I’m an atheist lurker too, welcome! If you haven’t watched the Yale intro videos yet, I strongly recommend starting there. They give all the context you need to dig deeper in whatever grabs your attention.
A book I’ve recently read that I thought was incredibly helpful was Introduction to the Old Testament: Sacred Texts and Imperial Contexts. Instead of the Genesis to Revelation format, it went through texts chronologically, going into depth with the political/cultural context. The book really helped with being able to situate each text in the timeline.
