8 core/16 thread CPU with 3.2 GHz base and 4.1 GHz boost for $297
  
  
• Ryzen 5 2600 is a 6 core/12 thread CPU with 3.4 GHz base and 3.9 GHz boost for $213
  
  These will offer better performance in any program that takes advantage of all 6 cores/12 threads compared to the 9600k, and is much cheaper. Intel really shines with Gaming builds that want high single core clocks, but from what I see, you're not doing any gaming. Definitely worth taking a look at if you want to save some money.

I know MicroCenter has the deal but I can buy the mobo and cpu with this fan separately on amazon for a few dollars cheaper and save a trip to micro center in the process. I looked up the two fans and it seemed like the Spire was even better than the Prism, I just might lose out on the LEDs
