Anansi boys is an excellent bit of light relief after American Gods, (I'd love more standalone novels about the characters in American Gods).


I've just enjoyed The Golem and the Djinni, it filled a Gaiman shaped hole for a little while and led me onto Fay Weldon's Kehua (which may not be quite what you're looking for but is well worth a read if you like your ancient ghosts and myths in contemporary settings).
